PRINCE HARRY PLAYS FOR SPRINGS HRH Prince Harry helped mark the final countdown to the FIFA U-20 World Cup by taking part in a mini football game with boys from the WSAFC 16 Metro team at The Cloud in Auckland.

was a fantastic way to finish and a wonderful day that will be remembered by everyone involved, particularly the excited mums.

In front of over 400 invited guests and a large group of World media, Prince Harry captained the NZ team of Tom Russell, Sebby Stephan, Jake Johnson, Oli Cranshaw, Tuyi Byamana and Pheonix Silver against an All Stars team captained by U20 vice captain Adam Mitchell, and featuring Oli Pitts, Ronin Moosman, Sean Atherton, Brandon Day, Zach Blackburn and Oscar Browne. Coaches for the game were Grant Russell and James Debenham.

Following the match, the boys and girls were granted a private audience with the prince in the function area of The Cloud where they got to ask him questions about everything from football to the All Blacks to royal babies. After that, the Prince went outside for his royal walkabout and then the worlds news media lined up to interview the boys about the game. Nothing like being the lead item on both national news bulletins at 6pm and all over the Sunday papers as well as BBC and Sky UK!!

As the crowd warmed up, Ella, Nina, Tayla, Faye and Lily from the Black Swans met Harry and he joined them in a game of keepy-uppy much to the delight of the girls.

“We nicknamed him Scholesy after Paul Scholes because he’s ginger and he scores goals.” Tuyi Byamana – NZ Herald “He’s not bad for a Prince.” Sebby Stephan – 3 News “Its not every day you get to play with a Prince.” Tom Russell – One News “I nuttsed him and I’m really happy about that!” Oli Pitts – One News

Refereeing the boys’ game was former All White Ivan Vicelich and the coin toss was made by the Prime Minister John Key. There was plenty of action on the mini turf field and the boys did not hold back against Harry who showed some great touches though he did get nut-megged twice. After 15 minutes of terrific football the scores were tied 7-7 and with Ivan about to blow the final whistle Phoenix rolled the ball around a defender and flicked it up and over another to Prince Harry, who leapt high and smashed a fantastic volley past poor Brandon. It was an incredible goal and with the crowd screaming, all the boys in the NZ team rushed over to embrace their new Royal teammate. I’m not sure that this is normal royal protocol, however, it 6 June 2015 www.wsafc.org.nz

MCDONALD’S

SUPPORTING FOOTBALL FROM WESTERN SPRINGS TO THE FIFA WORLD CUP McDonald’s connection with football, both in New Zealand, and around the world is a strong one. The relationship with FIFA World Cup extends over 20 years, while McDonald’s has been a partner to junior football in New Zealand since the early 2000s. And around the country, McDonald’s franchisees and restaurants sponsor their local clubs. For many years McDonald’s main involvement with junior football in New Zealand was as one of the Small Whites partners. We know many current All Whites and Football Ferns once had their player of the day certificates displayed proudly on their bedroom walls, and of course coveted the McDonald’s cheeseburger voucher! In 2012 McDonald’s extended its investment in junior football, working with New Zealand Football to launch McDonald’s Skills Zone. As anyone who has coached a junior team in the last few years will know, Skills Zone provides a valuable resource for grassroots coaches, and a incentive and reward for kids to develop their skills and earn their bronze, silver and gold badges. In 2014 McDonald’s provided the chance for one lucky child to walk onto the pitch with the players at the FIFA World Cup Final in Brazil. Thousands of Kiwi kids attended the McDonald’s Skills Zone Days, held around the country. As part of Skills Zone there are also 10 great videos (filmed at Seddon Fields) on nzfootball. co.nz/juniors, with All Whites and Football Ferns showing players and coaches core skills and fancy tricks. 8 June 2015 www.wsafc.org.nz

McDonald’s further cemented its role with football in New Zealand in 2015 with the launch of McDonald’s Junior Football. Working with New Zealand Football’s ‘whole of football’ plan, McDonald’s Junior Football provides resources to regional football development officers around the country. This year the football development officers will visit clubs and work with over 20,000 kids and coaches. They will also be handing out 15,000 McDonald’s footballs as many children who attended the Western Springs AFC open day found out! As is the case with McDonald’s Pt Chevalier and Grey Lynn, local restaurants have direct relationships with football clubs around the country. They recognise the hard work of a largely volunteer network, and the challenges clubs face to provide the equipment and support required by teams. For more information on McDonald’s Junior Football, and coaching resources for McDonald’s Skills Zone, visit nzfootball.co.nz/juniors.

Everyone starts by kicking a ball. That’s why McDonald’s is proud to support kiwi kids on the field with our Skills Zone Program, a tool used for parents and coaches to encourage kids to better their game and help kiwi kids become future All Whites or Football Ferns.

MEN’S 1ST TEAM OVERVIEW ON THE FIRST HALF OF THE SEASON At the halfway way of the league we sit on 13 points. We have achieved nine of those points in the last three games and are in a good vein of form going into the 2nd half of the season. New signing Benoit Bruyat has been the most consistent player so for with a string of superb performances at the heart of the defence. Other notable performers have been young Myer Crane who has worked his way into the team through good Reserve Team performances and is now scoring regularly for the senior team. The team has been boosted by the additions of Sam Burfoot and Darren White from Auckland City in recent weeks and the squad is looking strong for the 2nd half of the season.

We are actively looking for a central defender to boost our defensive stocks and make the balance of our squad better added to this we will lose Benoit back to his native France mid June so another reason to be in the market. I think we must strive for a top six finish but as always staying in the Premier League is the top priority. We have five home games remaining and it would be great to see as many club members down at the club watching. Best wishes.

Coerver Coaching – 31 Year Anniversary 1984 – 2015 Since 1984, Alfred Galustian of Coerver Coaching has worked as a coach’s educator with many of the world’s top clubs and federations. These include 15 of the current 20 English Premier teams, several stints at Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, as well as working with the French, English, and Japanese Football Federations. Coerver Coaching has also championed the women’s game all over the world alongside Kristine Lilly, a former Coerver student and two-time World Cup and Olympic Gold Champion.

Coerver Coaching benefits Makes the game fun to practice through individual technical development and small group play. Breaking the misconception – Coerver is not only about tricks and moves. Develops first touch, control coordination and flexibility. Encourages a positive, attacking style and develops self-esteem and confidence. Improves reaction speed with and without the ball and encourages good sportsmanship and respect. www.wsafc.org.nz June 2015 13

THE BULLETS WERE FIRING ON ALL FRONTS IN HAMILTON It was still dark when we set off on our road trip to the Tron on Mother’s Day. The journey was the normal complaining, noisy, arguing trip that most families endure when their kids are squeezed into a confined space and not given any iproducts for an hour and a half. Eventually we arrived in Hamilton and met up with the team for what was our first tournament together as Bullets. Andy Vernon, our coach extraordinaire, took the boys aside and prepared them for battle.

We continued to dominate and next it was a Tadhg Collie pass to Matthew Cunnington who set Karl Place off on a run down the left flank to blast in goal number two. 2-0 Bullets.

First up, Bullets v Cambridge Tornadoes.

HT 1-0. It was a game of two halves as the Tornadoes came out pumping and eventually beat us 2-1.

Again we started brightly and it was Karl who set up Cooper Malofie-Law to drill home the first goal of the game. Next up a moment of pure coaching pleasure as Andy saw his boys complete a number of excellent passes for Miles to slot home the ball from a few years out; Matthew, Cam and Marco Irvan all involved in the link up play. 2-0 Bullets. With James making some remarkable saves in goal it took a Roy of the Rovers rocket shot from Rio Irvan to put the game out of their reach with a few minutes to spare. 3-0 Bullets.

Next up, Hukanui Rototuna FC Roma v Bullets

Semi Final, Three Kings United Sandwiches v Bullets

The second game saw us up against the home team and they were making the most of the home advantage on a long grass pitch with some swift moves. Before long our passing game became too much for them as Cam Southgate passed to Rio Irvan whose shot was saved, but the ball carried to Miles Ellis who scored a wonder strike from 20 yards out. 1-0 Bullets.

We know TKU well. There’s a lot of mutual respect between players and coaches alike. They are a quality team who play really good football in a good manner with a smile on their face. Last time we played them, their coach told us we’d “walloped ‘em” – could we do the same again?

We started brightly and within three minutes, Aidan Price took the ball down the left wing and fired home a shot so powerful, it almost broke the netting. Bullets 1-0 up. We were on good form and George at left back was winning both tackles and the hearts of the locals with his cute smile.

14 June 2015 www.wsafc.org.nz

The boys were starting to really enjoy the game now and that showed as we took the match totally out of their reach as Cam passed to Luca Aitken who pulled off a lovely turn to fire home our third. 3-0 Bullets FT. Bullets v St Mary’s Spartans

A bright start from TKU saw them capitalise on some tired legs

and they went 1-0 up. Bullets regrouped, dug deep and fought back with Marco slotting home an equaliser in the first half. The second half seemed to go really quickly with chances for both teams going begging. Within no time the referee was blowing his whistle for full time. Penalties... Maybe it’s the English in me, after being knocked out of so many competitions by penalties, that I loathe them. I won’t mention who scored and who missed, it doesn’t matter as each one of those boys stood up to take responsibility. Needless to say we lost on penalties 5-4. James White was outstanding in goal and almost kept us in it, but it wasn’t to be our day. We left with our heads held high, but our tails between our legs. Incidentally, Cambridge Tornadoes beat TKU in the final 3-1. Thanks to everyone who came and supported us, especially all the mums who could’ve been relaxing in Chuan Spa instead. . . . not that we would’ve swapped places for a moment.

ONEHUNGA/MANGERE ‘DIGGER DOUGLAS’

9 TH GRADE TOURNAMENT

WSAFC FORZA 17 MAY 2015 What started off as a nice sunny day was a great intro for team Forza’s first 9th Grade competition, and what a day it turned out to be. Proudly representing WSAFC alongside Vitesse on the Mangere mountain, the newly formed team were full of energy and excitement which showed in their first game against Birkenhead United Black.

from both teams. Unfortunately for Ellerslie however was that we had Ryan Ellis and Josh Allington in defence who were fantastic. Well timed tackles, strength on the ball and some very clever thinking kept the ball away from our goal a lot of the game, however a long ball over the top to their striker and a fine finish resulted in 1-1 at the final whistle.

Straight from the kick-off Birkenhead were under pressure and given no time on the ball, possession quickly shifted to Forza who played some fine passing football and used the wide pitches to attack from either side. Toby Shanahan was playing up front in his new favoured position and was giving their defence all sorts of problems, but it was Oliver Long who broke the deadlock with a fine goal to put us 1-0 up. 1-0 quickly became 2-0 when Toby fired in a well struck goal and Forza were well in control of the game by now. With Oscar Duffy controlling the midfield as he does so well, another chance was quickly created and Blaise O’Reilly finished excellently to make it a 3-0 final score. Credit also to Oscar Larsen who was fantastic in goal and has such dogged determination to keep the ball out, enabled us to keep a clean sheet on a couple of occasions. A great win and the best I have seen the boys play so far this season.

Last game of the pools was Onehunga/Mangere Ninjas. Having lost both of their previous games we envisaged a win but I wanted the boys to keep the pressure on and they did. Within 15 seconds it was 1-0 after a fine run and shot by Joel down the right. With goals soon after from Oscar Larsen, Toby, Oscar Duffy and another by Joel it was 5-0 at half time. Boys brimming with confidence and parents (and coach) thoroughly enjoying watching ‘The Forza Show’. The 2nd half saw another fine goal from in-form Joel, and the 6-0 final score ensured Forza finished top of their group above Ellerslie.

Next up - Ellerslie Red. The Forza boys took no time in picking up where they left off, tackling hard, chasing everything and creating another good attack resulting in Toby scoring a fine goal taking us to 1-0. Joel who was excellent all day was in goal and made a string of saves to keep us 1-0 at half time. 2nd half was very even, some well organised attacks

16 June 2015 www.wsafc.org.nz

Quarter Finals of the Championship against East Coast Bays was always going to be tough but the boys were up for it. The game started very evenly but sadly two quick-fire goals had us 2-0 down at half time. 2nd half saw one more goal to ECB so a 3-0 loss was the final score. Particular mention again to both Ryan and Josh in defence who both played fantastically all day, 3-0 could easily have been more if it wasn’t for those two. The most rewarding part of a 3-0 loss was the 110% effort they boys gave right up till the final whistle. It was a really enjoyable day and the boys did both themselves and WSAFC proud.

Back (left to right): Josh Allington, Oscar Larsen, Blaise O’Reilly, Toby Shanahan, Ryan Ellis Front: Joel Robinson-Gomas, Oscar Duffy, Oliver Long Owen Ellis – Team Coach

The Forza boys took no time in picking up where they left off, tackling hard, chasing everything and creating another good attack.
