Estes Encourages Women to Join Industry

You likely wouldn’t be shocked to read that the trucking industry is 90 percent male, but, if there’s one point I want to make, it’s that there is space for more women to come on board. There are many opportunities for a prosperous and rewarding career. It’s all about finding a company culture that understands that outcomes are improved when people with different viewpoints have a seat at the table. Estes values a diverse workforce, and we affirmatively seek to hire women, minorities, veterans and individuals with disabilities. Among other efforts, we post our jobs to a variety of websites oriented toward obtaining diversity. I am proud that our company makes a genuine effort to empower all employees to pursue opportunities for advancement. In my 27 years at Estes Express Lines, I’ve seen this in practice throughout the organization every day. As Estes has grown tremendously over the past 89 years, it has never lost its family-owned mindset that views employees as its most important asset – providing them with the resources and support to grow professionally while still maintaining a healthy work-life balance. One example of this is our in-house driver training program. While this is open to all employees, my female colleagues especially appreciate it because it allows them the opportunity to obtain their CDL license during their workday. Similarly, I’m proud of the parental leave benefit Estes offers. Too many women in the national workforce don’t feel supported when they take time to focus on their growing families. Estes truly celebrates this special moment in its employees’ lives and supports them while they are on leave and as they transition back to work. We have also worked with our employees to support their need for leave due to schools and daycares being closed. As a woman who has risen to the level of Vice President, I want to see more strong women join the ranks and make a mark on the industry. And there’s a seat open next to us women at Estes. n

“I’ve been driving for 13 years, and this is a dream job for me.

I’ve heard lots of people who don’t think women are tough enough to be pick-up and delivery drivers, and I’m happy Estes gave me the opportunity to prove them all wrong. This is one of the best companies for a parent to work for, or any woman. I appreciate being able to make a good living, and also having a great balance with home life versus being out on the road. I can keep up with my responsibilities as a mom and have time with my family.” – LaWanda B., P&D Driver Estes Express Lines
