NOTICEBOARD It’s Olympics time! You can’t help but feel a sense of pride watching the Olympics, and especially for the New Zealanders competing in Rio. For me, it doesn’t matter what sport or who is competing, I love it. I hope you all have followed our Football Ferns, they have again given all of us a reason to celebrate success, on this the greatest of world stages. Disappointed undoubtedly at missing out on the quarterfinals, the Football Ferns have proven why New Zealand is a growing force in women’s football. At home our football season is drawing to a close, and I wanted to give a special mention and thanks to all those coaches who have been out there in
the wind and the rain over the last month. Our club survives on volunteers and over the last month, you’ve proven how lucky we are to have you. It doesn’t matter if you’re the coach of the 6th Grade Cougars or the 17th Grade Black Swans, respect to all our coaches, you are doing such a fantastic job in developing our future Olympians. Now keep an eye out for information on summer football and for those aspiring for greatness, get yourself involved in the Coerver football skills programmes that run at Springs.

TH
Safety with shooting There have been a number of quite serious injuries as a result of innocent parents/children being struck by a ball in the head because they were walking or standing behind a goal where players were firing shots at the goal. Please remind all players to check behind the goals before they shoot. This applies most importantly to the main entrance gate between the dugouts on field 1. For this gate it is recommended that there is no shooting at any goal at this location. Finish on time Friendly reminder too that your games must finish on time. “The team before us ran over” is not a reason for you to go over time. Thank you for your cooperation.

numerous times with things not quite going our way. Seeing Brazil play with their fancy footwork, touch and accuracy was amazing, and gave us all standards for the level we want to reach. Overall, exploring Brazil was unreal and the competition is something we will always remember fondly! We thank the Evergreens Club and committee so much for your help in getting us there!”
Team Name Background
Team Rituals and Traditions
The Fatboys – so named during a moment of inspiration on the Heaphy track by a couple of founding team members back in 1997. Started out as kind of ironic, but not so much these days. It took a few years for the authorities to call us by our name but now it sits loud and proud in the AFA scheduling.
We have a number of team rituals and traditions that have developed over the years, such as:
Competition you are currently playing in Over 35s div one, but only because we haven’t got around to moving to the over 40s yet. We’ve finished second in a couple of open grade divisions over the years but no major silverware (plenty of time yet though!). Perhaps our highest honour… when officiating the boat races at our team xmas bash one year Bernie, the legendary Auckland referee, said we had the best team spirit he had ever come across. Of course, Bernie being Bernie, he was probably confusing us with some other team, but hey given the state of our trophy cabinet we’ll take it!
When were you founded and your team origins 1997 was our first season, a bunch of ex uni hostel mates and other hanger oners. 20 years later and we’re still going strong (sort of). We started out at the University club, moved after three seasons to Three Kings, where we were until 2012, and now we are in our 4th season at Springs.
Biggest Rivals We’ve had a few over the years, stretching right back to the bone breaking Te Atatu team in the late 90s, the Mt Albert Ponsonby team during our halcyon days in AFA division 1 and more recently probably the Steamboats, who we always liked to beat (but didn’t very often, even though we finished higher than them in the league). More recently our two main rivals are old age and injury – probably our most challenging opponents to date. They seem to get the better of us most weeks.
Providing a bottle of port on your birthday for a pre-game toast. Players have been known to replace the port with, more stimulating substances like Absinthe. This has ended in some interesting results both physical and performance based. An annual awards ceremony, with the most shunned award being ‘The Shandy Galloway’. Originally named ‘The Shandy’ for team members displaying shandy type behaviour on or off the field, which was renamed ‘The Shandy Galloway’ after a particular team member made this award their own for a number of years. Each years winner is required to wear the ‘Shandy’ shirt for the summer football season.
Magic Moments Our Annual Xmas parties which in the early days, tended to get a little out of hand as each years organisers tried to better the previous years event. Noteworthy incidents have included Bernie (the infamous referee) being invited to dish out penalties for non-compliance with party rules. We are sure he issued himself penalties throughout the day as he required a taxi later in the afternoon. The need to call for an ambulance just to check on the health of a couple of team members. The loss of teeth related to the giant blow up boxing and jousting events. These events have become more sedate and family orientated in recent years. However they have not lost some of the traditions, such as the annual boat race etc. Annual team and family summer camping trips to Pauanui pre Xmas and Tawharanui pre-Season. Every two years the team and their families undertake a trip overseas. The past two trips have been to Vanuatu and Samoa, with next years planned for Fiji or Bali. www.wsafc.org.nz August 2016 9

The final brought a re-match against Cashmere Technical who had triumphed over Eastern Suburbs. It was a close first half with chances at a premium. What energy did the boys have left in their tanks? The Bullets started the half as they finished the game - camped in the opposition half. But through some great blocks and goalkeeping the scores remained level heading into the final minutes. Another cross was cleared...shot blocked...then GOAL!!!! Flynn had glanced a cross into the corner of the net and the celebrations began...leaving no time for a kick off. The Bullets began their celebrations while Tracy booked another seat on the plane for the silverware that was heading back to Springs!!

The 12th grade Bullets travelled to Nelson for their first overseas tournament, hot on the heels following their tournament win at Fencibles. With 3 boys unable to travel and another picking a fight with the wrong stairs it was going to challenge the strength of the squad. With this in mind, our manager, Tracy, decided the boys needed somewhere special to recover in between games and duly booked a caravan - will they ever go back to a gazebo!! On a sticky pitch, day 1 started with a hard fought 1-0 victory over Christchurch’s Cashmere Technical courtesy of a superb finish from Cam. Game 2 v Nelson Suburbs brought 2 more goals for Cam including a beauty of a free kick. The day’s final group game brought another clean sheet for Joe Wallis and his awesome defence, with Miles grabbing the decisive goal for a 1-0 win.
disappointed at the lack of salmon on the menu, he soon put it behind him. In the semi final the Bullets were pitted against Waterside Karori from Wellington, who had finished the first day unbeaten. Ten minutes in and Miles rocketed a strike into the top corner - what a start! Shortly after half time, Waterside equalised but the Bullets replied almost instant with Cam chipping the GK after a mazy run. The boys continued to control the game but with a third goal not coming the game was on a knife edge until the whistle brought cheers from the caffeine/fuelled parents! With the final to come later in the day, Andy sent the boys to their rooms to relax (while some stayed in the caravan)!

Last year we formed the Evergreens Club to support people in our Football Community who needed a little help in some way. We need some money in the bank if we are going to support others, so the Evergreens have been working to raise funds. So far, activities have included: • The Evergreens Over 40’s tournament in September (and again this year) • Two Quiz nights a number of raffles and fundraisers around the club.
Support of Dayna Manak and Jess Verdon Two members of our Women’s Premier Team, Jess and Dayna were selected for the NZ Universities Futsal Team, and with a tight timeframe, asked if we could give a little bit of support, which the Evergreens did, for their travel to Brazil.
This year our support so far has gone to: Support of Ayub and Masud Sayid. Brothers Ayub and Nasud had spent a few years watching junior players from the sidelines and wanting to be able to play for the club, so with the assistance of one of our Junior parents the Evergreens helped arrange their placement in teams, and provided a package of fees and a Lotto WSAFC playing kit.
And, our next project is quite exciting. We want to provide the base funding for a Junior team from the club to go to an overseas tournament, possibly the Kanga Cup in Australia, to give young players a team event to aspire to.
Support of Myer Bevan. After winning the NZ leg of the ‘Nike most wanted’ event, Myer was selected along with 11 other boys to join the Nike Academy in England. Myer has grown up as a WSAFC junior player, and while the opportunity is there to maybe get a professional contract, we wanted to provide some support as a tangible way of showing the club supports his hard work.

Geoff Brogan
WORLD UNIVERSITY FUTSAL CHAMPIONSHIPS, BRAZIL, JULY 2016 WS Snr Womens team members Jess Verdon and Dayna Manak were featured as recipients of Evergreens club support., in recent newsletter, selected for NZ Univ Futsal Team. “It was an amazing trip and getting to play against some of the best futsal players in the world was a priceless experience. Being a part of something so big worldwide and also helping futsal grow in New Zealand was awesome. Coming 8th, we believe we could have done better overall, but were unlucky 8 August 2016 www.wsafc.org.nz
numerous times with things not quite going our way.
TEAM PROFILE

Recovery included a trip to a local eatery and some more team bonding before a good night’s sleep. The boys were up early waiting in their heated marquee tent for their dedicated parents to make breakfast and share a few jokes. Although Mattie Cunnington was most
disappointed at the lack of salmon on the menu, he soon put it behind him.

14 August 2016 www.wsafc.org.nz
