EXECUTIVE CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE Well hello again! We are just about at the end of our first month of access to our beautiful new artificial pitches. I trust we’ve all had the opportunity to have a kick around on the fields. Some of us, (myself included), are still looking forward to our first game on the surface. With the extra time we can all enjoy training and playing, it bodes well for the potential improvements in our own play and personal levels of fitness. You may have observed a small igloo like looking object at the end of the verandah in the past week or two. This is our new pizza oven which will be operational in the next week or two, so watch out for our

Italiano el fresco bar at the far end of the clubrooms. Now with the end of the season in sight, a reminder the First Team has a run in to the end of season that needs the support of the Club. Make sure you come on down to the Club for the 5 o’clock kick offs every Saturday this month. Here’s to a great month of football! Regards

Martin Bell

SENIOR CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE Hi everyone, As the season moves on, many leagues have now split into subsidiary groups; signalling the final push for a potential title, gaining promotion or just avoiding the drop. Well done to Diamond Geezers (Mens Champs Div) for already securing the title. Some of the others still in the hunt are; the Screaming Eagles (Div 10), the Rangers (Over30s Div 2) and Kosmos (Over40s Div 2). Looking at our fantastic facilities now, I see this as our legacy to all those that enjoy football. I would like my children to continue to benefit from it and in time, their children too. However, to do this we need to have pride in it and treat the fields and facilities with care. I would just ask that you consider the following when around the club: • Don’t wear metal studs or high heels on the pitch (personally, I find high heels very hard to play in!) • Clean your boots or shoes on the boot cleaners by the gates prior to entry on to the field. • Don’t climb the fences—use a gate. We will endeavour to ensure the relevant gates are open, but already large numbers of people are climbing the fences at various points around the grounds, many doing so a few metres from an open gate. This is already starting to damage the fences, which the club will have to repair at its own expense. • Don’t leave rubbish or empty drink bottles lying around, and if you do see any

rubbish, please help us by picking it up and placing into the bins. • Pick up the temporary fences—if you see the temporary fences have fallen over, don’t stand on them or leave them down—just help pick them up (staggering them in a zigzag helps in the wind). Already, many are damaged and cracked—these have to last us for many years. • Please ensure your games finish on the time allocated. All the times are allocated to ensure the maximum number of games can be played. It is your own team’s responsibility to ensure the game finishes on time—consideration needs to be shown for other teams waiting. It may even mean the referee has to calculate shorter halves to finish on time—but this won’t happen if everyone respects the rule. So, enough with the housekeeping rules and on with the second half of the season—good luck to you all in the remaining games and don’t forget to come up to the bar afterwards for a drink and something to eat, as well as supporting the teams playing after you.

Mark Evans

JUNIOR/YOUTH COMMITTEE MESSAGE Hi Everyone, First of all, great to see everyone out on the new pitches. I am sure everyone is enjoying them and the feedback to date has all been positive. It is a fantastic sight to come down over the weekend and see all the kids from 5 to 15 running around and using these fantastic facilities that we now have at our Club. Western Springs now has the best set up in Auckland and every other Club that visits has been very impressed with what we can now offer, soon we might even take them for granted (!!), however there is a constant reminder when we travel to other Clubs who still have pitch challenges! Finally, thanks to those people that are following the pitch rules, especially keeping their boots clean. it is in our interest to look after the grounds to get a long term benefit. We are heading into the back end of the season and it is worth checking out those teams that are performing well across the grades and might even have a chance of winning their division. For these teams it may be a “Year of the Swans”:

Boys

10th Premier Grade Firebolts– 2nd on the table with two games in hand

10th Grade Div. 1B Espanyol– 2nd on the table with a game in hand

11th Premier Grade Cruzeiro– 2nd on the table

12th Grade Div 4 Santos– 1st on table

12th Grade Div 4 Baros– 2nd on table

13th Grade Div 3 Galaxy– 2nd equal on table

13th Grade Div 4 Solars–1st on the table 14th Grade Div 1 Lampard–2nd on table 14th Grade Div. 3 Rooney–2nd on table 15th Grade (Metro) Calcio–3rd on table with 2 games in hand

16th Grade (Metro)–2nd on table Girls

12th Grade Falcons–1st on table 14th Grade Europa–3rd on table with a game in hand

17th Grade White Stripes–1st on table Great to see a number of teams performing well in some tough competitions across the grades and let’s hope these teams can bring it home at the end of the season. To highlight a couple of these teams we have included match reports from Corinthians and Solars. Good luck to everyone and hopefully the sun keeps shining through the weekend! Regards

JUNIOR and YOUTH PLAYER DEVELOPMENT

WSAFC Player Pathways Purpose

The Player Pathway documents the pathway at Western Springs AFC for players from 5th Grade to Men’s First Team football and into Auckland Football (AFF) and New Zealand Football (NZF) talent programmes that ultimately lead to the All Whites.

The Whole of Football Plan

Western Springs was one the first clubs to adopt NZ Football’s Whole of Football Plan. It designed to cover all ages and abilities. It has been rolled across the Junior Grades and aims to deliver “Age Appropriate” game formats that ensure each player develops strong technical abilities and a passion for football.

Coerver

Coerver is a third party provider of football academies and Holiday Programmes. Coerver has a real strength in coaching techniques and skills that all players will find useful. Coerver is the most successful third party provider in the world. There are lots of publications available, such as videos and books that are available to compliment the Coerver system. We strongly recommend participation in their programmes to help your player acquire good technique.

WSAFC Coerver Development Programme

The WSAFC Coerver Development Programme is a subsidised Coerver academy run by Western Springs for all A and B team players from 10th–12th grade. It is expected that all players will participate in this valuable programme.

FTC

Federation Talent Centres (FTC) are the elite academies of the AFF. They start at 12th grade and go up to 17th grade. The Club nominates players to trial for the FTC. If selected the players will be asked to attend a special academy run by AFF appointed coaches. You cannot represent Auckland or New Zealand at age group level unless you pathway through an FTC. Prior to nominating player to trial with for the FTC our Football Development Officer may require them to do a talent assessment.

Weir Rose Bowl

Weir Rose Bowl is an inter-federation tournament for elite 12th Grade Boys and Girls from Auckland, Northern and Waikato BOP football federations. AFF teams are chosen from the 12 Grade FTC.

NTC

National Talent Centres (NTC) are the elite academies of the NZF. They start at 12th Grade and go up to 17th Grade. Players are selected from the FTC. If selected the players will be ask to attend camps and a special academy run by NZF appointed coaches. You cannot represent New Zealand at age group level unless you pathway through an NTC.

The Nike Cup

The Nike Cup is actually officially called the Manchester United Premier Cup. It’s sponsored by Nike so it’s commonly called the Nike Cup. It is a global competition for 15th Grade club sides. The tournament is organised in New Zealand by New Zealand football. The top side in NZ will travel to several qualifying other countries to compete. If successful in each of those they would ultimately go to Old Trafford in Manchester for the finals.

WSAFC Senior Pathway Academy

The Director of Football will run an academy for top 16th, 17th and 19th Grade boys that will include them in some first team and reserve team activities.

Napier Tournament

New Zealand Football organises a national tournament for 19th Grade Club sides in Napier each year.

CORINTHIANS 11th GRADE MATCH REPORT

WSFC Corinthians 11th Grade v Three Kings 11/2N Vaz, Saturday 13th July It’s tight at the top of the table so we knew that it was going to be a big game against Three Kings Vaz and we weren’t disappointed! What a nailbiter! We played out at Keith Hay Park, Field 12 which in itself was hard to find so we all felt that we’d had a good warmup by the time we’d got there! Both teams came out with all guns blazing and that pretty much set the tone for the entire game. We had numerous close shots at goal during the first half , unfortunately all either hitting the cross bar, zooming past just shy of the net or being stopped by some excellent goal keeping. Vaz also had their chances to score , however some excellent defensive play and keeping ensured that they were kept scoreless. Needless to say

the all the supporters had their hearts in their mouths the entire time! Second half continued in the same vein with pretty much equal amounts of attack and defence until the last 5 minutes when Lloyd managed to slot a shot past the Vaz goalie to score. Goodness, what relief for all the Corinthian supporters!!!! It was perhaps one of the most exciting games that I have ever watched with both teams playing really well and Corinthians coming out on top was the icing on the cake. Very proud of our boys! They certainly deserved their jetplanes! Mark Aspden Coach

SOLARS 13th GRADE MATCH REPORT

WSFC Solars 13th Grade v Central United Messi Saturday 27th July 2013 at Seddon Fields A hard fought game for the Solars against a 10 man opposition. The Central team has improved immensely, since we beat them 8 – 0 earlier in the season. The first half was mostly one way traffic with the Solars creating many opportunities, but just couldn’t finish them off - although a lot of credit must go to the Central goalkeeper who pulled off many good saves. Central had two break outs in the first half and narrowly missed scoring with a few minutes to go, although goalie Daniel came out to narrow the angle, so did just enough to prevent the goal. The score at half time was 0 – 0. At halftime, the Solars were urged to pass more accurately in the second half, as well as move closer to the ball carrier, while the strikers were encouraged to shoot from close range and move more into clear space. The dogfight continued in the second half, before an accurate pass to Thomas saw him shoot and score from close range. The passing and movement in the second half was much improved, with our outstanding midfielder Leighton often starting the movements and generally controlling the midfield area. Ezra, our energizer bunny, ran and ran all game

and often dispossessed the opposition with accurate tackling, all the while providing a lot of good through balls for our attackers. Jay, Chris and Isaac also made some good passes in the second half from midfield. Central created a lot more play in the second half, which was often snuffed out by Zach as our speedy sweeper or by Jake, Alexander, Dominic, Sam at the back in defense. Central had two good strikers and our defense did very well to limit them to only two shots on goal all game. The Solars continued to pepper the goal in the second half, finally netting with a few minutes to go, with Zach neatly placing his side foot shot into the bottom left hand corner of the goal, giving their keeper no chance. A rare day that striker Bryn didn’t score as he’s found the net a lot this season, including two hatricks. All in all, a fair result for both teams. Jake was awarded with Player of the Day. The Solars have plenty to work on at practice this coming week. Brent Sutcliffe Coach

CLENDON AFC 10th GRADE TOURNAMENT FIREBOLTS REPORT 10th Grade Premier Firebolts attended the Clendon tournament in early July. After sweeping through three rounds of pool play undefeated, and conceding only one goal, we qualified top of our pool. This saw us head into the Championship semi final‌ after a hard fought battle and extra time, the draw was still nil all. Meaning we then had to participate in a sudden death penalty shoot out. This kept everyone biting their nails for a 1/2 hour as we battled goal for goal through the entire team, finally being defeated.

Firebolts went onto win the plate semi final, and finished off with a win in the plate final against East Coast Bays. Another successful day with lots of beautiful football, although unlucky not to play for the championship, the boys all played their hearts out, were great sports and stoked to take home the trophy after such a huge day of football. CLENDON AFC 10th GRADE TOURNAMENT SONICS REPORT The 10th Grade Premier B Sonics had a fantastic day of football at the Clendon AFC 10th Grade tournament on the 7th of July. After a wet to start the season, we had a day in the sun with no umbrellas and raincoats. The team went through their pool games unbeaten finishing equal 1st on points and goal difference. For once, the coach took all the credit for winning the coin toss to put them through as top qualifier in their pool. The next two games saw the team play some attacking and entertaining football only to go down twice in the dying minutes of the second

half in golden goal extra time against Onehunga Sports and Papatoetoe. The boys were very disappointed after giving it all they had, but as a coach you could not ask for more or be prouder of how the team played and represented the club. Matthew Parker Coach

12th GRADE EAGLES MATCH REPORT This year’s WSAFC Eagles team is going through a transition, with many new players and a new coach, who’s philosophy incorporates the AFF whole of football plan. The dominance of Eagles first half defensive partnership of Jasmine Paki and Lucia Birley was evident, nothing was going to get past either of them. Any ball that came near them was quickly cleaned up and fed back into the midfield dynamo of Izzy Searchfield, who was dominating the midfield with strong tackles, and penetrating passing. The two wingers, Amber Paki and Phoebe Mills were exploiting the space left to them by the opposition and running at their opponents at every opportunity. Resulting in many low crosses being delivered into the striker, Joel Kingi, who was unfortunate to not find herself on the score sheet at half time.

Bringing in several changes in the second half, the team started just as strong as they left off. Within minutes of the restart we were two nil up. Not long after the Eagles second, Ellerslie got a goal back. For the rest of the second half, the Eagles continued to attack to snuff out any change of an Ellerslie revival. Alas; we weren’t able to add to our impressive 25 goal season tally. The score finished 2-1. The Eagles well and truly in control of the match. Player of the day was Izzy Searchfield, who was a dominant player throughout the game. Well done!

AMI NELSON SUBURBS TOURNAMENT LOS MERENGUES REPORT WSAFC 12th Grade Los Merengues finish second in Nelson! The boys and families of the 12th Grade team Los Merengues have been fundraising for about eight weeks raising funds to go to the AMI Nelson Suburbs Tournament last week. They would like to wish everyone that bought a sausage at the home games or a raffle ticket, as you helped them raise $4,500 towards their trip. The team travelled down last week and despite arriving on a grey day, the next two days were awesome blue skies and sunshine! After a slow start in the first game against Lower Hutt, came out 3–0 winners. Second up was Nomads from Christchurch where the boys played some great football and won 8–0. The final game in pool play was against F C Nelson and another win 3–1. Top of

Well done to all of the boys and thanks to Tony Bullen for doing an awesome job leading the boys there and to the parents that travelled down to support them. CLUB CAPTAIN’S MESSAGE

Hi everyone, As we are now into the last of winter football, I thought it might be good to reflect on what being part of a club is about... First and foremost it’s about membership and belonging and doing your bit to help the Club function overall. The Club is not a business, so I am occasionally disappointed sometimes to hear rhetoric to that effect. Comments such as “we paid our money so we should get…” are not OK. Truth is most Clubs are there for their members. Our goal is to provide benefits and services to all of our members. Providing a good level of service to members is important to the committees and the management, but it is not a commercial customer/supplier arrangement. Please treat club officials, staff and other members with friendship and courtesy. As a club we have a few rules, which are there to be followed. For example games are to start and finish on time. If your game doesn’t start on time, that doesn’t give you the right to overrun. Last week an important moment of silence was ruined by games on Seddon 3 and 4 overrunning. That’s not acceptable. In another incident an ambulance was unable to access the fields because people had parked in keep clear areas. Again, this is unacceptable. We now have brand new turf pitches. These are valuable resources we must look after, so it saddens me to see people not following the turf rules. These are posted around the grounds and on our website.

These are your pitches, so do what you can to look after them. To the vast majority of members who are courteous and follow the rules for the benefit of all, I thank you sincerely. I’d like to thank the supporters of the 12th Grade Boy’s Premiers’ fundraising. They had an awesome tournament in Nelson and finished in 2nd place. Congratulations to the Women’s Seniors on hosting a thoroughly enjoyable fundraiser at Gina’s Restaurant. I hope your tournament in Tauranga goes well. Men’s First Team games have been amazing. The team is playing well and the atmosphere on the balcony is electric. If you haven’t come down to watch a game yet, you should. You won’t be disappointed. A big thanks to all our club sponsors. Please help us and them by supporting their businesses. Our major sponsors are PBT and Bayleys, who have now supported us for multiple seasons, so if you need to move a parcel or buy/sell a property please give them a call.

Tony Bullen

A sports drink like Powerade can be a key component to maintaining your performance. Check out Powerade’s Hydration Calculator at http://www.powerade.co.nz/hydration to estimate rough fluid requirements for you when playing football, or any other exercise.

CLUB PHYSIO

Hi my name is Justin Lopes and I am the physiotherapist for WSAFC. I have set up a physiotherapy clinic downstairs at the Club that will be open Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturday mornings. Since by now most of us have had an opportunity to play on our great turf, I thought I would focus this week on injuries on turf and the selection of boots to reduce injuries. Studies show the overall risk of acute injuries is similar for both artificial turf and natural grass, although there is a tendency towards more severe ankle injuries on turf (Steffen, 2007; Ekstrand 2011). Therefore, ankle injury prevention strategies such as taping, balance exercises and theraband exercises must be a priority for athletes who play on artificial turf regularly (Williams, 2011). You also need to wear the right type of boots for turf. There are numerous boots to choose from and new models are coming out all the time; but what boots are best suited for turf and how can boot selection minimise injuries? Boots can be divided into the types of studs they have on their sole (moulded studs, cleats or blades and studs) but there is now a wide variety of hybrid designs that incorporate a mix of all of the different types, along with a choice of leather or synthetic uppers. Generally speaking moulded studs are best for hard ground, studs are best for soft ground and cleats or blades were designed to be able to be used all year round. The difference between playing on turf compared to grass is that the grass has more give, and studs or cleats may become stuck more easily in the turf. A common mechanism for knee and ankle injuries is when the cleats get caught in the turf and the body twists while the foot stays still. Justin Chong from Bigfoot Podiatry came to talk to the club members recently on youth injuries in football, blister prevention and treatment, and boot selection. He recommended selecting moulded studs or the new, triangulartype studs for turf, and not using blades or

cleats as these are more likely to get stuck and cause injuries. Although there are ‘turf’ shoes with lots of smaller studs these may not suit Western Springs AFC’s turf as the plastic turf is relatively long and you may be unable to get a good grip.

TX Sole Other recommendations were: • To buy boots that are comfortable and that fit properly. • To use heel wedges in your boots if you suffer from Severs disease (pain in the adolescent heel) or Achilles pain. • Have wet weather grass studs for playing in mud (i.e. away from home!) A good boot should flex at the forefoot only, and have some rotation through the sole, it not be able to be flexed or bend in the middle of the boot. If you have any foot, ankle or lower limb injuries come down and see me at the club’s clinic and, if appropriate, I can refer you to Justin Chong to have a chat about

Meet the Western Springs Diamond Geezers. WINNERS of the AFF Men’s Championship. Diamond Geezers began at Western Springs in 2000. We’ve come up seven levels, winning six leagues along the way. This is our 3rd season in the Championship after winning Division 1 undefeated in 2010. The Championship has been a huge step up in class and skill level from Div 1. After a tough couple of seasons, a few new recruits and

Toga night review

Monday the 29th of July, 30 Toga-clad party-goers congregated at the fabulous Gina’s Italian Kitchen in Symonds Street for a night of murder mystery “Terror in a Toga”. The setting was a pre-game gathering, hosted by the Lanista Felix Festus, who had his very pregnant looking wife by his side... but is this his child that she carries? As the night progressed, more and more scandals were uncovered... stories of bribery, corruption, jealousy and betrayal. A fantastic night ensued, including a “murder”, and it seemed everyone had a motive for the killing. It was only at the very end that the true murderer was revealed. An enjoyable night had by all, and made a good dent in the Ladies Reserves teams fees. Thank you to all who came and participated! Becs Stitt, captain of the Ladies Reserves.

WSAFC MAJOR SPONSORS

It is with great pleasure that I can announce that once again The PBT Group have committed to sponsoring WSAFC for the 2013 season. We have now been involved with the club for the past 6 years and it has been a privilege to watch the club grow and develop into a club that I am sure other clubs can only dream about. I do not believe the club would be as successful as it is today without the strong leadership and vision the club has shown. We at PBT also share a vision and goal to be a leader in the freight industry and to simply be the best. With this in mind we wish all teams, both Juniors and Seniors, a fantastic season for 2013 and know you will enjoy playing on the 2 new astro turf fields come rain, hail or shine. To Neil Emblem and the WSAFC first team all the best for the season it is great to see a coach of Neil’s experience join the club, I am sure many players will benefit from his coaching and playing expertise.

All the best everyone for the 2013 season. Peter Baker, The PBT Group CEO.

We are very pleased to announce that Bayleys Real Estate Maritime Square are back on board as a Major Sponsor for the club for the 2013 season. Their very generous contribution to the club is reflected in branding and signage for the Men and Ladies First Team. Bayleys are pleased to be able to offer all WSAFC members an opportunity to support their local club by way of a $1,500 donation for every property which is listed exclusively and sold by Bayleys Real Estate Maritime Square. If you’re thinking that this might be the time to sell, let’s make a time to discuss the possibilities. Call Rachel Dovey on 309 6020.
