2018 JUNIOR AND YOUTH TRIALS

SPORTS PHYSIO ACC & Private provider • Education • Prevention • Treatment • Rehabilitation

It wasn’t too long after the final tournaments of 2017 finished that we started to think about trials for our junior and youth teams for 2018. With over 1800 junior and youth members at Springs, organising teams for everybody takes a fair bit of time! We’re very fortunate in that we have many volunteers who give up their time to help us with this. Our wonderful grade coordinators help to raise awareness and organise registrations for trials, and on trials day ensure that each of the players is ready to go and bibbed up appropriately! We are always in need of referees to help with the smooth running of trials and by keeping games flowing they allow the assessors the time to focus on watching the skills shown by the players.

Our trials for 13th to 19th grade Metro and Conference teams begin in December, with trials for other mixed teams from 8th to 12th grade and all of our girls teams starting early in February. All open trials will be advertised on our website, with additional trials being shared directly with trialists using the contact details supplied when you register for trials. The links to register for Metro and Conference trials are available on our website while registration links for our February trials will be online later this month. If you have any queries about trials then you can contact me on fdm@wsafc.org.nz. Thanks

In 2018 we will have teams competing in mixed football from 9th to 19th grades and in girl’s football from 9th to 20th grades. With AFF introducing a new grade for females to link youth and

P18 9TH GR AD E UN ITE D TH RE E KI NG S UR NAM ENT NATI ONALS TO Our three Springs teams experienced a few ups and downs during three great days of football with all teams playing some super football and showcasing their talents in some mixed playing conditions. Our Sevilla girls team had a great start to the tournament with three wins on day one before coming up against some tougher opposition and finishing 7th – a great outcome considering half the team were from the 8th grade! The Kaha team had a great tournament and played some great football during the three days with some super skills on display. They scored 13 goals on day one and 16 on day two in winning five games from 6 as the goals were shared around the team. The Championship quarter final beckoned and Kaha shaded a close game 2–1 against Christchurch United – a

great start to day three. The semi final pitched them against Fencibles, a team they had played earlier in the tournament. In a close game with defences very much on top, Fencibles scored the only goal of the game during the second half. A great performance to finish in the final four of the Championship – well done Kaha! Mana were involved in three close games on day one but triumphed in two of those, demonstrating some great teamwork. After drawing day two’s first game, Mana then scored 19 goals in their final two games to qualify for the Championship quarter finals – a great achievement and reward for their efforts so far. In the quarter final, Mana put in a great performance but eventually went out, losing 2–0 to the beaten finalists from Eastern Suburbs.

NAM ENT

Each of our teams enjoyed the challenge of lots of game time over 3 days played largely in some beautiful spring weather. Liguero, got off to a tricky start with a few new players taking time to settle during a defeat to Bay Olympic. They they went on to win two and draw one of their group matches which put them into the Bowl Knockout where they beat Hibiscus Coast 4–0 and then East Coast Bays 2–0 setting them up for a re-match with Bay Olympic in the Bowl final. In a great team performance, Liguero won 3–0, entertaining the crowds under blue skies with some fine attacking football and thoroughly deserved their victory – Bowl Winners for 2017! Our girl’s 10th grade Fiorentina team got off to a great start with a 3–1 win against Ellerslie and looked well set for a good 3 days. The challenge picked up later in the group stages and Fiorentina despite having lots of possession in games couldn’t find another winning goal. The girl’s defended with great determination throughout the tournament but had found goals a little bit harder to come by. They had a great tournament experience and bowed out in the Plate Semi-final losing a close game 1–0 against Ellerslie again. It didn’t dampen the spirits of the girls too much and they were all smiles after a great weekend!

The Rebels were in a tough group against some other teams that they knew well. In a mixed first day they won one, drew one, lost one which set them up for a challenging second day! The team arrived full focused and amassed four wins and a total of 31 goals during five wins from their seven group matches. In the Championship quarter final, the Rebels beat a strong Birkenhead team 3–1 which gave them a couple of hours rest before their semi-final against Fencibles. The Rebels saved their best performance of the tournament for a fiercely contested semi-final, going a goal down but bouncing straight back to equalise. As the game headed into the final five minutes, Fencibles managed to go ahead for the second time and in their 10th game, the Rebel’s energy tanks were empty and the referee blew his whistle with the Rebels finishing in the tournaments top four – a great achievement!

THE NOVEMBER 2017 EVERGREENS ‘SUMMER’ TRIVIA QUIZ NIGHT WAS ANOTHER SUCCESS, TO MIRROR THE PREVIOUS FOUR. Many of the 60 players enjoyed a laugh, a scream and a tear. Team “Flowery Twots”, who have close connections to WS Mens Steamboats and our Marketing officer, again took to the podium for first place with a laugh and a scream. But Team “Smart Arses”, who have connection to the organising team, plundered to the bottom and shed a few tears. The Evergreens club culture and welfare focus received solid support and the bank account was boosted by another several hundred dollars. We had tremendous support from the sponsors: Score Sportswear (Lotto), Peter Baker Transport (PBT), Warner Music, Ebos Healthcare, and Scott Shepherd Harley Trips. Alex and Mandy Flood (WS Steamboats) took out the “Scott Shepherd Harley Trips” auction. Mandy was last seen, with arms locked around Scott, cruising State Highway 16, with 100 riders, to an un-named pub near Kumeu. April 2018 will showcase our 5th quiz night. Many thanks to contributor “QWizard” Regards The WS Evergreens Club 10 December 2017 www.wsafc.org.nz

TESTING TIMES AT THE

NEIL EMBLEN ACADEMY Over the last few weeks attendees to the Neil Academy have been put to their paces in the annual Fitness Test. The players are measured (height and weight) and are then tested on their jumping and sprinting – we leave our favourite, the ‘endurance test’ to the end! Well done to all players!

2018 JUNIOR AND YOUTH TRIALS It wasn’t too long after the final tournaments of 2017 finished that we started to think about trials for our junior and youth teams for 2018. We are always in need of referees to help with the smooth running of trials and by keeping games flowing they allow the assessors the time to focus on watching the skills shown by the players.

senior football – 17th to 20th grade – it gives females across four grades, the opportunity to play with friends.

9TH G R AD E D E T I N U S G N TH R E E KI T N E M A N R U NATI O NALS TO Our three Springs teams experienced a few ups and downs during three great days of football with all teams playing some super football and showcasing their talents in some mixed playing conditions. The Championship quarter final beckoned and Kaha shaded a close game 2–1 against Christchurch United

Liguero action shot 18 December 2017 www.wsafc.org.nz

– a great start to day three.

10TH G R AD E N O RWE ST

T N E M A N R U NATI O NALS TO Each of our teams enjoyed the challenge of lots of game time over three days played largely in some beautiful spring weather. Our girl’s 10th grade Fiorentina team got off to a great start with a 3–1 win against Ellerslie and looked well set for a good three days.

Fiorentina action shot
