GOV NOTE TRUSTEE NOTE Hey MinnDak,
Greetings MinnDak!
I hope you are all having a great school year. All of you have made my term amazing so far, thank you.
My name is Hannah Nivar and it is a complete honor to be serving as your International Trustee for the remainder of the 2017-2018 service year. I am a current junior at the Marine Academy of Technology and Environmental Science located in a small town in South Jersey. Outside of Key Club, I serve as Student Government Secretary, meaning I find ways to get my school involved with Key Club's Service Projects as often as possible! In addition to a few other activities (Relay for Life, Spanish Club, Yearbook Committee, Literary Magazine, School Store and Dance Team), my favorite would have to be Project Terrapin. Please remember that I am here to serve as a resource to you and will always be more than willing to answer any questions or concerns you may have or even just get to know you! One of my favorite things about Key Club are the opportunities to meet people and make new friends. Feel free to contact me at hnivar.kci@gmail.com!
The committee application is closed and we have a few new members. You can check these individuals out on the MinnDak website. Thanks to all who applied. DCON is right around the corner. Please join us in Wilmar in April. If you have any questions reach out to your Lieutenant Governor. I can't wait to see what 2018 holds for us. Keep up the great service. See you in April!
Yours in Friendship and Service, Kacie Iverson minndakgoc@gmail.com

2017 In October the MinnDak District Board hosted the 2017 Fall Rally in Loretto, MN. This event is an annual district event where all Key Club in the MinnDak District are invited to get training, meet each other and do service projects too! The first night of arrival there’s an opening session where there’s an introduction, dinner and officer training. The next day is an active day. Everyone is split into groups and work together as a team to accomplish difficult team building tasks. Then moving on to high ropes course where groups went ziplining, hiking, and climbing up poles. All activities were safe and everyone were supported by their group members! Everyday Key Clubbers shared meals together and got to know each other better; they even met the whole district board! There was even caucusing to learn procedures that will be done at DCON. The whole Fall Rally weekend was filled with teamwork, service and learning! Check out our Fall Rally video on our YouTube channel! Join us next year our 2018 Fall Rally!

QUACK NEWS! BACK TO SCHOOL SERVICE PROJECTS
9
School has begun and that means Key Club is in session! It can be hard to get a club started again in school when coming back from the summer. It’s a great time to try new service projects and set some goals! An idea for a service project could be making “welcome back to school” cards for teachers. Teachers work hard for us so it’s nice to give something back to them. Another service project is to hold a clothing drive. Fall is
coming and it’ll be cold. Collect warm sweaters and pants. People always need hats, scarves and socks to wear! Even clean up the school yard. Football games can get messy so it’s a perfect time to clean up bleachers and recycle appropriate items. It’s even better to set goals as a club to reach. Choose how many times your club cleans up after football games or how much clothing you donate to a shelter. Work together to achieve your goals!
K- FAMILY The K- Family there are six different branches. There’s Key Club, Kiwanis, Circle K, Aktion Club, Builders Club and K-Kids. Each branch is focused on a different group of people. Key Club is for teenagersin high school. Kiwanis is for older adults that help fund service projects and is also a very committed organization. Circle K is for college students and is constantly growing every year. Aktion Club is a service club for adults with disabilities. Builders Club is an organization for young kids in middle school. K-kids is for elementary schools students to begin their development on service and leadership.
MONTHLY REPORT FORMS A duty of a secretary is to fill out a monthly report form. It’s important to fill one out every month because it helps the district keep track of what your club is doing and keep us up to date! It also informs us that your club is active every month! It’s a form of questions you answer. It consist of questions about club meetings, attendance and service projects. If you have any questions always feel free to ask for help from members, advisors, LTG or district secretary. Even check out video on how to fill one out that was filmed by our secretary, Lily!
TRICK-OR-TRE ATING FOR UNICEF Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF is something Key Clubbers do every year. Clubs purchase UNICEF boxes and can collect money. Students can trick-or-treat at school or on Halloween night to collect money. Make it even more fun by dressing up in costumes and really get into the spirit. Besides going around and collecting money, you can leave it at hospitals or somewhere for people to put in their change they don’t want. It’s an easy way to help an organization! Join in on the fun next year!

Fridley High School Throughout the whole month of October, Key Clubbers collected socks to donate to a local homeless shelter called Sharing & Caring Hands. This event was based off a past event called the Homeless Sleep Out, where they sleep on the football field to spread awareness for homelessness. This year they’ve decided to change it slightly, to be called Socktober. In the past the event costed $12 to participate but this year it exchanged for the same amount of money in socks! The
Socktober movement because homeless shelters in need of socks, but it is the least donated item. Kid President creator, Brad Montague, was the one behind this movement and inspired the Fridley Key Club. Overall we collected over 800 pairs of socks altogether. Thank you to everyone who participated!
Henry Sibley High School Our first meeting in October was a service meeting with many different activities. One was going around the school cleaning teacher’s whiteboards as a teacher appreciation project. The club also made bookmarks for the library and decorated them in bright colors. Our second service meeting we made pancakes bright and early for the teachers and faculty. With a huge bag of pancakes and two griddles, pancakes were produced in matter of. seconds.
During this, members also made flyers for the Trick-or-Treat for canned goods event. It was a successful month for member participation in our meeting and community service.
Columbia Heights High School The Plate to Garden program was created by the MN Composting Council to complete the loop of growing food, eating food, and turning food scraps back into a natural fertilizer to grow food again. Anoka County residents are able to drop off their organic waste at the Columbia Heights Recycling Center free of cost. The drive to compost has spread throughout the city with over 290 households registered and more signing up each month. Columbia Heights is an organized refuse city and pays for trash by the ton. By recycling organics, the city is reducing trash tonnage. Last year over 20 tons of organics were delivered to the recycling center. This saved the refuse fun over $1,500 in tipping fees. “ The City pays for trash disposal by the ton so one of our main goals is to control cost by recycling organics instead of throwing it with the trash,” Jesse Davies from the Public Work Department said. When the organics are dropped off at the Recycling Center they are then brought to the SMSC (Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community) Organics Recycling Facility. Members of the Columbia Heights Key Club as well as “organic recycling” residents took a tour of the
facility to see firsthand how organic materials are converted into a soil like material. In conjunction with the Columbia Heights organics program, the Columbia Heights Key Club conducts a “Plate to Garden Compost” fundraiser April through June. Over 40 additional households signed up of the City’s organics drop-off program during the event this year. The SMSC donated compost and the city hauled it to the recycling center for Key Club. This year, the Key Club distributed almost 350 bags of compost raised over $900. The event officially ended on June 10, but there are still leftover bags of compost that the Kiwanis Club will sell on behalf of the Key Club. These funds will be used for services projects and sponsoring students attending leadership conferences at the State and National levels. The finished compost is used as an alternative to chemical fertilizers on lawns, gardens and potted plants which benefits lakes and rivers by reducing phosphorus runoff. By recycling organics with the city, trash tonnage is reduced. Residents can protect the environment and support Key Club by purchasing the finished compost.
