New Index to Benchmark Diversity and Inclusion
DIVERSITY INCLUSION
In a male-dominated industry, best practices in diversity and inclusion can be hard to find. Women In Trucking is working to change that. In November, the organization will launch the WIT Diversity & Inclusion Index, developed in partnership with online driver training provider CarriersEdge. The new initiative will take a deep dive into industry-wide efforts to create a more inclusive workplace for both driving and non-driving staff. Industry fleets will be invited to participate in the program which will help to document diversity programs currently in use, share best practices and recognize creative solutions in different areas.
The program will benchmark diversity and inclusivity efforts enterprise-wide, from hiring to onboarding, management, coaching and leadership development. Interviews with company representatives and anonymous employee surveys will be used to capture program ideas and feedback on overall effectiveness.
“Women In Trucking has made great strides in improving the workplace experience for women, both on and off the road but there’s still more to do,” explains WIT President and CEO Ellen Voie. “This Index will help us to quantify where we are today with diversity and inclusivity efforts, provide a benchmark against which to measure our progress, and establish a set of proven steps to help on that journey.” The Index is the culmination of a months-long effort from a task force led by WIT Vice President Debbie Sparks and comprised of WIT members from both fleets and industry suppliers. The first edition will open for applications in March 2021, with results to be unveiled in Fall 2021. The task force will provide more information at the virtual Accelerate! conference Nov. 12, 2020, from 1–2 p.m. Central time in a session titled “Taking Transportation Forward: The WIT Diversity & Inclusion Index.” Presenters will outline details of the program, the data collection process, and plans for sharing best practices, and provide helpful tips for improving diversity. n
