CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE A NE W SE AS ON UN FO LD S.. . The new 2015 season is fast approaching, with the Men’s First Team kicking off their new NRFL Premiership season at home against Birkenhead on 28th March. The Women’s First Team start their opening NRFL Womens Premier game at home the very next day, against Fencibles. (Check the website for the season fixtures and times and come down and support our top teams). The senior teams kick off their season on 11th April, with the Junior and Youth teams starting late this year – in the first weekend of May. The Junior Committee has organised a club Open Day on Saturday 18th April for our younger grades, where there will be a Boot Swap. The idea will be to bring a pair of boots that no longer fit you

and look for a bigger pair, or just donate your old boots. All the boots left over, will go to clubs that need them (check the website and ad on page 21 for more details). Come on down to the Open Day to have a go at the skills and game areas in partnership with our sponsors and AFF. This is all about introducing football to our younger members. Also please ensure you attend the right coaches and managers meeting to understand the requirements for the season. Your coordinator will be letting you know the confirmed dates.

the competition back again next year, with even more international teams (this year New Caledonia entered). The Western Springs U17 girls took out the Bowl in their competition and the boys lost in the quarter finals – so good to see the home sides playing so well.

The club has just hosted another very successful Auckland City FC U17 Tournament (weekend of 20th – 22nd March) with Birkenhead winning a dramatic penalty shoot-out against Onehunga Sports (tied 0–0 after extra time). We look forward to seeing

We look forward to seeing you all down at the club for another great season of football and wish all our teams the very best for the year.

FEDERATION TALENT CENTRE IN JANUARY AND FEBRUARY, MANY WESTERN SPRINGS PLAYERS TRIALLED FOR AUCKLAND FOOTBALL’S FEDERATION TALENT CENTRE. The Federation Talent Centre, or FTC, works with players born between 1999 and 2003. The programme is fully aligned with New Zealand Football’s player development framework and provides pathways for Auckland-based players to reach Football Ferns or All Whites levels. The FTC trials were a well-organised and rigorous process; all players having to attend two separate trials. Springs boys and girls were extremely successful in the trails. In the 2003 boys section, for example, 14 of the 49 outfield players selected are from Springs, an impressive percentage when you consider that FTC is open to all clubs in the Auckland federation. The club has achieved similar success in all other year groups too. Our success will come as no surprise to those who have watched the talent on display at the club; it is a result of the great job Neil does through his Academy and testament also to the

many talented and dedicated coaches we have at the club. So what can our players expect now that they are part of FTC? The programme gives our players the opportunity to play and train regularly with other top players in Auckland, under the guidance of well-qualified coaches. Players train twice a week (at Papakura Army Base – a real test of players’ and parents’ commitment, if one were needed!) and follow the FTC’s well-defined Player Habits and Expectations guidelines, which ensure that the players’ technical, mental and decision-making skills are being honed. While a premium is placed on providing players with enjoyable, specific and progressive training, players are given the opportunity to put their training into practice with a number of game days against other federations. A second round of trials will take place later in the year, giving those

players who missed out another opportunity to impress, and ensuring that those already selected continue to strive for improvements. Players need little motivation to impress their coaches, however, as they aim to take the next step in the ladder, which is selection to the National Talent Centre. It would be amazing to see some Western Springs players take the additional step into New Zealand Football’s Talent Excel, for those gifted players already identified as potential National representatives, and Talent Perform pathways, which can open up a number of opportunities to players, including US college scholarships. The club’s representation at the Football Talent Centre demonstrates how well the club is developing its talent. We know that the boys and girls will do us proud.

ACHILLES INJURIES IN SENIOR PLAYERS During preseason training when the grounds are traditionally harder than in August, and players are returning to training after a Christmas break, we tend to see more Achilles problems in our senior teams. Tendons join muscle to bone and the Achilles tendon joins the calf muscles (gastrocnemius and soleus) into the back of the calcaneus or heel bone. When the tendon is overloaded due to an increase in running, poor running technique/ biomechanics, or poor footwear the result is that the tendon becomes swollen, painful, and can be stiff in the morning. Occasionally, this can follow an acute event such as jumping, however, it is often a gradual process where the tendon is (over) loaded and cannot adapt to the load quickly enough. Treatment for Achilles tendon injuries can include unloading the calf and Achilles tendon by reducing weight-bearing activities and using tape or heel raises, wearing supportive footwear that have a heel pitch and appropriate support for the type of foot, using ice for pain relief, and progressing 12 April 2015 www.wsafc.org.nz

through a period of unloading and then to a graduated exercise programme before a return to sport drills. Exercises that can help the tendon may be isometric (where the muscle stays the same length) such as standing on your toes. Weight may be increased after a few days if the tendon is feeling better. Eccentric exercises for the Achilles can be done by standing on a step and going up onto your toes and then slowly coming down until your heels are below the step. Being consistent with the gradual loading can have a positive effect on the tendon, however the process is slow. A good indicator of progress is how the tendon feels the day after loading the tendon. If the stiffness is improving, and the tendon is becoming less painful then you are on the right track!

If you would like to discuss a programme for your Achilles injury or any other injuries please contact us on the details below. Katie will be away until May with the NZ Ice Fernz team at their World Cup and I will be away with Auckland City at the O’League finals in April. WESTERN SPRINGS BOYS HAD ASSEMBLED A GREAT TEAM TO CONTEST THIS YEAR’S AUCKLAND CITY TOURNAMENT, WITH THE ADDITION OF TOP PLAYERS DANE SCHNELL, FRANK CLARK AND DYLAN MORRIS BOOSTING AN ALREADY IMPRESSIVE SQUAD. With so much football on offer to these boys, with school and club commitments, the theme of the tournament was to play with no fear and no pressure. It’s tournament football; what will be, will be. First up, on what was the worst pitch at the tournament, the team got off to a flyer – three nil at halftime. Glenfield Rovers had no idea what had hit them. Well taken goals to Dylan Morris, Frankie Busfield and Dane Schnell and it was the perfect start. Next up was Coastal Spirit who were last season’s surprise package. Springs almost scored the quickest and the best goal of the tournament when from the kick off, right back Peter Hunt hit a great diagonal ball for Will Wallis, who hit a dipping volley from outside the area, only for the Coastal keeper to pull out a top drawer save. 16 April 2015 www.wsafc.org.nz

It was the sign of things to come and Springs didn’t wait long until the impressive Shaun Bennett put us in front. This set the tone – Dylan Morris bagged another, Will Wallis also got his reward, and skipper Frankie Busfield met a well taken corner, but the best was to come when Jamie Birch put one in the top corner from outside the area. Five-nil at half time, job done. Last match of the day was on number 1 in front of a good vocal crowd. This pitch suits our game best and the boys played the most attractive game of the day. Plenty of movement, and Bay Olympic struggling to keep pace. Dylan Morris robbed the right back and smashed one home, then Jayden Rollinson put his name in the hat for goal of the tournament, weaving his way through his old teammates to score a peach.

The lively Bay Olympic front man got the best of Frankie Busfield, who dragged him down in the box. Goalkeeper Elliot Munford came up with a great save much to the delight of the local crowd. Time for Trujon Nomani Brown to put the icing on the cake and another three-nil result. Day one ends. Played three, won three. For 11, against 0. What a start! Day two begins against last year’s champions Ellerslie, which was to prove our toughest test yet. This was a good side and they pressed us all over the park. Springs went ahead early on, only for the defence to be finally breeched and all tied up at halftime. It seemed like this one would end in a stalemate until, in the dying seconds, Will Wallis found space in the box and somehow his shot beat the keeper. Another victory. Top of the group with one to play.

By all reports, Napier were a good side and they also were unbeaten. With both teams already qualified for the quarter finals this was simply to decide who would win the group – a draw was good enough for us. A bad offside call, resulting in Springs falling behind, hit us hard and we could not come back from this setback. This loss meant we played old foes Onehunga Sports, whose teams know how to win tournaments. Their Nike Cup dominance proves that. It was back on the turf which again suited us, but this team was strong

with five current U17 NZ players in the squad. Springs started well and looked the better side but were struck a cruel blow when a deflected shot took the ball past a stranded Munford. This was the cue for Onehunga to use all their wisdom to win a game of football. It was a true arm wrestle with the power shifting back and forth. With one last throw of the dice we went to three up front and three at the back. It almost paid off but from the counter attack Sports grabbed a second and Springs were gone.

It was a pleasure to be part of this set up. The players attitude to every aspect of this tournament was fantastic and a credit to the club. Special mention to team captain, Frankie Busfield, who played every minute of every game and gave his absolute all for the cause. Thanks guys. Enjoy your season ahead.

FOR THE U17 GIRLS FROM WESTERN SPRINGS THE NATIONAL TOURNAMENT FELT LIKE GROUNDHOG DAY ONE YEAR ON. THE SAME DRAMA OF LAST YEAR’S TOURNAMENT SEEMED DESTINED TO DICTATE PROCEEDINGS AND CARRIED THE TEAM ON A ROLLER COASTER RIDE RIGHT DOWN TO THE WIRE BEFORE IT ALL TURNED OUT TO BE THE SAME AS LAST YEAR. Made up mostly of White Stripes players with a sprinkling of Black Swans and two much needed guest players including our ‘soon to be a star’ goalkeeper on loan from Forrest Hill, the girls were up for the challenge. But with only a week to go they had their first practice where everyone was available and actually turned up. So the first game against TKU (Tournament favourites from the outset) was a bit of a lop-sided affair with one team very organized and the other still finding their feet. That was a 3–0 loss to Springs and a bit of a shake up. Game two against Cashmere Technical was notable for a ref’s decision to award a handball in the box against Springs which basically gifted the game to Cash Tec. Springs had four shots on goal to Cashmere Tech’s one so the penalty (unfairly awarded according to Cashmere’s bench) was the only real chance they had. Game three was all pressure now as Springs had yet to score a goal let alone win a game and the sun 18 April 2015 www.wsafc.org.nz

was going down on their chances of getting out of the pool rounds. No problems though as they blew away Stop Out with a 4–1 win to close out Day One. Day Two was on the Number One in front of a packed fenceline against Glenfield, arch rivals from winter 2014. A tough battle which ended in a 1–0 win to Springs after a period of intense pressure produced an own goal. Another win and Springs could be looking at the Championship semis… but Lynn Avon, who had no chance of getting through, had other ideas. They took out a 1–0 win to send the ‘Hoops’ to the Bowl and kindly took out Annabelle, Beth and the ‘soon to be a star’ keeper from Forrest, with one charging tackle that left all three sprawling in the box and the ref didn’t see anything wrong with it. So to the Bowl semis against Eastern Suburbs at sparrows fart on Sunday morning. Tired legs and sore muscles groaned through the first half as

both teams looked for something. Eastern Suburbs found the back of the net first and threw down the challenge. Springs lifted and drew level in the second half and found their form to clinch the win with a neat finish from Zoe. Now they had made the finals and looking back at last years semi they had also played Eastern Suburbs on Field 4 to go through to the final of the Bowl. The scene was perfect. Sun out and Field 3 looking a picture. Dunedin Technical (last years holders) were keen for some silverware while Springs had done this all last year already. After a strong start and looking likely to score at any moment the ball was hoisted behind the back four and in the chase back the ‘soon to be a star’ keeper got the communication slightly wrong and the striker for Dunedin nipped in to pinch first blood. Oh the despair! After all that pressure and Springs had nothing to show but a goal deficit. Then Dunedin handballed it in their own box as they tried to

clear from a corner. Surely this was the chance to equalize! But the ref had no idea what everyone was shouting about and waved them on. So then it was the turn of Emma, star of last years fightback performance, to take the ball down the left wing in the dying breath of the game and send in the most bullet-like left foot cross that flew through the keepers hands and

found the top of the net to draw level just before the ref’s final whistle and to send the crowded fans into a frenzy. Straight to penalties and now it was up to the keeper. After four penalties each the score was four saves to Ashleigh, now a star keeper from Forrest and two goals to Springs. Our turn to shoot and Margot had the winning of

the game and one hand on the Bowl as she stepped forward and slotted home with ease. Winning on penalties on number four after Emma dug them out of a hole with her left foot in the last seconds of the game…? Sounds like déjà vu all over again.

THE GREAT WSAFC BOOT SWAP SATURDAY 18TH APRIL 2015 (CLUB OPEN DAY)

BEFORE THE KICK-OFF TO THE 2015 SEASON, WE ARE ORGANISING A COLLECTION OF SECOND-HAND BOOTS IN GOOD CONDITION, TO BE ‘GIFTED’ TO KIDS WHO NEED A BIGGER PAIR OF BOOTS FOR THE NEW SEASON. How it works: Upstairs in the clubhouse, you will find a boot collection box. Bring in your old boots (tied together by the laces) in a bag marked with the size. Drop them into the collection box. During the Club Open Day on Saturday 18th April, you are invited to come along and select a pair of boots that will fit you/your child for the 2015 season. You can make a voluntary $5 donation if you take a pair of boots. Strictly one pair of boots per individual. The idea is to be able to pass on your old boots to others when they become too small, and in turn, you get to take a bigger pair for free. However, the offer of a free pair of boots is open to all families, whether you have an old pair to donate or not. Likewise, please feel free to donate old boots even if you do not want a pair in return. Any surplus boots will be donated to a Club who needs them.
