FROM THE COMMITTEE SUMMER THURSDAY CORPORATE LEAGUE It’s hard to believe that we are probably only 10 games away from the end of the season, but already the club is looking towards the summer season and next year. With this in mind, the club is running its Thursday Corporate League once more in the summer period. However, to achieve this the club would be interested in hearing from anyone who can help manage/coordinate this business in-house league. Duties would include: communicating the weekly draws; being available on Thursday nights to coordinate field setup, teams and the referees; and oversee the games and results. If you are interested please email the Paul Rutland (clubmanager@wsafc.org.nz). The club would manage team recruitment, collection of funds and organising referees etc. SENIOR PRIZEGIVING On Saturday 12 September, it is senior prizegiving, so please ensure you keep the night free (the senior committee are working hard on planning will provide more details soon). This year the newly formed Evergreens Committee (which you will have seen recent emails offering support in the way of grants to teams and individuals) are organising the Over 40s tournament, in a bid to raise further funds towards their grants scheme. More news will follow, once the dates etc are sorted.

PARKING No doubt you will all be aware of the additional parking options we now have on the weekends in an effort to remove as many cars off Meola Road as possible. We would ask that you please try and use this area (opposite Motat) as much as possible – this way reducing the risks of someone getting knocked down on the already very busy road (see map). CLUBROOMS To help keep our club rooms and facilities looking good, we would appreciate help in ensuring all our members maintain a decent level of etiquette when using the facilities. So, could you please help us by: • Keeping a reasonable standard of dress in the clubrooms at all times and absolutely no boots allowed inside. This also means being considerate of others by either showering or changing clothes – we ask that you don’t sit in the clubrooms in full playing kits. • Clearing your table as you leave; taking your empty glasses and bottles back to the bar. • Picking up any rubbish around the clubrooms and placing it in the bins provided. Cheers The WSAFC Committees

JUNIOR AND YOUTH PRIZEGIVING: Please don’t forget to review the dates and times on the noticeboard in this issue for your relevant prizegiving. It is a great opportunity to provide some recognition to players who have worked especially hard through the season.

SCREAMING EAGLES It has been quite the season for WSAFC Screaming Eagles. A number of summer signings along with the retention of the established core of the team meant hopes were high coming into the start of the season. The first day saw disappointment as Eagles lost to a Papakura team they were expected to beat. However, 11 games and 50 goals later the Division 8 title was secured with three games in hand. With the standard of the team available league success was expected, however the progress of the team in the Northern Knockout

Cup has been remarkable. At the time of writing Eagles are the only WSAFC team remaining in quarter finals of the Northern Knockout having knocked out the leaders of Division 2 in the last round. Whilst further progress in the cup is a bonus, the lads have one eye on the newly constructed trophy cabinet in the club rooms. Thank you from all the team to the WASFC staff and our supporters. Here’s to further progress in the cup and hopefully a promotion in 2016.

WESTERN SPRINGS AFC

The effect of conditioning training can sometimes leave even the fittest players short of breath, howeverContact there Justin are some have medical conditions on 021people 673 732who www.backtoyourfeet.health.nz Clinic is located upstairs at Western Springs Pavilion, Fields, 108 Meola Rd such as Asthma that can really leave them breathless andSeddon wheezing. Asthma, taken from the Greek word for panting, is a chronic inflammatory condition that causes symptoms of wheezing (most often when breathing out), coughing and shortness of breath. Exercise Induced Asthma (EIA) is when you get transient or temporary airway narrowing that occurs during, but more often after exercise. Some things that can bring on the symptoms can include cold air, exercising, and allergens. Once somebody has been diagnosed as an Asthmatic they are usually prescribed medication to either prevent the symptoms from coming on, or to relieve the symptoms when they have them. It is a good idea to let your coach know if your child is asthmatic and maybe give him an inhaler to keep with the teams medical kit. Sometimes when they are having an asthma attack, asthmatics need a ‘spacer’ to help get the reliever medication in (see picture). The medication is dispensed into the chamber and the spacer is placed over the mouth so the medication can be inhaled. In severe cases, where the asthmatic is struggling to breath, or they do not have their medication they may need

assistance in the form of an ambulance to get them to hospital. Keeping the asthmatic calm, relaxed and focussed on their breathing while you wait for help is important. We are planning on holding a injury prevention and strengthening hour long bootcamp style programme to help prepare players for 7 aside. This will include the FIFA 11+ along with other exercises that have been shown to make you stronger for football and will be run in the early morning a couple of times a week. 11 GRADE TOURNAMENT TH

On the middle Sunday of the July school holidays we held the inaugural WSAFC 11th grade mixed and girls tournaments at our home of football, Seddon fields. Right from the start you could feel it was going to be a cracker of a day, cold for sure, the frosted turf and vapoured breathes of kids warming up added an early element of intrigue. As the teams arrived and camps were set up, the happy chatter of kids and smell of fresh coffee lay the foundation for the day ahead. Springs had four teams on the day and high expectations for each of them. Bullets, Vipers, Sportivo and Emeralds. We can be proud of the way each our teams performed and the manner in which they represented themselves, their teams and the club. A special mention must go to the coaches and players of the Bullets and Emeralds for making their respective championship finals and putting themselves in a position to take home the honours. Unfortunatley this year wasn’t our year as Eastern Suburbs took out both championship finals and our congratulations and respect go to them. At Western Springs we treat the running of a tournament as a chance to showcase our club, to welcome the players, teams and supporters from opposing clubs and ensure they leave with fond memories of the experience. Now running a tournament is not a simple task, ensuring we create an environment for great football is key, there is though a lot that has to be done to ensure the focus is on the football and the kids themselves. A special hat-tip must go to Tracy Cunnington and her minions, Mike and Phil, to our volunteer refs from the WSAFC Under 19s, all the mum’s and dad’s who helped out on the day, the Vitesse parents for the BBQ and of course the clubs and teams that came and played great football in good spirit.

The Girls 10th grade Emeralds were very excited to be making their tournament debut at the WSAFC 11th grade tournament held during the recent school holidays. It was an awesome day with great weather. Three hard fought round robin games were played with two wins and a draw. The highlight for the Emeralds was a close one nil win over WSAFC 11th grade Sportivo which saw us progress to the final. The final was played in great spirit but the Eastern Suburbs strikers were too strong in the end running out four nil victors. The step up to play against 11 grade teams was a real challenge but the Emeralds played some great football and are already looking forward to the next tournament.

FIREBOLTS IN NELSON During the recent school holidays, the Western Springs Firebolts ventured south to take part in the Nelson Suburbs Club Cup. Winning 8 out of 8 games, against teams from all over New Zealand, the Firebolts emerged victorious. The Firebolts, who are playing up a grade in 13th Conference this year, were missing a couple of players, including their regular goalkeeper, so returned to 12th grade for this tournament. Reverting to 9-a-side and smaller pitches would take some adjustment on the boys’ part. The opposition were an unknown quantity also, of course, but the boys knew that they could expect stiff opposition from the teams from strong clubs like Cashmere Technical and Nelson Suburbs, particularly. The boys left for Nelson in high spirits, determined to represent the club proudly and to bring home the trophy.

team and led 2–0 at half-time, thanks to goals from Leo and Kaea. Cashmere were definitely up for the fight and the Firebolts knew that it was important to score the next goal. Unfortunately, a soft penalty was awarded against us but, when Conor saved it, the wind was taken out of the opposition’s sails and Kaea went on to score two more goals to grab his hat-trick and seal victory. So, a very satisfactory first day was completed; three wins out of three, eight goals for and none against. The gang headed off to the local Speight’s Ale House for dinner and a beer/wine/lemonade to reflect on a job well done but knowing that day two would present further challenges, including a game against Wellington’s Western Suburbs, the other unbeaten team after the first day.

Unfortunately, the team arrived in Nelson to find that Matt had been struck down by a bug and that they would be without him in their engine room for most of the tournament. Not disheartened by the injustice of fate, the boys came out strongly in their first game against Mapua. Despite dominating possession, they went to the break 0–0. Mapua’s stubborn resistance was eventually broken down and the boys completed a satisfying 3–0 victory, finished off with a brilliant individual effort by Luke. Next up for the Firebolts was the home team, Nelson Suburbs. What was becoming clear was that the mainland teams were a lot more physical than the Auckland teams the Firebolts were used to playing. Nelson were tough and uncompromising but relied heavily on long balls, which Solomon, JJ and Sam at the back and Conor in goal, dealt with expertly for the whole game. Our boys stuck to their game and played the ball around beautifully but struggled to get past a resolute Nelson defence and a good goalkeeper. Finally, some beautiful close control and passing around the edge of the opposition box led to an opening, which was expertly converted by Oliver, giving the boys a welldeserved 1–0 victory. The day ended with a 4–0 win over Cashmere Technical. This was another battle; the Firebolts knocked the ball around with style, were the better 12 August 2015 www.wsafc.org.nz

Day two delivered the forecast heavy rain and the boys started the day with a convincing 5–0 victory, in appalling conditions, over Blenheim Trojans – Freddie proving a particular handful for the Blenheim defence and scoring two goals. Matt had recovered sufficiently to take the field but now Solomon was out with knee problems. When it rains, it pours! If previous results were any guide, game five against Western Suburbs was likely to be the Firebolts’ hardest game. Thankfully, the rain eased slightly and allowed the boys to play their natural passing game. Luke dominated the midfield and Oliver, Seb and George terrorised the opposition on the flanks, creating numerous chances. Kaea scored his second hat-trick of the tournament, Leo scored a blinder from long-range,

George a brilliant individual goal, and the Firebolts ran out easy 7–1 winners. Another very good day’s work was complete. A trip to the local hot pools gave the boys an opportunity to rest weary bodies in preparation for our final pool game and, hopefully, a semi-final and final on the third and final day of the tournament. Day 3 started with a convincing 8–0 victory over Parklands; possibly not an ideal warm-up for what was likely to be a tough semi-final but the Firebolts were playing far superior football to everyone they faced and had shown during pool play that they were the team to beat. They had played six games and won all six, scoring 28 goals and conceding only one – another penalty. Our semifinal opponents were Nelson, against whom we had ground out a 1–0 victory during pool play. The boys knew that they would be up for another physical battle. As expected, the Nelson side came out aggressively and did their best to disrupt the Firebolts’ game. After a very tense opening 15 minutes, the boys finally broke down the Nelson defence and we went to the break leading 2–0, thanks to goals from Oliver and Freddie. Nerves continued to jangle on the sideline until Seb coolly and calmly converted a third to make the game safe. A minute later, Sam put the icing on the cake with a beautiful fourth goal and the Firebolts were through. The boys would face Cashmere Tech in the final, against whom they’d had a convincing 4–0 win in pool play. Anything can happen in a final, of course, and the boys weren’t taking anything for granted. It was a relief to have everyone back, if not exactly 100% recovered, available to play, at least. The final followed a similar pattern to the pool game. The Firebolts played all the football and

Cashmere battled hard and flew into every tackle. The boys held firm and matched their opponents in the physical battle, dominated possession and created some chances, but only took a slender 1–0 lead, a brilliant volleyed effort by Solomon, into half-time. The Firebolts scored early in the second half but let Cashmere back into the game with a long-range free-kick, only the second goal the boys had conceded all tournament. In the face of adversity, the Firebolts stayed calm, continued to pass their way around their opponents and created many scoring opportunities. Two more well-taken goals, to Freddie and Kaea, made the final safe and the Firebolts were champions. Victory was nothing more than their brilliant teamwork, skill and dedication deserved. Congratulations also to Luke Jerkovic, whose brilliant and consistent play in the Firebolts’ midfield saw him take out Player of the Tournament. Obviously winning 8 games out of 8 and only conceding two goals speaks volumes about the Firebolts’ skill and determination. What was most pleasing about the boys’ performances, however, was how they stuck to playing attractive football, regardless of the conditions or opponents. Credit must go to coach, Paul Thomas, who has always encouraged the boys to play a passing game. Many of the opposition coaches complimented the team on the level of their play. The Firebolts did the club proud! The players and their parents would like to thank the Firebolts’ coach and manager, Paul and Rachel Thomas, not just for organising this successful trip but for the numerous hours they give up to develop and support the team.

VITESSE SAVOURS SUCCESS AT FORREST HILL MILFORD! 9th Grade premier team Vitesse travelled to the North Shore tournament one day after surviving the ‘big storm’ at Seddon Field on Saturday 18 July, when the boys played through driving rain, high winds, and flooded turf against Eastern Suburbs until, three minutes before full time and 5-0 up, the match was finally abandoned when the goals blew over – scary stuff! Luckily, Sunday dawned a little brighter and although still very cold, the FHM tournament got underway. We played three pool games: BIRKENHEAD – The boys were quickly back down to business and they swept the opposition aside in this game. They played great football and it could have ended in quite a big score to us had it not been for their strong keeper. Goals from Will and a fantastic volley from Fenton capped a top opening performance. RESULT 2–1 HIBISCUS COAST – We came out cold (probably literally!) in this game and we paid the price for it. Hibiscus pressed us hard and tackled strongly. They scored a break-away goal and despite rallying strongly in the second half, we couldn’t peg the advantage back. We gained the initiative, hit the cross-bar, and George

14 August 2015 www.wsafc.org.nz

scored what we thought was a superb equaliser, only for it to be flagged off-side. RESULT 0–1 THREE KINGS UNITED – The boys were really up for this game, and it showed. They were on fire from the kick off, playing with high energy and lighting up the pitch with some wonderful, free-flowing football. The pace and accuracy of our passing was top notch and we created a lot of opportunities – TKU just had no answer. Ari scored a brilliant header, Fenton struck another lovely goal and Will scored a real screamer; a powerful, curling left footer into the top corner – golazo! Our best performance of the day, if not the season. RESULT 3–1 We finished a close second from our pool of four, which was enough to go through to the Championship knock-out round: QUARTER FINAL V EAST COAST BAYS A This team gave us a real battle but the boys responded to the challenge. Our defence (Ari and Zane) was rock solid and our keepers (George and Fenton) were safe as houses. ECB nabbed the first goal but they hadn’t even finished celebrating when Will went straight down

the other end and smashed one in off the cross bar from outside the box. The boys played really well in a tight encounter that ended 1-1. No goals in extra time meant it came down to penalties. In the shootout, all our hard work in practice this year paid off, with Fenton not only making two fine saves, but also stepping up to coolly slot home our first pen ‘like a boss’. Carlo, Will, and Freddie all expertly converted their penalties as well, while ECB’s only managed two. RESULT 1–1 (4–2 PENS) SEMI FINAL V BUCKLAND’S BEACH I had one eye on this team throughout the day and I thought they were the outstanding team on show, until they came up against us that is…Zane, Ari and Theo shut their strong attackers down, giving them little room to play. After a flat opening period, we grew into the game, with Carlo, Freddie and Fenton combining well in midfield. Their efforts resulted in Will poking one home to open the scoring. Buckland’s Beach wouldn’t lie down though, and they scored a fine goal of their own. Time was ticking and it looked like another penalty shootout was on the cards until, late in the game, we got a corner. Will whipped over a sweet delivery which beat all the defenders and then, seemingly out of nowhere, George rose up at the far post and smashed a beautiful, text-book striker’s header into the back of the net to win the game and send us into the final – cue big celebrations! RESULT 2–1

CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL V EAST COAST BAYS B Having come this far, nothing was going to stop Vitesse now. From the kick off it was frantic, with lots of tackles flying in and some tidy, quick passing from our players. George, playing in goal, confidently mopped up all ECBs’ shots, while Ari and Zane defended with cool heads. Our attack began to click into gear, with Carlo, Freddie and Fenton again combining well to get Will into a goal scoring position. He didn’t need a second invitation – one nil to Vitesse! Just before half-time ECB equalised, but we were on top. With Director of Football Neil Emblen looking on from the sidelines, the boys took control and played ECB off the park in the final 10 minutes. Theo, who put in a super-human performance from holding mid, scored the deserved winner for us with a lovely strike, and Will finished the game off by coolly rounding the keeper and passing the ball home into an empty net. The final whistle blew and we were CHAMPIONS! RESULT 3–1 While there were many good individual performances on the day, collectively the team was tireless, brave, and technically very good. Importantly, they also displayed good sportsmanship and were humble in their victory. The boys worked so hard all day and they deserved their trophy. Scott McKee (Coach) *Monty Holden was unwell and Max McInnes was overseas.

VITESSE IS: FENTON MURDOCH

ZANE MARSH

He showcased his quick footwork and some amazing ball wizardry, completely bamboozling defenders at times. He also put on a fine shooting display, backed up with some outstanding saves while in goal - not to mention a brilliant penalty. According to him, he was in full “beast mode” – I couldn’t agree more!

He never put a foot wrong and he did everything, and more, that was asked of him in the line of duty. The rock of our defence, he showed a lot of maturity after winning the ball (which he did tirelessly all day), to calmly distribute forward to his team mates. A stellar performance from a stellar boy.

ARI BAILEY

FREDDIE KYRIAK

If I could describe a player who can tackle, dribble, beat players one on one and fire short and long range passes as accurate as laser guided missiles, it would be Ari. Mr Reliable with a heart bigger than Texas, no one got past him all day. He also showed his excellent attacking abilities with a nice headed goal from a corner and some strong runs down the flanks. Star rating: 10/10.

His pace that kept our opponents on edge all day but it was his fantastic ball control and passing ability that really stood out. Football is all about a having a great first touch; without it you can’t play the game. Freddie has one of the best first touches going around, and he used it to great advantage, beating player after player with deft footwork and a high work rate. An action-packed performance to make any coach proud.

GEORGE WALKER

WILL MCKEE

Captain Fantastic’ for the day, George ‘de Gea’ was rock solid while in goal, marshalling our defence, making many saves and distributing well out the back. In open play, his passing skills made his teammates look good. And just when we needed a hero, up he stepped to score the winning goal to get us to the final. Thanks Georgie!

He choose a good day to light a tournament on fire. He made a lot of mazy runs, leaving trails of defenders in his wake. He also scored some fine goals, most notably that belter against TKU and the composed rounding of the keeper that sealed the trophy. Often our ‘go-to’ player, he was the inspiration the team needed.

CARLO IMRE

THEO GORMAN

On another other day Carlo could have been the tournament’s Golden Boot, but the goals just didn’t drop for him this day (apart from his power penalty in the shootout of course!). That did not stop him trying though, and he ran his socks off for the team in a selfless display. His physical presence, hard as nails tackling and keen eye for the pass resulted in many opportunities for his team mates. A workaholic on the pitch and a real team player off it.

With an engine bigger than a John Deere tractor and a better sense of spatial awareness than Bear Grylls lost in the Amazon without a compass, ‘Theo-saurus’ was the heart and soul of the team. Non-stop energy, ‘box to box’ running, tenacious tackling, quick feet and distribution skills that belie his age are just some of his traits. He was the conductor of our little band of brothers, and he led us to victory in style - his goal in the final a fitting personal tribute to what was a power house tournament performance.

10TH GRADE NERO - PAPAKURA CHAMPIONS It was a tough pool draw that faced the lads from Nero at the start of the Papakura City tournament. Nero started strong beating TKU 8–0, but then faced a tougher opponent in Fencibles who the boys just beat 2–1. The third pool game saw Nero pitted against East Coast Bays Wood – a team they have tussled with over many tournaments. Nero looked a little sleepy and ECB got off to a strong start with an early goal. Still struggling to find their feet and shape Nero were soon 0–2 down. Finally firing up – Nero pulled back a goal and were managing to get on top when time got the better of them. ECB Wood were thrilled to take a 2–1 win over old foes. This put Nero under pressure for their final pool round. Facing a very strong Onehunga Phoenix – Nero had to win to make it through to the Championship Rounds, a tough ask against a quality team who just a couple of weeks prior convincingly beat Nero 3–0. Nero were up for the challenge! Doggedly determined Nero fought hard and scored early in the first half. Onehunga tried hard to equalise but all hands were on deck for Nero defence with every player tackling fiercely, tracking back hard and never letting

18 August 2015 www.wsafc.org.nz

Onehunga get a clear shot on goal. Composure and heart saw Nero clock a 1–0 win and Onehunga relegated to the Plate finals. It was a tense few minutes at the administration tent as we waited for the pool placings. Nero and ECB Wood being tied on points - goal difference put Nero at the top of the pool (a loss to Onehunga would have put Nero out of Championship and Plate rounds). As the best placed second team ECB also just made it through to the Championship semi- finals. Nero started its finals run against Birkenhead Brazil – whilst not as strong as Nero, the rain that threatened all day finally came and levelled the playing conditions. Birkenhead hung tough but Nero’s skill and passing play delivered them a firm 2–0 win. Onto the final and a second meeting with ECB Wood. A chance for revenge this was a different Nero team. On their toes, with the sniff of another cup for the club, Nero outwitted, outplayed, outlasted. There was no way Nero was letting this go. Nero played toughed using all their skill and strength and bought home a convincing 2–0 victory. Championes!

Western Springs AFC moved into the semi-finals of the ASB Women’s Knockout Cup on Sunday via a dramatic 3-2 extra-time victory over fellow Auckland club Eastern Suburbs AFC at Madills Farm Recreation Reserve. The 2007 competition champions were set to exit the 2015 edition in the last eight with Eastern Suburbs holding a 2–1 lead as the game entered stoppage time. But Rebecca O’Neill – winner of the competition with Western Springs in 2007 – pounced on a loose ball in the Suburbs area in the aftermath of an Emily Cooper free kick to dramatically pull the visitors level with only two minutes to go. O’Neill then provided the extra time winner, slotting home from the penalty spot after Rebekah van Dort fouled Lauren Mathis with the Springs’ striker bearing down on the home side’s goal. Earlier in the match, Mathis had given Springs a 25th minute lead when the former New Zealand U-17 representative profited from a Suburbs turnover deep in their own territory to open the scoring.

Suburbs levelled before the break when O’Neill was ruled to have taken down Jacqui Hand in the penalty area and Grace Jale equalised from the penalty spot. Western Springs coach Richard Wilson was satisfied with the way his side kept pushing to earn their semifinal berth against defending champions Glenfield Rovers later this month. “Until the penalty in the first half I felt we were good value for the 1–0 lead,” Wilson said. “That was a big moment in the game and Suburbs took full advantage to get back level and then go ahead late in the second half. “But even once we were behind, we still carried a threat going forwards and I think across the balance of the game we showed enough resilience when we needed it to give ourselves a chance to win the game.” “I’m pleased for the girls that their effort was rewarded in the end and we can now look forward to the semifinal against Glenfield.” Words by nzfootball.co.nz

HELPING OUT A FOOTBALL-LOVING KID IN NEPAL Hi everyone, meet Raj Tamang. He’s a pretty cool little nine-year-old schoolboy who lives all the way over in Kathmandu in Nepal. Just like a lot of our Springs’ kids, Raj loves football, plays it all the time, and dreams of one day playing for “Los Merengues” of Real Madrid (don’t we all?!), and he absolutely idolises Christiano Ronaldo. Unfortunately, his family’s home and business, the Peace Lodge in the Himalayan mountains, was severely damaged in the huge earthquake they had in April. His mum, dad, brother and granddad all survived, but the family is doing it very tough; living in an open field in a makeshift shelter with no income and relying on aid to survive. I met Raj’s lovely parents several times during some trekking expeditions I did in the Himalayas in the mid-late 90s. Like most Nepalese people, they didn’t have much, but they would give you their last bowl of rice if they could. They were very kind and helpful to me and my mates, and I have never forgotten them. Now’s my chance to try and return the favour. I have set up a ‘Give A Little’ fundraising page for Raj’s family to help them get back on their feet. They want to rebuild their house and little trekking lodge as soon as they can. I’m hoping you can help by donating to it, or spreading the word with your friends, family, colleagues and the wider football community. Check out the page here: http://givealittle.co.nz/cause/tamangfamilynepal Thank you very much! Scott McKee Coach, 9th Grade Vitesse
