and their coaches. Tackles were made, passes were completed and goals were celebrated by everybody; the small-sided games were played in great spirit and were a great way to start the season. There was of course the added bonus of a bowl of warm chips afterwards in a packed clubroom and the opportunity to watch our Women’s Premier team entertain. Throughout the in-house weekend a total of 110 teams from 5th to 10th grade played their hearts out for teams including, Brotherton, Ronaldo, Sharks, Mexico, Everton and Turtles. If the first weekend is anything to go by, we’ll be in for a great season of in-house football as our Springs kids start/continue to fall in love with the beautiful game! Saturday morning also brought the start of the AFF competitions and began on the turf at Springs with 9th Grade Mana kicking off at 9am against Metro. In their first game they showed some super skills particularly when attacking, scoring a number of goals

P9 WELCOME TO ALL GIRLS PLAYING FOOTBALL AT WESTERN SPRINGS The club has more than 400 girls playing from the 5th grade up to the 17th grade (inhouse and mixed teams, girls’ teams and Auckland football competitions ‘AFF’).The number of girls playing for the club continues to rise.

P11

P10 The club model for girls football is being reviewed this season. Currently the model is one of mixed girls and boys at the junior level (ages 5 – 9). The girls have the opportunity to stay in a mixed team through all levels of youth football, but on the whole, start playing in girls only teams from 9th-10th grade when the girls AFF completion starts. We are currently not sure this is the right model and are seeking internal and external advice around this. We are aware some girls are keen to play in girls only teams from an earlier age and we have moved this year to support this in some of the inhouse grades.

APRIL SCHOOL HOLIDAY PROGRAMMES

MENS FIRST TEAM UPDATE

Neil Emblen’s Programme for Boys This programme will be skills and drills based for part one, then a mid-morning break will be followed by games and competitions in part two, so plenty of fun for all! When: Where:

Wednesday 26 April – Friday 28 April Seddon Fields

Time:

9:30am – 12:30pm

Age:

5 years upwards

Register by: Wednesday 19 April 2017 Cost:

$115 incl GST – for all three days

Please register by Monday 19 April at the latest. Due to coach/player ratios we cannot accept late enrolments after this date. Please note we do not accept daily bookings and no refunds will be given. Please bring a change of clothing, towel, mid-morning snack, water bottle and sunscreen. https://membership.sportstg.com/regoform.cgi?formID=68043

Our goal is to continue to increase the number of girls playing football at the club, making sure the experience is a positive one and player-retention is at the same level (or better) than the boys.

We have only played one game to date and that was a very convincing 4–0 win over the Kevin Fallon coached Manukau City.

We aim to support the girls at all levels of social and competitive football and ensure there are equal opportunities for the girls. To this end, the club has recently appointed Andy Vernon as Football Development Manager to oversee the football programme for both boys and girls. In addition, Rico Wilson (coach of the Senior Women’s team) runs our girls football academies for those playing in development teams. In addition, David Cranefield and Michael Pleciak have joined the Junior Committee with a particular focus on girls football and ensuring girls football has a strong voice at this level.

We played very well in that game with new signings Adam Dickinson and 16 year old Matt Conroy amongst the goal scorers.

OUR GOALS FOR THIS YEAR ARE TO: • Ensure girls have equal opportunities and equal access to resources at all levels at the club. Review the current playing structure for girls/mixed football. • Have a clear and transparent high performance/ development structure with alignment to the boys/mixed models. • Explore the opportunities for girls development teams for the 7th and 8th grade, as currently happens for the boys/mixed teams. • Introduce a mentoring system with interested senior girls/women buddied with our junior girls teams. • Explore the opportunities for more girls tournaments/open days and sponsorship opportunities for girls football. If you are a player/coach/manager/mum or dad and have any concerns, issues, thoughts or ideas we would love to hear from you. Please do not hesitate to contact us by email. Regards David Cranefield (david.cranefield@gmail.com) Michael Pleciak (mjgpleciak@gmail.com)

Another new signing for 2017 is Andrew Blake. He had a superb game down the right hand side assisting two goals and was a constant threat to the Manukau defenders. I was very happy with all of my players and you can see that they are all striving to be in the team knowing we have such a strong squad this season. The player I was most pleased for on the opening day/game was our goalkeeper Elliot Munford. Elliot has waited patiently for his chance to start a league game after playing second fiddle to Adam McDonald for the last three seasons but has deserved his opportunity to get the nod. He is Springs through and through, and we have been his only Junior club which is great. That debut was for 12 years of hard work and dedication. I would also like to congratulate Elliot as he has secured a scholarship to join Seton Hall University in New Jersey. He will continue to battle for the number one shirt in the coming months before he leaves for the US mid August. We now look forward to a hectic schedule of games over the next three weeks. We play five games in the next 18 days so plenty of points up 10 April 2017 www.wsafc.org.nz

for grabs. It’s been a frustrating ten days without a game due to a couple of cancellations, but we have bonded very well as a team. We had a great team bonding afternoon on a Twilight Fishing Charter sponsored by Rex Dawkins and his Seahawk Charter business. Sixteen of us in nautical fancy dress theme had a great time pulling in plenty of legal snapper and kahawai and trevally from a great spot in the Rangi Channel. I must say it was a great way to relax, bond and get to know each other a little better, but keep that competitive sportsman edge trying to land the “fish of the day”. On our return we watched the All Whites beat Fiji in the World Cup qualifying whilst eating the fresh kahawai catch with chips in the Billfish Cafe and Restaurant at Westhaven Pier. Please can you consider these two local businesses if you ever want to plan any corporate or family events, as they are highly recommended and run by football friends of the club. I look forward to seeing any of you at the upcoming games. We have a very exciting team this season and I will go down on record as saying we will definitely entertain and enjoy our football this year and hopefully the success follows that.

P12 THE BALCONY PLAYER OF THE YEAR Having listening to game day analysis from the balcony over many years the senior committee was encouraged to give club members the opportunity to select their ‘player of the day’ So for each home league game we will offer one club member the opportunity to select their top three rated WSAFC players from the Men’s first team.

We will keep a points table of these selections through the year with the Balcony’s ‘Player of the Year’ winning a prize at the end of the season. Initially Balcony selectors will come from our life members after which we’ll start asking other club members for their rankings.

It was great to see the large number of people down at the club in the last week, and in particular all the new faces. I look forward to the season ahead!

MEN’S FIRST TEAM CLUB SWEEPSTAKE Join us in a club sweepstake and get to know your Men’s First Team squad. The Competition: Club members are invited to donate $150 and go into a random draw to win a nominated player from the Men’s First team squad (26 in total). At the end of the season there will be two prizes on offer (prize details to follow). The first prize will be offered to the holder of the player selected as the players ‘player of the Year’. A second prize will be offered for the ‘Balcony’ ‘player of the year’. If these happen to be the same individual we will default to the Balcony’s 2nd player of the year’ for the second prize.

This year I am coaching my son Noah’s development football team, 10th Grade AFF Team - Exporto.

We would encourage individuals or teams to participate for a bit of fun. Entries will be on a first come basis with the maximum number of entries matching the number of players in the Men’s First Team squad. Once we have the requisite number of entries we will let participants know when the player draw will occur and later advise participants of their nominated player. Anyone interested in participating should email their interest to warwick.hooper@ Xtra.co.nz. Once we have finalised participants we will advise your inclusion and only then request payment. All funds raised will go to the club.

After a few weeks of training, our first game of the season kicked off with enthusiasm and perseverance resulting in a 13–1 win for team Experto! Jude who is four, has just started his first ever season and plays in team Brotherton. Noah and Jude have enjoyed a positive football experience so far and with thanks to the team at Western Springs, they have embarked on their football self-discovery journey.

SENIOR REGISTRATION UPDATE WSAFC have 37 senior teams registered for the 2017 (one up on last season) with around 600 senior club members out of a total club membership of approximately 2600 (up 100 on last season)

As a family lawyer I am proud to sponsor the biggest soccer club in the country (Western Springs) where our ideas of success and gratification align.

For those few with registration payments outstanding could we please ask that your resolve this ASAP to avoid the wrath of the club manager.

A special thanks to Andy Vernon and Paul Speary who are doing a fantastic job at running the junior pool this year!

Saturday morning also brought the start of the AFF competitions and began on the turf at Springs with 9th Grade Mana kicking off at 9am against Metro. In their first game they showed some super skills particularly when attacking, scoring a number of goals

WELCOME TO ALL GIRLS PLAYING FOOTBALL AT WESTERN SPRINGS The club has more than 400 girls playing from the 5th grade up to the 17th grade (inhouse and mixed teams, girls’ teams and Auckland football competitions ‘AFF’).The number of girls playing for the club continues to rise.

The club model for girls football is being reviewed this season.

Our goal is to continue to increase the number of girls playing football at the club, making sure the experience is a positive one and player-retention is at the same level (or better) than the boys.

MENS FIRST TEAM UPDATE

We have only played one game to date and that was a very convincing 4–0 win over the Kevin Fallon coached Manukau City. We played very well in that game with new signings Adam Dickinson and 16 year old Matt Conroy amongst the goal scorers.

Yours in Football

Neil

THE BALCONY PLAYER OF THE YEAR Having listening to game day analysis from the balcony over many years the senior committee was encouraged to give club members the opportunity to select their ‘player of the day’ So for each home league game we will offer one club member the opportunity to select their top three rated WSAFC players from the Men’s first team.

We will keep a points table of these selections through the year with the Balcony’s ‘Player of the Year’ winning a prize at the end of the season. Initially Balcony selectors will come from our life members after which we’ll start asking other club members for their rankings.

SENIOR REGISTRATION UPDATE WSAFC have 37 senior teams registered for the 2017 (one up on last season) with around 600 senior club members out of a total club membership of approximately 2600 (up 100 on last season) 12 April 2017 www.wsafc.org.nz

For those few with registration payments outstanding could we please ask that your resolve this ASAP to avoid the wrath of the club manager.

N O T T U S Y M JERE It was great to see the large number of people down at the club in the last week, and in particular all the new faces. I look forward to the season ahead! This year I am coaching my son Noah’s development football team, 10th Grade AFF Team - Exporto. As a family lawyer I am proud to sponsor the biggest soccer club in the country (Western Springs) where our ideas of success and gratification align. A special thanks to Andy Vernon and Paul Speary who are doing a fantastic job at running the junior pool this year!
