WSAFC EVENTS CALENDAR JULY 2016 Mon 11

Hi all This July is shaping up as a really big and busy month for both our Mens and Women’s First Teams with a number of cracking home games to look forward to. After the delays with the Chatham Cup Round 2 debacle, Neil’s boys will welcome a solid month of fixtures starting with a 3rd Round home Chatham Cup tie with Birkenhead followed by three crucial NRFL games two of which will be played at home. Also this month Rico’s Girls are into the last eight of the National Knockout Cup with a home fixture against Glenfield, and later face League leaders Three Kings in a top of the table clash.

I would also like to reinforce our vision of valuing youth. It is such a thrill and very exciting to see our good young players being given opportunities at the club and then even better to see them go on and get National recognition or even international opportunities as in the case of Myer Bevan. This month eight of our boys have been selected for the NZ U20 camp and with a further two on standby and four selected for the NZ U17 camp this is a simply outstanding result for these boys and for Neil and Zoro. C’mon Springs!!

We’re working with New Zealand Football, the seven regional football federations and clubs around the country to encourage parents to nominate the coach of their kid’s team. Nominations are encouraged for positive behaviour both on and off the pitch, including supporting players positively from the touch line, introducing new players to the game and helping out in their local community. There will be seven regional winners, who will receive a coaching equipment pack to use for training and games. We’ll then pick a national winner, who will receive an amazing football experience, travelling to Japan to see Auckland City FC play in the FIFA Club World Club. Nominations can be made by visiting www.nzfootball.co.nz/juniors and downloading the nomination form. Nominations will be open until 12 August, with the regional winners to be announced the following week and the national winner on 26 August. You may have already seen the coach of the year tray mats in restaurant and we will have content on digital community screens shortly. NZ Football is promoting the competition to its database of over 200,000 football players and supporters, we are pitching national and local media stories, it will be supported on social media channels, and we have some great video content of All Whites

As part of McDonald’s Junior Football this year we will be celebrating the 6000+ volunteer coaches, who help 50,000 Kiwi kids enjoy football each season. The McDonald’s Junior Football Coach of the Year will be a nationwide search for New Zealand’s most deserving junior coach.

The team played quality football with every member of the team contributing. Neve Dobson, Aimee Lamont, Jess McHardy, Jess Lord, Bella Cranefield and Anija Irvine all scored goals with great defence from Hope Nomani and Charlie Duffy. Nicole Ng, Jess McHardy, Charlie Duffy and Bella Cranefield were great in goal throughout the day.

On the 12th of June the 11th Grade Emeralds participated in the Forrest Hill Milford Girls Tournament. Three tough pool games were played starting off with a scoreless draw followed by two convincing wins to finish pool play unbeaten. The semifinal saw us pitched against a strong Three Kings team. We emerged victorious with a 2–1 win progressing to the final. In the final we played Eastern Suburbs the team we had drawn with in the first pool game. Once again this was a tough hard fought game

and Football Ferns talking about their memories of their junior coaches. The federations will also be using their channels to create awareness and get clubs engaged. The coach of the year competition is a great build on the work McDonald’s already does, helping provide resources to encourage more kids and parents to get involved with football. It’s also a perfect proof point in our Journey For Good, to show we are doing the right things for New Zealand families. The coaches represent a great opportunity to build advocacy for the support McDonald’s provides, and this is the first time there has been a national competition to celebrate the great work they do. Once the competition is over we will be looking to profile the winners, and the number of kids who played this season in the seven federations around the country, with an above the line media campaign. If you have any questions or comments, don’t hesitate to contact me. Cheers, Simon Kenny Head of Communications McDonald’s Restaurants (NZ) Ltd email: simon.kenny@nz.mcd.com mob: 027 482 7692

WSAFC Ligero played their first tournament of 2016 at Onehunga-Mangere on 12 June. Most of the boys had never played a tournament before so they approached it with excitement and trepidation.

In the pool the boys were feeling their way and gave up a goal early in each of the first three games – they fought back each time to salvage two draws but the 3rd game resulted in a 2–1 loss. Against a weaker team in game four, Ligero started to get their confidence up and won, thus qualifying for the Plate Quarter Finals. A comprehensive victory versus Waitemata resulted in a semi-final rerun of a pool game

against Birkenhead United Busters. An enthralling tussle ensued and the game of the day was won only after a brilliant save from Jack in goal and a well taken penalty from Callum. The final never really looked in doubt against Hibiscus Coast and Ligero cruised to a 3–1 victory. The boys were exhausted after their big day but travelled home on a real high. As always when this team plays, every player contributed throughout the day. Overall, Ligero played seven, won four, drew two and lost one. Goals for 17, against 7. Bring on the next tournament!

P10 JEREMY SUTTON ADVENTURE TO THE COPA AMERICA! Jeremy had a great trip to the Copa America. He went to six games including the final over 16 days mainly in New York and Boston. There were 16 teams from America and South America with Argentina and Messi being the favourite. Alexis Sanchez from Chile and Brazil was player of the tournament. The teams played possession based football relying on scoring on the break with one touch football and moving the ball in wide areas. Whenever Messi or Sanchez got the ball, they were surrounded by multiple players and were often fouled quickly.

Argentina on penalties. The supporters were very vocal compared to other countries. This competition gets no coverage in the media apart from being on ESPN but is well worth going to and following. Looking forward to being back at Seddon Fields and watching my boy Noah play for the Toros in the 9th grade! Thanks for supporting the Facebook competition we have run! Jeremy Sutton Barrister

Chile and Argentina were in a different league from the other teams. Mexico which had been unbeaten for 22 games, were thrashed v7-0 by Chile in the quarterfinals. There were many more one sided results (and many more goals than say Euro 2016.) The highlight was the final at the impressive Met Life Stadium in New Jersey that was full, 82,500 people. There are 28,000 car parks at Met Life and it is normal for supporters to have a BBQ in the carpark and drinks outside the ground beforehand. The final was won 4–2 by Chile over

INJURY PREVENTION, TREATMENT AND FIFA 11+ WORKSHOP Monday 18 July WSAFC Clubrooms and Turf Time: 7.45pm – 9.15pm We are pleased to announce that due to huge demand, we are running the Injury Prevention, Treatment and FIFA 11+ Workshop again this year on Monday 18 July 2016. This workshop is a complete warm-up programme to reduce injuries among male and female football players aged 14 years and older, however it can be used in younger players to help improve movement patterns which is likely to reduce injuries later in their playing careers. The programme was developed by an international group of experts, and its effectiveness has been proven in a scientific study. Teams that performed

the FIFA 11+ at least twice a week had 30-50% fewer injured players. LOOKING AFTER OUR FACILITIES AT SEDDON FIELDS

Phone Paul Thomas

Fuji Xerox delivers market-leading document services and print solutions.

www.fujixerox.co.nz

As we all know, Auckland Council and Western Springs AFC have invested heavily in the artificial turf we have at Seddon Fields.

Complimenting McDonald’s local sponsorship of clubs like Western Springs AFC, a new national sponsorship has been agreed with New Zealand Football.

As we get to use these facilities all year round, the club and its members have a responsibility to maintain the turf and therefore it is essential that the only footwear used on the field are: TURF BOOTS MOULDED STUDS We often get asked why this is so important and the reasons are: Flat soles and bare feet over time press the artificial grass down and this ruins the surface Screw-in studs rip the artificial turf, and if they fall out, they can get caught up in the maintenance vehicles and cause significant damage. Turf boots and moulded studs have only a small surface area which is in contact with the artificial turf, meaning the turf lasts longer.

FIELD DIVIDERS We have new Fuji Xerox ‘field dividers’ on the turf to stop balls interrupting games and practises (picture below). Please ensure that no-one; sits or stands on them, moves or unclips them.

We do have notices up all around the fencing, so please all remember our four simple turf rules: 1. Correct footwear only

FIELD STEWARD AT SEDDON FIELDS

2. Water only - no fizzy drinks, coffee or energy drinks

Although most club members follow the rules, we do have a small number who regularly ignore them. Therefore, there will be a ‘Field Steward’ present at our club at weekends to enforce them. Please make his job easy by ensuring you, and any others with you, follow the rules at all times.

4. Only players, coaches and managers may enter the turf, everyone else should enjoy watching from around the fence parameter or up on the balcony.

N I W S D L A R E EM L L I H T S E R R O AT F M I LF O R D On the 12th of June the 11th Grade Emeralds participated in the Forrest Hill Milford Girls Tournament.

6 July 2016 www.wsafc.org.nz

against another very good team. Both teams created chances but Anija Irvine finally broke the deadlock with a well taken goal. After a few nervous minutes the game was over and we were champions! Another awesome win for the Emeralds.

NZ Football is promoting the competition to its database of over 200,000 football players and supporters, we are pitching national and local media stories, it will be supported on social media channels, and we have some great video content of All Whites

and Football Ferns talking about their memories of their junior coaches. Cheers, Simon Kenny Head of Communications McDonald’s Restaurants (NZ) Ltd email: simon.kenny@nz.mcd.com mob: 027 482 7692 Twitter: @MaccasNZ

Football Positions: Anywhere am need and could do a job at the moment. But been regularly at center back and midfield in the last five seasons after playing most of my career as a foward.

Proudest Football Moment: Achieving and winning things as a player and a team will always be up there but my proudest moment to date is scoring my first international goal on debut v New Caledonia.

Football Hero: One word “Zizou”! Hands down the finest player I’ve ever seen in my lifetime of knowing the game.

Favourite Football Club to watch: I’ve started watching Liverpool since I was 9 and don’t think am stopping anytime soon.

Other interests: Football coaching/development. Enjoying working with our academy and the U17s at the moment. I’d like to try my hand in senior coaching one day and very fortunate to have this wonderful club helping me getting there. Any recreational and fun filled activities that gets me active, am up for. 8 July 2016 www.wsafc.org.nz

LI G E R O W I N S A L G U O D R E OM DIGG E T A L P E D A R G 9TH WSAFC Ligero played their first tournament of 2016 at Onehunga-Mangere on 12 June.

JEREMY SUTTON ADVENTURE TO THE COPA AMERICA!

10 July 2016 www.wsafc.org.nz

Argentina on penalties. The supporters were very vocal compared to other countries. This competition gets no coverage in the media apart from being on ESPN but is well worth going to and following. Looking forward to being back at Seddon Fields and watching my boy Noah play for the Toros in the 9th grade! Thanks for supporting the Facebook competition we have run! Jeremy Sutton Barrister

Justin Lopes, from Back To Your Feet Physiotherapy, will give some background to Injury Prevention, Treatment and FIFA 11+ and demonstrate how to integrate it into your weekly training programme. To register for this course, simply click on the button below. Please bring your turf boots as there will be a practical component (not compulsory!). Let’s get behind injury prevention! https://reg.sportingpulse.com/regoform.cgi?formID=60168

UPDATE ON AED’S In January of this year Geoff Brogan suffered a heart attack while playing Summer Footy. With the help of his team mates and the Club Defibrillator (AED) he survived and is actually now back coaching various teams and playing with his team on Saturdays. As a result of this event many members were moved to donate money to raise funds for another AED. There was enough money raised to purchase 3x extra AED’s on top of the one the club had already purchased.

Justin Lopes will be co-ordinating the bookings and making sure that two teams away to the same club don’t double up for example. Also there may be more bookings than we have units. It will be on a first in first served basis. All home games will be covered by the existing Club AED. A booking page will be added to the Club Website over the next couple of weeks.

It’s a fantastic outcome and we are very proud, not only of the actions of the people who leapt to Geoff’s aid on the day but also the level of support from all quarters to raise the money for this lifesaving equipment. We have now purchased the extra AED’s and they are available for use to all travelling teams. Obviously the need will be greater for the older teams (over 30’s, over 35’s and over 40’s) and there will be a booking system put in place. If you are travelling to a club to play where you know that there is not an AED present and you would like to take one of the club AED’s then simply put in a request with the date. www.wsafc.org.nz July 2016 11

LOOKING AFTER OUR FACILITIES AT SEDDON FIELDS As we all know, Auckland Council and Western Springs AFC have invested heavily in the artificial turf we have at Seddon Fields.

OUR 4 SIMPLE TURF RULES We do have notices up all around the fencing, so please all remember our four simple turf rules: 1.

3. No food of any kind - that includes oranges, lollies, biscuits, cakes and pies ... 4. Only players, coaches and managers may enter the turf, everyone else should enjoy watching from around the fence parameter or up on the balcony.

We thank you for helping to keep our great turf in the best condition possible. www.wsafc.org.nz July 2016 17
