The Millburn Key Halloween/ Post-Hurricane Sandy Issue

Volume 3 Issue 5 October 2012

In this issue: Fall Rally .................. 1 Talent Show ............ 2 Car Wash ................ 4

On October 7th, three thousand key-clubbers gathered at Six Flags Great Adventure for the annual Fall Rally. As they entered the park, they were greeted by the sight of the park fountain decorated for Fright Fest and headed to opening ceremonies. In the Great Lake Grandstand, excitement was in the air as everyone cheered on their divisions, which is division 14 for Millburn Key Club. Everyone settled down and listened to the Fall Rally presentations given by our district officers as they discussed topics such as involvement with Kiwanis after high school. At ten-thirty, the park was open for everyone to go on the rides for the rest of the day. It was cold and rainy outside, but that was not about to stop our fun. Although some attractions such as the Ferris Wheel and El Toro were closed occasionally throughout the day, the weather also meant shorter lines for Millburn High School Key Club

most things. Some rides such as Skull Mountain, Dark Night, and Runaway Mine Train even let people stay on for a second round. For many people, the day ended with a visit to the candy shop and pictures in front of the Halloween decorations. No Key Club Fall rally for Millburn Key Club is complete, however, without a group picture. Afterwards, the bus was loaded, and it was time to say goodbye to all of the other key clubbers from New Jersey. It was definitely an amazing day for everyone, and it was a great experience to be surrounded by thousands of other people that all care about the same cause.

Talent Show BY CHAERIN AHN (Vice President)

On October 20, 2012, our club hosted the 9th Annual Key Club Talent Show. It was a massive success, involving more performers than we’d ever had and raising money for the ELIMINATIE project. The Show was opened by our three lovely emcees Karen Fich, Medha Tandon, and James Yoon, dressed up as Natalie Portman, Louise Brooks, and Psy. Following their intro was No Stand (Christopher McHugh, Leonard Santos, Alec Gevarter) performing “Animal” by Neon Tree. Then the pumped up audience listened to Rebecca Van Voorhees play piano and sing “Forever and Almost Always” by Kate Voegele. A cappella group Soulfege was handed the baton, performing “Somebody to Love” by Queen. James Yoon was on the stage again, this time to play “Etude #1 for Clarinet” by Cyrille Rose. Aanchal Sahay singing “Melt My Heart to Stone” by Adele,

Leonard Santos playing piano and singing “Happy Endings” by Mika, Anthony Joo singing “Never Say Never” by The Fray, and Anna Antselevich singing “Love Song” by Sara Bareilles blew the audience’s mind with their astonishing voices. Alana Yeager and Stephanie Cabrera played acoustic guitars and sang “I Won’t Go Home Without You” by Maroon 5, melting everyone with their beautiful harmonies. After Jeffery Lai played “Prelude in G Minor” by

Rachmaninoff on piano, making the crowd drop their jaws, Lindsay Maron sang her original arrangement of “Les Misérables” songs by ClaudeMichel Schönberg. And in the last performance in the first act, Asian Club showed up and dropped a bomb on the audience, dancing to “Gangnam Style” by Psy. The curtain was closed for the intermission when cheers and loud applause filled the auditorium. When everyone was back in their seats and the show resumed, everyone immediately got the chills once again. The spotlights were on Tali Zusman and Laura Albino, playing guitar and singing “Lights” by Ellie Goulding. After Kevin Li splendidly played “All of Me” by Jon Schmidt on piano, Dani Hilzenrath in her adorable costume sang “You May Be Right” by Billy Joel with a powerful voice. Josh Bain, accompanied by Andrew Vollavanh playing piano, sang “I Can’t Make You Love Me” by Bonnie Raitt. When the audience was left touched, Anya Parker-Lentz took the stage with her original song. After her was Chris McHugh, also known as Darkwind, beatboxing, dancing, rapping, and singing to his original song “Everything I’ve Got”. Then Isabelle Petito on the stage with her guitar, singing “Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right” by Bob Dylan. When Hassan Syed’s original arrangement “The Electronic Show” started to play, he was ready to take the audience’s 2

Talent Show Continued breath away with his amazing dance moves. Everyone thought they could not be any more amazed but Flora Sugarman played piano singing “It’s Time” by Imagine Dragons and Ashley McLeroy played ukulele singing “Valerie” by Amy Winehouse. For the already breathless audience, Nicholas Greenberg played “Autumn Leaves” on jazz guitar showing off his stellar skills. Then, the house burst into laughter as Sylvia Levy sang the Justin Bieber song “Boyfriend”. It was sad the second act had to come to an end, but Anya Parker-Lentz’ Band playing their original song “Wake Up Alice” was the best way to close it up.

Now the best of performances of the night were to be decided. Our special judges, the most beloved couple of MHS, Mr. and Mrs. English and Millburn talent agent Allison Quartin judged each performance based on the criteria of talent, execution, and audience reaction. While they were determining the results, the talented performers still kept the audience dazzled and astonished. Lindsay Maron sang “Say the Word” by Kait Kerrigan and Brian Lowdermilk, Tali Zusman and Laura Albino played guitar and sang with gorgeous harmonies, Chris McHugh performed his original “Darkwind’s Unforgettable Awesome

Performance of Power Revisited”, and Victoria Nachevnik, accompanied by Nicholas Greenberg, sang “Everybody” by Ingrid Michaelson. As Victoria sang the last chorus, the cast came onto the stage, clapping and dancing, to join her and Nicholas. The emcees and Key Club President Marlee Birnberg thanked everyone who contributed to the wonderful night. It was time to announce the winners of the 9th Annual Key Club Talent Show. Asian Club’s dance “Gangnam Style” won 3rd place, Jeffrey Lai’s “Prelude in G Minor” on piano and Lindsay Maron’s song “Les Misérables Arrangement” tied for 2nd place, and Hassan Syed’s solo dance in “The Electronic Show” placed 1st. With a total number of 29, this year’s Talent Show had more performances than any previous year. It was a shame only a few of them could be awarded, for all of them were stunningly talented. To end this article, I will give you a lovely little story from the end of the night: Mrs. English gave us a letter thanking our club for inviting them, even before we thanked them for dedicating their night for our Show. Can they be any sweeter?

Car Wash Recap BY LAUREN WENSLAU (Committee Head)

On Saturday, October 13th, the Millburn Key Club held a free car wash. Yes, you read that right, a FREE carwash. You may be thinking: how does one raise money through a free car wash? Well, rather than charging people a fixed amount for us to wash their cars, we accepted donations. Many people were very generous. In total, we raised $630!!! This surprisingly large sum went to the ELIMINATE project and to finance other club expenses.

Here, Key Clubbers exibit their enthusiasm for fundraising and service.

Here, member Leonard Santos shows his excitement for Key Club.

What began as a freezing morning eventually turned into a nice fall day. Starting at 8:30 am, tons of volunteers were hard at work washing and drying cars and advertising throughout town. It was amazing to see how many Key Club members showed up in order to support our club! Although it was overwhelming at times due to the sheer number of customers, everyone still had a great tim. While washing cars, we listened to music and sang along, hopelessly trying to harmonize with each other. We also had a lot of laughs. For example, a man accidently left his sunroof open until after we finished washing his car. As unfortunate as this was, we were able to easily dry the interior of his car and luckily nothing was damaged. In the end it was all in good fun. It was truly a great time. Thank you to all of the volunteers who gave up their Saturday mornings to help Key Club!
