FROM THE COMMITTEE Hi Members, As we close the season for another year, we would like to say thanks to all the people who volunteered their time to make the club successful, including parents, coaches, managers and key members of the club. As a reminder, the club survives on volunteers, rather than paid employees and as the numbers in the club grows we need your continued help and support to bring football and enjoyment to the community, remember you are the club! The newsletter this month is based on the award winners at the Youth Prizegiving. We have looked to offer more recognition in the grades, especially in the 9th and 10th grades this season and I think this was well received. On a competitive level we continue to see strength in

the majority of grades and this is reflected in the number of division winners, tournament results through the year, and participation in Auckland Football’s FTC and NTC programs. This is an outcome of having the foundation of great facilities and a variety of programmes on offer. I hope overall you and your children enjoyed the season, continued friendships and carried on with a love of the game. As with other years, we will be offering summer football and holiday programmes in the off season and will keep you up to date on upcoming events and the start of the 2016 season! Regards The Junior Committee

Check out the latest Skill Zone tricks from McDonald’s. http://www.nzfootball.co.nz/juniors/ Filmed at our very own Seddon Fields, these tricks are awesome and learning them will help your overall ball control. Why not practise them over the school holidays and impress your coach at your next training session?!

You know what they say, “practice makes perfect”! www.wsafc.org.nz October 2015 21

MOST CONSISTENT FEMALE YOUTH 11th–13th Grade Awarded to SEINA FOLEY-OKANO

CHELSEA 13th

Seina has been a constant menace to opposition teams with her tight control of the ball and ability to dribble around players at will. This year she has brought into her game a determination and strength to close down opposition defences, putting pressure on them to make mistakes and allowing the team to defend high. Seina has scored numerous goals at crucial times this year with many of these neatly tucked into the corner of the net after she has turned the opposition defence inside out. Seina has been part of the AFF Federation Talent Centre for the last two years. She has consistently been in great form for the team and can be relied on to provide the energy, pace and enthusiasm.

MOST IMPROVED FEMALE YOUTH Awarded to CHARLOTTE TINSLEY

11th–13th Grade CHELSEA 13th

Charlotte joined Western Springs two years ago from Central, and has been a huge asset to the Chelsea girls team. Despite playing up a grade, she has been one of the stand out talents in the 13th Grade Premier division. Charlotte’s vision and ability to execute fantastic through balls, to take on and get around opposition players, and importantly to hit the byline and cut back great crosses, has provided the team with strong attacking options that keep the opposition guessing. She was accepted into the AFF Federation Talent Centre and has taken this opportunity to continue to develop. We are confident that Charlotte will continue to improve her game and promises to be a player to be reckoned with in the future.

MOST CONSISTENT FEMALE YOUTH 14th–17th Grade Awarded to FAYE BUSFIELD

BLACK SWANS 15th

The quintessential team member and a key player. That player every team needs at holding midfield – ever present, smart, fit, fast. Solid on defence but with great distribution skills in possession. So often in the right place at the right time. AFF FTC. Another outstanding season.

MOST IMPROVED FEMALE YOUTH Awarded to STELLA BENNETT

14th–17th Grade DRAGONS 15th

Stella began the season as a fringe player at the trial with a degree of raw talent, but without some of the finer skills of the other girls. Traditionally Stella had been an attacking midfielder or striker, but early in the season we started working with her to transition into a central defensive role. Not only was Stella prepared to make this transition, she (after a few early nervous moments for the coach!) has steadily improved into a reliable central defender, winning 4 match day awards, and helping the team to 5 clean sheets out of the last 8 games. We have had some significant improvers this season, and that Stella is, in my opinion, at the head of that group is a real credit to her improvement during the season. 22 October 2015 www.wsafc.org.nz

FEMALE YOUTH FAIR PLAY AWARD Awarded to VIOLA TRNSKI

PINK PANTHERS

Viola is the ultimate team player. She communicates well on the field and is a great distributer of the ball. She can often be heard calling to her team mates as she positions herself in space ‘here if you need me’. She is sometimes guilty of making one pass too many but this is only done in an effort share the ball around her team to make sure everyone gets a piece of the action.

FEMALE YOUTH WITH THE MOST HEART Awarded to CAITLIN WISHEART

DRAGONS 15th

Caitlin lives with her family in Titirangi, and had enrolled with Bay Olympic, only to learn very late they were unable to field a team. Caitlin, along with other affected Bay players, began training with WSAFC teams, uncertain as to whether she would make the Dragons team, and whether there would be anywhere for her to play. In the week before the season started, Caitlin made it successfully through the trial, and since then has been one of the most committed players, both to the team and to her overall improvement. She has only missed one match all season (in the middle of the school holidays), and has worked extremely hard to earn a consistent place in the team. Caitlin has been responsive to our coaching, and has been prepared to play in a number of different positions as the needs of the team have required. Caitlin has ‘toughed out’ the early season set-back, and would be a worthy winner of this award

MOST PROMISING FEMALE YOUTH GOALKEEPER Awarded to EDIE BALME

PINK PANTHERS 14th

Edie is a dedicated goalkeeper, always hungry to learn and upskill in the psychology of keeping. Fearless in the face of breakaway attackers Edie will hurl herself at the feet of the enemy and invariably win. She understands her role of communicating to the defence and is clear and decisive. She learns from her mistakes and has a strong desire to improve. Conceding a goal is like a stake to the heart.

MOST PROMISING FEMALE YOUTH DEFENDER Awarded to GENEVIEVE RYAN

BLACK SWANS 15th

Converted from wing to left back this season and has been the find of the season. Solid and brave in defence, but with the pace, fitness & skill to attack forward with great impact. AFF FTC and NTC trialist. An outstanding prospect. www.wsafc.org.nz October 2015 23

MOST PROMISING FEMALE YOUTH MIDFIELDER Awarded to LILY TAITIMU

BLACK SWANS 15th

Team captain and has been an outstanding leader both in attitude and on-field performance. The dominant midfielder in her league. Fast, super fit, extraordinary ball skills, the ultimate competitor who never gives up. (Not in AFF FTC as…) When not playing football is in training to represent NZ in Ice Speed Skating. Captain Fantastic.

MOST PROMISING FEMALE YOUTH ATTACKER Awarded to TAYLA O’BRIEN

BLACK SWANS 15th

Outstanding ball skills, pace and game intelligence. Superb team attitude. Highly versatile. A defenders nightmare – elusive, powerful finish with both left and right foot, but also able to lay on the killer pass. Golden boot yet again this season. AFF FTC and NTC trialist. A definite star of the future.

BEST FEMALE YOUTH GOALKEEPER Awarded to LUCIA BIRLEY

BLACK SWANS 15th

Horror start to her season when she badly fractured her finger at the trials needing surgery and 3 months out of goalkeeping/football. But took the opportunity to work on her outfield skills to great effect. Outstanding in the air, superb one-on-one, and brave. AFF FTC. A rising star.

BEST FEMALE YOUTH DEFENDER Awarded to ELLA NEIGHBOURS

WHITE STRIPES U17

Ella moved from right wing last year to right fullback and has never looked back since. She works tirelessly in her position and has maintained a consistent standard all season. She is strong, determined and fast and has foiled many a fast break and turned it into a counter attack. Her ability to bomb forward on the overlap has also created havoc and ended in goals being scored on more than one occasion. Ella is a great athlete and has a wonderful work ethic. She provides that composure that is vital for any defender and it is no coincidence that the only game we lost all season Ella was absent. 24 October 2015 www.wsafc.org.nz

BEST FEMALE YOUTH MIDFIELDER Awarded to MONIQUE BARNES

WHITE STRIPES U17

Monique has been a rock in the midfield and has lead by example. She has provided much needed grit and determination but also a touch of class with her feints and her disguised turns. While not pushing for scoring honours this year, Monique has been an enormous asset to her team as Captain and by just doing the simple things well in the middle of the park. She has played all season with the Women’s Reserves and has brought that level of professionalism to her game on Saturdays.

BEST FEMALE YOUTH ATTACKER Awarded to ZOE BROWN

WHITE STRIPES U17

Zoe has had an exceptional year and has literally kicked on from last years scoring frenzy. While not the fastest attacker Zoe has a composure and a determination with the ball at her feet to find a way to beat a player and to send in a killer cross or a thundering shot to rattle the keeper. Of the 37 goals we scored this season Zoe claimed 15 of them and was integral to at least another dozen. In a team full of attacking threat Zoe has had a great season and really found her mojo.

MOST PROMISING FEMALE YOUTH Awarded to MARGOT RAMSAY

WHITE STRIPES U17

Margot has a great ability to read the game and has creativity to burn. Her technical skill, work rate and energy make her a handful for any opposition. She has a bright future in the women’s game and I’m sure will be nudging National Selection in the coming years. Definitely one to watch.

FEMALE YOUTH PLAYER OF THE YEAR Awarded to ZOE BROWN

WHITE STRIPES U17

Over the last two years at Springs Zoe has put her everything into improving her game and developing to be the best player possible. The difference has been enormous. She has been a constant source of inspiration for her team mates and has been nothing but professional and a leader by example. Zoe has played as a regular starter in the Womens Reserves and also came off the bench for the Prems this season. Playing two games per weekend plus four trainings per week through the summer and the winter has not been easy but is now paying off for Zoe. A thoroughly deserving nomination. www.wsafc.org.nz October 2015 25

MOST CONSISTENT MALE YOUTH Awarded to MALACHI FA’ALOGO-LILO

11th–13th Grade CRUZEIRO 13th

26 October 2015 www.wsafc.org.nz

MALE YOUTH FAIR PLAY AWARD 11th–17th Grade Awarded to JAMIE LAING

PALMEIRAS 13th

Jamie is a quiet and unassuming young man to most people. On the field he is has a competitive nature yet shows amazing understanding and empathy for players in his team as well as opposition. He has captain the 13’s Palmeiras as has been a good example of training disciple and commitment to football. If the meaning of Fair Play is true, this boy deserves it.

MALE YOUTH WITH THE MOST HEART Awarded to MATTHEW ADYE

TORNADOES 15th

He plays out right midfield and is a great attacker but also defends just as good, he never gives in, has got a massive ticker on him, he he just missed out on player of the year for us.

MOST PROMISING MALE YOUTH GOALKEEPER Awarded to BLAKE SHADBOLT

CRUZEIRO 13th

Blake was new to Springs this year and has a had a fantastic season. His personal development and professional attitude to his role as keeper has been integral to the success of the Cruzeiro performances this season. A fearless shot stopper and a calming influence. While there will always be room for improvement, Blake definitely promises great things in the years ahead.

BEST MALE YOUTH GOALKEEPER Awarded to TOM RUSSELL

METRO 16th

Playing up a Grade in the 16 Metro competition has meant a tough but rewarding season for Tom. Against very good opposition he has continued to develop and expand his excellent Goalkeeping and distribution skills under the guidance of Matt Munford. He is a very committed and passionate Keeper and he continues to pull off fine saves. However with his taller frame and quicker reflexes, he has learnt to really dominate his box whether the ball is in the air or on the ground. www.wsafc.org.nz October 2015 27

BEST MALE YOUTH ATTACKER Awarded to SEAN ATHERTON

METRO 16th

Sean has enjoyed a very good start to his Western Springs career with 10 terrific goals in the 16th Metro competition. He has a lethal left foot, is a constant threat to opposition defences and also works tirelessly off the ball to create counter attacking opportunities for his team. He is an excellent footballer and was rewarded recently with a start for the Under 19’s.

BEST MALE YOUTH DEFENDER Awarded to SOLOMAN TAPU

FIREBOLTS 13th

Solomon’s composure under pressure and ability to communicate to his team mates positively means he leads the team by example and sets the standard required. This is demonstrated with the Firebolts defensive record being the strong and assisting the team to earn promotion into Conference.

JAVA GIRLS Winners of 9th Grade Nationals Plate – 3rd Place in Tournament A squad of ten girls were selected in early August to form Java, the 9th Grade Girls Team that would represent Western Springs at the 9th Grade Nationals at Three Kings United on 26, 27 & 28 September. Java went into the tournament not sure how we would go but quietly hopeful we would do okay after coming runners up in the 9th Grade Fencibles tournament in August and 6th at the Eastern Suburbs 10th Grade tournament earlier in September. Java started very strongly convincingly winning their three opening games on Saturday, including a game against ‘arch rivals’ Eastern Suburbs.

Poppy Tingey – unfortunately missed the tournament due to illness Big thanks to Ange Southgate for being awesome as Java’s manager and also to all the parents for their enthusiastic support during the tournament and in the weeks leading up to the Nationals!

Day 2 on Sunday was a lot harder, not only because Java had four 40 minute games but also because three of those games were against very strong teams – TKU’s top team, Forest Hill & Fencibles. We lost to TKU & Forest Hill, the eventual winners & runners up of the tournament, in very tight games but beat Fencibles & Hibiscus Coast. The tension on the side line during 3 of the games on Sunday was obvious and both coach and parents were hoarse! Day 3 on Monday couldn’t have started better with a convincing 5-0 victory against TKU’s 2nd team to boost confidence. This left Java comfortably in 3rd place behind TKU 1st team & Forest Hill and into the Plate Final (3rd v 4th play-off). Java dominated the Final with Fencibles having only 1 or 2 chances, but with a score line of just 1-0 it was a nerve racking 40 minutes! The Coach and parents were incredibly proud of the girls for not only winning the Final but also for the way they played the Final – they were determined, they showed great skills, they passed the ball around and played some lovely football! A huge congratulations to all the Java girls on winning the Plate – Ania Adams, Anya Stephan, Carrie Southgate, Charli Dunn, Elisa Joint-Rotondo, Gemma Kelly, Lucy Irwin, Pallas Baker and Sienna Vercauteren. Special mention must also go to: Carrie Southgate – Tournament ‘Golden Boot’ Winner for the girls competition Anya Stephen – Player of the Day Saturday Carrie Southgate – Player of the Day Sunday Ania Adams – Player of the Day Monday Charli Dunn – Player of the Plate Final

NERO TAKE TOP SPOT AT BIRKENHEAD The muscles were aching, the clothes full of sweat, they were emotionally and physically spent – and that was just the parents on the side-lines as they watched Nero win a thrilling penalty shoot-out battle to take home the silverware at Birkenhead. Continuing their tradition from last year of winning tournaments on Mothers and Father’s Day, Nero took out the 10th Grade Championship Cup at Birkenhead – bringing one home for the dad’s! A popular tournament with 24 strong teams competing, Nero got off to a fantastic start beating AFF rivals TKU – Chamberlain 2-0. Birkenhead Brazil was the next pool match and another 2-0 victory as Nero dominated the midfield with a classy display of passing and one and two touch football. Next on the list was Waitakere, a physical team who never let up. Nero’s dominance in defence and determination to win the ball combined with attacking accuracy and some rocket shooting bought home a 4-0 win. Hibiscus Coast Maradona (the HBC second team) were never a threat with the Nero boys pace and power making sure of a clinical 5-0 win. The hardest pool round came last with Forest Hill Milford Torino matching Nero in both skill, passing and determination. The final score a 1-1 draw a fair reflection of both teams efforts and a good challenge to Nero as they hit the knock out rounds. The semi-final match saw Nero play Eastern Suburbs Lilywhites – a foe Nero love to beat. The boys took an early 1-0 lead and were unlucky not to increase that by a couple after a number of shots went awry. Nero definitely outwitted, outplayed and outlasted their foes and that 1-0 victory was truly sweet. The champs final saw Nero playing Birkenhead Barcelona – the home team favourites and a very technical and skilled team. The home crowd took their position on the club house balcony and gave plentiful vocal support

32 October 2015 www.wsafc.org.nz

to their boys. Not intimidated, Nero held off an early onslaught by Birkenhead who were playing the better passing game but had underestimated the dogged defence of Nero and the boys never die attitude. We held our breath as many Birkenhead shots were thwarted last second or saved by our goalie and we made it to the half time break 0-0. The lads regrouped during the break and came out and played much better football finding combination passing both down the wings and through the middle, our defenders dug in and could not be broken down. The final whistle saw a 0-0 draw and weary lads on both teams were not relishing extra time (golden goal). However, with both teams standing tough through extra time we were still all tied up as the final whistle blew and onto penalties. The ref then set up an extremely interesting penalty challenge, with the kids both kicking into a very strong wind and 12 paces back instead of 7 paces back. Player after player from both teams came to the penalty spot and missed! Even those players who have never missed penalties struggled to find the back of the net with the wind taking top corner kicks way over the bar and low balls being easily saved by keepers. After 5 penalties a piece – yep you guessed it the scores were tied 1-1. Just when we thought we were bunking in for the night and at penalty shot 9 – Nero finally got a break through from a magic strike from Will Smith. Big respect for a fantastic Birkenhead team but victory was AWESOME! Congratulations to the boys who only conceded 2 goals for the whole tournament (including penalties)! Also a special thank you from Nero to our fantastic coach Wayne Young, our dedicated parent helpers and to the brains trust of the day Neil Emblem and Maurie Wasi who supported the boys the whole day.

9TH AND 10TH GRADE TOURNAMENT On Sunday 20 September, 40 teams (400 kids) plus coaches, managers and supporters descended on Seddon Fields for our Springs 9th and 10th grade tournament. We held this tournament for the first time (in a while at least) last year and the success of that event made it even more popular this year! Throughout both grades we had 5 Springs teams competing Vitesse and Forza in 9th grade and Nero, Blanco and our All Stars in house team in 10th grade. Throughout the day there was some extraordinary football being displayed from some very talented kids. We congratulate all of the teams for playing fairly, audaciously and in good spirit. Also a very BIG thank you to our tournament organisers Jane Gold, Ange Southgate, Kate Beddoe and Gary Dalhousie. Many hours were put into the planning and logistics of this event and it went extremely smoothly adding to the great reputation that Springs already has for quality football events. Winners were: 9TH GRADE Winner Championship Fencibles Runners Up Championship WSAFC Vitesse Winner Plate Birkenhead Blazers Runners Up TKU Thunderbirds 10TH GRADE Winner Championship ESAFC Lilywhites Runners Up Championship Ellerslie Red Winner Plate Onehunga Sports Phoenix Runners Up Plate Hibiscus Coast Cafu Winner Bowl Bucklands Beach Rangers Runners Up Bowl Onehunga Sports Lions Vitesse had a big challenge to try to retain our home tournament, won so admirably by our sister team Nero last year. But the club is lucky to have another good crop of 9th graders coming through in Nero’s footsteps, and the Vitesse boys were looking forward to a fun day of football. First up in our pool was Beachlands Maraetai. We were on form from the start and played some really nice football that culminated in goals to George (2), 34 October 2015 www.wsafc.org.nz

Will (2), Max M and Freddie. A really pleasing aspect was that the boys started to pass the ball backwards confidently under pressure to our defenders and keeper, which is something we have been working on. Another highlight was a superb long through ball from Max M, between two defenders and right into the path of George, who couldn’t miss. A pass from heaven! Final score: 6-1 Next up was Bay Olympic. This was a one sided affair, but it was nice to get the ball in the back of the net plenty of times and see lots of smiles on the boys faces. Carlo was on fire with four goals, and Ari and Will also hit well deserved hat-tricks. A highlight was a couple of lovely cross field ‘switch’ balls from Freddie. Final score: 12-1 Our last pool game was v Waitakere. They had a very physical style of play and were hard to break down. We played good quality football though. But for some really good goalkeeping, Carlo could have easily had a hat-trick before half time. As it stood, we went into the break locked at 0-0. In the second half we continued to create the better chances, and finally the breakthrough came. From a corner, Will lofted a sweet ball into the penalty area that found Theo who headed home our deserved winner. Good stuff Theosaurus! Final score: 1-0 Championship Quarter Final v Ellerslie Despite being a bit flat, the boys did enough to get the job done. Our defence really stepped up in this game, with some excellent blocks, jockeying and tackling by Ari, Max, Monty and George, followed by some very good passing upfield. Will scored a cracking goal to break the deadlock, but Ellerslie managed to claw their way back with an equaliser. Carlo finished them off by hitting home a really good goal that was several team passes in the making. Freddie then ran from half way to latch onto a long Monty clearance and score, only to be pulled up for off-side. A tight call! Final score: 2-1 Championship Semi-Final v Eastern Suburbs Lillywhites The team kept up our excellent record against one of our main rivals. Carlo once again finished off a good team move with a great shot, and Will expertly slotted a second one home, served up to him on a plate by ‘Freddinho’. Suburbs got one back, then

almost equalised with a fierce shot to the top corner, but Fenton lept high and palmed it over the cross bar in a save Peter Cech would have been stoked with. Monty pulled off a Rooney-like bicycle kick in the final seconds that went pretty close. The whistle blew and we’d made it to the final. Final score: 2-1 Championship Final v Fencibles We played some really good football in this game, probably our best of the day, and were unlucky not to get more out of it. Our defence stood strong for most of the game and our midfielders and strikers worked really hard, while Monty and Fenton both did a great job in goal. It was a really tight game, with not much in it. It was 0-0 at half time, but our tireless effort and commitment was rewarded early in the second with a brave goal from Carlo, who received a nice pass from George on the left and smashed the ball in from close range under the challenge of the keeper. But, despite our best efforts, we couldn’t quite hold on to our lead and Fencibles managed to get two good late shots on goal, and that was it. So close, but yet so far...Final score: 1-2 Our stats: Played 6, won 5, lost 1, 25 goals for, 6 against. Not too shabby! The boys played some lovely attacking football during the day and they really enjoyed the tournament (apart from the last few minutes!). Believe it or not this was their 8th tournament of the season. They have won two championship finals, been runner-up twice, third once, won two plate finals, and come second in another - what a team! They are nothing but consistent and I am extremely proud of the way they play their football; with good technical ability, structural awareness and, most importantly, with plenty of passion and joy. Go Vitesse!

OUR GOLD SPONSOR JEREMY SUTTON SHARES HIS HIGHLIGHTS OF THE SEASON Hi everyone, Well the last few games have been just fantastic. The kids are really playing as a team and have all developed so much over the season. Well done 8th grade Turtles! Noah has been working on his left foot and has had a few coaching sessions with Sam Burfoot. The focus of one-on-one coaching really produces results, particularly when it’s with one of the heroes of the club! Sam has a fun laid-back style which the kids can relate to. Noah loved the drills and scoring goals against Sam at the end of each session. I highly recommend it. I’ve been down to watch the First Team a few times. Good to see they’re always well

supported, and there’s a great atmosphere at the games. All in all, we’ve really enjoyed the season and getting to know more club members. A big thanks to all the volunteers who give so much of their time, in particular to our awesome coach Paul and manager Helen, who have done a brilliant job for the Turtles and made this a fun season for our team. I hope you’ve had a great season too. Enjoy this warm weather and we’ll see you at summer soccer.

Cheers Jeremy
