CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE AN OT HE R HA PP Y NE W YE AR EV ER YO NE AN D WE LC OM E TO GS ! EX CIT ING YE AR OF FO OT BA LL AT WE ST ER N SP RIN At last December’s AGM there was a change in Executive positions. Martin Bell has stood down after five years as Chairman and I have been appointed to the role. On behalf of the club I would like to sincerely thank Martin for his wonderful years of service to the club and acknowledge the way he has very capably led the club over the past five years, during a period of great growth and change. We really value your contribution Martin and though work may have unfortunately got in the way of football recently, we hope to see you in the future occasionally playing for the Royals and supporting from the balcony. I have been involved in the club for ten years in various committee, coaching and playing roles and
along with the rest of the Executive Committee we look forward to continuing to develop and govern the club for the wonderful community we have here. We want to be a fun and social place where all our members, our Junior parents, and our guests immediately feel welcome, valued and engaged with the club and are provided with the very best facilities. We want to offer all of our players the best opportunities to learn, grow and thrive and for our Premier teams to achieve success against the very best opposition. A couple of significant changes occurred over the summer and I would like to welcome McDonalds as a new key sponsor of the club. We have also been very fortunate to attract Richard “Rico” Wilson
to the club as the new Director of Women’s Football. Rico is a very experienced and well respected coach and will be looking to replicate for our Junior and Senior girls the success Neil has had developing our boys side. Registrations are now open and we are expecting larger numbers again so please get onto the website and register as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. All the best for 2015 and I look forward to seeing you around the club.

JUNIOR FOOTBALL OPEN DAY AT WESTERN SPRINGS Winter football sports registrations are already in full swing, with teams being put together, pre-season training starting and coaches and managers signing up. Now here is a chance for your kids to dust off their football boots or give football a try. Head down to Western Springs Football Club on Meola Road on Saturday 21st February 10am – 3pm for the open day. There will be various stations with coaches helping kids to learn and practice core skills, and fun small games will be run throughout the day. Supported by McDonald’s, who sponsor WSAFC and are the national partner to New Zealand Football Juniors, there will be a blow-up pitch to play on, and other football related activities for everyone to enjoy, as well as the possibility of seeing some very wellknown faces. Gold coin donations will be collected with all proceeds going to the Ronald McDonald House.

SPONSORSHIP PUTTING YOUR BUSINESS CENTRE STAGE AT WSAFC WSAFC has over the past five years become a hub of activity in the community. Over 8000 people pass through the facilities every week during the season of April – October and almost half as many again in the off season. This provides a high frequency, high reach opportunity for businesses wanting to take an active role at a grass roots level and within this community. An opening now exists for a few great companies to partner with WSAFC as sponsors and in doing so assist with the continued growth and strength of the club.
THREE TIERS OF SPONSORSHIP ARE AVAILABLE FOR CONSIDERATION

Sponsorship of the club by local businesses is a great way to differentiate your business by supporting your current and potential customers . For national and regional businesses, this is a unique chance to build your brand by engaging with an
influential and affluent customer set at their place of choice. The sponsorship period will follow the calendar year commencing in January 2015. As one of the fastest growing sports in New Zealand, it is set to be a huge year for football and WSAFC with the FIFA Junior World Cup in NZ in June and continued growth of WSAFC club and teams.
If your business would like to take centre stage in this community hub please contact Miranda Burdon on 0274741019 or Miranda.burdon@xtra.co.nz to discuss these opportunities or for further information. www.wsafc.org.nz February 2015 9
CLUB PHYSIO Having been out of the clinic for a month with the FIFA Club World Cup in Morocco, it’s been great to get back and catch up with some of the Neil Emblem Academy prodigies and other club members. And I am really looking forward to meeting some of our new club members. I hope you have all had a great break and are looking forward to getting back into some regular football. The topic of this newsletter is going to be based around how to build “load”, or the amount of work and stress on our bodies as we progress from preseason and into the season. Often we have had a good break over December and January and the start of the season is a surprise to our unconditioned bodies. The key to coping with the load of preseason training is to gradually build into it, rather than suddenly overdoing it. Coaches need to be aware that players will need a couple of training sessions under their belts before they are able to push their players hard. Starting with the FIFA 11+ a couple of times a week along with some interval runs with a rest day between each run will ensure the body is able to cope with the increase in load and will get stronger rather than breakdown.
SYMPTOMS OF OVERLOAD • Persistent pain after exercise • Persistent fatigue after exercise • An unexplained drop in performance • Poor quality of sleep despite being tired • Lots of minor injuries that don’t resolve within a notmal timeframe
KEYS TO MANAGING LOAD: • Start by going out for a couple of comfortably paced jogs before you start your preseason training 10 February 2015 www.wsafc.org.nz
• Have a rest day after a training day where you do some active recovery (such as a 20 min walk) this will help to reduce muscle aches and pains • Listen to your body, if you are getting persistent pains, or feeling particularly fatigued, reduce your load. • The fitter you are, the better you will cope with preseason and the less risk you have of being injured.
We are all looking forward to the competitive season in the Premier League for both our Senior Men’s and Women’s teams and wish all the rest of the club teams all the best for the 2015 season. Follow us on Twitter @back2yourfeet for updates on the team and other BTYF activities
• Wear supportive, comfortable footwear that is suited to the terrain you train on
Stay on your feet and see you on the sideline!
At the clinic Jess Mathews will be joining our team as a physio this year, and will be helping out with our senior men’s team. Katie will also be working part time but will be recovering from surgery and so she will join us as she gets stronger. She will also be looking after the New Zealand Ice Fernz team on their World Championship in March!
We are here for all WSAFC members and their families and friends, WSAFC members don’t pay a surcharge

THE GREAT WSAFC BOOT SWAP SATURDAY 21ST FEBRUARY 2015 (CLUB OPEN DAY)
BEFORE THE KICK-OFF TO THE 2015 SEASON, WE ARE ORGANISING A COLLECTION OF SECOND-HAND BOOTS IN GOOD CONDITION, TO BE ‘GIFTED’ TO KIDS WHO NEED A BIGGER PAIR OF BOOTS FOR THE NEW SEASON.. How it works: From early February there will be a boot collection box upstairs in the club house. Bring in your old boots (tied together by the laces) in a bag marked with the size. Drop them into the collection box. During the Club Open Day on Saturday 21st February, you are invited to come along and select a pair of boots that will fit you/your child for the 2015 season. You can make a voluntary $5 donation if you take a pair of boots. Strictly one pair of boots per individual. The idea is to be able to pass on your old boots to others when they become too small, and in turn, you get to take a bigger pair for free. However, the offer of a free pair of boots is open to all families, whether you have an old pair to donate or not. Likewise, please feel free to donate old boots even if you do not want a pair in return. Any surplus boots will be donated to a Club who needs them.
