Goal of the season so far: Myer Bevan scored a fantastic flying volley against Central United. Buzz of the season so far: Myer Bevan being named in the Nike Academy in the UK this week. Myer epitomises a player hungry to succeed and he continues to push himself with great work ethic and superb quality. Well done Myer!

Highlight of the season so far: Our first half performance against Central United. Top drawer 45 minutes of play.

One to watch out for award so far: Connor Probert was on fire before he strained his quad. He is back fit again now and will be looking to have a superb last four or five games before leaving for Kentucky University in June on a Scholarship.

Unluckiest player award so far: Unfortunately, Dylan DeJong and James Debenham both endured season ending injuries prior to the season even starting. Both great lads who are both now helping in coaching roles at the club. Hopefully the rest of the players stay fit and healthy from now on!

As expected the league is very close with no weak teams and every game we play being a very tough contest. We need to learn from our mistakes quickly and be more resilient in our mindset and man up physically better than we have done in some games.

New signing of the season so far: With such a young side, the addition of Brian Shelley has been great in the games he has played. Brian is a very experienced player and a good bloke who will pass on his experience in the correct way to all the younger players, especially the defenders.

We currently sit 9th.

Stand up and be counted award so far goes to: the baby faced assassin, Scott Sellar. He is really looking the goods in midfield with his combative displays and is leading by example. Comeback of the year so far: Saturday’s great comeback against unbeaten Glenfield Rovers. 3–1 down at half time the boys rallied against a more

I will make sure that we work hard to gain the points we need to not only just stay up in the Premier League but to try and improve on last seasons finishing position of 9th. Thanks to everyone who has been at the games supporting. Our young team is exciting to watch, but are still learning about senior football at this level so we need all that support and more. Yours in football.

Portland, Oregon, USA, and then will spend the remaining six months to a year playing against other teams in Europe. Myer’s goal is to be scouted and signed by a professional club while in Europe and continue to pursue his dream of playing football for a living!

Five weeks ago Myer Bevan won the NZ leg of the 2016 Nike Most Wanted event – a competition to find the best non-professional under-20 youth players in the world. Liam Mulrooney (from Springs) urged Myer to apply, and within two weeks he’d won the event, beating over 200 kids from around NZ.

We are immensely proud of Myer – for not just being an amazing footballer, but for being one of the nicest boys around.

Myer then jumped on a plane to Paris where 42 winners from around the world congregated – boys from Belgium, Poland, Japan, England, France, Germany, Israel, Australia. They met in Clairefontaine, 55 mins drive from Paris, at the French Football Federation’s National Academy Centre, and trialed for three days, being tested on every aspect of their game. The final day was held on Sunday 1 May, with each of the three trialist teams playing each other, and then each of the three teams playing a 30 minute stint against the incumbent Nike Academy team. Myer was the joint top scorer in those trial games, coming off the bench in the final game to slot a penalty and drill home another goal (he missed a third by lashing it against the cross bar!). Together with 11 other boys, Myer was chosen to join the Nike Academy in England, where he will go at the end of June for six months. The team of 24 Academy players will start their pre-season in

Vitesse retains title in the Tron Vitesse 10th grade traveled down SH1 hoping to hold on to the trophy it won last season. It wouldn’t be easy though, with many more Auckland teams participating this year. Small goals and poor pitches were just the first challenge to overcome. We drew Eastern Suburbs in our opening game and they gave us a tough opener, which ended in a stalemate. The boys hit their stride in game two against the home team and hit them for six, with goals to Theo (2 headers), Max (2), Oscar and Fenton.

Game three was a very physical affair v Western United but we prevailed 4–1 with some good goals from Freddie, Ari, Maxi B, and an OG. Game four pitted us against a strong Manurewa team in a game that ended all square at 1–1. Will provided the key moment with a defence splitting through ball to Max, who buried his chance. The semi-final against Forest Hill was another tight one that ended up going to penalties. The boys held their nerve though to send us through to the championship final. In the final, against an unbeaten East Coast Bays, we were on fire and dominated the game with some quality passing football. The crucial breakthrough just wouldn’t come though, so to a penalty shoot-out it went again – drama! Carlo coolly converted our last spot kick and George saved the day for us in goal to retain the trophy that all the boys had worked so hard for during a full on day of football. Well done team!

Scott McKee

Neil and the boys will miss Myer in the Men’s First Team, and we will keep you updated as we follow his Nike Academy progress. We wish Myer all the very best in his quest for a professional contract. Myer will be back in NZ soon before he heads off to the UK. If you see him at the club, please wish him all the best too.

KAHA TOURNAMENT SUCCESS IN HAMILTON Western Springs 8th Grade Team Kaha played in the Hamilton North tournament recently. As the first tournament of the year, the boys were very excited and couldn’t wait to get stuck in. Although there were only a small number of teams in their grade, there was still some tough competition with teams from Bay Olympic and Bucklands Beach also travelling down from Auckland. With the pitches being very small and the goals tiny (and manned with a goalie) it made scoring very difficult. The format however suited Kaha as their superior technical skill level in tight space saw them progress to the final unbeaten. They managed to create space very well by playing the ball back out from the back better and quicker than their opposition, and quickly turning defence into attack. In the final against Bucklands Beach, they went down by one goal in the first half, however, you could see the determination in their eyes and you could hear them encouraging each other. They fought back dominating the second half and winning 2–1, the final goal coming a few seconds from full time. Winners and smiles all round. What awesome team effort!! www.wsafc.org.nz May 2016 11

Biggest Rivals

The name Hardly Athletic is one of prestige and performance but is mainly a classic take on the English club, Charlton Athletic. None of us are fans of said team ironically but most of us are unfit so we opted for the Primary word “Hardly” which strikes fair into opposition eyes, for the first 10 minutes anyway.

We have a pretty dead set format of fines that are accrued over the duration of the season, relating to either on field or off field antics. We’re a social bunch and the need for punishment when a foot is stepped out of line is always closely followed by a swift and very public acknowledgment. The fines are collected weekly and if this season finishes much like it started then we should be in for a pretty decent end-of-season rinse up with our faces seemingly covered in glitter.

After many years with a name that didn’t fit the league and with one of the key players (Kirk) wanting to have an interesting team name, The Dirty Houdinis were born. Only a few know the true meaning of the name. Please don’t google it at work!

We have a few big rivals, 3 Kings Ramrod who are our oldest rivals from 2000 something and still a few of the original team. We’ve had some close games, just a few weeks ago we came from 1 nil down to be 4–1 up to hold on in the last 10mins for a 4–3 win while both managers stood on the side-line talking about last years close games.

Competition Last year we successfully competed in ninth division of the men’s senior grade; winning every game and finishing the season with a goal difference of over 100. This season we’ve raised the bar (and drank it dry) to division 6, the level of football is much more enjoyable and we’re currently sitting mid table. Founded and Team Origins A bunch of the lads started playing together at Eastern Suburbs about seven years ago before moving to Ellerslie. Then in 2015 we made the best move of our career as a team, settling at Seddon and haven’t looked back.

Magic Moments I’d have to say that our most treasured moment was winning the league in 2015 but in particular when we reached the 100 goal mark it was pretty special. We didn’t just have a stand out marksman which I’m pretty proud of. Everyone goes out every Saturday arvo and really gives their best for the lads. A true bunch of Roosters who don’t mind a few darts.

Competition With half the team eligible for over 30’s, but the speed and the agility of the lesser aged, fresher players reminding the older players what the 20’s looks like, the Dirty Houdinis enjoy the social and competitive Division nine along with knockout cups and any other tournaments we can find (haven’t found one yet, hint hint springs team comp). Founded and Team Origins Founded 2005, 2006 or 2007 (the older members don’t remember) at Three Kings. Back then the team was called Gomez and then in the late 2000’s the team moved to the brighter / sandy pastures of Western Springs AFC. Each year we’ve lost players to other commitments but have kept a core group, with only a couple from the originals still in the team.

Biggest Rivals We’re lucky to have a few rivals. Three Kings always come to the party in a physical sense but I’d have to say the intensity of our games against our former club Ellerslie are almost the most celebrated. Whether it be in the league or in the cup we always cherish the battle.

Over the years the team has been made up from is a group of work mates, family, friends of friends and old college / Uni football mates. With 5 new players and two ring-ins from the past two years joining, the 2016 Dirty Houdinis are sure to surprise the competition.

Pukekohe has been the most recent team to get the honours of being Dirty Houdini rivals, having only finished a few points from each other in the table in the last few years. Team Rituals and Traditions We have a number of traditions that have come and gone over the years but the ones that have continued are beer rotation, mid and end of season social event (which last year did involve being asked to leave a pub because we’d “spent too much”), losing to the bottom of the table, key player injuries, and having at least one of the Cole brother’s in the team. P18 The Evergreens Club Trivia Quiz Night

The April Evergreens “winter” Trivia Quiz function was another success, to mirror the inaugural and successful November “summer” quiz night. About 70% of the 80 players were first-timers, who all enjoyed a laugh, a gasp, a scream and a tear. The same two teams took to the podium at the end. Team Fact Hunt (formerly Go Feet / Matt Hunt) retained the trophy, while Team Smart Arses (Steve Wildsmith) stormed home with a late run, to steal back second place. The Evergreens “club culture and welfare” focus received solid support and the back account has been boosted another $1,500! Acknowledgements were called, for tremendous support from the sponsors, Scoresportwear (Lotto), The Crown Hotel, Peter Baker Transport, Steve Noyer Moselle Racing Team, EBOS and Aimee Birth-Family Photography. We were equally well supported in the auctions, led by a “racing” friend in Mark Evans’ team and Ollie Maisey, set to arrange a family photo shoot. Quiz Facility operator “CQDIFY” again officiated.

We look forward to our anniversary function this November. 18 May 2016 www.wsafc.org.nz

P19 L ROYA

Team Name Background Royal – Over 40 Div 1 – having worked our way “upwards” from O35 Conference, O35 Div 1 and O40 Conference. Royal have a long tradition dating back to the early 1980’s when a group of Waikato University students put a team together. The name came from the original “sponsor” of the team – the Royal Tavern in Hamilton, which unfortunately did not survive as long as the team did - and has stuck through many years of Sunday League and Western Springs participation. Given that a number of the players that formed the team still play, and that as of last season our youngest player was 49 (oldest 56), it was logical that we moved through the O35’s divisions and now into the O40s. Team Rituals and Traditions Royal’s main strength is primarily our keen participation at the WS bar, but we’ve caused a few upsets over the years, and count Go Feet amongst our scalps in the cup. Unfortunately we achieved some infamy over the summer with a couple of spectacular near deaths in our ranks that have forced some off-season recruitment – but have also proven our resuscitation capabilities. Rees in particular has gained popularity and is yet to buy a beer this season (though some may cruelly suggest that is not uncommon).

process. We are certainly a team that knows how to celebrate our victories, though we tend to take losses pretty well also which might be just as well given our recent record. Royal has always maintained a high level of eccentricity in our player make-up – in both an on and off-field way. New players are selected primarily on a social basis, though the odd non-drinker has snuck through. Our matches could rarely be called boring, and have featured incidents such as playing in skins until some shirts could be found, clearing kicks into a nearby creek until more players arrived, and match reports that bore little relevance to the game actually played. The management and senior positions are changed each year to ensure the work gets shared around, and to confuse the WS officials as to who does what. We have surprisingly failed to attract a loyal fan base, with even our wives refusing to come along to support us, and our kids only turning up for the interesting language used. The highlight of the year is generally the end of season tour – a three day mystery tour of fierce competition, weird activities, and hours of the sport at which Royal could truly be world champions (if only we could stop arguing about the rules) – soccer tennis.

experienced team and were well worthy of the point we gained after drawing 4–4.

FI R ST TEAM Highlight of the season so far: Our first half performance against Central United.

Here at Springs, many of our players have dreams about playing professionally, but for one of them, this could almost be a reality.

The team of 24 Academy players will start their pre-season in 8 May 2016 www.wsafc.org.nz

H T R O N N O T L I HAM PR E-S EAS O N TO U R NAM E NT Vitesse retains title in the Tron Vitesse 10th grade traveled down SH1 hoping to hold on to the trophy it won last season.

TEAM PROFILE

Team Name Background

Team Rituals and Traditions

Biggest Rivals We’re lucky to have a few rivals. Three Kings always come to the party in a physical sense but I’d have to say the intensity of our games against our former club Ellerslie are almost the most celebrated. Whether it be in the league or in the cup we always cherish the battle. 14 May 2016 www.wsafc.org.nz

TEAM PROFILE

Team Name Background

Biggest Rivals

After many years with a name that didn’t fit the league and with one of the key players (Kirk) wanting to have an interesting team name, The Dirty Houdinis were born. Only a few know the true meaning of the name. Please don’t google it at work!

We have a few big rivals, 3 Kings Ramrod who are our oldest rivals from 2000 something and still a few of the original team. We’ve had some close games, just a few weeks ago we came from 1 nil down to be 4–1 up to hold on in the last 10mins for a 4–3 win while both managers stood on the side-line talking about last years close games.

Magic Moments When the team was asked for magic moments things like knockout cup wins, cup competition champs, mid table finishes, janko’ knee cap, Kev’s goal celebrations, come from behind wins, with 10 on the field, for me as a manager getting more than three people to Wednesday night training and having 11 turn up on Saturday is a magic moment.

The Evergreens Club Trivia Quiz Night

TEAM PROFILE

A chilli-bin full of beer is carried to all away games, and much match analysis is undertaken during the emptying www.wsafc.org.nz May 2016 19

McDonald’s is working with New Zealand Football to increase the number of young players registered with clubs around the country, and also providing additional resources to football development officers. 15,000 footballs will also be handed out to Kiwi kids through the season.
