WHO WE ARE
M I M A inherited the practice from its precedent MimA NY Studio in New York Yo City, founded by Minh Tran n and associates a in 2004. M I M A is a human infrastructure of skille skilled craftsmen and architects chitects who design and build the work directly. Gathered through time, this group shares hares an environment created from an iterative process, where ideas are explored through throug the production of large-scale mock-ups, models, material studies, sketches and drawings. Here ere projects cts are developed through careful consideration of place and a practice that draws draw from om traditional tional skills, local building techniques, materials, and an ingenuity arising from limitlimi ed d resources. ces. The essence of our work lies in the relationship between land and ar architecture, architectur it requires coming to terms with the presence of the environment through the succession suc of o se easons. Inspired spired by y real life conditions, we observe the complexity of relationships within each projpro ect ct without ut any assumption or prejudice. Our attempt is to remain intuitive, and look for a space pace to initiate nitiate a dialogue. It is through this practice that the matter being observed obse natunat rally lly reveals ls itself. The endeavor is to show the genuine possibility in creating buildings bui that th emerge merge through rough a process of collective dialog, a face-to-face sharing of knowledge knowledg throug through im magination, n, intim intimacy, and modesty. “Our Our immediate ediate environment is a space that we subconsciously create and inhabit. inhab We can ca make ake this space very familiar, or we can expose ourselves to unfamiliar elements that propro voke oke our response and re-evaluation. There are many sources of inspiration: one only has tto observe closely. It is possible to have set ideas of what architecture should be, but first we need eed to u understand why things are a certain way.” We always ways pursue and bring to our customers the value of sustainable architecture perspecpe tive, and meaning eaning that the most valuable architecture gives life as follows: Ennirontment - Economic - Emotion - Education E on

OUR STRATEGY
THE SIMPLICITY OF PE PERFECTION As the 21st 21s century takes form, it is clear that there is no sense of direction or any pre prevalent style yle in architecture. Where uncertainly reigns, the desire for clear answers is all more pres pressing. How can architecture respond to the need to fine a spirit of the time ? The of building that neither denies the past nor glorifies it beyond reason? W When urban an population rise dramatically, and the quality of the life declines, the t role o of certain ertain creative eative architects becomes central in defining the future of the built environment. envir MIMA one of those creators an architect who has sought and found the keys to adaptin ng modern odern architecture chitecture to the need of this time. Although he makes abstract referen reference to Jap Japanese nese tradition, ition, he is just as much influenced by the powerful simplicity of the best be of Mod Moderrnism. The he qualities ies have made him international famous, one of the understand the depth d and an im mportance e of MIIMA’s contribution, it is essential to actually see his buildings, ings, in particular those builtt in Viet VietNam. A Goal of MIMA M work is bring together these apparently divergent ideas of space in a “un nifie ed transcendent endent architecture “ Such thing as Light and Wind only have meaning when they are introduce inside a house se in a form cu cut off from outside world. The isolated fragments of light and air suggest the enti entire nature world. The forms I have created have altered and acquired meaning through elemene tary nature light ight and air that give indications of the passage of time and the changing chan of the seasons….

HAPPY AND FREEDOM DOM
WHAT DO MIMA MOST VALUE IN YOUR WORKS ? Among g the things one tries to do in architecture, and before I ‘d discovered many of my intentions, entions, I would say the ability to withstand time. That may sound extreme, but I think, If th the works are truly worthwhile, they withstands time. wor Th he ability to be recognizable architecture and that can remain in one’s mem memory. To o speak of time, of the ability to withstand time and to remain in people’s mem memory, would wou require a much longer discourse. I like it thatt people can remember remembe …Modern rn Tube House H 2011 or Vietnamworks 20 2006. It rea ally excites me when people still say when they see me “That’s the architect who made mad Modern Mode Tube ube House”. se”. Modern Tube House was built 2011 some years ago and it is very small, sm but it’s it radical, clear, ear, and seminal. Or the Vietnamwork o or 81 Villa. They hey are works that withstand time and remain in people’s memory, and that is important. im I’ve ve spoken n all to all students and clients before about making people happy. I th think peop people live ve happily y in my buildings, both in the houses, office, hotels, apartment, and sch school and in the others. I’ve told the story thousands of times about the first day the employees walked into Vietnamworks orks to work, and how one of the people going there to work was moved as he entered the t large space. pace. Because obviously that space, which you call holy, is very powerful. Every Eve time I go back to the Vietnamworks or to the Modern Tube House,,,, I always proude prouded about this area. I think the works’ ability to serve in this respect and to make the people there comfortable and happy is a good objective. In the end, that’s my intention: to build ideas deas capable cap of being materialized so that people live happily in them. Freedom is at the center of my life. In Architecture and in Teaching, and in my personal life I’ve hardly done anything for this to happen; that is, I haven’t done anything strange or any thing that wouldn’t encourage them and give them freedom. It’s the same with one’s children, you can give them all the maternal protection you want, but it’s counter productive: you have to give them freedom.

LIGHT AND SILENCE E
Silence to light Light to Silence ence The threshold reshold of their crossing is the Sin Singularity is inspiration in (w where the desire to express meets the possible) is the sanctuary ctuary of A Art is the Treasury sury of the Sha Shadows (M Material cast shadows shado shadows belong to light)
A great American merican poet once asked the architect, ‘What slice of the sun does you your building buildin ha ave?’ What at light enters your room? ‘As if to say the sun n never knew how great iit is until it struck the side o of a building. This his building ng feels-and it’s a good feeling-that I had nothing to do with it, that some s other oth ha ands did it. A module is not the repetition of a motif but the expression of an architectural pr principle. I don’t believe ieve in need as a force at all. Need is a current, everyday affair. But desire-that de is something omething else again. Desire is the forerunner of a new need. It is the yet not started, the y yet not ot made which motivates. The world orld cannot be expected to come from the exercise of present technology alone to find the realms of new expression. e I believe that technogy Should be inspired. ed. A go good plan demands it. It is much better not to cover er anything up but to show the full nature natu and relationship of part, including the present condition of each which is a record of how it got that way. Listen to the man who works with his hands. nds. He m may be able to show you a better way to do it. When you have all the answers about a building before you start building it, your answers are not true. The building gives you answers as it grows and becomes itself.

Villa 81 | Thao Dien, District 2, HCMC (Vietnam) | 2014 Area: 450 m2 (Completed) In Partnership with REAL Conceptually, the design shifts 2 masses to create the best nature light running to each room. All rooms from west side are set back for corridor to reduce direct sunlight noise from the surrounding. With the strong geometry and simple line, natural stone was considered as a material to be contrasted with soft marble and wood oor that gives the users a high quality of living.
12
13
Modern Tube House | Thao Dien, District 2, HCMC (Vietnam) | 2013 Area: 250m2 (Completed) In Partnership with REAL Concept follows the conventional layout of town house in Hanoi, narrow, elongated space with little to nature light and wind. We bring nature light to each space, while try to maximize open area using exible curtain wall as sliding door. At all time, the users can enjoy good ventilation and natural illumination.
14
15
Minimalist House | Phu My Hung, District 7, HCMC (Vietnam) | 2006 Area: 350m2 (Completed) In Partnership with REAL My client who used to living in New York asked us to design a house with New York minimalism. The residence is located in Thai Hung, where the development had already planned for a more Oriental style. After conducting studies, we decided to take down the old structure for a new concept with stronger geometry and more clariďŹ ed space. The house is designed with simple materials: brick, wood, stainless steal and marble to achieve the best of natural light and ventilation.
16
17
Low Cost Lighting House | (Vietnam) | 2014 Area: 200m2 (Completed) The concept is designed for a house with low investment around 25k, but still has superior quality of living. I divided the house into 3 portions based on a 4.5m grid to limit the appearance of collumns. The natural light can be brought into the house through courtyards in middle and back of the house, where gardens are planned, color of life on the white canvas. Hallways are designed as bridges to connect inner masses in the light-ďŹ lled space.
18
19
Karavansara Apartment | (Cambodia) | 2011 Area: 2000m2 for 16 Unit. (Completed) In Partnership with REAL Concept uses local materials with special contructing technique for apartment. Thick local brick building skin serves as a layer protection from heat and harsh solar exposure for the balcony and each of the room inside. Double layered wall with bat insulation in between blocks out the heat, thus keeps temperature in living areas relatively cool. Roof top swimming pool also serves as a solar reector to prevent heat penetrating the building from above.
20
21
Karavansara Hotel | (Cambodia) | 2013 Area: 1000m2 | 12 Rooms | Restaurant and Swimming Spa on the roof (Completed) In Partnership with REAL Concept brings 3 languages of architecture into the Hotel. On the existing site, we have a Colonial French house that had been modiďŹ ed into 8 Luxury Rooms. Inside the new building, wooden Khmer architecture from the province is recreated. Combined with the two, 4 other rooms and the swimming pool are designed in a contemporary approach. For all buildings to speak with one another, we used CMU to build the skin, than painted white to neutralize the whole compound architecturally, and absorb strong shadow line. We won the best Boutique Hotel Award in ASIA 2014

23
Parkland Green Building | District 2, HCMC (Vietnam) | 2013 Area: 2ha | 4 Block Building | 48 Floors (Construction Phase) In Partnership with REAL In Vietnam, beside carrying out architecture with the best efficiency, we always have to consider climate, light, and ventilation. This is how we save energy for the building. The concept utilize deeper balcony to gain more green space, while protect the unit below from direct sunlight. This architectural approach create a facade that speaks for the functionality of the building.
