WESTERN SPRINGS AFC Symptoms of depression

Hey team,

Contact on 021Include 673 732sadness, www.backtoyourfeet.health.nz This month I would like to focus on Justin mental decreased appetite, sleep Clinic is located upstairs at Western Springs Pavilion, Seddon Fields, 108 Meola Rd health awareness in football. A recent disturbances, decreased pleasure and report from the Ministry of Health on interest in activities (including activities that the Social, Emotional and Behavioural the player previously enjoyed), excessive difficulties in New Zealand Children guilt, low energy, increased fatigue and based on the Strengths and Difficulties decreased concentration. Questionnaire highlighted the prevalence Helping people who are struggling of mental health difficulties in the general

population in New Zealand. As in the general population, there will be a lot of people at our club who struggle with mental health issues, and of course in football there can be pressures or situations that can exacerbate symptoms. The stigma of mental health issues is reducing, and I hope we are getting better at dealing with these issues when they arise.

Please be considerate and only park here if you have a mobility parking permit. All others will be towed at owners expense.

Just like injuries and illness, our mental health can affect our playing availability and performance. Football has been described as being a game ‘of the top two inches’ representing how important our brain is in the way we play. When we are not in the best of mental health, performances can suffer. Exercise has also been shown to improve our mental health, although sometimes the competitive nature of competition or stress of performance can have negative results. Life of a professional footballer is something many aspire too, but research has shown that professional footballers have higher rates of depression than the general population.

A little update from the team at PBT, with winter arrived we work hard to keep freight moving up and down the country. The winter weather disrupts the Cook Straight ferry services and closes roads, a great amount of work is put into managing these disruptions. The team at PBT wish all teams at Western Springs a great second half to the season with more fine days than wet. Go give it your best!

Scott Sheppard Club Captain

If you are aware of a player or club member who may be struggling with mental health issues then offer them the opportunity to be supported. Give them the opportunity to open up and discuss the difficulties that they are having and try and help them to find a solution. Sometimes just communicating about issues can help. Social support and having players feel like those around them care helps the player when they are dealing with things such as injury, loss in form, bad results etc. It is OK to ask for help… There are professional people who can help and the Mental Health Foundation has a list of support organisations on its website. COACH PROFILE

FIORENTINA 11th Grade Fiorentina LOVE the beautiful game. Our girls work very hard to be the best that they can be. This season the girls have been lucky enough to have their very own Football Fern coaching them once a week... congratulations to Liz Anton, who had her second appearance with the Football Ferns against Japan in June. Not only is she great with the girls but she is someone that they can aspire to! Maybe it’s the age difference, maybe it’s her coaching style, maybe it’s the drills, I don’t know, but apparently our little rockets prefer Liz’s coaching session to the ones that the “Old Men” put on later in the week (Thanks Kurt and Al and the rest of the dedicated parents that run around supporting kids in the rain). As much as we think we have age and experience on our side, the speed and skills don’t look quite as good on us at our training sessions as they do on Liz and team Fiorentina.

In a game dominated by men, watching our girls develop over the last couple of years has been a joy. From raw beginners to a determined and gutsy team, they have progressed through the ranks in their Premier Girls division from being utterly defeated in the first few games when they first started out together to now holding their own with the top Auckland teams. They pass the ball, they hold their positions and they play as a team. Most importantly they do this with a smile on their faces whether they win or lose (with odd cartwheel and giggle thrown in). We look forward to sharing the next few years with our girls and hope that they continue with their positive experiences in the beautiful (and occasionally not so beautiful –refer to the dad’s training sessions) game. Always learning, always trying and always smiling, what a way to live.

Why do you play / coach football? I play football because I love the game so much, there are so many positive assets you get from playing football inside and outside of football, for example, the amount of friends and people you meet. I currently have football friends all spread out around over New Zealand, from Queensland to Whangarei and even more internationally, and then also by playing football at such a young age it keeps you focused growing up, as you aren’t distracted by “teenage things”, I believe that me involving myself in soccer at such a young age has shaped me to the person I am today. I coach football because I love to help in peoples progress, I learnt the best from my dad Nobby Stiles who represented NZL in football, so I’m full of knowledge from him, so I love spreading and helping girls improve their skills. Pre-match routine? Stretching!! Stretching is so important, I always ensure to stretch at least 20 minutes before any game, and if I’m not stretching, I am rolling out. I also get my ankle strapping done and a rub down in my lower legs as they tend to get tight before my game. I make sure to drink a lot of water before I go to my warm up. 12 June 2018 www.wsafc.org.nz

What do you eat before a game? Eggs on toast or cereal, with a bottle of water. Favourite ground played at? Western Springs United ( Seddon Fields !!) love playing on turf. Stay focused and get involved, try take in everything your coach says to you, they’re full of knowledge who just want to make you a better player. What do you think is key for team success? Effective communication, positivity, good environment, respect, hunger to win. Who's your favourite professional team? Liverpool!!! my family have always supported them. They’ve significantly reduced the amount of rubbish needlessly going to landfill each week. And we’re no longer seeing messy, overflowing rubbish bins at Seddon Fields anymore either - hooray! It’s been an awesome effort by all club members who’ve gotten behind and supported this innovative project - we just might be the first football club in New Zealand to do it!

You’ll notice there are now bright new labels on all the bins around the turf to help people sort their own waste properly. Generally everyone is doing well and getting it right but please remind your teams and supporters that ALL takeaway coffee cups (and their lids) sold from the club cafe are eco-friendly and compostable (but NOT recyclable!) so please put them in the green compost bins after you’ve had your morning caffeine fix. If you bring one from a neighbouring cafe, take a moment to look up from the football action and check the lids and cups - some are compostable, some are recyclable, some are neither. So be sure to put them in the right bins please. This reduces a lot of work by club volunteers who sort and empty the bins each week.

NEXT MONTH... Next month is “Plastic Free July”, a national awareness campaign to reduce the use of single-use plastics. We can all do our bit by using reusable drink bottles and avoiding single use plastics where possible - the fish, whales and sea birds will thank you for it!

SPRINGS’ SUSTAINABILITY UPDATE OUR NEW CLUB RECYCLING AND ORGANIC COMPOST BINS HAVE BEEN A MASSIVE SUCCESS!
