MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE CHAIRMAN And the 2016 season kicks off. I’d like to extend a really warm welcome to all of our members, but particularly those new to the club and those little ones just starting out on their football careers. I hope the season brings you all lots of joy, great goals, good memories and a few new friends. A real issue for the club is the congestion on Meola Road, especially on Saturday and Sunday mornings. This is a very busy thoroughfare and we strongly encourage all parents to please avoid parking on Meola Road due to the dangers.

P6

Walking, cycling and even the bus is far more pleasant than parking and crossing Meola Road. If you do need to drive, then please consider parking in the Western Springs College carpark on Motions Road or in the large metalled carpark above Field 3 which can also be accessed from Motions Road (where the trams exit MOTAT). The walk is only brief and we really want to keep our little ones safe. All the best for the season

The Evergreens Club, is delighted to announce a football community support package. Junior club parent, Mrs Robyn Challenger took up the offer of the Evergreens Club grants process and submitted a compelling story, of brothers Ayub and Masud Sayid. They have been side line supporters and friends of Robyns kids teams for a couple of years, anxious to become members, but unable to make the transition. The Evergreens Club and contributor, the Junior committee, liked the story and gave it the big stamp of approval. Junior club co-ordinator Gaz Dalhousie arranged team placements to WS and WS Jedi’s respectively, while Tracy Cunnington, Joanne Powell and Steve Wildsmith worked away with Robyn to complete the package of fees and full WS Lotto playing uniform.

So Game One on the Friday against Eastern Suburbs,(the eventual winners), was a tough assignment, with positions and combinations still to be worked through.

Playing on the worst of the pitches, Field 6, didn’t help matters either. While Springs had a strong team on paper and should have at least been able to reach the Cup round in theory it would prove to be a lot harder in practice. Build up and preparation for this tournament hit a speed bump when the normal coach Geoff Brogan, suffered a cardiac arrest in January. Stand-in coach, Grant Ramsay took the reins and kept the girls on track with trainings and trials and looking after the admin side (manager’s role). Geoff recovered in time to help Grant on the sideline for the entire weekend of the tourney but it was not an ideal buildup understandably. Many of these

club teams include National Rep players as well as ASB league and NRFL Premier players so sharing training time with their other commitments becomes a juggling act for coaches. Springs currently have Ashleigh Emery our goalkeeper as the only U17 Rep player and we also have a number of first team players in the squad. This meant that trainings were often without a number of key players. Come the tournament weekend, Springs had organized and enjoyed a number of friendlies but had not yet had the full squad playing or training

ES won that game 3-0 and Springs were pleased to have not conceded a goal in the second half but were outclassed by a very organized and strong

THE BOYS HAD A PRETTY SUCCESSFUL TOURNAMENT FINISHING 3RD OVERALL WE HAD A GOOD START GOING THROUGH UNBEATEN ON THE FIRST DAY WITH THREE GOOD WINS.

The second day saw us finishing the pool stage top of the group and not conceding a solitary goal. The day started with a difficult game v FC Twenty who had not lost a game either. We scored a couple of well constructed team goals. The quarter finals drew us against Cambridge who we accounted for quite comfortably after a shaky start conceding an early penalty which thankfully our GK Bradley Williams saved! We went on to win 2-0 Going into a tough semi final game v eventual winners

Birkenhead the boys were confident having still not conceded a goal. Unfortunately that record was soon broken as we conceded a penalty in the first five minutes of the game! The boys did extremely well to come back against a physically bigger team and again construct a superb equalizer. The game went to extra time and we eventual list 2-1 with a couple of minutes to go just running out of steam in the end.

Taller brother Ayub and Masud are snapped smiling, after presentation of their kit.

THE ACFC U17 TOURNAMENT IS RENOWNED AS THE FLAGSHIP YOUTH TOURNAMENT OF THE YEAR. IT’S ALWAYS A FABULOUS TOURNAMENT TO BE A PART OF AND THE CLUB NEVER LOOKS BETTER THAN WHEN THE TOURNAMENT COMES TO TOWN. together until the actual week of the tournament.

12 April 2015 2016 www.wsafc.org.nz

club teams include National Rep players as well as ASB league and NRFL Premier players so sharing training time with their other commitments becomes a juggling act for coaches.

Suburbs side bristling with National Rep players including Grace Jale and Jacqui Hand. Game Two was against a physical Waimakariri side on the hallowed No.1. Despite an improved performance and a home ground advantage, Springs went down 0-2 and were still without a goal despite a host of chances. Things were starting to look tougher. Game Three brought a much needed victory, 1-0 over Dunedin Technical with a goal to Tatjana Simmons. But again this game was a lot closer than it should have been and could have gone the other way a number of times in the 2nd half. On the Saturday, Springs took another unexpected loss 0-3 to FC Twenty in Game Four and coach Grant Ramsay was looking to make some radical changes to try to get the girls into a scoring mood.

Game Five was against the much fancied TKU side that won last year and featured another clutch of rep players including Hannah Blake. Springs conceded 3 goals in the first half and then held TKU for the second and deserved to have a couple of goals themselves. But this was not their day nor their tournament. Still, this game was their finest performance of the tournament and drew a measure of praise from the opposition and spectators despite the one sided scoreline. In previous tournaments Springs have twice won the Bowl. The loss to TKU meant that they would now only be contesting for the Plate against Stop out in the semi final. This game was won easily 2-0 as WS finally found scoring form with Tatjana claiming a second for the tournament and Margot Ramsay snatching another.

But the final for the Plate would be another missed opportunity as Springs went 1-0 up in the first 10 minutes with a lovely goal set up by Shania Heath’s long range shot and finished by Tatjana tidying up on the rebound. Despite the early lead a determined effort from Dunedin Technical was rewarded with two goals by the end of normal time and Springs had let the Plate slip from their grip with a 1-2 loss to finish the weekend off. The tournament was a great showpiece and a fantastic learning opportunity for the younger players in the squad. Katjana Grgecevich, Genevieve Ryan, Faye Busfield, Margot Ramsay, Ashleigh Emery, Hayley Miller, Nova Peterson and Becky Gillespie will all be back to fight for another chance to win that elusive Cup for Springs with valuable experience under their belts.

We went on to win 2-0 Going into a tough semi final game v eventual winners 14 14 April April 2015 2016 www.wsafc.org.nz www.wsafc.org.nz

The 3rd/4th playoff v Ellerslie was a chance to play some of our players that perhaps didn’t

get a lot of game time during the pool/quarter and semi final stages. The boys came out 1-0 winners to take our 3rd place

A great result considering only 5 or 6 of the squad can’t play in next years tournament. Young players Oscar Browne and Oscar Spragg deserve special mention as both produced some outstanding football which was beyond their tender age of 15. The older players such as Troy Tapsell and Dane Schnell also deserve a mention. (Dane is currently starting for First team until he got injured last week

verses ECB) Bradley Williams deserves mention for conceding only 1 goal all tournament although the it was a team effort. Overall pleased with the effort and the attempt to play good football on at times not great fields and against physically older opposition.

Best Result This Season 1-0 in Round 2 vs WSAFC Jones - It was a tough and very even game which could have gone either way. They put the ball in the back of the net in the first half but it was ruled offside and we took the lead during the second half through a perfectly executed freekick from Dave van Etchen (last season’s top scorer) over the wall from just outside the box. We held on to the slender lead for the rest of the game to keep our 100% record for the season.
