Thanksgiving Food Drive By: Abby Ow

Hunger isn’t a problem that’s just confined to third world countries in Africa or Asia, it’s right here in America in our local community. Thanksgiving is a holiday dedicated to giving thanks for having enough food and to celebrate family. A big turkey dinner is the icon of Thanksgiving. It’s saddening to think that there are families in our towns that can’t afford to buy one or two cans of food to eat during Thanksgiving, much less a 20 pound turkey. There’s a cruel irony in not having food to eat on Thanksgiving. Usually, the families stuck in the cycle of poverty are helpless against their position in society. They don’t have anything to celebrate during Thanksgiving because there is literally no point in celebrating. And Key Club is here to help those families in need. The Thanksgiving Food is one of Key Club’s main events during the service year. This year, finding locations to host the food drive was the main challenge the committee heads had to overcome. Shoprite initiated a new no solicitation policy that cut off the Key Club from it’s main food collecting location. The other grocery stores have similar policies in place, so there was only one food drive held at the Maplewood Kings. However, it was

a very successful food drive. The volunteers collected pounds of food and over $700 dollars for the Community Food Bank of New Jersey. The fantastic news is that one dollar of donation is equivalent to 16 dollars in food because the food bank purchases its’ items in bulk. The fact that a handful of Key Clubbers working for half a day can raise $10200 worth of food is a reminder of why we are all in Key Club. Everyone’s effort can make a difference. Key Club also did a great job getting the homerooms to donate food to our food drive. Things were a little slow going at first; the first weigh in amounted to 300 pounds of food. But then people must have realized that the drive was ending and their chance to donate was going to disappear soon. The second weigh in of food lead to a grand total of a little over 750 pounds of food. It’s humbling to think that each homeroom’s contributions made an actual difference in a person’s life. The hassle of the people who brought in a few cans of food in the morning is greatly appreciated by Key Club and the members of the community they helped. The Thanksgiving Food Drive continued its legacy of being a great event and next year will be even better!

Members of the Month By: Nikita Verma

Abby Ow and Kathleen Gao have both been incredibly helpful and dedicated members this month. They were both the Committee Heads for the Thanksgiving Food Drive and they both committed to the role to yield the best results. Abby and Kathleen were both generous members of Key Club in the month of November by displaying her dedication while leading the Thanksgiving Food Drive. They had to persistently call grocery stores calling them for available slots for collecting canned goods, as well as reached out to many Key Clubbers to encourage their help. Abby also volunteered to write in the Millburn Key to spread awareness for poverty in New Jersey. A big part of being a leader in a club like Key Club is working with others and gaining support, they have demonstrated this useful skill and because of them we were able to collect hundreds of cans of food for the New Jersey Community Food Bank.

Members of the Month Cont.. By: Nikita Verma

Tori Stonza has also been an committed member throughout the month and service year. Although only a Freshman, she has consistently shown dedication to Key Club by volunteering in numerous events and helping out older officers. She is always present at Key Club events and makes Key Club her priority which is an admirable trait. We cannot wait to see what else Tori brings to the Key Club table in the years to come.
