MEN’S FIRST TEAM Hi Everyone. We are really at the business end of the season with three vital games to go. We have a very good win ratio with 15 wins out of our 19 games played so far but we have not managed to break away from three other teams and it really is all on as you can see in the below graphics. Remember only two teams get promoted and we are all focused on making sure we are one of the two. What we know is it is in our own hands and we know that if we pick up three more victories in our last three games we will be promoted back to the Premier League. Our games will be very tense but they are all fixture we are capable of winning if we stay disciplined and focused of the job in hand. We have lost a lot of players recently to scholarships in the US college system and also a lot through injury but I still have full confidence the boys we have available will see this job through.

We do make a late addition to our squad just before transfer deadline day in Tim Myers, Tim is a player that I have worked with before at Waitakere United and for the NZ U23 Olympic that went to London in 2012 and he has been immense in the four games he has appeared in. He has played for the full All Whites and is also a great lad and personality around the changing room. Any support that can be at any of these final three games would be greatly appreciated as it may just get us over the line. Our Committee’s at Junior, Senior and Executive have all built a great club and we need our Premier Men’s Team to be performing at the highest level possible. We have a vast quantity of elite youth players already in the fold and waiting in the wings so we need this pathway to be at Premier League level. Yours in football

2 August 2017 www.wsafc.org.nz

I often used to walk around Cox’s Bay park and I would see Western Springs playing football and I looked on in envy wishing I could turn the clock back and play football again. Thanks to the late Bill Davies initiative to devise Subfootball, I began to play mixed seven a-side football when I was 46. In 1998, two years later, encouraged by Keith Laurie who played for WSAFC, I came down to a pre-season kick around at Seddon Fields, with a lot of apprehension. Steve Wildsmith’s enthusiasm launched me onto the field against my better judgement and amazingly I started playing football again at 48 years old in the Over 30’s league. I decided at the start of the season that this season would be my last. I usually referee one half of the game and play in the other but on 22 July 2017,

the Bulavinaka Boys referee was very good and I took the chance to play the whole game. I ran the line in the second half and only came on the field for the last twenty minutes. There had been torrential rain before the game and the pitch was like a quagmire, especially in the middle but on the wings and in the 18 yard box it was playable. Towards the end of the first half there had been a skirmish and one of our players was sent off and we were down to ten men and for about half the game we struggled to keep our 3–1 lead. Normally I play left back and only rarely venture past the half way line but today I was directed to play right half, freedom to run amok at last. So with about 10 minutes to go and the rain pelting down, I ran into space on the edge of the 18 yard box, shouted for the ball, which was delivered perfectly for me to run onto. I controlled it well and hit it past the goalkeeper, it seemed surreal and the ball took an age to float in the air and hit the back of the net on the left of the goal. A feeling of elation. I turned back towards the centre circle to

MYER BEVAN, ITES L WH THE NEW ALTH A STRIKER WI TO REAL DESIRES SCORE GOAL

Words by Andrew Voerman/stuff.co.nz and photo by David Joseph/Phototek.nz

If strikers rise and fall by the goals they score, Myer Bevan is on the up and up. The 20-year-old has been included in the All Whites squad for next month’s World Cup qualifiers against the Solomon Islands, which is just reward for his remarkable run of late. In the past 15 months, he has gone from Auckland club football, to the Nike Academy in England, and then on to Canada, where he is now a professional with Vancouver Whitecaps 2. He has also represented his country at the Oceania Under-20 Championship and the subsequent World Cup, and at every stop, goals have been the constant. There were 13 for Western Springs in the 2015 winter season, which had him among the best in the northern region as an 18-year-old, and four more the following year. Then there were five, including a hat-trick, at the Oceania Under-20 Championship last September, where he was named player of the tournament; 25, during the 2016-17 season at the Nike Academy; two, at the Under-20 World Cup in South Korea in May; and two more in his first seven appearances in Vancouver. “He’s one of the only players I’ve worked with that’s got this real desire to score goals,” says Neil Emblen, who coaches Western Springs, and is an assistant with the national under-20 side. “You’ve got to put yourself in positions where you could get hurt, you’ve got to want to get in behind and make dynamic runs, and be able to receive and finish. He wants to be good at all of those aspects of a centre forward’s game, and that’s why he is one. He’s just hungry.” What is more revealing is what happens when the goals don’t come. “There were times where I’ve had to say ‘are you alright?’ after games, and it’s because he hasn’t scored,” says Emblen. “The rest of his play could be perfect, and he could have led the line well, and really put in a good shift, but he’s got this mentality where he wants to score. He was disappointed at the World Cup at times, because he didn’t score more goals, and that’s the thing about him, he’s disappointed every game he doesn’t score.” Bevan scored twice at the Under-20 World Cup, in New Zealand’s 3-1 win over Honduras. One of

them was a penalty - bread and butter stuff - but the other was voted the sixth best goal of the tournament in an online poll. After beating Honduras’ offside trap, and chasing down a long ball played forward, he entered the area from the right at a narrow angle and fired off a rocket of a shot, which hit the crossbar and rebounded down and in. Emblen says that while Bevan has the selfishness all good strikers need, he marries it with a work ethic that makes him an excellent teammate. “He’s got time for everybody, he’s a humble kid, and he just sort of thrives off of that. “It’s about his personality as much as it is about his ability. When he gets to a tournament, or when he gets on the field, it’s like he doesn’t want to let anybody down, because he’s got so many people rooting for him.” All Whites coach Anthony Hudson first talked Bevan up as a contender for the senior team back in May, and while he didn’t make the cut for the Confederations Cup, it was clear he would be in the mix sooner rather than later. Around the same time, he signed with Vancouver Whitecaps 2, who are the reserve team for the Canadian city’s Major League Soccer franchise. That deal followed a trial that came on the back of his performances at the Nike Academy, which is run by the sportswear company in an effort to give players from around the world a shot at living their dreams, with players training and playing as if they were at an English club. In Vancouver, Bevan plays with established All White Deklan Wynne, a longtime friend from back in Auckland, and another Kiwi, Francis de Vries. All Whites keeper Stefan Marinovic is also in town, having just signed for the Whitecaps’ MLS team, so the flight home for next month’s games won’t be a lonely one. “This is what I’ve always wanted, to play for my country at the highest level,” says Bevan. “It’s been a dream since I was young, and it’s been a crazy last few months, but I’m so glad it’s all happened, and that I’m about to become an All White.” www.wsafc.org.nz August 2017 13

MARGOT RAMSEY S RING WESTERN SPEM IER WOMEN’S PRMEN’S AND NZ WO UNDER 16’S Margot’s rise to being picked for the NZ under 16 squad has been amazing. On joining Springs, it was clear she was a talented young player; only two years ago, Margot was playing three grades up in the 17th grade girls team. Since then Margot has continued to make steady progress and this year she joined our women’s premier squad at 15 years of age. In July, Margot was selected to represent New Zealand under 16’s in the OFC Under 16 Women’s Championship in Samoa. At the time of writing, Margot had played a prominent role in securing qualification to the semi finals.

The WSAFC Hoodie, great for the winter days, nice and warm but not too heavy. Made of 95% matt poly and 5% elastane, this hooded sweat top features a half zip and hood. Great for kids and adults, buy now at our on-line shop - just go to the ‘ONLINE SHOP’ tab on our website, or direct to: http://www.lottosports.co.nz/catalog/western-springs-afc-100869.htmx

A great price (similar hoodies sell for around the $100 mark). Plus, you can personalise your hoodie by adding your initials. Juniors 6yrs – 14yrs

If successful in the tournament, Margot will stand a great chance of being selected for New Zealand to compete at the FIFA Under 17 Women’s World Cup in Uruguay in 2018. Margot’s skill set and game understanding allows her to play anywhere in the midfield or up front and she has that ability to change a game with a piece of individual skill. She is learning all the time from the senior players at Western Springs and works hard to improve every training session. She is an inspiration to all of our junior and youth players with dreams of representing the Football Ferns or All Whites; if you work consistently hard at your game in training then opportunities do arise and then the world can be your oyster! Margot’s future whether at Springs or overseas has a huge amount of potential, and alongside this we hope that she can also keep progressing up through the NZ teams and represent the Football Ferns in the future!

Emeralds won the fencibles 12 th grade tournament!

JARVIS KIRKBECK AT THE NEW YORK RED BULLS CAMP We were heading to NY for a business trip and took the opportunity to put Jarvis in an intensive New York Red Bulls residential week-long camp.

The New York Red Bulls (US Major League Soccer Team) run the Regional Development School which is an elite soccer training program for the tri-state (NY, NJ, & Connecticut). It offers young soccer players ages 7 to 14 an opportunity to receive supplementary training from Red Bulls’ professional trainers. Intended solely for competitive and elite travel level soccer players, the advanced curriculum is specially designed to target individual technical aspects of the game. The RDS serves as a means of identifying the region’s top talents, giving them the best possible chance of reaching the New York Red Bulls Academy teams. The camp was held at a private boarding school in New Jersey where the kids were treated like pro athletes. They played from dawn until dusk, ate enormous healthy buffet 18 August 2017 www.wsafc.org.nz

meals and finished the day playing FIFA in their dorms. “Soccer” heaven. There were around 200 boys from all over the Tri-State area. Entry was by trial so the standard was high. Jarvis managed to get in the top group for under 14 year olds and said it was super hard work but he learnt a ton.

It was quite an experience for him playing with American kids who were very skilled and very vocal. When any of them forgot Jarvis’ name, they yelled “New Zealand” across the field instead! At the closing ceremony, they gave out two awards per age group. One was for a skills challenge and the other was for outstanding character on-and-off the field, which Jarvis won. One of his coaches gave a lovely speech about why they chose Jarvis; his work ethic, great attitude, that he was team player and never gave up. I feel it’s a real testament to the values that WSAFC coaches encourage at every opportunity. People like Jarvis’ coach of three years, Phil Dunn, who is always so positive and encouraging and makes sure the kids are growing not just as footballers but as good humans. I can’t speak for the whole team, but I know it’s really rubbed off on Jarvis.

The Fencibles tournament was the first for the Emeralds this season, and also the first time that the team has played against other 12th grade teams. Playing up a grade in the AFF, the Emeralds are competing in the 13th grade Premier competition, and have got used to competing against older and stronger girls. The first game of the tournament was against the feisty Metro girls. The Emeralds were a little slow to start but pulled off a 2-0 win with many other shots on goal not finding the back of the net. Next up was Eastern Suburbs with a comfortable 5-0 win for the Emeralds – the highlights of the game were a brace from Jess McHardy and a cracking goal from a header (off a corner) for Vihba Godha. Further wins over Waitemata Ferns (30) and tournament hosts Fencibles (1-0) saw the Emeralds easily top the pool. The final against Bucklands Beach was a tense match with plenty of chances rattling the crossbar or just wide while our defence calmly nullified any opposition attacks. Finally in the last few minutes Helena O’Connor latched on to a through ball

Five wins from five games, no losses or draws, 12 goals scored and none conceded. Cant ask for

more than that. The Emeralds played great team football, had lots of fun with awesome support from parents and siblings and came away with a well deserved win. We will be looking for another win at the Eastern Suburbs tournament in a few weeks and the WSAFC tournament to finish the season at the end of September.

KE N S ’ E L G I N N U MCG 52 YEAR G HT U O R D L A GO

Two weeks after Ken’s 67 year birthday the Reefers poured out their congratulations for Ken scoring a goal and breaking a 19 year goal-drought. I usually referee one half of the game and play in the other but on 22 July 2017, 10 August 2017 www.wsafc.org.nz

the Bulavinaka Boys referee was very good and I took the chance to play the whole game. I turned back towards the centre circle to

find the Reefers team on mass running towards me smiling and shaking my hand with congratulations. I had scored!! BUT, I thought surely this goal drought is much worse than 19 years! This 19 year goal drought is only for Western Springs. When did I last score a goal in amateur football, I asked myself? So the story goes; I badly injured my left knee in a warm up game for the 1965/66 season and I could not play football and I turned to hockey instead and I did not play amateur association football again until 1998, a break of 33 years. So when did I last score a goal? I remember it well, I was 14 years old playing as a ‘ring in’ for my two elder brothers team, Central Methodists, in the churches league in Preston, England. The match was played on

Moor Park, across the road from Preston North End’s ground, Deepdale. I must not have been playing too badly because in the second half they let this 14 year old take a free kick on the right about mid-way between the half way line and the 18 yard box. The attack and the defence were crowded into the goal mouth. They shouted for me to hurry up but in my rush I over hit the free kick and it sailed over the attack and defence, bounced past the goalkeeper and into the left side of the net. I had scored, I remember being very pleased with myself but the game just restarted and the moment passed. It was in March 1965, near the end of the 1964/1965 season. So my goal drought in amateur association football lasted from about March 1965 to July 2017; for over 52 years!!

12 August 2017 www.wsafc.org.nz

Y E S M A R MARGOT S G N I R P S N WESTER REMIER WOMEN’S P MEN’S O W Z N D N A S ’ 6 1 R E D UN Margot’s rise to being picked for the NZ under 16 squad has been amazing.

I can’t speak for the whole team, but I know it’s really rubbed off on Jarvis.

, S D L A R E M E S E L B I C N E F WOTNH THE 12 GRADE T N E M A N R U O T The Fencibles tournament was the first for the Emeralds this season, and also the first time that the team has played against other 12th grade teams. Finally in the last few minutes Helena O’Connor latched on to a through ball

and calmly slotted the ball into the net for a well deserved one nil win.

Go the mighty Emeralds ď Š

WSAFC EMERGENCY PROTOCOLS Severe weather storms and accidents happen and occasionally we have emergency situations at WSAFC and Seddon Fields. These protocols will keep you and your teams safe at Seddon Fields. Severe Weather

Be safe. Plan ahead

Lightning

“If you can see it, flee it. If you can hear it, clear it.“

Earthquake

If in doubt, clear the fields. Severe weather may include tornados, hail storms, gale force winds or serious storms. Lightning is dangerous and has struck and killed footballers on the field. If you can hear thunder then the associated lightning are within auditory range… about 9.5-12.5km away. The distance from the origin of lightning to where it can strike can also be 9.5-12.5km. Please treat all thunder storms as serious. If you are inside, stay inside, stay where you are until the shaking stops. Drop to your knees. Cover your head and neck with your arms to protect you from falling debris - if you are able to crawl for additional cover under sturdy desk or table. Stay away from glass, windows, outside doors and anything that could fall such as heaters and light fixtures. Hold on to sturdy covering so you can move with it until shaking stops.

Drop, cover, hold. During Trainings or Games

If possible move away from buildings, streetlights or utility wires. Stay clear of light towers and other tall structures. If the earthquake is ‘long and strong’ there is a risk of Tsunami. Evacuate to the safe Tsunami zone in the car parks by Western Springs High School.

Tsunami

If there is a long and strong earthquake, get uphill.

Seddon Fields is located with the Evacuation Zone for a medium sized Tsunami. Move immediately to the nearest higher ground. Know where the tsunami evacuation route goes – the safest place is toward the zoo or Western Springs College. During Trainings or Games Clear the field immediately and move to higher ground. Listen to local radio stations and do not return to the evacuation zone until given the all clear. During Trainings or Games • If there are others in the club, shout ‘FIRE, FIRE, FIRE!’ and assist them out of building • Activate Fire Alarms

Fire

“Get Down, Get Low, Get out – Fast”

• ‘Get Down, Get Low, Get out - Fast.’ • If you can, close doors behind you to stop the fire spreading. • Once out, stay out – never go back inside. • Meet at the planned meeting place – in car park outside club • If you can’t get out of the club, close the door of the room you are in and put a towel under it to stop the smoke coming in. Go to the window and yell ‘FIRE, FIRE, FIRE!’ Wait to be rescued. • If there is a fire at Seddon Fields, Call 111 immediately

Further information and instructions will be in our clubhouse, on our website and on our App. Please take the time to read them incase of an emergency. www.wsafc.org.nz August 2017 23
