One could say after a lifetime in the fashion industry, Roy Rizwan also knows a thing or two about presentation. The owner of XAR Clothier, he not only has eyes for fashion — they also double as a tape measure.

Now celebrating a decade in Southlake Town Square, he could very well be the reason why date night in Southlake keeps looking better. Or is it the restaurants?

Southlake has been bustling with new restaurant openings like Mesero, Stella Ristorante and Ferah Tex-Med just to name a few. Even longstanding favorites like Mi Cocina and more recently Copeland’s have gone through substantial remodels all in the name of fine dining.

See what we mean in our feature “The Fine Art of Sushi.”

This month’s issue is proof that presentation skills also matter in the dining room, where plenty of Southlake-area restaurants show off their greatest offerings in the pages of our annual dining guide.

YoursMike@SouthlakeStyle.cominSouthlakeStyle, Know your audience. Make a good first impression. Be authentic. These are great tips for the boardroom, where getting your point across effectively can make all the difference.

All this to say, it’s not easy to stand out in this crowd — especially if you’re a sushi restaurant, of which we now have 10. However, my jaw dropped upon seeing all that Nikko has to offer. Southlake’s newest sushi spot has poured over every detail, from the designer lighting to immaculate plating. When it comes to its sushi grade, Nikko gets an A+.

FIND YOUR NEW FAVORITE DRINK AT ONE OF THESE LOCAL HAUNTS

BY LIZZY SPANGLER

There’s nothing better than sipping on a craft beverage and soaking up the good vibes. Whether you visit as part of a happy hour with friends or a date night with your partner, these Southlake restaurants have curated drink menus and are just a few Uber dollars from home. So get ready to sample what some of the city’s favorite locales have to offer, from homegrown beers to immaculate-looking (and tasting!) cocktails. Who knows — you might just find your new favorite drink.

With a small brewery located in the back of its Southlake location, Malai Kitchen makes authentic Asian-inspired beers using only the freshest ingredients. Each brew takes 2-3 weeks to go from grain to glass, with flavors specifi cally designed to pair with Malai Kitchen’s dishes.

MONDAY-THURSDAY, 11 P.M.

“The focus on a culinary forward approach to our beer recipe-making really makes us unique,” head brewer Justin Meyers says.

“Many of our beer recipes take advantage of the fresh ingredients available in our Thai-Vietnamese kitchen that allow us to make unique brews that are designed to com plement the complex flavors of the food,” Justin says.

The restaurant always has five beer staples on its menu along with a rotating seasonal drink. Some of the recent seasonal offerings include the mango guava kolsch and the farmhouse braggot with Texas honey and bee pollen.

The establishment’s most popular beer is the Thai PA, Malai’s house IPA brewed with lemongrass, ginger, turmer ic, coriander and five different American hops.

FRIDAY AND SATURDAY

“We are really proud of the character and quality of the beers that we are able to make in one of the smallest brew eries in the area,” Justin says.

Having opened in May, Cork & Pig is one of Southlake’s newest haunts for delicious beers, wines and cocktails. “We utilize a wide range of resources — any where from recreating simple classics with a twist [to] authentically designing in-house specialty cocktails while utilizing local distilleries, personal experiences and our talented bartenders' innova tive secrets and creations,” says co-owner Vir giniaWhatDalbeck.makes the establishment’s extensive drink menu so delicious is its attention to detail. All the aromatic garnishes are dehydrated inhouse, and both the ice and the glasses are cus tomized for each and every drink. Cork & Pig’s on-tap beer selections also fea ture varieties from around the state, while its bottled selections hail from all over the globe. Some of the more sought-after cocktails include the fruit-forward Molly Ringwald Cosmo and the Piglet — a refreshing blend of mimosa and frose. Others stay late for after-dinner coffee drinks or one of their selection of irresistible ports.

“Our drinks are handcrafted with fresh ingredients and always have a unique twist,” owner Mo Noorali says. “We rotate through different spirits and keep a thoughtful selection on the menu that will appeal to every craft cocktail connoisseur.”

“We strive to think outside of the box and use ingredients and combinations that many would not attempt,” Mo says. “An example is our Scotch in Style, which features Highland Park 12 Scotch combined with a Sauvignon Blanc wine.” Open until 11 p.m. on Tuesdays through Thursdays and until midnight on Fridays and Satur days, Jane ensures residents can get their sip on whenever they feel like it.

KENDRA SCOTT COMING TO SOUTHLAKE Kendra Scott fans have a lot more than jewelry to look for ward to when the designer, entrepreneur and author comes to her Southlake Town Square store on Sept. 18. Promoting her newly published memoir, “Born To Shine,” Kendra shares how her love for fashion and philanthropy helped create one of the leading boutique jewelry businesses in the country. The Dragons have once again received top marks for their academic pursuits. Last month, the Texas Education Agency released its accountability ratings for school districts from the past school year. Not only did Carroll ISD return to its pre-pandemic ratings in 2018-2019 — it actually exceeded them with a score of 98 for an A rating. “We are extremely proud of the dedication and intentional work of our Dragon teachers and staff who prepare each day to serve all students and inspire excellence,” Carroll ISD Superintendent Dr. Lane Ledbetter says.

DRAGON DREAMERS WIN COOPERSTOWN DREAMS PARK TOURNAMENT

A team of Southlake-area 12U baseball players visited the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. The team was there to compete in the annual Cooperstown Dreams Park Tournament, along with 76 other 12-and-under teams from around the country. Through five rounds of the tourna ment, the Dragon Dreamers went 3-2 and secured a berth in the championship game against the No. 1 seeded team from Pennsylvania. In the final game, they defeated Beaver Valley 11-5, winning the championship trophy.

The Texas Longhorns officially have their starter, and it’s former Southlake Carroll quarterback Quinn Ewers. During two seasons as the Dragon’s starting quarterback, Ewers threw for 6,445 yards and 73 touchdowns. Nominated for The Landry Award in 2020, Ewers was also named to the 2021 Elite 11 roster, selected to be in the All-American Bowl and became the overall No. 1 recruit in his division with a five-star rating. College football fans across the country will be watching as the Longhorns open their season against Louisiana-Monroe with Ewers under center on Sept. 3 in Austin.

Steve Werner is looking forward to a new semester at Carroll ISD this fall. But while in previous years he roamed the halls as a seasoned educator certified in K-12 and special educa tion, this year marks the first time he comes to Eubanks Intermediate School as a school resource officer. “I wanted to become an SRO because I want to be able to give the students, the teachers and the staff a protective environ ment,” officer Werner says. “The most important part is giving the parents and the community a sense of security inside the school — that they’re going to leave their kids in a safe environment that promotes their growth.”

SOUTHLAKE CARROLL EARNS 2021-22 MAXPREPS CUP

The Dragons were awarded the 2021-22 MaxPreps Cup ahead of their first game of the season. Every year, MaxPreps awards the cup to the best overall high school sports pro grams in the country. With the Dragons winning state cham pionships for sports including boys cross-country, boys and girls swimming, girls soccer and baseball, Southlake Carroll earned the cup with 1,763 points, putting it well ahead of second-place finisher Argyle with 1,240 points. This honor comes after the Dragons also claimed this year’s 6A Lone Star Cup from the University Interscholastic League.

A new program director has been named to lead North Texas Performing Arts’ 2022-2023 season. Beginning as an intern for NTPA in 2018, Paige Price graduated from Ouachita Baptist University in 2021 with her bachelor’s in fine arts and musical theater. After graduating, she joined NTPA as a resident director before being promoted to her full-time role. During its first year in Southlake, the NTPA has put on several shows including “Annie Jr.,” “Frozen Jr.” and “Beauty And The Beast Jr.,” and will even be unveiling a holiday production this winter in “Elf Jr.” “I couldn’t be more thrilled to take on this exciting new role and bring my passion for the stage to the youth of Southlake,” Paige says.

As summer vacation has come to an end, so have the seasonal efforts of GRACE’s Feed Our Kids’ hundreds of volunteers. For the past 18 years, the Grapevine Relief And Community Exchange program has coordinated nutritious sack lunches to be prepared and delivered to several hosting sites throughout Grapevine. Even record heat couldn’t slow this group from delivering over 30,000 lunches this summer. “From the bottom of our hearts, thank you very much for a wonderful summer,” seasonal programs coordinator Beth Chernik says. “You served through the scorching heat and always brought your best volunteers, activities, meals and warm, kind, big hearts and smiles.”

CITY OF SOUTHLAKE CREATES ALLIANCE FOR COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

The Southlake Carroll Dragons have a new inflatable to lead them onto the field. Generously donated by the newly-estab lished Dragon Touchdown Club (DTC), this new inflatable dragon takes over after a strong 12-year run from the former Dragon football helmet. Comprised of a head and tail, the two sections combine to a staggering 54 feet long and 23 feet tall — twice the size of its predecessor. With flashing LED eyes and smoke-emitting nostrils, players will be running out of these jaws of victory for years to come. You can check out the Dragons’ new inflatable during their upcoming games against Keller Timber Creek and Haltom on Sept. 16 and 22.

Roy Rizwan is all about fashion. Since bringing his boutique shop XAR Clothier to Southlake Town Square in 2012, Roy has been sizing up men and women to create sharp, stunning looks that make heads turn. Now celebrating his shop’s 10th anniversary this month, it’s safe to say that Roy is well-suited for Southlake.

XAR Clothier Founder Crafts A Tailored Approach To Southlake Fashion

THE ONE THING ABOUT SOUTHLAKE IS THAT… people are extremely loyal. Residents here are always ready to support Southlake businesses. They’ve always had my back, and it always gives me immense pleasure to sup port my community in whatever ways I can.

I OPENED MY OWN STORE IN DALLAS IN… 2011. One of my clients kept insisting that I should check out the Southlake area and open a clothing store there. The following year, I introduced XAR Clothier to Southlake Town Square.

MY COLORS CHANGE… with the seasons. Over the summer, we introduced a lot of bright colors: A lot of vermillions, tangerines and bright yellows. This fall, you’ll see a lot of deeper hues such as burgundy, deep purples, browns, greens and navy blues. It’s going to be a season of rich colors.

I’M FAMOUS FOR… my jackets, my pocket squares and my flowers. If you see someone with a flower and a pocket square, you can tell that Roy dressed them up.

MY FAVORITE THING ABOUT XAR CLOTHIER IS… the confidence it brings people. When they’re wearing any thing from XAR and they receive compliments, it makes me feel good. When they take pictures and feel happy, that’s when I feel like my job is done. That makes my day every time.

CUSTOMER SERVICE HAS… always been my No. 1 priority and the secret behind my success. We don’t believe in judging people here, and we give them all of our best service. Whether they come in only to browse the collection or spend a million dollars, every customer receives the same experience. We believe in treating everyone equally.

FIVE MINUTES with ... 50 • SEP 22

I’VE ALWAYS HAD… an eye for fashion. In my culture, the expectation is to become a doctor, lawyer or engineer. Instead, I went to fashion school. It always came naturally to me. It’s an extension of who I am.

FASHION IN SOUTHLAKE HAS CHANGED… a lot since I’ve come here. We used to see a lot of traditional navy jackets, khaki pants and men sometimes wearing one size bigger than they needed to. Today, their style stands out. When you go to a party, you can tell when someone is wearing XAR.

AFTER GRADUATING, I… worked [in fashion sales] for about 11 years. We went through rigorous training, and that helped me eventually become the No. 1 salesperson in the U.S. In this field, you have to learn to wear many hats at the same time when you’re on the sales floor.

I AM BLESSED WITH… the ability to look at my clients and immediately tell their size. When anyone walks into my store, I can take a look at them and know how tall they are. I can tell their waistline, neckline, shirt and shoe size. This comes with years of practice and experience. In my case, I’ve had 27 years of experience.

I ALWAYS KNOW THE FASHION TRENDS… three years ahead because I look at what’s going on internationally. In terms of global fashion trends, we’re always a few years behind. That said, I know that old school [style] will be coming back, along with the double-breasted jackets and pleated pants. We may not be immediately ready for some fashion trends, but we always manage to catch up.

WHEN I MOVED INTO MY CURRENT SPACE IN… 2020, I fortunately had room to bring both men’s and women’s clothing under the same roof. I always try to have some thing that a couple will love together and complements what the other is wearing. For instance, if somebody chooses a yellow jacket, I will try to contrast it with gray or brown.

YOU DON’T NORMALLY SEE… a lot of colors in other fashion stores. Many people are afraid to introduce and combine different colors, and as a result, they stick mostly with black and cognac. My store is unique in that our pieces pop off of the stands with color, and people see that the minute they walk in. Fashion is ever-evolving, so I always try to bring in something different and see what works for my clients.

With Southlake’s larger swaths of land becoming more and more scarce, the city is stepping away from master-built communities. In their place, single custom-built homes are popping up all over town just like the one at 1232 Wood sey Court. Listed for $2,350,000, this brand-new 5,500-square-foot Clay Custom home sits off of Continental Avenue and near Old Union Elemen tary — and it spares little when it comes to design.

No mantle, no problem. Clean lines flow throughout the living room thanks to a minimal ist gas fireplace seemingly suspended in air above a litany of contemporary dark wood floating cabi nets. The custom-painted back wall creates the perfect contrast and space for large format art work that ties the room together with ease. Then sit back and enjoy the views with a glass of wine selected from the nearby glass door wine cellar.

“I met [Jeff] when I was 16 at the Four Seasons [in Hawaii],” Bobby says. “He was the chef, and I was apply ing for an internship. He took me under his wing, and we ended up becoming great friends through that.”After Jeff sold his restaurant in Naples, Florida in 2020, Bobby convinced him to come to Texas and open Au Troisieme with him. “It amazed us how many people came and sup ported the restaurant,” Bobby says. “It was fun to see that I knew almost nobody in the dining room — that these were all people that had heard about us and had been waiting for us to open and to try ourSteppingfood.” into the restaurant, guests are immedi ately greeted with a cozy color palette of green, blue and brown, accented with pops of orange and yel

here’s a new restaurant joining the neighbor hood. Au Troisieme, a bistro located in North Dallas, opened its doors this past summer to the delight of foodies old and young. With a focus on global cuisine and a heart for its patrons, the restaurant aims to be a permanent fixture on the city’s food“Auscene.Troisieme means ‘third place’ in French,” owner Bobby Pollette says. “You hang out at home, you hang out at your office. We want this to be your third place.”

Nearly two years in the works, the concept is the brainchild of Bobby and his business partner Jeff Acol, both of whom grew up in Hawaii.

On the weekends, diners that come in early enough will get to experience Au Troisieme’s spectacular house-made brunch spread. The restaurant’s classic French toast comes complete with spiced maple syrup, whipped cream and ber ries, while the avocado BLT serves sizzling bacon, arugula, heirloom tomatoes and a poached egg stacked on a slice of sourdough bread. Meanwhile, the hearty corned beef hash comes with its own side of two poached eggs, hollandaise and a biscuit. And brunch guests shouldn’t miss out on the fancy Fish Locomoco, which is grilled swordfish with fried rice, a fried egg and soy burre blanc, or the steak and eggs made up of wagyu beef, two eggs and greens. With the tagline “A Great Good Place,” Au Troisieme em bodies all of that and more. So schedule a date night, get to gether with friends or just sip some cocktails at the bar at one of the Metroplex’s newest establishments. “It’s nice to finally be able to answer all the text messag es [saying] that we’re open rather than saying soon, soon, soon,” Bobby says.

Beer lovers will especially appreciate the restaurant’s three tap offerings, which include Peroni, Lakewood Lager and El Chingon IPA. Those who can’t get enough wine will delight in the restaurant’s eight white varieties, seven red se lections and two sparkling options as well. When it’s time to order, Au Troisieme has a comprehen sive menu that covers any craving you may have. Start off with a sharable dish like the fried green tomatoes, served with white cheddar pimento cheese, dill and carrot aioli, or the mezze platter that includes crudites, whipped feta and fattoush, both of which provide delicious savory flavors.

One of the restaurant’s more popular dishes include the smoked duroc pork chop, which is served alongside a root medley, bourbon gastrique and sweet potato brulee. Mean while, seafood fans will salivate over entrees like the tuna and foie, featuring cured tuna, smokey ponzu and foie tor chon, and the salmon served with Israeli couscous, Marcona almonds, lemon, roasted heirloom tomatoes, Texas goat cheese and citrus butter.

“We focused on using only premium spirits, housemade syrups, purees and large-format ice. The spirits selected fall into the craft spirits category, so you won’t find them on many back bars at your local watering hole,” Nicole says. “In addition, we curated a rotating list of rare and allocated spirits, primarily whiskey and bourbon.” Whether you want to celebrate a special occasion or simply spend an evening in the 1920s, make a point to stop by Magnum Speakeasy.

After finding a seat, patrons can choose from a bevy of beverage options, with drinks exclusive to the speakeasy and on a seasonal rotation. Some of the most popular drinks include the Magnum Margarita, made with Cincoro Anejo Tequila, Grand Marnier Louis Alexander, lime juice and gold salt, and the Gold Fashioned, which features Maker’s Mark Cask Strength Bourbon, Liquor 43, angos tura cocoa bitters and gold. For those looking for a fruit ier drink, the Seltzer Of The Queen showcases Chopin Vodka, Frankly Pomegranate Vodka, Yellow Chartreuse and house-made orange-basil seltzer.

If you want to escape to a place where the ambiance is exquisite and the drinks are flowing, step into the past at Hotel Vin’s Magnum Speakeasy. With a telephone booth entrance and vintage drinks and decor, the concept is reminiscent of the 1920s.

Step Into The

“Before transforming the space into an intimate speakeasy, Magnum was being used as a private meet ing room,” says Nicole Haarklau, Hotel Vin’s director of food and beverage. “As a team, we brainstormed ways to better utilize the space and unanimously decided that the room would be a perfect fit for a Prohibition-style speakeasy.”Withjust 18 seats, guests are highly recommended to reserve a spot ahead of time for a 90-minute seating. Once guests have checked in, they receive a secret code from the host at Bacchus Kitchen + Bar and are escorted into a telephone booth. After picking up the phone and listening to a message from Clint Eastwood, patrons can enter the code and walk through a secret door into the speakeasy.“Magnum has continued to organically evolve into the place to go for date night, anniversaries and even a good nightcap,” Nicole says. “The concept has been well re ceived, and hotel guests love the amenity of a speakeasy without having to venture off the property.”

After he passed away in 1984, Bert Concessions was passed down to family members over the years until it reached his grandson. Since then, Nick Jr. has successfully kept his grandfather’s legacy alive and well through the ad ditions of several new staples like the Texas Fried Fritos Pie, Fried Pecan Pie and the Lucky Duck Dumplin’. The Longest-Running Vendors Behind The State Fair Of Texas

Tasty Texan Traditions

T

here’s a reason why the State Fair of Texas is one of the longest-running celebrations in the Lone Star State. Since 1886, this annual festival has at tracted over 2 million fans to Fair Park every year, with families enjoying the rides, shows, attractions and of course, the fried food. While this year will feature new and inventive variations of fried goodness, we’re going to focus on beloved staples like Sweet Connie’s candy apples and Fletcher’s Original Corny Dogs, some of which even predate Big Tex’s arrival in 1952. Together, they keep the fair faith ful coming back year after year.

Fletcher’s Original Corny Dogs

One of the most recognizable treats from the state fair un doubtedly comes from Fletcher’s Original Corny Dogs. Before Neil and Carl Fletcher were dipping battered hot dogs into the fryer, they were vaudeville performers at the state fair. As they were on their way out of show business, they stumbled onto a cook who was baking hot dogs inside cornbread. When they discovered frying the dog cut cooking time in half, the corny dog was born. While their original 1942 recipe remains a popular favorite, the corny dog stand has since expanded to include additional flavors such as jalapeno, cheese and even brisket. “My dad took me as a child to get Fletcher’s corny dogs all the time, and his father took him — and that’s the story we kind of hear from everyone,” Neil’s granddaughter Amber says. “It’s a family tradition and a Texas tradition.”

filled with duck bacon, cream cheese and sweet corn and was named a finalist in last year’s Big Tex Choice Awards. “I’m always looking and creating new products for the fair, just like my dad and grandpa always would,” Nick Jr. says. “Family and tradition are what’s held us together and kept us going all this time.”

If Tami Nevins-Mayes looks familiar, it may be because of her appearance on national television. Earlier this year, Tami and her 70-year family business, Nevins Concessions, made a guest appearance on A&E’s “Deep Fried Dynasty,” showing a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to be part of the state fair. Since airing last spring, excitement is at an all-time high for Nevins Concessions, not just for its iconic Barnyard Burg er served with a bacon cheeseburger and chicken-fried chick en patty, but also for its tater twisters, chocolate-dipped nutty bars, peach bellinis and its all-new wagyu on a stick. “We have a lot of pride in what we put over the counter,” Tami says. “That’s why we have third- and fourth-generation customers coming back to see us year after year.”

Sweet Connie’s Before she came to the state fair, Isabel Lusk, otherwise known as “Apple Annie,” was living in Ireland where she learned how to make candied apples beside her mother. After she immi grated and opened her own stand at the state fair in 1936, it didn’t take long for fairgoers to fall in love with her family’s special recipe. Affectionately named after Isabel’s daughter, Sweet Connie’s was an immediate hit with fairgoers enjoying not only their candy apples, but their caramel and chocolatedipped apples as well. Today, Isabel’s granddaughter Robin continues to keep Sweet Connie’s thriving by offering other items like chocolate-dipped strawberries and margaritas. Even with the new offerings, the apples continue to remain as the stand’s biggest hit. “Every time I dip an apple, I can still hear my mom like the first time she was teaching me,” Robin says. “There are so many family memories here.”
