NOTICEBOARD Merry Christmas This year I really want to start by acknowledging and thanking the entire Executive Committee for their time, expertise and support this year. As the club continues to grow and expand, the demands on all of our volunteer committee members increases. We are really fortunate to have a strong and committed leadership team focused on continuing to look after and govern this club for the benefit of its members and its community. Warwick Hooper and Phil Dunn were new to the committee this year and along with Joanne Powell, Zoran Jerkovic, Barry Noyer, Michael Hope, Steve Lowe and Peter Andrew, I acknowledge and thank you all for your contributions to the club. We are very proud of the achievements we have made as a club both on and off the field, though we are also aware of the challenges we face to maintain our momentum and success. The Executive Committee have recently completed an exhaustive review of the five year plan for the club. This document outlines the club’s recent history and achievements and sets out our goals, plans and direction for the next five years. I encourage you all to read this document and to support us to achieve our goals. As always sponsors are an integral part of our club and I am pleased to

welcome Fuji Xerox as our new lead sponsor of the club. I thank them for joining us and for providing the fantastic new Toblerone pitch dividers that are a real asset to our facilities. I would also like to acknowledge our Gold Sponsors Jeremy Sutton Family Law, McDonald’s, PBT Transport, Bayleys and our Community Sponsors for their continuing support and engagement with the club. Together these sponsors enable the club to continue to develop our resources and to provide new activities, programmes and initiatives for our members and community. Our football programs and coaching have continued to develop better footballers and I’m really proud of the success and recognition our girls and boys, men and women are receiving at the highest level. This is a reflection of the plans and systems we have implemented and my sincere thanks to Neil, Rico, Geoff and all of our coaches. In particular, it is really pleasing to see our goal of representation in all of the Youth Metro Boys and Premier Girls grades fulfilled for next year.

Winter football sports registrations are already in full swing, with teams being put together, pre-season training starting and coaches and managers signing up.

As you may know, Evergreens gave some support to Myer as he embarked on his journey overseas to the Nike Academy. It is a truly awesome opportunity, so we asked his uncle, Murray Bevan, to give us an update. “The Nike Academy has proven to be the perfect home away from home for Myer, and has provided an exceptional platform for him to develop his game at an elite level. Since leaving for Birmingham on June 28th this year, Myer has been whisked along by the juggernaut that is The Nike Academy, travelling to Portland for pre-season, then around England and even to Moscow for games against local clubs and elite Nike academies there. Myer’s progress has been noticed by several clubs and agents (he’s currently the academy’s top scorer with 13 goals), and just recently he signed with ex-pro player-turnedagent Dean Gordon. Dean’s small stable of players means he can focus on positioning the boys with clubs that suit their skills and game

play, rather than being fed out by the bigger agencies who look to turn players over to clubs quickly for a profit. Dean has connections in the UK, Germany, Holland and Sweden so is casting the net wide for Myer. Western Springs’ support and development helped Myer achieve another milestone this year, as he was called up for the NZ U-20 squad that travelled to Vanuatu in August to play for a berth in next year’s FIFA World Cup in Korea. Under the watchful eye of Neil and Zoro, Myer’s game had excelled to the point where he was in the frame to be selected alongside some other promising young Springs boys. The kiwi lads were victorious in Vanuatu, routing the home side 5-0 in the final, with Myer collecting trophies for Golden Boot (5 goals) and Best Player in the OFC U-20 tournament, a feat that left even him speechless! Now into his fifth month at St. George’s Park in Birmingham, Myer’s crossed paths with the Liverpool and Barcelona first teams, and warmed up on the bikes with Julio Cesar from Benfica. His squad has had coaching sessions with the likes of Steve McLaren, and visits from the Australian league team as they prepared for their northern hemisphere games. It’s an experience that is constantly enriching him not only as a player but as a young man, offering chances that he would simply never have had if he hadn’t made the Academy’s final cut.

Myer’s devotion to carving out a career in football is stronger than ever, fuelled in no small part by the community of friends, coaches, managers, players and experts who guided him for many years at Springs.”

Myer with trophies for Golden Boot and Best Player in the OFC U-20 tournament in Vanuatu. He was one of 6 WSAFC members of the U-20 Oceania Championships winning squad that won entry to the 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup in South Korea. Testament to our success in Youth development ,this season WSAFC also have had one player signed to the Phoenix Academy, one squad member at the FIFA Women’s U-17 World cup, and one squad member at the FIFA Women’s U-20 World cup, and WSAFC won the national U-19 tournament at Napier.

Staying conditioned over the break is important as it means that as your build up into preseason or 7-a-side next year. Doing a couple of runs or strength and conditioning sessions such as the FIFA 11+ will ensure that you don’t get a sudden peak in load when you return into training. Below are a couple of good running drills that will build your cardio base. Aleshia is unfortunately leaving us as she is moving to Hamilton after looking after our Senior Women’s First and Reserves teams, and our U19’s in Napier, the U15’s tournament in Taupo, the U13 WSAFC Cup and a whole lot more this year. She is keen to continue to stay involved and I am hoping she will be able to help us out at some of those events again next year.

We will be welcoming Suzie Belcher to our team and she will be covering the teams that Aleshia was this year. Suzie has a Masters in Sport’s Injury Management and Therapy, and has work with international athletes from the UK and NZ, in Winter and Summer sports up to Olympic/Paralympic level and she will bring some heavy hitting experience to the BTY Physio team.

DO YOUR CHILDREN LOVE SCREEN-TIME? Try these tips to keep everyone happy these holidays: • Make it a rule that kids do a few activities of your choosing every day before any screen-time, e.g. played outside for 60 mins, played nicely with a sibling, phoned a relative or sent a card, 30 mins of creative play (such as Lego, drawing or baking), 30 mins of reading. You get the idea! • Search out apps which encourage creativity. Stop motion videos are really popular right now and are easy to make • Check out star-gazing apps in the holidays when kids get to stay up later

You can book online or text us to arrange an appointment

• Have the whole family practice their photography and share their favourite photos at the end of each day

Follow us on Twitter@back2yourfeet for updates on the team and other BTYF activities. www.wsafc.org.nz December 2016 13

• They can earn screen-time by doing extra chores; vacuuming = 20 mins screen-time, folding washing = 10 mins etc. Good luck! 14 December 2016 www.wsafc.org.nz

BEFORE THE KICK-OFF TO THE 2017 SEASON, WE ARE ORGANISING A COLLECTION OF SECOND-HAND BOOTS IN GOOD CONDITION, TO BE GIFTED TO KIDS WHO NEED A BIGGER PAIR OF BOOTS FOR THE NEW SEASON. How it works:

Thanks to our major sponsors: Fuji Xerox, McDonald’s, Bayleys, PBT and Jeremy Sutton

Upstairs in the clubhouse, you will find a boot collection box. Bring in your old boots (tied together by the laces) in a bag marked with the size. Drop them into the collection box. During the Club Open Day on Sunday 5 March you are invited to come along and select a pair of boots that will fit you/your child for the 2017 season. You can make a voluntary $5 donation if you take a pair of boots. Strictly one pair of boots per individual. The idea is to be able to pass on your old boots to others when they become too small, and in turn, you get to take a bigger pair for free. However, the offer of a free pair of boots is open to all families, whether you have an old pair to donate or not. Likewise, please feel free to donate old boots even if you do not want a pair in return. Any surplus boots will be donated to a club who needs them. www.wsafc.org.nz December 2016 15

Welcome to the WSAFC Evergreens newsletter. It been a busy few months, so have included a brief update on what’s been happening; COACHING SUPPORT In November the Evergreens sent Caleb Ward, who coached the 16th Conference team in 2016, to a coaching course with NZ Football, part of their Advanced Coaching Pathway, and one way we can help support coaching development. MYER BEVAN AND HIS EXPLOITS TO DATE As you may know, Evergreens gave some support to Myer as he embarked on his journey overseas to the Nike Academy. Dean’s small stable of players means he can focus on positioning the boys with clubs that suit their skills and game 10 December 2016 www.wsafc.org.nz

play, rather than being fed out by the bigger agencies who look to turn players over to clubs quickly for a profit.

OVER 40’S TOURNAMENT A great day to promote our club, and our club spirit. Teams from all over Auckland, and thanks go to the organisation by the Evergreen members, and especially Sean MacKinnon, it was a fabulous day, raising funds for the kitty. WSAFC Royal reached the final of the Evergreens Over 40’s Tournament, with 16 teams competing for the Cup. With an average age of over 50, two team members re-livened in the last 8 months, and no ring-ins, Royal only conceded one goal in their six games (unfortunately that one was in the final which Royal lost 1-0). QUIZ NIGHT – RAISED $1,500 PLUS!! On Friday 11 November, the 3rd Evergreens Trivia Quiz function was another success, to mirror the inaugural and successful November 2015 “summer” quiz night.

About 50% of the 80 players were first-timers, who all enjoyed a laugh, a gasp, a scream and a tear. Two new teams took to the podium at the end. Team Quizlamic Extremists took out 1st place and Team Bellies & Babes the 2nd place. The Evergreens “club culture and welfare” focus received solid support and the back account has been boosted another $1,500 plus! Acknowledgements were called, for tremendous support from the sponsors, Scoresportwear (Lotto), The Crown Hotel, Peter Baker Transport, Steve Noyer Moselle Racing Team Pukekohe, Warner Music, Mud Pie deli, Ebos Healthcare, Universal Video, Scott Sheppard Harley Club, The Mad Butcher, Nomads Bar & Restaurant, Mini Golf Enchanted Forest and Uptown Bounce. We were well supported in the auctions, led by Willie Sellars (Moselle Racing Team) and Dave……. (Scott Harley Club).

Quiz Facility operator “QWizard”, (Shane O’Driscoll) again officiated with their audio-video programme. (see https://www.facebook.com/ qwizard.net/ ) We look forward to the 2017 early season function this April SPONSORSHIP TO KANGA CUP The Junior Committee have confirmed they will be sending a team to the Kanga Cup held in Australia in July 2017 with the support of Evergreens – more details in the next newsletter. We plan this to be an annual event, giving our youth a goal to strive for to experience international competition. AND A REMINDER If you have not renewed your membership, just go to this link – we need your support. https:// membership.sportstg.com/ regoform.cgi?formID=58333

Ashleigh went to the FIFA Women’s Under 17’s World cup in October in Jordan.

He is leaving these shores in January to Missouri State University and we wish him well in this next stage of his life .

Liz Anton Liz went to the FIFA Women’s Under 20’s World cup, in PNG.

Lucas Imrie Lucas has been accepted at Loyola University in Chicago and hopes to leave in January, if all his paperwork comes through in time . Lucas was available during parts of last season and always looked capable of scoring and always gave his opposing defenders a very physical game. We will hopefully have Lucas back for spells in the season as they have a mid term break.

We are proud to have been able to support WSAFC this year, and are looking forward to continuing to sponsor and support the club in 2017. Enjoy your break, stay on your feet and see you on the sideline!

Stop motion videos are really popular right now and are easy to make • Check out star-gazing apps in the holidays when kids get to stay up later • Have the whole family practice their photography and share their favourite photos at the end of each day • They can earn screen-time by doing extra chores; vacuuming = 20 mins screen-time, folding washing = 10 mins etc. Good luck! 14 December 2016 www.wsafc.org.nz

THE GREAT WSAFC BOOT SWAP SUNDAY 5 MARCH 2017 (CLUB OPEN DAY)

BEFORE THE KICK-OFF TO THE 2017 SEASON, WE ARE ORGANISING A COLLECTION OF SECOND-HAND BOOTS IN GOOD CONDITION, TO BE GIFTED TO KIDS WHO NEED A BIGGER PAIR OF BOOTS FOR THE NEW SEASON. How it works: Upstairs in the clubhouse, you will find a boot collection box. 16 December 2016 www.wsafc.org.nz
