April Holiday Programmes The April school holidays brought a sudden break to our in-house and AFF competitions just as our teams were starting to build up some momentum. However, it did allow our Springs kids the chance to enjoy three days of Neil’s and Rico’s Holiday Programmes! We were blessed with great weather which allowed well over 200 kids the chance to work on their football skills and enjoy the company of friends of all ages. Our younger kids were also able to learn from some older than usual role models; four

of our older boys gave up three days of their time to support and encourage our youngest kids. A big thanks to Josh Aitken, Seb Bernard, Tadhg Collie and Seb Smith! The kids enjoyed driving school; run the gauntlet; and sharks and islands, but ultimately they all looked forward to the end of day tournaments and further chances to show off their Winston Reid defending and Myer Bevan finishing!

MENS FIRST TEAM’S START TO THE SEASON It has been a very solid start to life in Division 1 with 8 wins from 8 games. We have used a good mix of Senior players and youngsters to find a better balance than in previous seasons. Our top goalscorer is Adam Dickinson with 8 goals in 6 games with George Debenham closely behind with 7 goals from 6 games .

Neil Emblen said in a short statement:

‘Hard work and dedication pays off. Myer is a great example to our junior and youth players. This is only the start of his journey though and we wish him lots of luck’. Neil is currently working with Myer with NZ at the U20s World Cup.

Our campaign in the Chatham Cup starts this weekend with a trip to Cambridge. I would like a good cup run if possible and as confidence is high due to our league position I see no reason why we can’t have one. Scott Sellar has been very good in the midfield area and has also chipped in with five goals . Defensively Elliot Munford and the defenders are limiting goals to less than one per game and this was an aim at the start of the season. All the players have made a good impression and most of the squad have had an opportunity to get amongst the action.

Liam Mulrooney and Brian Shelley will be taking the team for the next 3/4 games as I’m in Korea for the U20 Men’s World Cup so please get down and support them and help keep the winning habit and momentum going. All the best and I look forward to another positive report in the next edition.

WHAT TO DO PROUD IF A PLAYER GETS AN ANKLE INJURYFOR TO BE PHYSIOTHERAPIST OF CHOICE One of the most common injuries in football is an ankle sprain. WESTERN SPRINGS AFC Players can ‘roll’ or twist their ankle changing direction or in a contact situation like a tackle.

Usually the ligaments on the outside of the ankle are stretched or torn, and sometimes we can Justin on 021 673 732 www.backtoyourfeet.health.nz injure bone or cartilidge too. Contact Clinic is located upstairs at Western Springs Pavilion, Seddon Fields, 108 Meola Rd SIGNS OF AN ANKLE SPRAIN Usually the player feels pain in the area they have injured at the time they roll or twist the ankle. Sometimes the pain can be to the point they do not feel like they can continue playing. Sometimes swelling can be immediate or can take a few hours to develop. A pop is not always a sign that you have broken a bone or ruptured a ligament. Usually, after a sprain you will lose some range of movement at the ankle and it will be painful to weightbear WHAT TO DO IF A PLAYER GETS AN ANKLE INJURY ON THE FIELD Your team should have a delegated person to run on and assist players when they are injured. When they run on to assist the player they should ask the player where they feel pain, and you can use some cold spray or even cold water to help give them some pain relief. Ask the player to move the ankle in all directions. If the ankle is swollen already and the player is not able or willing to move the ankle in all directions then they may need assistance to leave the field. It is not a good sign if the player is not willing to put weight through the ankle, as one of the indications for the need for an xray is if a player is unable to take more than four steps at the time of injury (and still unable to take four steps when they get to the physio or Accident and Emergency department.

SIX FROM SPRINGS

MEN’S U20 SHIRT PRESENTATION CEREMONY

If they player is able to move the ankle comfortably, and is confident to stand on their ankle then they should walk to the sideline, taking the opportunity to drink some of the ‘magiç’ water that helped reduce the pain in their ankle! They can test their ability to jog, hop and change direction on the sideline and if they are confident to continue and are moving well can join the game when ttthe referee allows them to return. RICED MANAGEMENT After an ankle injury the best management is to Rest, Ice, Compress, Elevate and get a Diagnosis from a registered health professional. Ice can be applied for approximately 15 minutes every couple of hours for the first 48 hours. Compression can be achieved using an elastic bandage or tubigrip. The sooner the athlete can be assessed the better so they can start their rehabilitation. STRENGTHENING

www.wsafc.org.nz May 2017 11

2 May 2017 www.wsafc.org.nz

To reduce the risk of ankle injuries and to rehabilitate from an ankle injury athletes can use a theraband which is a stretchy band made of latex (we also stock hypoallergenic bands). Using the resistance against the tension in the band you can build the strength up in the muscles around the ankle. 12 May 2017 www.wsafc.org.nz

STRENGTHENING To reduce the risk of ankle injuries and to rehabilitate from an ankle injury athletes can use a theraband which is a stretchy band made of latex (we also stock hypoallergenic bands). Using the resistance against the tension in the band you can build the strength up in the muscles around the ankle. 12 May 2017 www.wsafc.org.nz

End stage proprioception exercises

Theraband exercise PROPRIOCEPTION RETRAINING Proprioception is the sense we have which allows us to know where our body is in the space around is. We have receptors in our muscles and ligaments that tell us how much tension they are under, which our brains can interpret to help ensure we have accurate movement, Some of these receptors can be damaged when re injure the ankle and so retraining them is important, this may help prevent ankle injuries too. Proprioception training can be started on a hard surface by standing on the injured leg and seeing how long it takes before you have to put the other foot down. Progress by closing eyes, or doing it on a softer surface, like an cushion or air cushion. These exercises can be progressed to where the player is standing on the air cushion and volleying or heading a football. STRAPPING Strapping or taping the ankle can help reduce the risk of re-injuring the ankle. Get in touch if you would like us to show you how to tape your ankle Depending on the severity of the ankle sprain players may be able to continue playing or they may take months to fully recover. Either way it is a good idea to get a accurate diagnosis and a good rehabilitation plan in place and Back To Your Feet Physio that’s what we do!
