P4 NOTICEBOARD With the season now well underway, it’s pleasing to see so many WSAFC teams performing well in their respective leagues. If the weather continues to play ball and teams retain their form, I’m sure we’ll see a good number of league titles going to WSAFC teams. Keep an eye out for WSAFC Stingers, Inter Paris and Chevaliers who are all currently sitting top of the table. Our Men’s First Team continue to battle hard for their position in the Premier Division with just 2 points (at the time of writing) separating the bottom 5 teams. It’s going to be a battle all the way to the tape. Our youthful squad with many players having national and school commitments has meant Neil’s used 30+ players in the games to date! Not sure any other team would have gone close to that sort of turnover. Fortunately Rico’s Women’s First Team is faring better, sitting 3rd equal on the table with a game in hand. Three Kings are some way out in front but I’m sure there’s a plan a foot to close the gap. I would encourage all those who have not yet come to watch the women play, to put the effort in, as they’re certainly worth the visit.
With our new sponsorship agreement with Fuji, you will hopefully have noticed new branding on our ‘toblerone’ pitch dividers. Now that we’ve completed the Fuji branding, it’s important the dividers are kept in good order so please avoid sitting on them and importantly remind our visitors if you see them sitting on them. Some positive news with council and MOTAT looking to start work shortly on building further car parks on the vacant land above the clubrooms. We’ll send more information in time but hopefully this will remove the need to park on busy Meola Rd. Also a shout out to those teams involved in some excellent club derby’s which I’ve managed to watch of late. Great games played in the right spirit. Well done to all involved.

Enjoy the season everyone. Cheers, Jeremy.
THE 11TH GRADE EMERALDS WERE VERY PRIVILGED TO HAVE CURRENT FOOTBALL FERN DAISY CLEVERLEY TAKE ONE OF THEIR TRAINING SESSION LAST MONTH. Daisy a former WSAFC club member and alumni of Western Springs College made her senior début for New Zealand in 2014. She has been a member of the New Zealand U-17 side at the 2012 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Azerbaijan and again at the 2014 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Costa Rica. She was part of New Zealand’s team at the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Canada and is aiming to make the team for Rio. Daisy spoke to the girls about her experiences playing for New Zealand and answered lots of questions! She showed the girls her amazing ball skills and ran a great training session. Thanks Daisy.

lifted for the knockout stages with a strong 3–0 win in the quarterfinal, followed by a 3–1 win in the Semi Final against the TKU A team. This Final was against the Ellerslie A team. Vipers dominated the first half and showed amazing courage, but an unlucky goal against the run of play saw the team go 1–0 down at half time. Six hours of football paid the ultimate toll and the second half saw the Vipers end up Runners-up in the Plate. A very courageous and inspiring effort by this fantastic team. Well done Vipers!

Team Name Background
Biggest Rivals
Mainly born out of the need for a name other than the manager’s surname. Steamboats was mainly to be a bit different, think we nailed that.
None really as we’ve played in a huge variety of comps over the years. We had some great tussles with the Fatboys for a number of years in which I think we came out about roughly even, but have been in different grades for a long time now.

Groups and Schedule
Over 30’s Division 2, although we’ve got two players over 50, and a bunch of us celebrated our 40ths some time ago, so we’re definitely the ‘old boys’ of the division. When were you founded and your team origins The original Steamboats played in 1987 when we were still at school and there are four ‘originals’ from that side in the team. Since then we’ve had a cavalcade of players come and go, although we’ve had a solid core of about 10 or 11 for the last 15 years. We’ve played at a mixture of clubs, starting off at Uni-Mt after leaving school then a brief flirtation with Ellerslie, an extended stay at Three Kings, before gracing Western Springs with our presence in 2006. Anybody who has joined after the year 2010 is still considered to be on an extended trial. www.wsafc.org.nz June 2016 13
Team Rituals and Traditions Steamboat of the Day is our weekly ritual post game with everyone (supporters included) voting and with the winner receiving a double shot of their least favourite spirit. We also do a Manager of the Week who has to do all the important things like organize the team and bring beers. Magic Moments There have been a few times where we’ve put in great displays to beat teams we’ve struggled to defeat previously, but the most satisfying moment would be beating Bay Olympic 3–1 on the last day of the season to clinch the Open Div 2 title about 10 years ago. We did a lot of hard work to get to that point so to step up and bag the win when we needed it was pretty special.

lightning can strike up to 17km from the rain shaft! All storms travel at different speeds so it is important you act quickly. To be safe, follow the 30/30 rule. If you see lightning, count the time until you hear the thunder. If it is less than 30 seconds seek shelter in the clubrooms and wait for 30 minutes before returning to the field of play AFTER THE LAST CLAP OF THUNDER OR LIGHTNING STRIKE. In the absence of a solid building, a car with a solid roof and the windows up would be better than staying outdoors (although be careful not to touch the sides of the car). Do not use the showers or plumbing facilities during a thunderstorm. If somebody does get struck by lightning, they do not carry the electrical charge and it is important to call for help (111), ask for the ambulance and tell them the person has been struck by lightning and start CPR as soon as possible. Remember we have a defribrillator located upstairs on the balcony of the clubrooms.

The weather recently has been wet and wild and we have had a couple of thunderstorms recently. It brings up the question… when should we call off training and seek shelter? Obviously, different conditions require different responses, but I have outlined below what should be our response as a club to different conditions when we are at Seddon Fields, along with some things to think about if you are playing away.

WSAFC has led the way in Auckland in the development of a world class facility and club with a clear focus on youth development and strong leadership at all levels. Fuji Xerox celebrates great leadership in organisations and it is a natural fit for Fuji Xerox to sponsor Western Springs Football Association and look forward to the partnership.

A warm sunny day greeted the five WSAFC teams competing at the 11th and 12th Grade tournament at Easter Suburbs. Kids and parents were all excited and ready for the long day of football ahead, hoping to come home with the glory of a championship, or at least a sausage from the local stall. The mighty 12th Grade Vipers were in a tough pool with some good quality teams. The pool play saw two very close loses and a comprehensive win over the home club. This placed the Vipers into 3rd place which put them in a knockout for the Plate. The team

lifted for the knockout stages with a strong 3–0 win in the quarterfinal, followed by a 3–1 win in the Semi Final against the TKU A team.

Competition you are currently playing in Over 30’s Division 2, although we’ve got two players over 50, and a bunch of us celebrated our 40ths some time ago, so we’re definitely the ‘old boys’ of the division. 14 June 2016 www.wsafc.org.nz

Biggest Rivals
Our team name was borrowed from GO FEET Records (a 1980s ska music label). Since then it has been the name behind many successful senior 11-a-side, 7-a-side, indoor and youth football teams.
Bay Olympic Clowns, Mount Albert Ponsonby Lions, Ellerslie (back in the day)
Competition you are currently playing in
Someone brings a box of beers to away games.
Over 30s Division 1
After the game as players leave, those remaining mercilessly critique their performance.
When were you founded and your team origins GO FEET was founded as an indoor football team at Western Springs College in 1986 (yes, we have been around longer than WSAFC). Shaun Perry was the original founder and is still part of our management team and current playing squad. We have been fortunate over the years to attract a steady stream of quality players including many ex WSAFC and other First Team players (we’re a bit like a flash retirement home).
Team Rituals and Traditions A strict two Argentinian player quota.
Recent Magic Moments Winning 2015 Over 30s Division 1 title. Winning 2014 Masters Cup. Winning 2015/2016 Premier 7-a-side Competition to make it 5 titles in a row.

PROUD TO AND BE PHYSIOTHERAPIST OF CHOICE FOR THUNDER LIGHTNING SPRINGS AFC AND ALLWESTERN THINGS FRIGHTENING! Hey Team,
Contact Justin on 021 673 732
www.backtoyourfeet.health.nz
Clinic is located upstairs at Western Springs Pavilion, Seddon Fields, 108 Meola Rd
Lightning Stefan Petrovski, an Australian goalkeeper playing in Malaysia was struck by lightning and killed in May this year (http://www.dailymail. co.uk/news/article-3568087/Australiangoalkeeper-Stefan-Petrovski-dies-Malaysia-hitlightning.html). Last year in Canada I was with the Football Ferns when we were playing Canada and the game was stopped for 30 mins while a lightning storm passed overhead. You can determine how close the storm is by counting the time in between the thunder and lightning, and
lightning can strike up to 17km from the rain shaft!
As always, we are here to help and if you would like to make an appointment please text Katie 02102345503, Aleshia 0278915545 or myself on 021673732 or you can book online http://nzappts.gensolve.com/back_to_your_feet_physio Look forward to seeing you on the sideline.
Stay on your feet,
Justin Lopes
