EXECUTIVE CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE All over bar the shouting... Hello once more. Most of the Club will have completed their season with just a small number of us still to line up this Friday or Saturday. Much of the Junior Club internal competition will continue through September given the late start with the laying of our own “field of dreams”. Congratulations to every one of you who put on a green and white shirt this year and those who coached, managed, transported or supported the Club and players this year. Special mention to the First Team who are back in division one after a 16 year absence. A great achievement and what a great draw card for the Club with the late Saturday kick offs. Next year we will be rolling out our new playing kit with Springs shorts, socks and a new top. As a Club we want to be proud and the kit should come up to the fields and facilities. The fields themselves deserve special mention. What a fantastic facility to have. The Club and players can only get better with playing on this surface. Less cancellations and more teams playing at Seddon. With Friday night football and the 5pm and possibly 7:15 kick off on a Saturday there will be plenty of football to enjoy watching or playing in 2014.
It is up to the individual members of this Club to ensure the fields are kept in top condition. This means respecting the rules outlined at each of the entrances. It may also mean pointing these restrictions out to visiting teams or spectators. Just a friendly conversation should be enough. If this turns out to be not so, just come and find a Club committee member who will assist. Football is about a lot of things; it is about being part of something, be it team or club. It is about getting outside and exercising with your team mates, it’s about competing. For some of us it’s about winning, for others it’s about participating. But for all of us it’s got to be fun and we can all be passionate about the game. Have a great Summer and look forward to seeing you next season. Regards
Martin Bell
SENIOR CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE SPRINGTIME IS HERE It seems rather fitting that springtime has arrived, but for the Club, it has arrived early with the Men’s First Team winning the NRFL Mens Division 2—as Champions! After many years of trying, the Springs Men’s First Team is finally moving up in the world. Special thanks go to the fantastic efforts of Neil, all his coaching staff and of course, the Men’s First Team squad—a great season—long performance, with an even better outcome! I think a special mention also belongs to the other three Senior League winning sides: Championship Division - Diamond Geezers Men’s Division 10 - Screaming Eagles Over 40’s Division 2 - Kosmos Earlier in the season I showed a chart of teams currently in the top positions in their league. Now that most leagues have finished, here is how that table finished up in the standard leagues: TEAM NAME

EARLY POSITION
All in all, despite the hard start with the pitches, it has turned out to be a stellar season for Springs; with new grounds, new facilities and now new challenges ahead for all the teams and committees. The focus going forward is for the Club to build on what we have and turn this into a great community—a place where the whole family wants to come and play, watch the games, eat and drink and socialise—roll on the summer season!

MEN’S FIRST TEAM TOP OF THE TABLE
MEN’S RESERVES TOP OF THE TABLE It’s been a great season down at the Senior Mens Reserves and we are nearing the end of another successful season. Just before the season round up, we would like to thank a few people... Justin ‘JLo’ Lopes for his physio work on the squad, Jacko Winters for his management and team sheet writing, Graham for his lollies and bananas we all stole from the First Team squads coffers, Paul for his great laundry work and last but not least Neil Emblen, for assembling a real great bunch of lads! Neil takes a genuine interest in every player, from obviously the First Team squad, but also the Reserves, U19’s and the AFF squad and is always looking out for the best interest of every player. He has done a great job in managing all the squads in 2013. Congratulations to Neil and the First Team Squad for their great success in 2013. It is great the Club can now compete at the higher lever, and may it not stop here! But also to progress to the top of the Auckland pile! As the Reserves follow the First Team Squad, it is great the Reserves now get to compete in Division One next season after probably deserving to play there in seasons past when we have won titles. Season 2013 Senior Mens Reserves Round Up. Well done to the season team captain Matty Wildman and all the Senior Mens Reserves Squad, for the winning of the 2013 title! After the disappointment of losing the 2012 season title in the crucial last game of the season against North Shore, the great news is that we have secured our title back with three rounds still remaining. With three titles in four years the Club obviously has some depth with the ongoing success of the Senior Reserves, helped due to the great calibre of players assembled by the allurement of being coached by Neil Emblen. With a great 120 goals in the bank in the league and the Chatham Cup Reserves Bowl Knockout Cup, we averaged over 5 goals per game. Our goal of hitting a 100 goal difference in the league took a bit of a set back after taking our foot off the pedal once the title was won. With a great winning streak of 14 games with no draws this season, we definitely learned how to win, win well, and also win ugly in the semi final of the cup away in Hamilton. We did well taking it to the opposition in the first halves and putting the game
away early, however often then relaxing a bit more after the half time break, to not make the scoreline a little more flattering. The team’s success can usually get attributed to some great attacking, especially with over 100 goals in the bank, however many games we won this year started from the back. The consistent back four led consistently by Adrian Morris, really set a strong platform for the stacked midfield to command ownership of games. Which then translated into a lot of goals from many players in every position. And with a mixture of youth and experience, a good recipe for season success. Highlights for the season: Game of the season was the 4-3 winning comeback against Forest Hill Milford in Round One of the Knockout Cup.
The chance to take home the quality player of the day trophy sharing our shed. A Reserves game record (TBC) 20-nil drubbing of Manukau including 5 for Ian Sellar in the first half before he was subbed for being greedy! Our biggest game of the season is on September 14 with the Cup Final and the chance of another piece of silverware for the Club. So the season still has a lot to play for! So get down to the Club for the final! We need your support. Thanks to the WSAFC Club and to the management for another great season. And a great pitch! Much appreciated!

SENIOR LEAGUE TOP OF THE TABLE Meet the Western Springs Diamond Geezers. WINNERS of the AFF Men’s Championship. Diamond Geezers began at Western Springs in 2000. We’ve come up seven levels, winning six leagues along the way. This is our 3rd season in the Championship after winning Division 1 undefeated in 2010. The Championship has been a huge step up in class and skill level from Div 1. After a tough couple of seasons, a few new recruits and
A proud day for the Diamond Geezers. A great night at the club followed by not so great hangovers
change in tactics, the Geezers got back to our old title winning form. The only player remaining from the 2000 team - Mike Chalberg - scored a hat-trick to secure the title on Saturday. Congrats guys, great story!

JUNIOR/YOUTH COMMITTEE MESSAGE Hi All Youth and Junior Members… This month we celebrate those Western Springs teams that have won their Divisions or who have come extremely close. There are always challenges in achieving this due to new teams coming together or injuries sustained through the season, often a strong team is based around a good overall work ethic and all the members working hard for each other…. well done. The winners and runners up of the Divisions that we would like to recognize are:
Boys: Winners 11th Grade Div. 2 Corinthians 11th Grade Div. 4 Bristol 12th Grade Div. 4 Baros Second Place 11th Grade Div. 4 Everton 13th Grade Div.4 Solars 14th Grade Div.1 Lampard 15th Grade Metro Calcio (still to be finalized) 16th Grade Metro Girls: Winners 12th Grade 13th Grade 14th Grade 17th Grade
Div. 2 Falcons Div.1 Avatars Div.2 Europa Div.1 White Stripes
With the season coming to an end for most teams, it is always important to recognize those people that have made the season possible, this includes, coaches, managers, parents, grandparents and all the family support. From a Club perspective, thanks must go to Coordinators and Committee Members who all volunteer their time to make this Club so successful. As we have said all season, the Club is in a great position at the moment with fantastic facilities and an increased focus on providing a great offering for all members. We are expecting a great season in 2014 with your support…
Thank you and we will see you all at Prizegiving! Junior/Youth Committee PS…please ensure you return all gear back to the Club, Paul (Club Manager) should be there most weekends during September in the morning, as there is a significant cost tied up in gear and we need it for next season.

AVATARS 13th GRADE GIRLS DIVISION 1 CHAMPIONS The Avatars have had a great season, designating this a “development year” with a strong emphasis on basic player skills and system of play, but none-the-less being very successful in terms of results. Girls 13th is played on half fields with small goals and comparatively big goalies, and is vulnerable to negative play with many teams prepared to defend back in numbers for almost entire games. But our mantra has been to play good football even at the risk of losing games. We have aspired to play a possession based short triangle passing game, encouraging player flair, game intelligence and player adaptability. Happily in the grading round, we dominated all teams for large periods of our games, although finding the back of the net proved difficult against our better rivals. The grading round finished with a hard fought win over Hibiscus Coast leaving us top of the table. Then tragedy struck with our star goalie Maya Paddy, who was already making a strong claim for season MVP, sustaining a season ending injury. We were devastated for Maya, and this also left us the whole competition round sharing out playing in goal. If anything this galvanised the team, sharpening our defence but still endeavouring to unleash our wingbacks on overlap runs forward. The team was unbowed by defeat early in the competition round, but any aspirations to win the league looked lost.
But in the end, the emphasis on development shone through with us finishing out the season playing an expansive and entertaining brand of football, with four impressive final wins including against our great rival and good friends at Eastern Suburbs. Happily results in other games went our way, and the championship was ours— definitely a thrill—not just in the victory, but also in the very positive acclaim from our rivals. The team owes a great debt over years to behind the scenes mentoring from Matt Munford, and we unashamedly do everything “Munford style”. The Club, in my opinion is fortunate to have not only a great wealth of coaching knowledge, but also a culture of nurturing coaches of all backgrounds through easily accessible advice and support. Thanks also to Tony Bullen, Geoff Cooper, Geoff Brogan, and last but not least Neil Emblen, in this respect. To my girls, well done and you deserved your success. It’s been a memorable season with passion and not without controversy—but as I’m learning, that’s football! Our team: Maya Paddy, Lucy Hackett, Nova Peterson, Milly Heimsath, Katie Robertson, Nina Foley, Jess Lamont, Emma Fletcher, Tayla O’Brien, Becky Gillespie, Milly McWhirter, and Faye Busfield.

PANTHERS 15th GRADE DIV 2 MATCH REPORT A soggy end to the season but we held Metro G15/2 to a nil all draw for our first and last game at Seddon. It was an excellent game to watch and the girls played their best football of the season. Roughly half the girls in this team have played together for years, and the others were new to the team back in April. The new ones were welcomed and integrated into the team rapidly and bonds were cemented on a road trip down to Whiritoa, where Dennis has a bach, in late June. It poured the whole time we were there, so no football, but the girls were very happy to spend time together. I really enjoyed being their manager. Their sportsmanship was unfailing and they made sure they had a lot of fun.
Here’s what their coach has to say about them: “I love the way they don’t get bogged down with results and just enjoy playing. Without the pressure of needing to win they tried things people normally wouldn’t. Making a mistake is not a bad thing within the group – they totally embraced that –and that makes them quite unique as a group of players.”

VESPAS 11th GRADE FINALISTS PLATE Finally we got to participate in the Fencibles Tournament after two weeks of cancellations. Due to Father’s Day, the Vespas were in need of players. Many thanks to Caleb McLeod (12th Premier Los Merengues), and Jack Duffy, Dillon Houching and Bradley Wilson (11th Premier Cruzeiro) for stepping in. A beautiful sunny day, breezy and cold, the boys arrived at Greenmount Reserve not knowing each other. Introductions were made, names learnt at pace and the tournament was underway. Our first round game was against a very passionate East Coast Bays. There was a bit of feeling in this game. ECB is Dillon Houching’s old club, and it was obvious they weren’t happy he had left. A hard fought 1-0 victory, with a superb strike from Caleb McLeod, set the Vespas on their way. Up next was the highly fancied Eastern Suburbs premier team Tremlett. Some players were rested at this point, with the aim of progressing through to the Plate Championship. The cunning plan worked – we lost 4-0! We faced Bucklands Beach premier team next. This team came 2nd in the Premiership, so we knew we were in for another tough one. We threw the kitchen sink at this game and narrowly lost 1-0. Plate round here we come! Knock Out Plate Championship We were in the Quarter Finals up against the Waitakere 2nd Team. The Vespas came out and played some great football, and the Waitakere goalkeeper helped to keep us in the game. There were a lot of shots on goal, and
thankfully two found the back of the net. The Vespas were off to the Semi Finals! The Semi Final was a different proposition. We were up against the Waitakere premier team and this was one tough match. They’re Jack Shiret’s old club, and it was a fitting occasion when he slotted home the winning goal. 6 minutes to go we shut down the match, moved another player into defence and tried to play at the other end of the pitch. At this stage everyone was looking at their watches and wishing the ref would blow full time. Our cunning plan worked and we were in the final. Our opposition was the old foe, Eastern Suburbs Tremlett who finished 4th in the Premier Division. We’d lost to them in the second round, but had rested some boys, so thought we might now stand a good chance of winning the trophy. The boys played well - a good passing game, keeping hold of possession, but unfortunately Tremlett were just too strong for us on the day, and we lost the final 2-0. The boys had a great day and were well pleased with their runners up medals. Not bad for a team that got together on the day The mix of players worked well and by the end of the day everybody knew everyone’s name – it’s a beautiful game

CLUB PHYSIO
Hi my name is Justin Lopes and I am the physiotherapist for WSAFC. I have set up a physiotherapy clinic downstairs at the Club that will be open Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturday mornings. Congratulations to all the teams in the Club that have completed their season; hopefully you were at the top of your table at the final whistle. Fit teams win leagues and they also have fewer injuries. Making sure you stay fit over summer and come back into the 2014 season ready for preseason training will prevent muscle strains in the New Year. Summer football is a great way to keep your touch and maintain some base fitness, but if you are only playing once a week it is not enough. Get out for a run or do some interval training to maintain your cardiovascular fitness. I guarantee you will perform better for your 7-a-side team too! Hamstring injuries are one of the most common footballing injuries and the average time a player is out after a hamstring strain is 22 days. The biggest predictor of getting an injury is previously having had that injury and around 60% of players who have sustained a hamstring injury will strain their hamstrings again. The good news is that there is strong research indicating that hamstring injuries can be prevented by doing eccentric hamstring exercises. Eccentric loading of a muscle happens when the muscle is lengthened under load. The best exercises for the hamstring are Bridging, Single Leg Russian Deadlifts and Nordic Hamstrings; all of which can be done using only body weight. A simple programme of ‘nordic’ eccentric exercises as outlined below will reduce your chance of sustaining a hamstring injury. Make sure you only do these exercises when you have done a full warm up and don’t do them if you have a hamstring injury unless you have discussed it with your physiotherapist.
Nordic Hamstrings
•Kneel on the ground with your feet hooked under a stable platform or being held by a partner at your ankles •Keeping your back straight and core activated, lower yourself towards the floor using your hamstrings until your hamstrings can’t hold you any longer then fall to the floor •Immediately push yourself back up to the starting position using your hands, keeping your back straight Week Sessions/week 1 1 2 2 3 3 4 3 5-10 3 10 onwards 1
Sets and Repetitions 2 x 5 reps 2 x 6 reps 3 x 6-8 reps 3 x 8-10 reps 3 sets of 12-10-8 reps 3 sets of 12-10-8 reps
Expect your hamstrings to be a little sore when you start the programme—it means they will get stronger, but the pain should settle after a day or too.
CLUB PHYSIO
I will be at the Club over Summer looking after the 7-a-side teams. Remember that it is free for club members for ACC covered treatments. Just text me (021673732) and I will catch up with you as soon as I can. I will be at the Club on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings, and Ruth Fletcher will be looking after the Monday and Wednesday nights at the Club during the 7-a-side tournament.

The Western Springs AFC Over 40’s Tournament is proudly sponsored by Hawkes Bay Independent Breweries and Invivo Wines. The tournament will follow its traditional roots of being based on hospitality, with bar tabs for all teams, meals for all players and live entertainment. However, 2013 will see a new level of excitement with the recent completion of two artificial pitches, so should make for some awesome football. Of course, this will require players and supporters to be familiar with the new turf rules to ensure there are no issues on the day.

WSAFC MAJOR SPONSORS
It is with great pleasure that I can announce that once again The PBT Group have committed to sponsoring WSAFC for the 2013 season. We have now been involved with the club for the past 6 years and it has been a privilege to watch the club grow and develop into a club that I am sure other clubs can only dream about. I do not believe the club would be as successful as it is today without the strong leadership and vision the club has shown. We at PBT also share a vision and goal to be a leader in the freight industry and to simply be the best. With this in mind we wish all teams, both Juniors and Seniors, a fantastic season for 2013 and know you will enjoy playing on the 2 new astro turf fields come rain, hail or shine. To Neil Emblem and the WSAFC first team all the best for the season it is great to see a coach of Neil’s experience join the club, I am sure many players will benefit from his coaching and playing expertise.
All the best everyone for the 2013 season. Peter Baker, The PBT Group CEO.
We are very pleased to announce that Bayleys Real Estate Maritime Square are back on board as a Major Sponsor for the club for the 2013 season. Their very generous contribution to the club is reflected in branding and signage for the Men and Ladies First Team. Bayleys are pleased to be able to offer all WSAFC members an opportunity to support their local club by way of a $1,500 donation for every property which is listed exclusively and sold by Bayleys Real Estate Maritime Square. If you’re thinking that this might be the time to sell, let’s make a time to discuss the possibilities. Call Rachel Dovey on 309 6020.
