Week One of Senior Club Football WSAFC Fatboys v Waiuku Saturday 7 April

Western Springs Football Club hosted their first ever junior girls Football Festival event on Sunday 15 April, with over 100 players aged 5-16 taking part. Andy Vernon (Football Development Manager) and Futsal Ferns captain Hannah Kraakman organised a number of skill activities and small-sided games and ensured all the girls that participated had fun and enjoyed the day. The event took place as a lead in for the Lotto NRFL Women’s Premier League match between Western Springs and Eastern Suburbs that afternoon. Junior committee members, David Cranefield and Michael Pleciak, said the event was to put the focus on junior girls’ football and make it special for all participants with the

overall aim of growing women’s football within the club. “We wanted to run a special event for our junior and youth girls from ages five to sixteen and we wanted to show that we support the girls and to do something different and a bit special for them,”. “One of the big goals was to build awareness around female football, we also wanted to create a link with the premier team and the reserve team and as part of that we had a lot of people help out with organizing fixtures and not having boys down on the pitch, with the event being all about the girls.”

In the clubhouse, a cold shower and a few warmer than the shower Speights also rekindled the images of the good old days. The two teams shared jokes, team speeches, players of the day nominations, and good wishes for the season. Our lengthy journey home to the big smoke was shortened by the memories of our best start to a season – maybe ever.

The focus of the programme was to teach the young players some injury prevention techniques, improve the quality of their movement patterns, build a little fitness and have some fun. We included exercises and activities from the FIFA 11+ and FIFA 11+ Kids warm up programme along with six balance and strengthening stations. We also did a little bit of ladder work and speed skills

Katie is back from her World Champs and is working Wednesdays and Fridays now. Silas has settled in and we are looking forward to the winter season.

The Fatboys started well, sensing spaces and trying ambitious through-balls to our new pairing up front. Offside flags were flying, yells from both teams about their accuracy. It stayed 0–0 for too long. At last, we settled down and scored. Soon it was 2–0, but we started to become too confident and Waiuku got back into the game with their neat triangle passing style - but in the end, rarely troubling the Fatboy’s defence. The rain came and the quality dropped. But a training style Fatboy’s goal just after half-time killed the game, and although the second half gave a few chances to Waiuku, the end score of 6–0 was a fair result as the Fatboys had also squandered many a good chance.

MATCH REPORT WSAFC hot springs v fencibles Sunday 15 Sunday 15 April saw the Hot Springs take on Fencibles in their second game of 2018. Coming off an 8–0 win last week against Pukekohe, the Hot Springs were in good form. Producing some very good football the Hot Springs were soon in the lead after a great through ball from Kiri Austin and an excellent strike from Kelly Bolus which found the back of the net. The Hot Springs continued to dominate the first half, creating some good opportunities. After a good charge down the right side followed by a cross into the box, Karen Chew laid a perfectly weighted pass back for Kelly Bolus to find the back of the net once again. Forever testing the Hot Springs backline, Fencibles were very dangerous on the counter attack forcing Julie Dunn

to pull off some great saves. Unfortunately Fencibles managed to sneak one back before half-time after a goalmouth scramble. 2–1 at halftime. The second half didn’t see as much of the fluid football that was seen in the first half from the Hot Springs. That said, the Hot Springs were still dominating and creating chances as well as doing a great job of keeping Fencibles at bay. As the clock was winding down Hot Springs managed another well worked goal with a great pass from Alice Burden which put Helen Kent in front of an open goal. 3–1 the final score. Alongside the existing rubbish bins dotted around the turf, there are new yellow-lidded bins for mixed recycling and green-lidded bins for compostable rubbish. Food bought from the club cafe downstairs is sold in compostable packaging (thanks to Geoff and Tara), so coffee cups, lids, paper bags and plates can now be placed into the new compost bins. These bins are emptied by WeCompost who turn this waste into, you guessed it, compost! The yellow bins will take all the usual suspects that you are used to recycling at home, such as glass and plastic bottles, and aluminium cans. All club members, players, supporters and visitors are encouraged to help us do our bit for the community and the environment by sorting their own rubbish.

The event was a way of showcasing progression for young female footballers and creating a link between Junior and Senior Women’s football. “What we’re trying to do is to create that link between the junior girls and the senior girls so that the junior girls can see that there is a pathway for them if they keep playing and practicing and then maybe will one day they can reach the senior teams at the club.”

On what felt like it was still a summer’s day, the Western Springs Fatboys travelled in car-pooled groups to play a new team to them almost in the Waikato – the Mighty Waiuku AFC. A grass pitch, a wooden clubhouse, and the sky turning grey – back to old school style football games. We learnt Waiuku might be short of players, but that never means you should be complacent. MATCH REPORT Sunday 15 April saw the Hot Springs take on Fencibles in their second game of 2018. Coming off an 8–0 win last week against Pukekohe, the Hot Springs were in good form. Producing some very good football the Hot Springs were soon in the lead after a great through ball from Kiri Austin and an excellent strike from Kelly Bolus which found the back of the net. The Hot Springs continued to dominate the first half, creating some good opportunities. After a good charge down the right side followed by a cross into the box, Karen Chew laid a perfectly weighted pass back for Kelly Bolus to find the back of the net once again. Forever testing the Hot Springs backline, Fencibles were very dangerous on the counter attack forcing Julie Dunn

WE’RE GREEN AND WHITE AT SPRINGS, BUT WE WANT TO BE A LITTLE BIT GREENER Thanks to some innovative thinking at our club, and a grant from Auckland Council’s Waste Minimisation Fund, you will see new recycling and compost bins around our grounds. After a recent audit, most of the rubbish found in our landfill bins comprised of coffee cups, paper food packaging and recyclable bottles. Aside from all that going into landfill unnecessarily, the bins often overflow on busy weekends. All that is about to change... Alongside the existing rubbish bins dotted around the turf, there are new yellow-lidded bins for mixed recycling and green-lidded bins for compostable rubbish. Food bought from the club cafe downstairs is sold in compostable packaging (thanks to Geoff and Tara), so coffee cups, lids, paper bags and plates can now be placed into the new compost bins. These bins are emptied by WeCompost who turn this waste into, you guessed it, compost! The yellow bins will take all the usual suspects that you are used to recycling at home, such as glass and plastic bottles, and aluminium cans. All club members, players, supporters and visitors are encouraged to help us do our bit for the community and the environment by sorting their own rubbish.
