Volume 3 Issue 7 December 2012

In this issue: Holiday Party .......... 1 Key Leader .............. 2

The Key Club holiday party was a ton of fun! We got to go bowling, which is something that I do not normally get the chance to do. At first we started bowling a normal game; however by the end of the party we were all singing, dancing, and happily eating pizza. My favorite part of the party was having fun with my friends from Key Club and getting to know other key clubbers who I do not normally get the chance to talk to. It is a great experience and it really brought our club together as a community.

Key Leader BY SOFIA FERNANDEZ

On Friday, instead of hanging out downtown with my friends, I got into a carpool with some sophomores that I didn't really know on a long ride to the middle of nowhere. The campus was in Port Murray, surrounded by a forest and farms. I kept thinking, "What have I gotten myself into?" After we settled down and chose our bunk beds, we headed downstairs to do an activity in which we were encouraged to meet new people. Later, everyone headed towards the Mess Hall for dinner. I chose to sit at a table with people I did not know. We started to get to know each other and I found out that they were all Juniors, but they were so welcoming and funny that it didn't matter that I was a Freshman.

Over the course of the weekend we did many activities that bonded us and taught us what a Key Leader was and how to become a better one. We split up into different groups of people, called Neighborhoods. We each had to name our Neighborhood. Ours, for example, was "The Spontaneous Combusting Bunnies". Throughout the weekend we all worked with our neighborhoods to discover and define what we thought a Key Leader was. We spent the afternoon learning about the five pillars of leadership: Integrity, Growth, Respect, Community and Excellence. In our last group activity,

we all made a circle and each of us had to describe the retreat in one word. For me, that word was "Inspiring".

I am sure that everyone who attended the Weekend Retreat got something out of it, whether it was having an amazing time meeting new people or being inspired to make a difference. During the Key Leader Retreat, I certainly discovered what I can do to become a better Key Leader so I can help my community grow. I met many friendly people who have the same goals. Plus, I had a lot of fun! Without a doubt, Key Leader was an amazing experience and I will definitely consider participating again next year.

Holiday Food Drive BY BHAVITHA KOTHA (Committee Head)

This Holiday break, we wrapped up the second week of our annual food drive at the Millburn ShopRite. We were freezing but smiling as we sang holiday songs and collected donations for the Hillside Food Bank. Key Clubbers were outside the supermarket from 1 – 4:30 PM on Friday December 28th and from 11 AM – 4 PM on Sunday the 30th.

A big thank you to all the members who came by to help out during your time off — you did great! We collected about $175 as well as several bags of food. It wasn’t as much as previous weekends, but we did well for having lost a day to snow as well as for having had few shoppers and volunteers during the busy holiday season.

This Food Drive was especially important this year because of Hurricane Sandy. Because of the storm, there have been more families in need of the relief the food bank could give. The food bank itself also lost 80,000 pounds of produce and 20,000 pounds of dairy products during the hurricane, so every donation was helpful!

Thanks to everyone who helped complete another successful food drive, from the President to the committee heads to the general members. We hope you’ll all come again next year! (Even the seniors, come as donators!)

Membership Awards Around this time of year, Key Clubbers have begun to accumulate lots of community service hours. We, the officers, want to reward those who have gone above and beyond in their service and dedication to our club’s causes. Starting at this meeting, members who have either 15 or 30 community service hours will receive certificates. Within every newsletter, there will be a box like the one at the bottom of this page displaying members who have achieved membership awards during that month.

You will receive this if you accumulate between 15 and 30 community service hours in a given month. This means that you are a dedicated member and have a very bright future as an awesome Key Club Member!

You will receive this if you accumulate 30 or more community service hours in a given month. This means that you are a very highly dedicated member and should consider taking on a greater role/responsibility within our club – you are a star contributor!

Hello everyone! This upcoming month is going to be so much fun! It’s going to be jam-packed with support for Eliminate, our district project. For starters, we have bracelet sales, which have turned out to be a great success. So far, we have raised about $200 for the Eliminate program. That’s enough to save over 100 lives. If you have not yet turned in money for the bracelets that you’ve sold, you have until January 15th to do so. Next, we have our second Red Mango night of the service year. It will be on Tuesday, January 22nd from 3pm to 10pm at the Millburn Red Mango. This is a great opportunity to take a break from midterm studying and enjoy a delicious frozen yogurt treat. Remember, 20% of your purchase will go to the Eliminate Program! Every purchase definitely helps. Also, please notice that it will be taking place RIGHT AFTER THE MEETING on Tuesday. So while you’re on your way home, you can stop at Red Mango to enjoy a cup of awesome. And lastly, I have a very fun special fundraising event for Eliminate planned for the month of January. It involves receiving hours and candy! More details to come! Yours in Caring and Service,
