BALANCE AND STRENGTH Contact Justin on 021 673 732

Balance and strength exercises have been shown toPavilion, reduce injuries inMeola amateur, Clinic is located upstairs at Western Springs Seddon Fields, 108 Rd as well as elite footballers. When you are stronger, you are able to cope with the loads that the game demands at all levels The higher you go in the game, the faster the game is, and the stronger you need to be. Specific exercises such as Nordic hamstring curls, have been shown to reduce the amount of hamstring injuries specifically. As I have mentioned in previous newsletters, the FIFA 11+ is a programme that has been designed as a warm up that includes running drills, as well as strengthening and neuromuscular re-training drills that have also been proven to reduce injuries. Proprioception is the sense of where your body is in space. If you know where your foot will be, not only will you be able to connect more cleanly with the ball, but you will also reduce the number of ankle and knee injuries.

The programme will start in mid September 2015 and run for six weeks to help improve your strength, balance, and movement patterns before 7-a-side starts.

Good movement patterns are important for injury prevention. If you run or land with your knees too close together, you are at higher risk of a knee injury.

Stay on your feet,

If you would like to join me on the BASE Training programme please text ASAP as places will be limited. As always I am available at the club if you would like to have a chat about injury prevention, treatment and enhancing your performance, or text me for an appointment on 021 673 732.

I have designed a six week course that will incorporate the progressions of the FIFA 11+, followed by specific, progressive balance and strength exercises. I have called it B.AS.E Training. The acronym stands for Balance and Strength Exercises and I believe it will lay a good foundation to reduce injuries in the amateur footballing population, male and female, young and old. Follow us on Twitter@back2yourfeet for updates on the team and other BTYF activities. 10 September 2015 www.wsafc.org.nz

Proud Supporters of the WSAFC As the 2015 season draws to a close PBT would like to congratulate the WSAFC 1st team on reaching dizzying heights in the premier league. It is exciting to see the team holding their own in this extremely competitive competition as well as bringing through and developing some outstanding players, 2016 looks like it is going to be a ripper season. At PBT we encourage our team members to get involved in grassroots sport and this year we would like to commend the PBT Golden Balls (WSAFC) on achieving 4th place in their division. The over 35’s team which is made up of both staff and customers has a devoted following at PBT and we wish them the best of luck for next year. 2015 has been an exciting year for PBT with the re-launch of our cadetship programme. The PBT cadetship gives promising young people the opportunity to earn a career in the freight industry. Cadets complete 16 modules which cover every element of PBT as a business with the end goal being a leadership position at PBT. Our latest cadetship recruit is none other than Scott Sellar, member of the WSAFC 1st Team. Scott is an outstanding new employee and we couldn’t be happier to have him as part of the PBT family. PBT will be back for the 2016 season and would like to wish everyone a great Summer and Christmas- we look forward to catching you all next year.

PAPAKURA TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONSHIP WINNER, 12TH GRADE FIREBOLTS A season fill of challenges and opportunities for the Firebolts continued with our entry into the Papakura 12th Grade tournament meaning a change back to 9 a side and smaller pitches. The day dawned bright and sunny but as we’ve experienced before at the army camp this can quickly change so we along with four other 11th and 12th grade Western Springs teams set up at our base camp which looked the envy of other clubs with our suitably visible gazebos. Into pool play and needing to adapt quickly to the pitches that were even narrower than a half field meant play was at times was congested and the ball fiercely competed for. Having seen off both Birkenhead and Fencibles we came up against a determined Waitemata and close arm wrestle ending in a 0-0 draw. Undefeated

14 September 2015 www.wsafc.org.nz

in pool play saw us progress into the Championship semi final and to be fair a pretty ugly display of football with neither team able consistently play the ball on the ground, control the game or score. So straight to sudden death penalties, and a combination of a fine save from our goal keeper Callum who had previously kept us in the game with a superb save, and Leo slotting his penalty comfortably saw us progress into the final. We certainly saved our best game until last and put on a solid performance in the final which was to our liking, on a bigger field and better playing surface. A number of scoring opportunities were created which we weren’t able to convert meant we went into extra time where Leo made up for his regulation penalty that was saved to calmly slot the

winner following a great passage of passing play through the field. The days effort, while not our best display of Firebolts football was a result of the experiences we have gained attending many tournaments over the years and understanding what is required to get the job done. Tournaments can be a result of a bit of luck that can go with or against teams meaning that not always the better team wins but does result in lots of learning opportunities and experiences along the way. Well done to the team and another solid accomplishment for the season.

WOMEN’S PREMIER TEAM

Summary of the Women’s Premier League and Cup season Knockout Cup

The season can be split very much into three parts start, middle and end. The first six games included some of the best football we played all year but as we were a new team gelling together, there were some individual mistakes which led to a couple of defeats that our performance didn’t deserve. The middle six games were our most consistent. A high performance level especially defensively which led to only one goal conceded. The last six games coincided with losing a lot of players through injury. In our last game of the season we only had 11 of the 25 player premier squad available. Because of this our performances were up and down and a couple of draws in games we could and should have won put the league out of reach. The fact we could still have won the league, up until two games to go, is all down to the attitude of the player’s who were available and how they dealt with very trying circumstances. In the end we finished six points behind the winners Claudelands Rovers.

We ended up playing four away games all against premier league opposition. First up was Papatoetoe and a 7–0 win. Then a tough trip to Hamilton to play Claudelands and a 1–0 win. Followed by a 3–2 win after extra time at Eastern Suburb. Unfortunately our performance in the semi final wasn’t up to the level of the previous rounds and ended in a 2–0 defeat. Played 4, won 3, lost 1, goals for 11, goals against 4

A CLASSIC HOME DERBY This is why we all love football. Two Springs teams – the mighty Tornadoes and the gifted Galaxy – both playing in the 15th Boys Division 1 competition and scheduled for a home derby. With neither team having ever played on the turf, a few fixtures were kindly shuffled by Mr Rutland and a game on the main pitch was arranged. Both teams are full of boys that have played at the club since they were very young, most of the boys are at Western Springs College together and a lot of them are good mates. With the Tornadoes sitting near the top of the table and Galaxy at the opposite end there was plenty of banter leading in. The Tornadoes are well coached by a few good club stalwarts, Mario Campbell (ex Senior Chairman and now Over 35s heavyweight), Craig Platt and Paul Garlick. Meanwhile, Galaxy is such a popular side, that every season there is a waiting list of boys wanting to join. No doubt all down to their coaching team of Erwin Van Asbeck and manager Stephen Canning.

16 September 2015 www.wsafc.org.nz

Anyway a bumper crowd of parents, family, school mates, girlfriends, boyfriends and interested football followers turned up on a warm Saturday afternoon to witness a cracking spectacle with Galaxy in black and the Tornadoes in the usual Green and White. With a lot of sideline encouragement there was plenty of passion, some bruising tackles, a number of cracking saves and goal line clearances and a pile of tension, particularly from the coaches and one moment of unbridled joy as the nil all deadlock was broken and the final whistle sounded. Well done both teams! I hope you enjoyed being the main event and it was a pleasure to watch. A great game played in a good spirit and well controlled by the man in black. ...oh and the result, a 1–0 win to Galaxy. Look out at training Tornadoes, Mario might be very grumpy. Cheers from the Man on the Balcony Photos by Geoffrey Short

INTRODUCING WS JAVA The 9th Grade Girls team will be representing Springs at the Nationals later in September. Today, they were named Runners Up at the Fencibles 9th Grade Girls tournament. An awesome effort for a team who had their first game together last Sunday! A special mention also to Anya, who received the Player of the Final award. Exciting times ahead!

HELPING OUT A FOOTBALL-LOVING KID IN NEPAL Hi everyone, meet Raj Tamang. He’s a pretty cool little nine-year-old schoolboy who lives all the way over in Kathmandu in Nepal. Just like a lot of our Springs’ kids, Raj loves football, plays it all the time, and dreams of one day playing for “Los Merengues” of Real Madrid (don’t we all?!), and he absolutely idolises Christiano Ronaldo. Unfortunately, his family’s home and business, the Peace Lodge in the Himalayan mountains, was severely damaged in the huge earthquake they had in April. His mum, dad, brother and granddad all survived, but the family is doing it very tough; living in an open field in a makeshift shelter with no income and relying on aid to survive. I met Raj’s lovely parents several times during some trekking expeditions I did in the Himalayas in the mid-late 90s. Like most Nepalese people, they didn’t have much, but they would give you their last bowl of rice if they could. They were very kind and helpful to me and my mates, and I have never forgotten them. Now’s my chance to try and return the favour. I have set up a ‘Give A Little’ fundraising page for Raj’s family to help them get back on their feet. They want to rebuild their house and little trekking lodge as soon as they can. I’m hoping you can help by donating to it, or spreading the word with your friends, family, colleagues and the wider football community. Check out the page here: http://givealittle.co.nz/cause/tamangfamilynepal Thank you very much! Scott McKee Coach, 9th Grade Vitesse www.wsafc.org.nz September 2015 17

11 Waitakere City 21 2 3 16 23 53 -30 9 Notably 18yr old Myer Bevan had an outstanding season finishing 12 Three Kings Utd 19 3 0 16 14 52 -38 9 with 13 First Team goals (plus Defensively this year we struggled, and we conceded many more in the 19s and Reserves). He improved far too many goals. Part of this was losing Sam his all round game and now looks a very clinical player Brotherton to Under 20 and Under 23 duty for NZ all at this level. I am hoping he keeps this form in the season and French defensive Lynchpin Benoit Bruyat summer and becomes part of the next NZ U20 squad. mid season. Niall Rankin also left for a job overseas Other First Team players George Debenham and so we were very light in the central defensive stocks. Oscar Ramsay should also be pushing for international Maurie Wasi who is a midfielder by trade had to step up recognition too. and although it took him a while to adjust he had a solid George grew into the #10 role this year netting seven second half of the season as did defensive partner Josh goals and numerous assists, he always looked a threat Gair, left back Jono Quinn and right back Darren White. with his vision and technique. had a lot of niggling injuries throughout the year which hampered him recapturing the consistent top class performances he gave in 2014. He Still chipped in with some very important goals again, but a summer break will certainly do him good before hitting the ground running again in 2016. Adam McDonald our number one goalkeeper, made enough classy saves to justify playing every game in 2015 and will certainly benefit from all the game experience he has under his belt now. His kicking is still a great weapon with the way I want my team to play out from the back. He still needs to be more consistent but he is willing to learn and is open to constructive criticism. In midfield Sam Burfoot continued to impress and build on his reputation as one of the country’s best midfielders and he was able supported by the evergreen Liam Mulrooney who still makes the team tick with his clever passing and game knowledge.

boys in there quests for elevation to the First Team. This is our objective in the Reserve League, to play a similar brand of football as the First Team and give these players that exposure . All in all, we are only a few players short of being a leading outfit in this league and as Glenfield Rovers and now Eastern Suburbs have shown us, you can get promotion and not just survive but you can win the title. This has to be our goal. I’m very much still enjoying the journey and want to continue in leading the flagship team to greater success in the coming years. Thanks for everybody’s support.

Neil

In the forward line, we always had plenty of options and we only failed to score in two fixtures all season. Rossi Nkoy and Arnold Kochasira showed power and pace rarely seen at this level and Nicolai Berry, Myer and George gave quality and assurance on the ball giving us a good blend of all the attributes you need when looking to score goals. I think the biggest positive this season is the fact that we have been competitive in at least 80% of the games and we have retained a large portion of the squad from the team that won Division 2 a couple of seasons ago. In a recent game eight players from our 16 man match day squad joined the club in Division 2 so I am proud that they are now enjoying top flight Saturday football in Auckland. The best performance of the season was last month when we demolished Bay Olympic at Seddon Fields. Nicolai Berry led the charge with five well taken goals and to be honest if the score had been 15+ then it would not have been a surprise. We looked like we could score every time we went forward and we had the Bay defensive line chasing shadows! We let ourselves down from the penalty spot on at least five occasions I can remember this year and these misses came at crucial times in games . With a little more luck, some better body on the line defending and some better penalty taking we could have certainly been a top four team this year so plenty to be positive about for 2016. We have certainly got a lot more depth in the playing squad now with youngsters Scott Sellar(18), Paolo Korkman(15), Charlie Thomas(17), Joshua Brame (16) and Elliot Munford (16) pushing for First Team places after looking very good in Reserve Team football. The Reserves will finish in the top five which is a good achievement as it was such a young group of players but those vital minutes of senior football will help those www.wsafc.org.nz September 2015 19

CRUZEIRO EC V ELLERSLIE Fine and dandy So busy with pushing blue and red circles around on a large white tactics board before the game, the coach must have settled on the one tactic that seems to work week in and week out against Cruzeiro EC. That is to push one blue circle up the other end of the white board and draw 7 arrows to it. “There! That’s how we’ll take them,” he muttered in absolute confidence. “We’ll push ‘Andre the Giant’ (actually his name was Michael) right up there and hammer him with long balls. Meanwhile, we’ll try to stop them scoring here with six of these blue circles lining up on the edge of the box like this...” Well for 29 minutes this tactic worked a dream as the red circles struggled to find a way to penetrate that most impregnable of tactics, a row of six blue circles. But luckily for the red circles they are blessed with being more than just a one-trick pony and in fact have a handful of one trick ponies to call on. Vincent doing what he does Best (sorry ..couldn’t resist) and finishing off a lovely bit of attacking work from Ryan Long Ball Over the Backline Bolus on the cusp of halftime. Springs 1–0 Springs talked about keeping possession at the break and not taking on players in silly areas while Ellerslie went back to the White Board and pushed a few more blue circles up the pitch to join the lonely one. Ruke was told to continue to ‘look after’ Andre the Giant as he had done so well in the first half. Picking Andre’s pocket each time he thought he was loose and galloping away for goal with Ruke in hot pursuit. Hey Presto! Ruke would emerge unscathed with the ball, a wallet, a watch and some tickets to The Incredible Mr Capsis at the Auckland Town Hall. The second half started with more of the same, only Benji had now added to the ponies in the stable and it was not too long before he wriggled clear in the final third and fed a ball back to Ryan Lofted Ball in From the Right and Into the Back of the Net Bolus that took us to 2–0. 20 September 2015 www.wsafc.org.nz

Then as if to show Ellerslie that we are happy to share the goals around, Benji put one over the keeper from an outrageous angle and into the net himself. 3–0 with about 15 to go. Game over you would think? No way back from there you would think? One thing that you shouldn’t do however is to underestimate the determination of a team of blue circles scorned. The final 15 minutes turned into a flurry of attacks on our goal. Blue circles were coming from every direction and Blake was the busiest he’s been a wee while. Attack after attack was repelled as we opened doors and then shut them again. Passed well for three passes and then thought ‘what colour are we again?’ and promptly passed it to a blue circle. But credit to our backs and Malachi at holding who held their line firm and managed to scramble through with a clean sheet. With large dollops of ‘spirit’ and ‘character’ and perhaps a small dose of tactical nuance we prevailed. It so easily could have been a 3–3 draw. MVP went very deservedly to Max P who had a great day of outmuscling the Ellerslie attack and reading the play brilliantly. But without El Cartarista (The Pickpocket) Ruke we might have been watching a very different ending. That win takes Cruzeiro into oxygen debt altitudes of top four on the table… even top three. Depending on outcomes over the next weeks we should be able to stay there but it will really depend on our ability to out tactic the opposition and to keep passing to the right colour circle? Blue... no wait it’s red.
