WE CATCH UP WITH ONE OF OUR GOLD SPONSORS, JEREMY SUTTON, TO SEE HOW HE IS ENJOYING THE SEASON Hi everyone, we’ve had a great start to the season. The kids are working hard at practice and gaining confidence. It’s awesome to see them on the field enjoying themselves and trying out their new skills. I hope you enjoyed the FIFA U20 World Cup. It was certainly an exciting event in our house and we braved a few games at North Harbour Stadium. The opening match against the Ukraine was amazing and Noah’s first experience being surrounded by 25,000 soccermad fans! You can see some real talent emerging in the All Whites team. They deserved the standing applause at the end.

The night game against USA was equally good, but a lot colder! USA played well and it showed in their convincing win. The final was a blast, we went in a group of 11, four dads and their kids. You can imagine the excitement. It wasn’t the best day for it but the kids surprised us by laughing about the rain. Our seats were near the very loud Serbian fans which really added to the atmosphere of the day. All in all, a pretty incredible experience. Enjoy the rest of the season!

FIFA WOMEN’S WORLD CUP Being involved with any New Zealand Football team is always a privilege, and the high performance environment of the Football Ferns, the New Zealand Senior Women’s team is one of the pinnacles of the sport. I was invited to join the team for the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup campaign whilst away with Auckland City at the end of 2014 as the incumbent physiotherapists were due to take parental leave at the time of the tournament. I started with the team after I had finished with Auckland City season in April. My role was to attend trainings to prepare the players for training, conduct rehabilitation at training, and attend to any injuries sustained during trainings. The role included liaising with the other physiotherapists who are involved with the team (High Performance Sport New Zealand physiotherapists, Catherine Porteous, Anna Barlow, and Jen Sayer) the medical staff from HPSNZ and Axis Sports Medicine, coaching staff and the sport scientist (WSAFC’s talented Harriet Steele). The medical team during the WWC in Canada included Dr Chris Hanna, a sports physician, myself, and Catherine Porteous. At the start of the tour, all players were available for selection, although a couple of players did start the tour with minor injuries which is not unusual. The team toured Japan before heading to Vancouver where I joined them for the warm up game against Australia. Statistics were kept on the number of trainings players were able to complete, injuries, number of treatments, rubs, strappings and medical contacts.

Because the WWC was to be played on turf the team had trained on artificial turf. The artificial turf in the various training facilities and stadiums did vary, and were different from WSAFC turf with the grass being shorter and most of the turf had a shock pad underneath. The surfaces were watered prior to the trainings by a vehicle with a water sprayer on the back to try and quicken the pace of the turf. We did have one injury that could be attributed to the turf when a player got their studs caught and rolled her ankle, making her unavailable for the China game. Recovery strategies employed during the tournament were the responsibility of Harry (Harriet Steele, sports scientist) and included ice baths, nutritional and hydration strategies, foam rolling and stretching sessions. The Physiotherapists contributed with recovery rubs. The daily routine usually consisted of waking up and exercising before breakfast, then preparing the team for training; travelling to training, training, then travelling back and having lunch at the hotel. Most days we would train only once, with some free time in the afternoon for the players along with time set aside for treatments and naps. There were also team meetings, dinner, more treatments after dinner and a staff meeting planning for the next day. Treatments were wrapped up by 10.30pm so players could sleep, and then there was time for a staff catch up before heading to bed around midnight. Variations to the routine would happen on travel days or match days and the schedule was planned well enough that there was time to relax and recharge batteries! The Football Ferns were a great team on and off the pitch, and I thoroughly enjoyed the tournament. Hopefully, I will be able to continue to contribute to the team as they turn their focus to the 2016 Olympics qualifying campaign and tournament in Rio.

THE PEQUENOS STEP UP TO THE PLATE On Sunday the 7th of July Three Kings United held their annual tournament for the 8th and 9th grade mixed teams. 8th Grade Western Spring Pequenos (‘little ones’ in Spanish) were very keen on finding out how they would do against other 8th grade rep teams. The weather was in a typical Auckland mood, very sunny, then rainy, cold, sunny, rainy, windy etc. Only the parents on the sidelines were complaining, as the kids themselves were far too busy playing football to notice. The first game in the pool was against Fencibles Celtics, a team that beat us 7–3 at last year’s tournament. It was a 6-a-side game, with big(-ish) goals but no goalkeepers. The Pequenos tried

10 July 2015 www.wsafc.org.nz

to play a passing game and build up from the back, and got off to a good start when a great pass by Ben gave Jack an easy tap in goal. Fencibles chose a different approach, with long balls. With the big goals and no goal keepers this proved to work well for them, and soon we were trailing behind. Then a shot on target by Jack got hand balled out of the goal in true Suarez-style. No sending off required here, but it was a penalty for the Pequenos. No goalkeeper though, so this must have been the easiest penalty ever scored! Never mind, they were back in the game. Raneel then scored

another goal, and entertained the crowd with his goal celebration. Unfortunately it was not enough, as a late kick from the halfway line proved to be the winning goal for Fencibles: 4–3 loss! Very close, and much better than the year before at least. Next time we’ll get them! Now it was time for a win. This time we played Oratia Juventus. The Pequenos stepped up, and quickly made it clear that this game was theirs. Charli scored two excellent goals early in the game, followed by Gaspard from a very tight angle. Solid defending by Louis, Enzo and Ben didn’t give Oratia many chances, and they managed to score just one goal.

Enzo, Raneel and Jack added more goals on Pequenos side, and it ended in a comfortable 7–1 win. We were now looking forward to the big game in our pool, against the home side Three Kings United Green. This was the TKU 8th grade first rep team. We (= the parents) knew we (= the kids) had to win this one to progress to the cup semi-finals. TKU had a very good team, with players that were able to put a string of passes together. They also seemed to be taller overall than our little ones, so either they are all born early in the year, or our kids need to make sure they start finishing their broccoli and spinach. TKU scored a couple of early goals, and the Pequenos were chasing as best as they could. After being down 4–1 we managed to claw back to 5–4, with two very strong goals from Ben. Louis, Toby and Enzo were determined to not let any more players through while we were trying to score more goals, but then the ref blew the whistle for the end of the game. It was not enough to continue to the championship, but it was another close game against a

strong team, that finished first in the pool with three wins.

our money. They looked like a different team!

Now our new goal was to win the plate instead, as we didn’t want to go home empty-handed!

Then, Tom found a way through their defence, and we went into halftime just 1–0 up.

In the semi-finals for the plate another TKU team was waiting for us, TKU Blue. The Pequenos thought they had to go deep to pull off a win this time. TKU kicked off, and out of nowhere came Raneel chasing them down and winning the ball. Before anybody realised what was happening he made a run for it and scored 1–0, within six seconds after kickoff!

The second half it was all over for Oratia, after Tom scored his second goal from the side line. Now the Pequenos were all over them, and with a couple of great assists by Toby more goals followed by Gaspard, Raneel, Enzo and Jack. With Enzo’s goal a defender tried to handball it out of the goal, but he hit it even harder into the goal instead.

Raneel even scored another one shortly after. TKU could not recover from this, and even though the Pequenos scored an unlucky own goal, they continued where they left off, by scoring two more by Jack. The Pequenos were excited that they had another game lined up, the Plate finals. When we found out we were playing the same team again that we beat in our pool before, we were very confident it would be an easy win again.

At prize giving the Pequenos looked very proud and happy, and they were doing high fives with the kids from the other teams while they collected their trophy. The golden boot was won by Jack with eight goals. Three Kings United Green won the Cup after beating Buckland Beach 5–2 in the finals. All in all a very enjoyable day, and the kids are looking forward to their next games already!

However, Oratia was very motivated to do better this time, and gave us a real run for

MEN’S FIRST TEAM REPORT How I’ve seen it... Player of Season so far: Ben Bruyat – Outstanding in both Defence and Midfield. A ball winner and ball player rolled into one. Rarely you get both these attributes. Young Player of the Season so far: Myer Crane – has shown outstanding attitude and skill base for an 18 year old. It has been a mission of mine to sign Myer back to the club since I joined and it’s been worth the wait. Welcome home Myer! George Debenham certainly deserves a mention and will continue to push Myer all the way. I’m hoping these boys enjoyed watching the Under 20 World Cup, as I can visualise them and Oscar Ramsay being at the forefront of the next campaign. Find of the Season so far: Ben Bruyat – French Defender/Midfielder turned up through a recommendation (Matt Munford wants to take the credit!) and has been amazing all season. Unfortunately, he is travelling in the South Island now before heading back to France in August so will not be available for the remainder of the season. Goal of the Season so far: 1. 18 year old Oscar Ramsay’s world class volley v East Coast Bays in April. 2. Sam Burfoot’s scorching 1st Free kick v Melville in May. 3. George Debenham’s stunning touch and instant volley v TKU in June. Most Memorable Match so far: Melville at home 5–3 win . Melville came up to Auckland determined to get their opening points of the season and went into an early 1–0 lead. We then had about 10 guilt edge chances before we eventually clawed a goal back from a corner just before half time. Myer Crane was the man to force it home. In the 2nd half it wasn’t for the faint hearted. We extended our lead through a 2nd Myer Crane strike only to be pegged back through poor set piece marking to 2–2. With 12 minutes left, we again led through an unbelievable 40 yard knuckleball Sam Burfoot strike only for Melville to again score 20 seconds later, again from poor marking and naive defending. The genius Burfoot then showed us all, that he can also curl free kicks into the top corner to extend our lead with five minutes remaining and we wrapped up the goal fest in injury time with a well worked team goal scored by Arnold Kochasira. Steve Williams, the Melville coach and myself agreed in our speeches it was a great spectacle with some superb goals to boot! Tackle of the Season so far: Josh Gair takes this one out with a hum dinging ball and all challenge against Eastern 12 July 2015 www.wsafc.org.nz

Suburbs. It was never really in doubt that either Josh, Maurie, Ritchie or Patch would take this category out! Unluckiest Player of the Season so far: Jacob Mathews run of bad injuries unfortunately continued. After signing in the off season from Metro FC, Jake broke/dislocated and ruptured ligaments in his left ankle in the 7th game of the season. We wish you a full speedy recovery Jake. Worst Banter of the Season so far: Sam Burfoot – for his theme of the week choice being you have to turn up to the game with painted finger nails!! Each week we pick a player that sets a theme of the week challenge that the rest of the squad have to adhere to. It can be as simple as bringing a piece of fruit (different to the rest of the squad) to Sam’s ridiculous theme! Fines go into a kitty for the same theme or not taking part in the theme. Best Victory so far: To end the 25 game unbeaten run of current champions Glenfield Rovers. The boys ran riot all day and although the result was only a 2–1 score line, it was totally deserved and really boosted the confidence of the side. Glenfield have invested heavily in quality National League players and we were not intimidated by them or the occasion at McFetridge Park. You don’t luckily go on a 25 game unbeaten run without being a good team. So it was a terrific all round performance from the boys. Worst Performance so far: The 7–1 defeat away at Hamilton Wanderers. We could make excuses of not having influential players available that day, but it was a lack lustre showing that was good learning for our young crop. We didn’t dwell on the defeat but we all knew regardless of how far we had come over the past two seasons, that this performance was unacceptable. Overall assessment: We have been very competitive in 90% of our games so far and with just a little luck in those opening eight games we could have been sitting in the top three at this stage. We have nine very exciting fixtures left and the players are hitting form at a good time. The players and club are enjoying the higher level of opponent/club at Seddon Fields and it’s been great to showcase the region’s best clubs. Sam Burfoot and Darren White joined mid season from Auckland City after winning the Oceania Champions League and have bought that form into the Springs set up. George Debenham, Myer Crane, Rossi Nkoy and Arnold Kochasira have all come into very good form and as a rotating front four are terrorising defences with skill and pace.

Defensively we have improved also of late but reinforcements in front of in form stopper Adam McDonald are a priority before deadline day if we are to still push for a higher league position. Unfortunately, the Chatham Cup dream is over after a very unkind draw in the last 64. We were convincingly beaten 4–1 away to Eastern Suburbs who are currently the best team in the Premier League. I think that while I have been involved at the club we have played six ties in the Cup and five of those have been drawn away. Hopefully our luck changes next season. The Olywhites squad has also just been named and we are delighted as a club to have Sam Burfoot and Sam Brotherton selected to travel for the qualifiers in PNG. We look forward to having them back mid July. Our extremely young Reserve side are sitting in 3rd place in their league and although we had a mid season slump we are back on track now after winning our last three games. 15 year old Paulo Korkman and 16 year

old Joshua Brame and Frankie Busfield have been very consistent performers all year. 16 year old GK Elliot Munford has been outstanding and has certainly been the most consistent player in that team so far. Very good prospects are pushing 1st team players for places and experiencing good senior football so the environment remains competitive whilst having good unity amongst each other. All to play for, so get along and watch us when you can, as it’s great to have the club members behind us. I must say I have be blown away by the support both home and away so far and I thank you all for your support. Nine wins to go! Kind regards.

JACOB MATHEWS, ALL ROUND GREAT LAD... UNLUCKIEST PLAYER EVER! I had been an admirer of Jake’s ability since I saw him as a 15 year old 1st XI player for AGS. With great movement, dribbling skills and low centre of gravity, Jake would effortlessly glide past opponents creating havoc! He represented New Zealand at the 2007 Under 17 World Cup in Korea before also being involved in the OFC Olympic qualifiers in Tahiti in 2009. I eventually signed Jake for the first time in 2008 when I was coaching at Waitakere United and Jake helped a very successful National Youth League team to some silverware and represented the senior team at a tender age too. It was shortly after this date where his injury woes really started and eventually succumbed to medical advice not to play again and have an operation to fuse his lower back. In 2013, four years after the successful operation, Jake was enticed to Metro FC to be player/coach of the NRFL Division 1 outfit and although the coaching seemed a very steep learning curve, I was keeping an eye on his playing and monitoring his minutes to see if he could once again perform to a high level.

14 July 2015 www.wsafc.org.nz

After several chats and a decision for Metro to release him of his coaching duties he put pen to paper and signed for the Springs in March this year. Jacob’s season was unfortunately short lived when his injury curse struck again when in only our 7th game of the season, he broke and dislocated his left ankle leaving us all heartbroken for him. It looks like at least a nine month lay off for Jake and, from myself and all the boys, we wish him and his new business venture at the ‘Botanist’ the very best of luck. Jake, as always continues to be the leader in the banter stakes through social media between the boys and this happy go lucky chap always puts a smile to my face when I see him. Pop in and see him at the Botanist... I’m sure he will brighten up your day too. WSAFC Member Offer: Any WSAFC member who pops in for a coffee, will get a kids fluffy on the house!

and a full bar featuring Peroni and Brothers Beer on tap, a range of top quality wines, and a range of organic sodas from Karma Cola. Weeknights and at the weekends, The Botanist is available to hire for events of all shapes and sizes, up to 80 people. From 21st birthday parties, to PR and media launches, surprise parties and engagements, The Botanist can cater to every need and taste, offering finger food such as pan-seared scallops and rare beef crostinis, or the more laidback pizzas and toasties option. The Botanist is a café and florist situated in the City Works Depot in Auckland CBD. Having recently celebrated their first birthday, The Botanist has risen from strength to strength, growing not only in popularity, but also across its range of services on offer over the last year. Joint owners, Anthony Browne and Jacob Mathews (who also manages the café) have set the bar for modern and sophisticated casual dining and service. Keep an eye out for both who are often seen making coffees and serving customers, providing just one more way this café is different from others in Auckland City – not pretentious, but still every bit pristine.

The merging of café and florist not only provides a sensory overload of setting, sights, smells and tastes, but also takes all the hard work out of your busy schedule, allowing you to settle in for a coffee catch-up, pick up a healthy, wholesome lunch, and make someone’s day (or your own!) with a bunch of seasonal flowers or a luscious plant.

Staying true to their fuss-free ethos, The Botanist offers an intimate, lush and modern setting for a quick coffee, a sit down lunch, or an after work drink. Florist Eden Hessell works from inside the shop, creating seasonal, modern and unique bouquets for events, order, or for purchase from the shop floor. Eden can cater to events of all sizes, from weddings, to media events and flower styling. Eden’s work is highly reputable, with her services seen in Fashion Quarterly Magazine, the wedding of New Zealand musician David Dallas, and the Media Awards. Best known for their seasonal gourmet salads, and unique, simple and clean menu, designed by award-winning chef Sara Simpson. The Botanist buzzes with city dwellers, familiar faces, and some of Auckland’s biggest names from morning to night. Serving Three Beans and Allpress Coffee, fresh and seasonal juices and smoothies, and classic food to dine in or take out, The Botanist caters to all tastes and diets, be you a buckwheat porridge type of person, or more partial to the all- American Corned Beef Rueben Sandwich. At nighttime, The Botanist turns into a low-key and intimate venue for after work drinks, serving up simple bar food www.wsafc.org.nz July 2015 15

THE WSAFC BULLETS GUN DOWN OPPOSITION IN BAY OLYMPIC TOURNAMENT The Western Springs Bullets had an early start to their Sunday with a trip to Crum Park for Bay Olympic’s 11th grade tournament. With the first game scheduled for 9am the boys arrived eager to get started and began match preparations with great enthusiasm. Drawn in what was termed ‘the group of death’, some tough games awaited them. First up was a game against Eastern Suburbs Yellows. After a bright start, both teams traded blows before a fine passing move ended with Cam Southgate side footing home. A second goal followed shortly after with Karl Place getting his first of the tournament after fine build up play from Rio Irvan and Aidan Price down the left. Cooper Malofie-Law patrolled the midfield with a growing authority, hunting down any opponents that dared to show any attacking intent. Luca Aitken added a third goal to cap a solid team performance. The team’s appetite for an opening victory was celebrated with a combination of chicken drumsticks, sandwiches and H2O! After a quick turnaround, next up was one of the stronger teams from across the Harbour Bridge, East Coast Bays. This was to give the Bullets an opportunity to demonstrate their growing positive attitude and intensity towards the defensive side of their game. They soaked up some early pressure from East Coast, with the defence being well organised by Marco Irvan and Tadhg Collie. Following some resolute defending the Bullets countered quickly with Matthew Cunnington, Cooper, Cam and Rio passing and moving the ball up the field to release the pacy Luca Aitken down the right. He cleverly beat his man and crossed perfectly for Karl to finish off at the back post. The boy’s celebrations demonstrated their delight at scoring a great team goal. Into the second half the Bullets continued to press for a second and but for a ‘worldie’ from the goalkeeper, Karl would have had his second from a long range shot arrowing towards the top corner. As the clock ticked down the Bullets controlled the game and were clearly delighted at the final whistle.

16 July 2015 www.wsafc.org.nz

The Bullets then went into their last group game knowing a draw would clinch top space but anything less may bring the drama of goal difference or the toss of a coin to decide qualifying positions. A strong Greenhithe team awaited them in the final group game. This game was again fiercely competitive with both teams recognising the importance. Defences were on top, with Aidan having little to do in goal while Rio was finding chances hard to come by at the other end. However, with ten minutes to go a Greenhithe forward swivelled on the ball before unleashing a powerful shot into the bottom corner of the Bullet’s net. What could the Bullets do? They stayed calm and tried to create chances with a close range header by Karl shaving the post. As the final whistle sounded the Bullets were gathered with their coach, Andy, for a team talk. A couple of minutes later when the final whistle sounded on the next pitch it became clear that placings would be decided by goal difference – the calculators were out! Unfortunately, the Bullets were pushed into third place on goal difference and so progressed into the Plate quarter final. The boys then had a good opportunity to recharge their batteries, run-down batteries on iPads and have some fun with their mates! The quarter finals pitched them onto the turf against a strong Fencibles team, who themselves missed out on the Championship by the toss of a coin. The boys went into the game with a renewed focus, clearly intent on taking their place as Plate winners at the closing ceremony. But could they? Again, Andy made a couple of changes to the starting team, but Tadhg continued to organise the defence and show great composure when passing out from the back. The full backs, Matthew and Miles Ellis, looked to support the attack at every opportunity and were involved early on. George Beca, pushed into a more advanced midfield role, had a growing influence on the game and it was he who cleverly assisted the opening goal. He ran at the defender, before playing a great wall pass with Aidan, and

supplied a perfect cross for Karl to calmly finish from close range. The Bullets began to dominate the second half and more great work by George, pressing his opponent deep in their half led to another cool finish from Karl. Confidence was restored and the semi-final awaited! The boys were back onto the grass to play the South Auckland Panthers, winners in a penalty shoot-out. With a quick turn around, there was a great physical demand on the boys but they were clearly up for the challenge, happy to take on new positions for the benefit of the team. They dominated the possession but it took them five minutes before their pressure paid off. A long range shot from Cooper was deflected and our very own predator, Karl, was perfectly placed to add another goal to his tally. Aidan, who was a creative influence throughout the day, added his first goal with a neatly taken shot. Into the second half, Miles played a great one-two with Matthew before finishing superbly with his right foot. Rio then scored the goals that his performance deserved, finishing off another fine team move after a cross from George, and then bursting the net with a thunderbolt of a strike. 5–0 to the Bullets and a greatly deserved place in the final awaited!

The final pitted the Bullets against Eastern Suburbs Yellows, whom they beat in the day’s opening game. Could the Bullets repeat their opening win or would the Yellows gain revenge? As the kick-off approached, Andy, again, spoke with the boys and reminded them of the targets set at the start of the day. They were 30 minutes away from a victorious finale to their day. Five minutes in and the Bullets had flown into a 2–0 lead courtesy of two great through balls and calm finishing with Karl and Cam each assisting and finishing off a goal apiece. Karl then added a third after super build up play from Miles. The Bullets continued to dominate the second half scoring some super team goals and despite tiring legs they kept a fifth clean sheet of the day. Aidan added a fourth goal with a bullet header, Karl a fifth, Luca the sixth, Aidan scored his second after super approach play from Tadhg, before Luca appropriately finished the game off with a ‘bullet’ eighth goal. The boys were delighted and had finished off a great day in style. The Bullets had won five, lost one, scored 19 and conceded one. Throughout the day the boys were cheered on, as always, by supportive parents and they now look forward to the WSAFC 11th grade tournament on Sunday 12th July!

SEASON SNAPSHOT With grading being completed now for most grades, it’s an ideal opportunity for us to have a look at the teams who have been doing well so far this season. 9th Grade Vitesse and Forza have both made it into Premier Division while Porto and the two 8th Grade teams who are playing up in 9th Grade (Pequenos and Ligero have both made it into Division 1B. 10th Grade Nero have made it into Premier Division finishing third while Blanco and Verde have made Division 1. In the girls hubs, Diamonds have been promoted into Hub 1 and our new 9th Grade girls team playing up in 10th Grade AFF (The Sapphires) will be playing in Hub 3. 11th Grade Bullets have made it into Premier Division finishing second behind ES while Falcons and Regulators have both made Division 1. Congratulations. Sportivo have made Division 1 and the Emeralds (10th Grade playing up) have been placed in Division 3. 12th Grade With Firebolts no longer in 12th Grade the job fell to Sonics to secure Prem status which they have done. Well Done. Espanyol have been placed in Division 1A and Venom in Division 1B. For the girls teams Monaco are in Division 1 finishing second behind Ellerslie and Milan Div2/Malaga in Div 3. 13th Grade Cruzeiro have finished forth in their grading pool and that has ensured entry into Metro for the balance of 2015. They await the draw which will be coming out soon. Firebolts finished top of Division 1 and that has meant that they will fight for honours in Conference while Vespas who finished 2nd behind Firebolts will contend in Div 1. Chelsea, in the girls side, secured Premier status also finishing forth. 18 July 2015 www.wsafc.org.nz

14th Grade Los Merengues have had a difficult start to the season with a string of injuries and some tough games. They currently sit fifth with three wins including a 9–0 win over Ellerslie last weekend. Galacticos finished fifth and have secured a spot in Division 1. 15th Grade Black Swans are sitting in third position on five wins and well poised to push for second or better. For the boys Tornadoes sit second behind Papatoetoe who are on equal points. 17th Grade White Stripes went through the grading round unbeaten and were joined by Black Magic in Premier Division. Stripes are currently sitting at forth position after a loss to Eastern Suburbs on the weekend so lots of work to do now to get back to pole position.

COERVER HOLIDAY PROGRAMME JULY This week we saw over 130 kids per day take part in the Coerver Holiday Programme at Seddon Fields. They enjoyed all four seasons including some thunder and lightning on Tuesday as well as icy blasts on Thursday but were undaunted and enthusiastic and took the opportunity to further their skills in a great environment. A great week was had by all.
