Key

NJ District Fall Rally By: Lisa Woolfson The NJ District Fall Rally 2014 was definitely one of the highlights of the service year, so far. Over 3000 Key Club members from all over New Jersey gathered for the fun and informative day. The event had been widely anticipated for weeks - everyone enjoys fast-paced roller coasters combined with the latest district news! The first few hours, the thousands of members attending sat in a grand stadium before the animated District Board. The officers were introduced one by one, each dressed as his or her favorite animated character. They alternated speaking to

the audience

about creative

strategies in ad-

vocacy and

fundraising for

ELIMINATE and

UNICEF. The

board spoke

about the plans

for the near fu-

ture. Finally, the

ceremony

concluded with

the traditional

Spirit Stick - the

award given to

the New Jersey

Division with

the ‘most spirit’,

in other words,

the one with the

loudest cheers.

After the ceremony, the Six Flags Great Adventure began. Under the warm sun, Key Club members enjoyed food and scary coasters galore. Personally, I made memories and took pictures there that I will never forget. Overall, it was a fantastic way to spend the day with friends and support both my division (Division 15) and the NJ District of Key Club. The Fall Rally is definitely not an event to miss next service year!

Key Club Talent show

By Kathleen Gao Millburn High School’s Key Club is centered around local community service as well as raising awareness for international charities and projects. Coordinated by committee heads Miranda Kasher and Leonard Santos, the 11th annual Key Club Talent Show took place the evening of October 18, 2014 at Millburn Middle School.

Featuring a program of twenty-two Millburn High School students, the show’s main goal was to raise money for the Eliminate Project. All proceeds, including those from refreshments, tickets, raffles, and costume contest votes, went to Kiwanis International and UNICEF to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus. Key Club President Evanie Anglade was “glad to see that everyone was stepping up to help the Eliminate Project. Everyone was so enthusiastic about coming.”

The theme was superheroes; the Key Club volunteers, as well as the performers, were dressed for an early Halloween. A costume contest was held to celebrate the Halloween spirit and simultaneously raise money for the Eliminate Project. Audience members were encouraged to vote for their favorite costumes by by putting money into bags with each performer’s picture on the front. The winner was Robby Aronson, who was dressed as a soccer player. In addition to the costume contest, people participated in the raffles sponsored by the Millburn Diner, Umi Sushi, Emack and Bolio’s, and LaStrada.

Key Club Editor Nikita Verma warmly received the fundraising efforts: “It all goes to a good cause and I love the arts. I think it’s a great way to bring the community together.”

Judged by Geoffrey Mutchnik, Samuel Morgan, and the reactions of

the audience, the talent show concluded with the announcement of the most laudable and memorable acts. “I was excited to see my peers perform, and was so impressed by their talents,” said Darice Lee, a Key Club member volunteering at the show. The third place winner was Daniel Fu, who performed a poi routine to “Digidrop” by Rameses B. and received a prize of twenty dollars. Millie Dweck was awarded second place and thirty dollars for her cover of Adele’s “One and Only”. The grand prize went to the Millburn High School Piano Trio, which was comprised of Shantanu Laghate on the piano, Satyen Gupta on the cello, and Alexander Ren with the violin. Performing an orchestral rendition of “If I Lose Myself” by OneRepublic, the ensemble took the first place award of fifty dollars. Millburn’s acapella group, Soulfege, was also well-received. They led the national anthem, followed by the first act, a cover of The Cure’s “Pictures of You”. Another audience favorite was Shannon Peng, who sang “Iris” by the Goo Goo Dolls. She was also the creator of the trailers and advertisements promoting the talent show.

The 2014 Key Club Talent Show was a collaborative effort on the parts of the performers, the sponsors, the audience, and the volunteers of the club. In working towards raising money and awareness for the Eliminate Project, the fundraiser was able to harness the talents of Millburn High School students and create an even larger impact on society.

Abi Santos has demonstrated great motivation and effort with the work she put in the Key Club Talent Show. He helped MC the event and helped organize and plan the whole show. She also helped start the Thanksgiving Food drive. Best of all she did all this as a freshman! Great work Abi! Keep it up!!

Another outstanding general member is Eloise Burn. She is currently a sophomore and this is her second year of service in club. This month especially she has demonstrates excellence by finding numerous sponsors for the Key Club Talent Show.

She did this promptly and with great enthusiasm.

Trick or Treat for UNICEF By: Nikita Verma

This year was an especially unique year for the annual UNICEF Halloween event. This year, UNICEF and Kiwanis joined forces and all the proceeds from the spook-tacuar night are going to the ELIMINATE project!! As Key Clubbers, we took full advantage of this opportunity and raised over 100 dollars!! We look forward to this event every year as this year certainly did not disappoint.
