C’MON WSAFC! NOMINATE YOUR TERRIFIC COACHES AND MAYBE WE CAN HAVE ANOTHER WINNER FROM WSAFC THIS SEASON! Every year, over 6,000 coaches volunteer their time to help Kiwi kids “kick start” their football dreams. They spend their weekends coaching local teams and making sure children get active, develop their football skills and, most importantly, have fun.

New Zealand Football and Junior Football partner McDonalds once again are teaming up to find the ‘2017 McDonald’s Junior Coach of the Year.’ Last year our very own Scott McKee was the AFF winner.

Over a six week campaign beginning May 29, New Zealand Football and McDonald’s will be asking the football community to nominate their coach of the year for 2017 via an online application form – www.nzfootball.co.nz/coachof-the-year

Nominations are encouraged for positive behaviour both on and off the pitch, including supporting players positively from the touch line, introducing new players to the game and helping out in their local community. This year we will have three prize categories: 1. Regional shortlist winners (3 from each Federation). Each to receive a coaching equipment pack to use for training and games. 2. Regional winners (1 from every Federation). Each to receive a coaches apparel pack. 3. National winner (1 overall winner). One winner to receive a 2017 Club World Cup experience for two people in Abu Dhabi valued at $12,000

In a thrilling final that stopped the tournament, Vitesse held their nerve to see off the tourists in a nail biter!

WINNER

Word had spread after the pool rounds about this team in green and white from Auckland that had been playing some beautiful football and scoring some spectacular goals. The sideline crowds just kept on growing as Vitesse went deeper into the tournament until the much awaited final against Mongo from NSW. Mongo had suffered a 3–0 defeat at the hands of our neighbours Eastern Suburbs in the pool rounds and finished 2nd in their pool. But ES were knocked out by the CUFC academy side in the quarters and went on to finish 5th. Vitesse on the other hand went through unbeaten with some pretty tasty scorelines to savour en route to the final.

very much like home advantage we were finding the back of the net with ease. In fact Maxi B opened proceedings with a hat trick and Will fired in a rocket of a free kick on our way to a half time score of 7–0. The final score of 10–0 was especially pleasing because we had kept a clean sheet thanks to some tidy shot stopping and fantastic ball distribution by stand-in keeper Joel Robinson-Gomas from Forza. Game Two was against the wily Waimak Red team who played a high press and rode their luck on the challenges. Oscar Duffy broke the deadlock bang on the half time mark with a dancing run through three players at the top of the box and drew the keeper before neatly tucking it under his dive. Another tense half before Will McKee put the game beyond doubt and we finished 2–0. Day Two and our last pool game saw us face up to Aoraki who had been watching us from the sideline and even listening in to the pre match and half time coach talks hoping for some secret ingredient to our success maybe.

But it wasn’t all plain sailing for Team Vitesse. The first match against Selwyn started with a nasty foul on Will McKee that left him a cripple for a few anxious minutes. Then Max McInnes landed heavily on his knee in the goal mouth and that meant he was out for the rest of the game. Freddie Kyriak was still jetlagged and had to watch the game from the sideline while Fenton Murdoch not 100%, struggled to find his full energy and was sub for a large part of the game as well. But the rest of the troops were firing on all cylinders and with the larger goals (6m x 2m) and the turf feeling

www.wsafc.org.nz July 2017 15

They too piled on the pressure and some bigger players were making life really difficult for the smaller but grittier Vitesse boys. It was off a corner that Freddie Kyriak found the net with a cracker of a header to give us the lead. But the pressure was telling and our slick passing was starting to get a bit wobbly. Max McInnes and Daniel Brown both had to muscle up and secure the high ball as bomb after bomb was launched down field from their keeper. A scrambling midfield consisting of Theo Gorman and George Walker and Ari Bailey had to weather the storm too and the ball was eventually shot goal ward from Will. The defender couldn’t avoid helping it in for the oggie.

They surged back and won a corner of their own and scored straight away. Vitesse then steadied the ship and managed to control the tempo of the game by finding their targets and completing their passes, denying them the ball and just keeping possession. Final score 2–1 and we had topped our pool and gone through unbeaten. QF vs Murwillumbah FC (QLD) Theo set the tone early with a header from our first corner that found the back of the net. This Aussie team were tall and skilful but they struggled to break down our sliding defense. So many of their attacks were frustrated by Max M and Will across the back who controlled the defensive 3rd like territorial

WSAFC EMERGENCY PROTOCOLS Severe weather storms and accidents happen and occasionally we have emergency situations at WSAFC and Seddon Fields. These protocols will keep you and your teams safe at Seddon Fields. Severe Weather

Be safe. Plan ahead

Lightning

“If you can see it, flee it. If you can hear it, clear it.“

Earthquake

If in doubt, clear the fields. Severe weather may include tornados, hail storms, gale force winds or serious storms. Lightning is dangerous and has struck and killed footballers on the field. If you can hear thunder then the associated lightning are within auditory range… about 9.5-12.5km away. The distance from the origin of lightning to where it can strike can also be 9.5-12.5km. Please treat all thunder storms as serious. If you are inside, stay inside, stay where you are until the shaking stops. Drop to your knees. Cover your head and neck with your arms to protect you from falling debris - if you are able to crawl for additional cover under sturdy desk or table. Stay away from glass, windows, outside doors and anything that could fall such as heaters and light fixtures. Hold on to sturdy covering so you can move with it until shaking stops.

Drop, cover, hold. During Trainings or Games

If possible move away from buildings, streetlights or utility wires. Stay clear of light towers and other tall structures. If the earthquake is ‘long and strong’ there is a risk of Tsunami. Evacuate to the safe Tsunami zone in the car parks by Western Springs High School.

Tsunami

If there is a long and strong earthquake, get uphill.

Seddon Fields is located with the Evacuation Zone for a medium sized Tsunami. Move immediately to the nearest higher ground. Know where the tsunami evacuation route goes – the safest place is toward the zoo or Western Springs College. During Trainings or Games

AUGUST MAGAZINE DEADLINE Material FRI 18 AUGUST 5pm Distribution FRI 25 AUGUST

Clear the field immediately and move to higher ground. Listen to local radio stations and do not return to the evacuation zone until given the all clear. During Trainings or Games • If there are others in the club, shout ‘FIRE, FIRE, FIRE!’ and assist them out of building • Activate Fire Alarms

Fire

“Get Down, Get Low, Get out – Fast”

• ‘Get Down, Get Low, Get out - Fast.’ • If you can, close doors behind you to stop the fire spreading. • Once out, stay out – never go back inside. • Meet at the planned meeting place – in car park outside club • If you can’t get out of the club, close the door of the room you are in and put a towel under it to stop the smoke coming in. Go to the window and yell ‘FIRE, FIRE, FIRE!’ Wait to be rescued. • If there is a fire at Seddon Fields, Call 111 immediately

CHRISTCHURCH INTERNATIONAL CUP LITTLE LEGENDS… 11TH GRADE VITESSE DEFEAT AUSSIES TO WIN THE CUP!! In a thrilling final that stopped the tournament, Vitesse held their nerve to see off the tourists in a nail biter!

But the rest of the troops were firing on all cylinders and with the larger goals (6m x 2m) and the turf feeling 16 July 2017 www.wsafc.org.nz

Their keeper too was outstanding and many of our shots were dealt with comfortably. It would take something a bit special to beat this guy. Following the script, up steps Maxi B who already was by now the darling of the tournament according to Director Riccardo Feleitti. A lovely assist from Oscar and Maxi unpicked the lock. 1–0. Straight from the kick off they hoofed a long ball with a ‘hint’ of off side and they had won themselves a corner. Mongo had always looked dangerous from the set piece and their tall timber climbed free to nod home the equalizer.

tigers. Meanwhile up front we were finding our Mojo again with goals coming to Oscar, Theo and Ari and even Will and Max M got a slice of the action with Carlo Imre firing in those lethal crosses from the right wing. Final score 6–0. SEMIO FINAL time and now we had the Academy from CHCH who happened to be the hosting club. Well into our groove now, we worked the ball into the striker’s feet and Maxi B calmly turned his player and slotted home. 1–0 and we looked in control. Then the hosts were allowed too much space at the top of the box and a long ranger squirted through Joel’s gloves and into the net. This was really Joel’s only mistake all tournament in a near faultless display that saw him take home the Golden Glove but for that moment he was in bits.

Half time at 1–1 and the game was teetering on a knife edge. Would we prevail if it went to penalties? Could we find some way through? Theo was like a demon chasing down everything and then fed a ball forward to Will who was unmarked at attacking mid. His first touch drew the keeper to the edge of the box and the second neatly lofted the ball over his reach and into the gaping net. Goal! One hand was on the Cup. We just had to manage the game from here. By now we were old hands at this. This team had grown and developed into a well oiled outfit playing a beautiful brand of football and all the Kiwi teams including Eastern Suburbs were cheering in support of the team in green and white. The final whistle blew and the roar was deafening.

10 minutes later order was restored when Maxi and Will combined to find three more goals before half time. CUFC were now spectators in this game as Vitesse started to dismantle any hope they might have harboured of keeping pace with this fired up force of nature who were running rampant. Daniel Browne and then George Walker shared scoring honours before Maxi B was unceremoniously chopped down in the box. The call went out for Joel to step up to take the ensuing penalty. Without hesitation or nervousness he nailed it and all was again right with the world. Will McKee capped it off with a fine header to bring us to the deserved scoreline of 8–1 and we were heading to the final. CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL TIME VS MONGO (NSW) They say that you can’t really imagine the pressure of Finals football until you reach one. Every touch is under scrutiny, every pass, every decision. Mongo were fast and big and they applied the blowtorch pressure that you would expect from an Aussie team who are well drilled and out for glory.

We had won the Cup and as it turned out Maxi Beullens also claimed the MVP and the Golden Boot. Joel was awarded the Golden Glove and the team drank in the celebrations and the huge praise from the organisers and the watching fans. Vitesse were “deserved winners” and ‘walked like the Champions that they are.’ Heady stuff. Turns out the secret ingredient that the coach had given them at those pre match chats was simple. It was just some self-belief. The boys did the rest!

During Trainings or Games Clear the field immediately and move to higher ground.

Further information and instructions will be in our clubhouse, on our website and on our App. Please take the time to read them incase of an emergency. www.wsafc.org.nz July 2017 19
