P7 That night we all relaxed at the hotel with a team dinner prepared by our Masterchefs Blair and Tania, followed with a World Cup quiz. DAY 3 – SEMI FINALS! We knew going into this game that the opposition was going to be tougher than what we had previously experienced. Richmond FC was a physically aggressive team, with a strong midfield and dangerous striker. However, again the boys dominated throughout the game and had multiple shots on goal, unfortunately none of which found the back of the net. A little déjà vu was starting to set in… With momentum building and time ticking down, the boys kept us on the edge of our seats and with one minute to go, a cross from Miles, found Gamado in the box, who put it away with a tidy volley. Bullets were through to the finals with a 1–0 WIN! Goal scorers: Gamado Kedir Man of the Match: Aidan Price FINALS! With the final upon us, Joe’s advise for the boys was to have no regrets and to give it their all. The team’s performances throughout the tournament had been constantly high and they were well deserving of their spot in the final. Nomads FC were a solid side and great competitor however within the first few minutes of play, the Bullets were on attack with a shot on goal that narrowly missed. It was another game of

P9

P8 RESERVES UPDATE

possession and shot after shot on goal, with the crossbar taking a hammering and the Nomads GK working overtime. Watching the boys perform you could see that they wanted the win, with every player on the pitch giving 110%. They were rewarded with a great goal by Gamado, which sent the crowd into overdrive. Although there were many more opportunities for other Bullets goals, the score remained 1–0 and was enough to give Joe and the boys their welldeserved victory!

Like the First Team, the Reserves also had a new look this year. The senior committee demanded that the Reserves be the second best team in the club and wanted an open trials for all club members. From the first training session of over 40 players, a little over a month later, the lucky 16 were chosen. Key to the selection was the fact that reserves league will be an under 23s competition next year so youth was given a chance over... the more experienced. The squad was made up of the best of the Diamond Geezers and 2017 AFF Men’s Division three winners, Munro, a few under 19s and only one player joined from outside of Springs.

Goal scorers: Gamado Kedir Man of the Match: Aidan Price To top off the evening, Sam McLaggan our God in Goal, was awarded the Golden Glove for the tournament. An achievement we were all extremely proud of. A MASSIVE THANK YOU, to all of the parents and siblings who supported the Bullets on this journey. From the early season fundraising, to the tournament cooking, washing, car-pool all (in particular Blair and Tania who were up each day at the crack of dawn!). And CONGRATULATIONS to the Joe and Bullets team, who the MC said was best football he’d seen, played by 14 year olds for a very long time! You’ve made us all so very proud!

It has been a successful season to date and are currently sat in third place. Whilst first place seems settled by East Coast Bays, we are keen to take that second place from Three Kings. We have been competitive in all of the games and adapted to a very typical reserves league in that you don’t know what sort of team you will face each week. A team can have a few first players included or turn up under strength due to losing players to their first team. We’ve always tried to respect each opponent we have faced. We currently

www.wsafc.org.nz July 2018 7

SEVILLA

have the best defence in the league conceding less than a goal a game. We haven’t scored more than we would’ve liked (not for want of trying or luck) but does reflect on our tactics of keeping games tight over the first 60 minutes. Key to this is the boys have been very flexible to playing different formations to match the opponent to to maximise who we have available on the day. Without a cup to keep us focused, we go into the last six games with second place our goal. Four of the six teams we play, we failed to beat first time round, so this will be our challenge and to prove to the senior committee we are the second best team in the club. Whilst the 2018 Reserves was set up to be independent of the first team, we have played some first team players and also encouraged under 19s and 17s players to train with us and get some game time where they can. It was great to see two regular reserves players, Nick Mann and Brendan Speakman, play for the first team in the recent Waitakere game. Our goalkeeper Alex McLean is also the reserve keeper for the first team and hopefully we’ll get to see him in action before the season is out. (Come on Zoro!!) Season highlight saw us gain revenge on Birkenhead who narrowly (ahem!) beat us in last years Reserves Cup final. It’s been great to have long time Geezers Ryan, Alex H, Nick, Brendan, Tom Mc and Jonny Reed play at a level they deserve too. Doug Robinson has been a great help as team manager and has dealt with his own kit and balls challenges admirably. I couldn’t do without him. Cheers Dougy.

It’s so rewarding as a coach and parent, seeing kids develop, learn and challenge themselves, especially against better opposition. Thanks to Andy, Matt and HPU coaches for the time and effort put in this season so far. We may have lost 4–1 to top the team (ESAFC Gold) in our grade but vast improvement from start of the season with a ‘double figure’ loss. The first goal Eastern Suburbs have conceded today was against us!

SPRINGS’ SUSTAINABILITY UPDATE OUR NEW CLUB RECYCLING AND ORGANIC COMPOST BINS HAVE BEEN A MASSIVE SUCCESS! They’ve significantly reduced the amount of rubbish needlessly going to landfill each week. And we’re no longer seeing messy, overflowing rubbish bins at Seddon Fields anymore either - hooray! It’s been an awesome effort by all club members who’ve gotten behind and supported this innovative project - we just might be the first football club in New Zealand to do it!

Fuji Xerox delivers market-leading document services and print solutions.

www.fujixerox.co.nz Complimenting McDonald’s local sponsorship of clubs like Western Springs AFC, a new national sponsorship has been agreed with New Zealand Football.

Building on the Small Whites and McDonald’s Skills Zone programmes, McDonald’s Junior Football cements McDonald’s position as a key supporter of junior football in New Zealand. McDonald’s is working with New Zealand Football to increase the number of young players registered with clubs around the country, and also providing additional resources to football development officers. 15,000 footballs will also be handed out to Kiwi kids through the season.

You’ll notice there are now bright new labels on all the bins around the turf to help people sort their own waste properly. Generally everyone is doing well and getting it right but please remind your teams and supporters that ALL takeaway coffee cups (and their lids) sold from the club cafe are eco-friendly and compostable (but NOT recyclable!) so please put them in the green compost bins after you’ve had your morning caffeine fix. If you bring one from a neighbouring cafe, take a moment to look up from the football action and check the lids and cups - some are compostable, some are recyclable, some are neither. So be sure to put them in the right bins please. This reduces a lot of work by club volunteers who sort and empty the bins each week.

Bayleys have continued to be a major sponsor of WSAFC so please make sure you support them if you are considering selling Bayleys are pleased to be able to offer all WSAFC members an opportunity to support their local club by way of a $1,500 donation for every property which is listed exclusively and sold by Bayleys Real Estate Ltd. If you’re thinking that this might be the time to sell, let’s make a time to discuss the possibilities.

THIS MONTH... This month is “Plastic Free July”, a national awareness campaign to reduce the use of single-use plastics. We can all do our bit by using reusable drink bottles and avoiding single use plastics where possible - the fish, whales and sea birds will thank you for it!

possession and shot after shot on goal, with the crossbar taking a hammering and the Nomads GK working overtime.

RESERVES UPDATE Like the First Team, the Reserves also had a new look this year.

We currently 8 July 2018 www.wsafc.org.nz

have the best defence in the league conceding less than a goal a game.

GRADE 10

SEVILLA It’s so rewarding as a coach and parent, seeing kids develop, learn and challenge themselves, especially against better opposition.

THIS MONTH... This month is “Plastic Free July”, a national awareness campaign to reduce the use of single-use plastics. We can all do our bit by using reusable drink bottles and avoiding single use plastics where possible - the fish, whales and sea birds will thank you for it!
