P4 NOTICEBOARD Hello All, Welcome back after the festive season and what I hope was a Happy New Year.

please help the club avoid the typical last minute rush by completing registration early.

With school and work returning to a regular routine the club has also started to change gear with the various committees now preparing for the fast approaching 2017 season.

https://membership.sportstg.com/v6/regoform. cgi?formID=65539&aID=7674

Preparing for the season involves organising trials, managing registrations, finding coaches and/or managers, purchasing team kits and generally managing the multitude of tasks that are required to run the club. In advance, I would like to pass on my thanks to all those involved in pulling these together and to those parents and supporters who are taking on roles. Without your efforts the club can’t operate.

We are pleased to confirm that both Neil Emblen (Director of Football) and Richard Wilson – Rico (Women’s Director of Football) are returning to the club to continue their development programmes. With regular preseason games scheduled for the first teams could I encourage supporters to drop by the club to watch a game or two. Also, we welcome our new Football Development Manager, Andy Vernon, to the team. To find out a little bit more about Andy, go to page 9.

To ensure you’re aware of important dates and events could I encourage all club members and parents to keep an eye on the club website and noticeboard for updates.

Good luck to all club members involved in pre-season trials and a reminder for those who might benefit with some pre-season training.

Despite an early hiccup the junior and senior registration sites are now up and running, so

Neil’s and Rico’s holiday programmes were as busy as always with a great turn out from boys and girls. It was a hot week of football, with the high temperatures not dampening the spirits of such an enthusiastic bunch of football players. Children from four years upwards attended and were put through there paces by our creative coaches who made the mornings so much fun. The younger children were able to develop their skills through a selection of games including: cowboys and indians, sharks and minnows, and protect the cities, while they looked forward to the mini-tournament at the end of the each day! While the older children had lots of opportunities to practise their skills in competitive groups.

The children were keen to show off their skills with lots of juggling, around the worlds, and rabonas to be seen! One of the cool things to see was how well the children of different ages chatted and played with each other, while handshakes and a helping hand were offered whenever any overly enthusiastic challenges were made! There was a great amount of talent on show and as we look forward to the 2017 season, there are lots of children ready to entertain and show off their skills. I’ll look forward to catching up again with so many Springs children at our next holiday programmes in April!

17th Grade – Grant Russell – grant@harmonyhomes.co.nz

QUESTION: Which football team do you support and why? ANSWER: Growing up in Liverpool, UK, in the 1980’s, there was naturally only one team that I could support and thankfully it was the team my dad, Peter, supported. His love of the game got me hooked and after taking me to watch my first game against Stoke in 1983, I started going to watch the mighty Everton FC at Goodison Park on a regular basis. Over the next 4–5 years, I was fortunate enough to watch some great players in a successful team and have some great memories. I’m sure there are plenty of you that remember that era!! So for me, my dad is to blame for my love of Everton FC!

SUNDAY 5 MARCH 2017 (CLUB OPEN DAY)

BEFORE THE KICK-OFF TO THE 2017 SEASON, WE ARE ORGANISING A COLLECTION OF SECOND-HAND BOOTS IN GOOD CONDITION, TO BE GIFTED TO KIDS WHO NEED A BIGGER PAIR OF BOOTS FOR THE NEW SEASON. How it works: Upstairs in the clubhouse, you will find a boot collection box. Bring in your old boots (tied together by the laces) in a bag marked with the size. Drop them into the collection box. During the Club Open Day on Sunday 5 March you are invited to come along and select a pair of boots that will fit you/your child for the 2017 season. You can make a voluntary $5 donation if you take a pair of boots. Strictly one pair of boots per individual. The idea is to be able to pass on your old boots to others when they become too small, and in turn, you get to take a bigger pair for free. However, the offer of a free pair of boots is open to all families, whether you have an old pair to donate or not. Likewise, please feel free to donate old boots even if you do not want a pair in return. Any surplus boots will be donated to a club who needs them. 20 February 2017 www.wsafc.org.nz

Ask Andy any football-related question and a selection will be picked out and answered in next month’s newsletter. Email questions to fdm@wsafc.org.nz For this month’s and just to get us started I’ll pick the question… QUESTION: Which football team do you support and why? ANSWER: Growing up in Liverpool, UK, in the 1980’s, there was naturally only one team that I could support and thankfully it was the team my dad, Peter, supported. His love of the game got me hooked and after taking me to watch my first game against Stoke in 1983, I started going to watch the mighty Everton FC at Goodison Park on a regular basis. Over the next 4–5 years, I was fortunate enough to watch some great players in a successful team and have some great memories. I’m sure there are plenty of you that remember that era!! So for me, my dad is to blame for my love of Everton FC! Now it’s your turn to answer a question: Can you guess the name of the former Everton player that this young 7th grade player is pictured with in 1984? Hint: he made one appearance for England! The answer will appear in next month’s newsletter... www.wsafc.org.nz February 2017 9

This week former First Team and U19 player Sam Brotherton was given his first professional contract signing for Premier League team Sunderland AFC. The two and a half year deal which will be starting immediately as his International clearance is through. Sam will initially train and play in the U23 squad but whilst on trial he had two sessions with the First Team marking former England international Jermaine Defoe . It is very exciting news and a great step for the young player who has also represented FHM , Central United, Auckland City Youth team and Westlake Boys 1st XI during his development footballing journey in Auckland. “I have no doubts that Sam will grab this opportunity” said First Team Head Coach and DOF Neil Emblen, “Sam is one of the best learners and trainers that I have worked with, he is intelligent and absorbs tactics and pointers that make his a valuable playing commodity and this move to Sunderland just typifies that. I’m sure that he will go from strength to strength with full time training in this environment and even at 20 years old be pushing to add to the seven All Whites caps he has already got.” On the clubs Facebook page, Sam was his usual humble self adding that he was thankful for his two season stint he served at Seddon Fields and wished the club luck in the future. We will continue to monitor the progress of Sam and update in future ...watch this space.

You may need to continue with RICE for longer if pain or swelling persists. Contact your trusted health professional such as a physio or GP to make an appointment and confirm the diagnosis and provide you with a management plan. If you are diagnosed with an achilles rupture, you will need to make a decision as to whether surgery is the best option. Not all achilles tendon ruptures need to be surgically repaired. Depending on what you decide with your specialist your injury will either be conservatively managed (in a cast initially, followed by a equine moonboot) or surgically repaired. Once you are out of the moonboot and been cleared by your specialist for physio you can start ROM (Range of Movement) exercises and progress to cycling, strengthening exercises along with balance or proprioception exercises. Being patient is important and following a progressive return to work or return to play programme can reduce the risk of re-injury. How does Back to Your Feet Physio treat achilles tendon rupture injuries? You can complete all ACC documentation on the first visit and don’t need to see a doctor first. Most achilles tendon rupture injuries will be eligible for ACC and if this applies to your situation we can apply to ACC for cover on your behalf.

We can clinically diagnose achilles tendon rupture injuries, educate you on your options, and refer you for Diagnostic Ultrasound and to the best orthopedic specialists in New Zealand. We use soft tissue massage, mobilisations and exercise prescription to get you back to your feet. We will provide you with an individualised rehabilitation programme to help improve your range of movement, reduce your pain and improve the strength and length of your achilles tendon. We use video analysis to check your movement patterns and to provide feedback on how you can improve your movements to reduce the risk of being injured again.

Do a regular warm up that has strengthening and balancing exercises in it like the FIFA 11+. Get stronger – this helps with the ability to hold your foot and ankle in a better position when forces come through it. Improve your balance and proprioception – your sense of where you are in space – by balancing on one leg, doing it with your eyes closed and challenging your ability to feel where you are holding the knee and ankle in space can help. Where footwear appropriate to the conditions – too much grip can mean your foot gets stuck and the force can get transmitted up the leg to the ankle and the knee. Wear turf boots on turf rather than large cleats.

BASE Training – a bootcamp style injury prevention programme is a great way to reduce the risk of injuries and to return to back to sport.

Get fitter – fit teams win leagues but you also make more mistakes when you are tired. If you can cope with the demands of the game better you will reduce the risk of getting injured.

We are experienced at conservative management and post op rehabilitation of achillies injuries and returning athletes to play; ensuring they are strong and stable enough to return to the demands of their sport.

Do BASE Training (BTYF Physio’s own Balance And Strength Exercises Bootcamp style training programme) to improve your fitness, strength, balance and movement patterns. Book a class now!

We offer one on one end stage rehabilitation and on field testing and training drills to help build your confidence and control. So even if you had the injury a while back, if it doesn’t feel 100% come and see us and let us help you. Book an appointment now!

We are encouraging all our teams at WSAFC to do the FIFA 11+ or the ACC Sportsmart Warm up before all their trainings and games as it is a proven way to reduce injuries and prepare your body for high intensity exercises.

How do you prevent achilles tendon ligament injuries?

Suzie Belcher has joined our team and is looking after our Senior Women’s team this year, she brings a wealth of experience and I know we will appreciate her input this season. Katie is off in February with the New Zealand Ice Fernz team to their World Champs and will be back at the beginning of March.

Achilles tendon rupture injuries are costly in may ways – time off work and sport, healthcare costs and in loss of contact with team mates. Some research suggests we can reduce the risk of getting achilles tendon injuries.

THE GREAT WSAFC BOOT SWAP SUNDAY 5 MARCH 2017 (CLUB OPEN DAY)
