CLEANSING AND NOURISHING YOUR HAIR IN PREPARATION FOR WINTER BY DEBORAH NICOLETTI OF ORAH SALON HAIR BY DANI MACKRISS

STEP 1

STEP 2

STEP 3

STEP 4

STEP 1 Start by giving your hair and scalp a brush with a natural bristle paddle brush to allow your natural oils to travel down the hair shaft. This is also extremely healthy for your scalp to slough off dry or dead skin cells.

STEP 2 It is important to detoxify your hair periodically not only to rid it of outside elements but to prepare it for nutrients needed from a deep conditioning treatment. Start with a good quality clarifying shampoo (Solu by Davines)

STEP 3 Before rinsing wrap your hair with a hot towel and let it sit for 2 or 3 minutes to ensure that you get a full detox. Rinse with warm water.

STEP 1

STEP 4 Now it’s time for your luxury shampoo or a shampoo which is specific for your hair type. We are using (Minu by Davines) for ultimate shine. Rinse with warm water.

STEP 5 Now your hair is ready for a deep conditioning or restorative conditioner. Towel dry your hair slightly to allow for the product to penetrate fully. We are using (Nounou by Davines) for it’s nourishing factors. Let your conditioner sit for a least 5 minutes. Don’t forget to give your scalp a nice massage!

STEP 5

STEP 6

STEP 7

STEP 8

STEP 6 Adding a glossing treatment will coat your hair with ultimate shine and keep it protected from the elements. Glossing treatments generally last for 6 to 8 weeks, perfect for between cuts. Color hues can also be added to glossing to keep things looking fresh. This is an in salon treatment but highly recommended to protect your hair from the winter ahead.

STEP 7 Use your favorite leave in treatment to protect it from heat and styling and style as desired! (Melu Hair Sheild by Davines)

STEP 8 Style as desired !

L’Incroyable Blowdry 1 cut 3 ways BY COLIN D FORD OF LOYAL HAIR THERAPY PHOTOS COURTESY KERASTASE MODEL ANJA RUBIK

One of the strongest hair trends maintaining momentum is the Lob, a long bob in fact. The misconception is that you cannot style as easily as long hair. Anything that you can do with long hair you can do with a Lob. The secret is to know what tools and which products to use to achieve the look you desire.

T

he Lob is cut to the shoulder or just past the shoulder with no harsh lines, a soft perimeter & no definite layers.

3.

2.

Always apply heat protecting styling lotion (L’Incroyable Blowdry lotion) to mid-lengths and ends.

1.

La Romantique - a fresh & feminine updo -

La Sensuelle - brushed out sculptured curls -

La Rebelle - a modern version of beachy waves -

Use hands & smooth top of the hair. Tousle dry mid-lengths & ends. Use a flat iron, create bends in the hair. Finish, use salt spray (Spray à Porter) on the mid-lengths & ends.

Power dry hair 90% dry and use a large round brush to create volume on top of head.

Use a large round brush, smooth the hair.

Divide hair from top to back. Secure top section.

Create side parting.

Lightly backcomb back section. Apply a small amount of moulding paste (Baume double Jeu) in hands & twist hair into a knot at the nape. Secure.

Take horizontal sections, mist with a hairspray (Laque Couture) & curl hair using a medium sized curling iron. Alternate the direction of the curl. Add a small amount of a serum in your hands, rake through the curls to create separation. Use your fingers to expand the shape and finish with Laque Couture.

Repeat same action for the top, twisting the hair & secure on top of the back section. Finish, rake your fingers lightly through the top to create soft texture & finish with Laque Couture.

THE PERFECT BROWS Micro-pigmentation vs Microblading Which method is right for you? Micro-Pigmentation embeds pigment into the midlayer of the dermis and can last longer than microblading. It can heal in with a natural, powdered-in finish. Microblading embeds pigment into the uppermost layer of the dermis and can heal in with an ultra-realistic looking hairstroke. It will require more frequent visits as it tends to heal out more quickly.

BEFORE

Both are timesaving and make for beautiful brows. Some deciding factors can include client lifestyle, skin type, age, product usage, SPF usage, client aftercare and pigment choice. Whether it’s micro-pigmentation, microblading, or even a combination of the two, the best way to determine which method will be right for you is to have an honest conversation with a reputable technician well-trained in both techniques.

FROM DAY TO NIGHT with Simple Sophistication

WITH MAKEUP ARTIST MISSY MACKINTOSH

PHOTOS BY SHARLA PIKE

Add these 4 simple steps to our Easy Bronze Smoky with Glowing Skin tutorial from the last issue, to take your look from day to night. STEP 1 Add black liquid liner to your upper lash line using your existing black shadow as a guide. (Recommend Glo Minerals Liquid Ink). HOW TO - Hold the applicator parallel to your lid. Start in the centre of your lash line with a small line; slowly continue in small segments towards the outer corner. Connecting each line as you go. Once at the end of your lash line, slightly wing the end upward with a light feathery touch. Finish the line from the center of lid to your inner corner, slowly tapering it off as you go.

STEP 3 Once lash glue is dry, line the base of the lashed lid with liquid liner.

STEP 4 Apply a bold lip colour to lips. (Used here - Glo Minerals Matte Sued Crayon in Bombshell)

STEP 2 - Fake Lashes

(Used here - Kiss Lashes #11) HOW TO With your thumb roll the lashes off their base. Hold the centre tips of the lash with tweezers. Measure lash up with your natural lash (before glue). If outer corner extends past your natural lash line, cut the outer corner with scissors. Apply a thin line of lash glue to the base of the lash. Let dry for 30 seconds. Keeping your eyes on the mirror, tilt your chin up. Hold the tips of the lash with tweezers; line up the lash above your natural lash line. Gently press the centre base onto the centre of your lash line. Let go with tweezers; grab your outer corner and press into lash line. Repeat on inner corner. Push the tips the lashes into your lash line with fingertips to reinforce. Repeat on other eye. Missy MacKintosh is a Professional Make Up Artist serving Shuswap, Okanagan, and surrounding area. MORE than just Hair BY BRANDI PARNELL

PHOTOS SHARLA PIKE

On the outskirts of Kelowna, tucked close to Knox Mountain Park, sits the community of Glenmore Valley, a beautiful, tranquil neighbourhood. A safe sanction from life in the city, Glenmore is a closely-knit network of individual families, as well as businesses.

G

lenmore Hair Studio and Esthetics is a destination where you can leave everything at the door and sink into a fresh new look, some necessary TLC or a complete makeover. Iris Apfel said, “If your hair is done properly and you have good shoes, you can get away with anything.”

Glenmore Hair has recently changed ownership, although the same wholesome approach to their clientele remains. Newlywed and new owner, Nicole, had been working at Glenmore for approximately two years, when the chance to purchase the salon came to be. “I saw it as an incredible opportunity. I was ready to grow and learn all I could about the business aspect of hair. This was a venture I couldn’t pass up.” And with the previous owner staying on board as a stylist, it truly was a win-win for everyone,” she says. “Glenmore is a nice little community just on the edge of Kelowna with all of the amenities and a small town feel.” One of their strengths at the salon is the relationships they build with their clients, who are more like friends. In operation since 1991, Glenmore Hair is one of the original tenants of the Glenvalley Plaza, having grown with in tandem with the community. “We choose staff who work as a team. We are like a family here, we help one another out and truly care about our clients and community.” “We have clients who are between one and 100,” says Nicole. Committed to ongoing education and always keeping up to date with the latest styles, she says, “we take as many education classes as we can to stay fresh and inspired. In fact, we are taking a colour class coming up. We love attending hair shows and staying on top of coming trends.” 20

Nicole and her team are known for their custom colours, which they create using their colour line by Iso. “Fashion colours, such as pastels, are still hot, but as the temperature gets colder, people start to think about warmer colours. We absolutely love finding unique and beautiful shades created specifically for our clients. Iso Colour is more than readymade mixes; the talented team at Glenmore can create any shade imaginable, including ombres. To find your perfect look or to maintain one that you love, call Nicole and her stylists at Glenmore Hair Studio. ANTI-AGING IN YOUR

30’s, 40’s, & 50’s PART TWO

22

BY DR. CHELSEA GRONICK, ND

40’s

In our 20’s, hormones and metabolism are at their peak. Often we feel our most fit, slim and energized selves. As such, we don’t need to spend time thinking about our bodies’ capacity to run efficiently. However, as we enter our 30’s, everything changes.

If you’ve managed to keep things afloat through your 30’s, you’ll be eager to enter your fabulous 40’s. Yet, this is often when I hear patients don’t feel right in their bodies, although they’re not sure why.

Our 30’s can be one of the busiest times in our lives, whether we’re consumed with a growing family or building a career. And because we look and more importantly feel as though we’re still 20, we continue to make 20-year old choices in regards to our health and lifestyle.

Perhaps you’re starting to feel (and look) older than you really are, which may be the result of several common health shifts that have occurred; including a slower metabolism, loss of muscle, belly fat accumulation, low libido, mood swings, increased feelings of stress and poor sleep.

MINT Kelowna

As estrogen and progesterone wax and wane, the adrenal glands have to pick up the slack. If estrogen and progesterone levels are already slightly weak (thank you 30’s), this stage can be enough to push them over the edge, resulting is blood sugar issues, poor insulin sensitivity as well as carb intolerance, and belly fat. Men should be aware of their declining testosterone and rising estrogen levels and become diligent about minimizing testosterone robbers such as beer, excess alcohol, too much sugar and starch, and stress.

Here are 4 ways you can make your 40’s fabulous again: 1. JUMP START YOUR METABOLISM. Training with weights for 30 minutes, three to five times per week in a high intensity interval style is one of the best ways to rev your metabolism, build lean muscle mass and burn fat.

2. TIME YOUR CARBS. Cortisol, our main stress handling and fat storing hormone, should be highest in the morning and lowest in the evening. Timing your carb intake to be low at breakfast and higher at dinner is one way to minimize the fat storing potential of carbs.

3. AVOID MIXING HIGH SUGAR/STARCH FOODS WITH HIGH FAT FOODS. The combination of starches and sugars combined with fats is a recipe for weight gain, specifically around the stomach area. Examples of this are doughnuts, French fries, pizza and burgers, cheesecake, as well as wine and cheese, which are all sugar and fat combination foods. It’s best to keep starches/sugars and fats separate, so if you are having a higher carb/sugar meal, keep the fats low, and vice versa. For women, this is when peri-menopause sets in, with years of fluctuating hormones and unexpected physical, emotional, and mental changes. Women notice more central abdominal weight gain, largely due to the decrease in sensitivity to insulin as estrogen levels drop off. Ovulation becomes intermittent, leading to lower progesterone levels, creating estrogen dominance with irregular and heavier periods. This excess estrogen inhibits thyroid hormone production, often causing low thyroid issues and a slowed metabolism.

4. CONSIDER IMPLEMENTING A SECRET WEIGHT LOSS WEAPON. HcG is a hormone that can be used strategically with a low calorie diet for short periods of time to help liberate fat stores from stubborn areas or areas resistant to typical dietary and weight loss efforts. It helps to overcome food cravings and addiction, and resets hormones and metabolism. With this secret weapon, it’s not uncommon to lose 10 – 40 lbs. over three to six weeks. HcG should always been done using the prescription injectable form under a doctors supervision. Dr. Chelsea Gronick is a naturopathic doctor with a medical practice in downtown Kelowna. MINT Kelowna

Have you ever marveled how celebrities and beautiful people in your life, radiate that healthy and confident smile? You’re thinking of them now… Taylor Swift…Luke Bryan. Did you chalk it up to good genes, good luck and youth? Simply Amazing Smiles in Kelowna is about to pull back the curtain on how to achieve that next level confidence and create a life-changing smile.

L

ocated at Suite 100,1475 Ellis Street is the unique and client centered approach to general and aesthetic dentistry. Expertly led by Dr. Trevor Morhaliek, who brings nearly 18 years of professional service and care to his practice. With support and assistance from his team, Dr. Morhaliek treats clients to a level of dental care unmatched in Kelowna. “Restorative aesthetic dentistry has long been the fusion of art and science. It combines the latest in technology with best practice methods to create amazing smiles. We live in a time where beautiful, proportionate, straight, white teeth are an option for people in just a couple of visits. We’re doing it differently. And we’re doing it better than ever before.” A graduate and past instructor of the Frontier Institute for Advanced Post Graduate Dental Education, Dr. Morhaliek has both studied and taught smile design. “Keeping abreast of new techniques and materials, learning along-side other leaders in dental artistry is exciting. It keeps Simply Amazing Smiles ahead of the curve and lets us help more patients. It makes for personalized smiles tailored specifically to the patient’s wishes.” A Simply Amazing Smile begins simply with an amazing conversation and a plan. They call it a

blue print for success. And it is the road map to the smile you long for. The smile you seek to greet the world with and share your new message through. Client consults take place in-house, in a calm and relaxed environment. Using high tech digital imaging, Dr. Morhaliek works with each client to create a smile they can be proud to share with the world. SO HOW DO THEY DO IT? The megawatt smiles we see and envy are the result of dental techniques and materials called veneers and porcelain restorations. Veneers are commonly chosen for their beauty and strength. Patients prefer them to the old school crowns because of their comfort, ease of care and they don’t have any of the dark edges at the gumline. Dr. Morhaliek prefers them because they are the least invasive of all aesthetic porcelain restorations, preserving the maximum amount of healthy tooth structure for a comfortable feel and the most natural appearance. Each new smile is consists of any number of custom-designed veneers, working together for perfect fit, form and function. A single veneer can be created and applied in as little as one appointment by Dr. Morhaliek. An entire smile may take as few as three appointments. “Every smile, every face is unique. So every smile we create is very special. Veneers are an excellent aesthetic choice for people who are simply unhappy with the size, shape or color of their teeth. They are also ideal for clients whose teeth show signs of ageing and excessive wear or damage.” Like so many clients at Simply Amazing Smiles, Vanessa Johnson, with the encouragement of her parents, took the 28

step to pursue her dream of a beautiful smile. “Before I met Dr. Morhaliek and his team, I had no hope for my teeth. I felt self- conscious and had very low self-esteem. My smile was non-existent. On the few occasions when I would smile, I would make sure none of my teeth showed. I was embarrassed. Being a social person and working with the public it was impossible to be myself throughout the day. I felt I couldn’t interact with people like I wanted to or be the outgoing person I knew I was on the inside.”

“Changing my smile, changed my life.” I never felt more cared for, than in Dr. Morhaliek’s dental chair. And I never thought I would say that in my life! I grew up fearful of the dentist, having seen movies that joke about the suffering that can go on there. The team at Simply Amazing Smiles genuinely care about each client they serve. They go out of their way to make sure that clients have everything they need to feel comfortable to begin their transformation.” Private treatment suites, steaming aromatherapy towels and complimentary massages are all part of the experience at Simply Amazing Smiles. One client at a time, one exceptional smile at a time. Aesthetic Dentistry – Upgrading Your Smile with Porcelain Veneers Recent surveys confirm what many of us naturally know… A great looking smile is an important physical and social asset. In fact, the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry conducted a survey revealing that the appearance of a smile can influence career success, personal relationships and self-image. Some dentists are skilled in offering “smile makeovers” for patients seeking a bright and healthy looking smile. Porcelain restorations such as veneers, are often utilized to accomplish this look. The results are incredibly beautiful and are often life-changing transformations. Having helped hundreds of patients achieve their personal dream smile, I’d like to address a few of the most common questions asked by patients interested in transforming their smiles… HOW LONG DO VENEERS LAST?

HOW DO I KNOW WHAT MY NEW SMILE WILL LOOK LIKE?

While there is no “expiry” for porcelain restorations, we typically see them lasting fifteen to twenty years, and often much longer than that. Many variables contribute to the longevity of any dental work, so be sure to visit your dentist on a regular basis to ensure your new smile keeps looking its best and lasts as long as possible. A great hygiene regimen of daily brushing and flossing, a healthy diet and a healthy lifestyle is the surest way for any great smile to last a lifetime.

Every smile is unique because every face and every patient is different. Seek dentists who have extensive additional hands-on training in dental aesthetics and have a lot of experience creating new smiles with porcelain restorations. Modern techniques and technology can show you how your new smile will look before you even begin! Plus, you can literally ‘test-drive’ your new smile, in real time, so you’re absolutely confident in how it will look and feel and function, well before the final restorations are delivered and seated.

DO MY DENTAL BENEFITS COVER THIS TREATMENT?

Aesthetic dentistry has never been more beautiful. New techniques and innovative dental materials and technology make creating your dream smile predictable, comfortable and convenient. Does your smile reflect the real you? Speak to a cosmetic dentist today. You’ll be glad you did!

Possibly, and in many instances, yes. Most dental offices will work with you to help you receive the full benefit your dental insurance company may be willing to offer. Photographs and specific x-rays are often required by your dental plan before benefits can be used.

Immune Boosting Herbs BY ANDREA SAZWAN CEO & FOUNDER OF CRYSTAL HILLS ORGANICS

It’s that time of year again when the cold season emerges. Sometimes we are lucky and our immune systems are strong enough to allow us to stay in a perfect state of health. However there are those times when life keeps us a little too busy, our stress levels rise and our immune system lowers its guard. It might start with a sniffle, a scratchy throat and then it is full out body aches, sore throat and fever.

B

eing an herbalist, I usually make my own herbal blends and infusions depending on the outcome I want to achieve. Perhaps a bit of elderberry or ginger is added as an antiviral, echinacea to boost the immune system, chamomile to calm and soothe the throat, peppermint or yarrow to sweat out a cold. However not everyone is fortunate enough to have a mini apothecary in their pantry; the good news is many grocery or health food stores stock a variety of herbs or herbal teas giving you the opportunity to create your own mixes to boost your immune system.

Here are the top 5 immune boosting herbs recommended to incorporate into your routine: ECHINACEA is a well-known herb for the prevention and treatment of the common cold and influenza. With its powerful antiviral ability, echinacea boosts your natural defence mechanisms throughout the winter months and has been scientifically proven to increase the production of our T-cells (a type of lymphocyte) and activate phagocytes (immune cells that engulf harmful foreign particles). GARLIC is one of those herbs known to many to be considered a cure-all with its antiviral, antifungal, antibacterial and antioxidant properties. Research has shown those who take garlic daily are less likely to contract the common cold than those who do not. Fresh garlic or 32

garlic juice can act as a natural broad-spectrum antibiotic with the benefit of encouraging friendly bacteria and improving intestinal flora. GINGER for medicinal usage can be traced back to ancient literature. This herb was used as a remedy for helping a variety of ailments. Ginger has antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory properties and is also a circulatory and immune stimulant. As an antiviral, ginger inhibits the attachment of viruses to the cells, thus preventing infection. PANAX GINSENG, known as Korean or Asian ginseng, is derived from the Greek word meaning “panacea”, which is a remedy or substance to cure all diseases. Panax Ginseng has been shown to act as immunomodulator meaning it is able to regulate the immune system and help to optimize the immune response thereby increasing the body’s ability to resist illness. ELDERBERRIES are known to have antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, analgesic, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties with the added benefit of being an immune stimulant. Elderberry is a valuable herb as it not only prevents infection, but also helps to heal an illness after it has taken hold. The dried berries can either be added into tea or made into a syrup. Be proactive and take good care!

am and Sharmain Llewelyn are the creators of Sabretooth Lifestyle, a business dedicated to producing convenient, clean food. They prepare top-quality, nutritionally dense meals that mirror what they make and eat at home, for smart, hardworking people who care about what they put in their bodies. “We offer all-natural, convenient food for individuals and families. Our readymade meals are free of gluten, grain, dairy and soy, and are available to area residents in a wide selection of locations across the Okanagan including gyms such as CrossFit Okanagan, the Farmers Market and Choices Market,” says Sharmain. Because our society operates more quickly, people have less time to prep and cook at home. More and more women have taken roles, which are increasingly demanding of their time, which means fewer hours to shop and serve nutritious meals at home. Convenience has always been attractive. Now thanks to Sabretooth, convenience doesn’t have to mean eating low quality food. Now working families can put high-quality, nutrient dense meals on the table. A fully qualified chef, Sam with a passion for cooking healthful, delicious meals knows there is real value in

We always have a Workout of the Day (WOD), which can be adapted or modified. We can incorporate lighter weights or clients can even use their own body weight for resistance. It’s all up to the person.” At Crossfit Okanagan, small groups of people work out together as a team, cheering one another on. Those

WHAT LIES AHEAD…

IN HOLISTIC HEALTH BY LORRAINE MILLER PHOTOS BY SUBLIME PHOTOGRAPHY

T

he brilliant Okanagan autumn sun streams through ultra-clean, (sparkling in fact) windows at Gravity Float & Wellness on S. Richter Street in Kelowna. As I enjoy a few minutes waiting for owner and visionary Banee Sandhu, I’m already feeling more relaxed. This serene sitting area blurs the lines between stylish spa and health centre. Banee’s homemade breakfast of Greek yogurt, fresh berries, flax as well as chai seeds is waiting for him, untouched on the table. When he joins me minutes later, he brings an aura of positive energy, health and enthusiasm.

I want what he’s having. And I’m not talking about the yogurt! Banee and his brother Navee are the hard working and inspiring duo behind Kelowna’s newest holistic approach to health and self-care that is Gravity Float & Wellness. “Your body runs as a highway. Your mind is directly connected to your physical state. Alleviating stress, maximizing mental potential and overcoming discomfort, and pain is what we strive to do.” Since opening in the spring of 2016 Gravity Float & Wellness has provided Float Therapy, Cryotherapy and Dreamwave Massage to their clients. Float Therapy uses Zero Gravity dynamics to create a unique sensory deprivation environment. It’s complete escape from light, noise, feeling and your cell phone, while drifting in a safe and perfectly hygienic Epsom salt pod. Cryotherapy is the sophisticated method of exposing skin to extremely cold temperatures for short periods of time. Used by weekend warriors, elite athletes and pain sufferers, Cryotherapy improves blood circulation and stimulates the body’s natural ability to eliminate toxins.

This cutting edge therapy is regarded as an effective treatment for arthritis, fibromyalgia, joint and muscular pain. Dreamwave Massage blends massage-healing techniques with modern design and technology. New this fall, and completing the circle to optimum health, Gravity Float & Wellness has brought on board registered massage therapist Megan Rolkoff and certified nutritionist Leah Green. A perfect companion therapy to a Float, a trip to the RMT can provide relaxation, reduction in muscle tension or relief from chronic pain or injury rehabilitation. In-house nutritional assessments provide counsel and coaching for overall GI health and for those who want a change in their diets. “Most people have deficiencies in their muscles (of some kind) and are in pain in general. This is how Floating and Massage work hand in hand.” Almost an hour later Banee still hasn’t finished his breakfast. His energy remains impressive as he shares stories about how his family’s strong work ethic fuels his life and business plans. Clients are coming and going through the doors, each having devoted a piece of their busy day to this or her own self care. Banee’s commitment to his clients is evident in every careful and caring interaction. Customer care is paramount and I hear it echoed in every detail of my visit. My curiosity has been piqued, and I’m ready to book my own Float session. Pricing and membership packages are available on line, allowing for a customized therapy plan. I believe people come into our lives for a reason, just as Kathleen stepped into mine at the perfect time with her unwavering strength and generosity. A few months before my diagnosis I was introduced to her through a mutual friend who thought our businesses would compliment each other. At this time, I was unaware that Kathleen, and her team at Glow, would become some of my biggest supporters. During this time of uncertainty and daily challenges, Kathleen fuelled and nourished my body with her fresh pressed juices. Her team helped to ensure that I had the nutrients I needed to help battle cancer as I underwent chemotherapy. It is individuals such as Kathleen and her staff who give freely of their time and their services who make this community what it is. I have such deep gratitude for everyone at Glow Juicery and all the ways in which I was supported and nurtured. After six months of intense treatments Kathleen is still here by my side fully supporting and nurturing me. Her amazing company is supplying me with juice and all of her amazing products, as I strengthen and restore my body from the inside out. As I move forward celebrating life, and all that it has to offer I know Kathleen and I, as well as her Glow team, will forever be connected.

Minda Lovelady I cannot say enough about Glow Juicery! Kathleen the owner and her wonderful, knowledgeable staff always greet me with genuine smiles and a warmth you don’t find very often. I love ALL of their amazing food! The juice, the salads, the healthy treats, the Glow bites….I could go on and on. Glow Juicery is an excellent place to start for someone who wants to eat healthier, those who want to delve into raw food, and those who just want a yummy good-for-you snack. I rely on Glow Juicery for ALL of those reasons. I’m in almost daily! My husband and son are just as big of fans as I am. Thank you Glow Juicery and thank you Kathleen! You Rock!

Eats & Drinks HOW TO MAKE A

The salad dressing is a wonderful thing that can encompass hundreds of recipes more complex than your simple vinaigrette. Cooking terms tend to be intimidating but in order to understand salad dressings lets get this word out of the way: Emulsion. An Emulsion is the result of combining two ingredients that otherwise do not mix (i.e: oil and water). A vinaigrette tends to be a "temporary emulsion" whereas if left to sit for an extended period of time, it will separate. Your popular dressings (russian, caesar, ranch, french) are all essentially "permanent emulsions" because they will not separate. The key is in the addition of egg yolk. An egg yolk can permanently bind two things that normally wouldn't mix. It is because it shares properties with both oil and water. Once you know the basis to making a dressing you can get creative and add whatever you want! EQUIPMENT NECESSARY: A blender or a bowl and whisk INGREDIENTS: 1 Egg Yolk 50 mL vinegar of your choice (apple cider, balsamic, red wine, white) 1 tsp mustard of your choice (dijon, grainy, yellow) 150 mL oil of your choice (canola, sunflower, olive, grapeseed) 1/2 - 1 small clove garlic (do you like garlic?) 2 tsp honey (sweetness is preference, try maple syrup or agave nectar) Salt and pepper to taste Anything else you want (fruit, seeds, lemon zest, shallot, herbs, ginger, carrot) METHOD: In a blender or bowl, begin by mixing the egg yolk, vinegar, and mustard. Slowly begin to add oil and once it starts to thicken, add remaining ingredients. Add the rest of the oil and season with salt and pepper. (You can make it thicker by adding more oil or thinner by adding more vinegar or water) Be creative and enjoy!

CHEFProfile - La Bussola Restaurant -

COCCARO

L This traditional southern Italian dish is a treat that Lauretta grew up eating with her family back home. She now enjoys growing her own zucchini flowers and preparing this spring blossom dish to share with the guests at La Bussola. INGREDIENTS

• • • • • • • • • • •

12 zucchini flower blossoms 100 g Grana Padano 100 g ricotta 100 g goat cheese 1 tsp minced Italian parsley 1 egg pinch of nutmeg pinch of salt black ground pepper to flavour 1 1/2 L vegetable oil 100 g rice flour (To roll the Zucchini flowers in before the batter)

BATTER

• 1 egg • 200 ml of sparkling mineral water • 200 g rice flour DIRECTIONS

In a medium-sized bowl mix the cheese, egg, parsley, nutmeg, salt and pepper. Remove the pistil of the zucchini blossom, wash flowers and discard pistils. Using a tablespoon, fill the zucchini blossom with the stuffing of mixed cheese, pepper and parsley. Fill a large bowl with ice, and place a medium bowl on top of the ice, then whisk the egg, water, and slowly add the rice flour a little bit at a time. Fill a pan with vegetable oil and put on medium heat. Once the oil is hot carefully place the battered zucchini flowers in the oil and turn so both sides cook equally. Once they are golden brown, remove. Place on a plate with paper towel to dry the excess oil, then move to a serving plate and garnish how you feel appropriate.

a Bussola, a Kelowna icon since 1974 is more than a place to dine. It is a way of being; warm hospitality and quality ingredients, a selection of more than 800 available wines and family. La Bussola means compass in Italian and has been a guiding force for the Coccaro family for the past 42 years. Owners, Franco and Lauretta, share family recipes with their guests one gourmet meal at a time. In this issue, we sat down with Lauretta to get to know the woman and chef at the heart of La Bussola and at the heart of the Coccaro family. HOW AND WHERE DID YOU ACQUIRE A LOVE OF COOKING? LC - When I was back home in Italy, growing up in the region of Campania I would enjoy cooking with my mother and grandmother (Nonna) using the fresh ingredients cultivated from our giardino. WHAT STAPLE INGREDIENTS CAN YOU NOT LIVE WITHOUT? LC - Garlic, onion, wine and olive oil, is usually in every meal I cook, oh and of course, fresh herbs. HOW DO YOU STAY INSPIRED IN THE KITCHEN? LC - I usually take a walk in the dining room after I’m finished cooking to see new or returning guests, enjoying my food and having a great time. That is the most inspiring thing. Also when I’m at home cooking I really enjoy my young granddaughter Olivia Rose cooking with me. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MEAL? PAIRED WINE? LC - Dinner without wine is like a day without sunshine. I always enjoy a meal when my whole family and friends can attend. As for wine, I leave that up to my husband and son; they are good at picking the right bottles for right foods and occasions. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU GIVE TO OUR READERS WHEN IT COMES TO PREPARING AN ITALIAN MEAL AT HOME? LC –Always use fresh herbs, have a well-stocked garden and use a little love, passion and quality ingredients. If you enjoy what you're doing you will always do a good job. Buon appetito!

6 Ways To Warm Up YOUR HOUSE THIS FALL BY JILLIAN HARRIS

One of my favorite things about the changing of the seasons is the changing of my home decor. I try to make sure that every season feels slightly different in my home to match with the outdoors. In the spring and summer, I like everything to be bright, light and airy. In the fall and winter, I like it to be cozy, warm and homey so that we can snuggle up indoors. 1. THROW BLANKETS: You can NEVER have too many throw blankets. These are always one of the best ways to accessorize your home for any season and any holiday. Put them all in a belly basket, hang them on a ladder or store them on an open shelf so that they look organized but are easily accessible.

2. CANDLES: Even if these don’t give off heat … they give the illusion of warmth. Fill

your fireplace with them if you’re not allowed to have fires and your living room will be snug as a bug. It will also leave all of your rooms smelling fresh and clean. Candle lit ambiance is known to relieve stress and anxiety after a long days work. I found this one (it’s on my Christmas wishlist) and it burns for 190 hours!!!!

3. PILLOWS: Just like throw blankets … you can never have too many throw pillows. I

like to change mine out seasonally to tie in the rest of the decor that I’ve pulled out. This also goes into play on your bed!!! Switch out your pillows so that your bed is always suiting the season and for the next few months … I say cozy it is!!

4. TEXTURES: Bring in different textures into ALL of your rooms. Add in thick knits, mixed with plush fabrics, and faux furs. The more textures in the same tones the better!! This will also help create warmth and depth in a room.

5. LIGHTING: If you are looking for a quick fix in any room, I always suggest changing

up your light fixtures or your light bulbs. This is a really great way to either warm up your room or cool it down depending on the season.

6. AREA RUGS: This is an EASY way to add warmth to any room especially if you have hardwood throughout your home. This is also an easy way to add colour and texture to your room which will make it feel that much more comfortable.

Why Do We Buy Art? I’ve never needed to ask myself that question, as the answer always seemed obvious. I love art! But who else does? I recently read an article written by Robert Klonoski, an assistant professor of Business in Virginia, who took an analytical look at who and why people buy art, original art in particular. He suggested this commodity is a luxury item that sells well in prosperous times and suffers during economic stress. He goes on to talk about discretionary spending and how art gratifies or satisfies. A sense of desire has different objectives as well. Will the art hang in a private space or a more public setting? Do you want others to know you own it? Klonoski even suggested some people buy art to keep up with the Jones’. All in all, the article was very interesting but ultimately I realized the answer was irrelevant. All commodities,

whether they are luxury items or necessities, fluctuate with the economy. So back to the original question...Why do we buy art? Its difficult to explain in words since is so much about emotion. We use such descriptive words to talk about art when all we need to do is look at it ourselves. Does it make you happy? Does is make you sad? Does the thought of owning it give you a sense of pride? Art is not just a commodity. I was recently asked if I would be interested in selling some of my personal art collection. The thought horrified me. Never, was my instant response. I have an emotional attachment to everything in my home. I have been told that it’s not normal to love ‘things’ that much. Gratefully, I’ve accepted not being normal! Whether you are simply browsing a gallery or you are an artist looking for inspiration, all visits are welcome. If you are anticipating a purchase of art, even better! There are many choices and there is something for every taste and budget.

Buying a home is stressful. You want to work with someone who can offer you peace of mind and who has your best interests at heart. Sara Lussier is this professional. A mortgage broker who works with young professionals buying their first home, seniors wishing to downsize, families looking to refinance, as well as others, Sara Lussier values integrity.

art of her job is to research and recommend the right products that match each client’s needs. “I match my clients with the best possible lender based on what each client brings to the table,” she says. As a working mom herself, Sara understands that people have goals, schedules, and financial metrics. “It’s about getting to know my clients. I gain insight into how I can tailor my services to add value to their lives.” Sara meets with clients when it’s convenient for them to provide home purchasing guidance. “After meeting with my client, I send them the necessary applications and a list of documents that lenders will require before giving them a pre-approval. This is the spring board to a well-designed file.” If a couple or individual has credit challenges, Sara helps them take action to turn their situation around. If a client has their finances in order, she can help them decide on a budget and can provide them with a pre-approval letter. This is critical, as sellers want to know the accepted offer will remain as is. As a licensed broker, Sara has access to big banks, credit unions, and lending alternatives to find the right product that will afford a better living situation for her clients. “A bank can only use their own in-house product, which is often a five-year fixed rate. Clients who have to break their mortgage early are subject to its high penalty. This is an ideal product for a conservative homeowner and it’s great for the bank because 6 out of 10 Canadian

homeowners break their mortgage within the first 36 months of a 60 month, or five-year, term. By getting to know my client’s goals, I can assess whether or not they need a fixed or variable option, and select different term lengths. My options are almost endless.” On top of the flexibility and knowledge Sara offers, she also assists her clients with finding the right realtors to fulfill their home buying criteria. “Kelowna is a fairly aggressive market with many sellers receiving multiple offers. With a pre-approval letter, a savvy realtor, and a list of wants and must haves, clients can shop confidently for the home of their dreams.” By helping to alleviate stress, calmer heads prevail; instead of worrying about the back end of buying a home, clients can enjoy the process. With tougher lending rules, an aggressive market, and so many products to choose from, it’s no wonder more and more people are choosing mortgage brokers as their home buying coaches. Best of all, mortgage brokers are free to the client. A mortgage broker is only compensated by the lender once a file is complete. “I want to educate people so when they come to me, I can match them up with the best products and partners.” Call Sara today to and put your mind at ease. Sazwan says her mission is to encourage a health-conscious lifestyle that promotes the healing powers of nature and the high vibration of crystals. In addition to their body care products, Crystal Hills also has a blog that features DIY beauty, healthy recipes, wellness and information on crystals and botanicals. She really wants people to get back to basics and incorporate a bit of nature to experience optimum health in their lives. Their blog can be found at www.crystalhills.com/blog. Even though her background is in biosciences and occupational health and safety, Sazwan says that one of her true passions has been learning about traditional remedies and natural alternatives that complement modern medicine. She went on to become a chartered herbalist and reiki master healer, and then studied organic skincare formulation. She loves reading about ancient methods and discovering what past healers may have used. Gathering information about crystals has definitely been one of her favourites. “Since ancient times, crystals have been prized for their beauty, to symbolize power and for their healing capabilities. These days, it seems that more and more of humanity is rediscovering their special qualities to help restore balance in our hectic and stressful lives.” She believes that what we apply on our body is just as important as the food we eat in restoring and maintaining the body’s harmony and vitality. It’s with these ideals that Crystal Hills Organics was formed. Crystal Hills has been gearing up for the holidays and has been making extra of their hottest sellers. Sazwan says the body serums are definitely the most popular but they continue to occasionally sell out of their sugar scrubs and bath salts as they are such a unique gift with the inclusion of the crystals.

The distillery sprung from the idea of using 100% locally grown fruits and grains to make premium, world-class spirits just a tractor-ride away from the orchards and fields where the base ingredients were grown. BC’s original harvestto-flask distillery now offers a selection of more than 25 internationally awarded spirits ranging from BC’s first Single Malt Whisky to Gins, Vodkas, Liqueurs, Fruit Brandies and even Aquavit and Absinthe. Okanagan Spirits is family owned and operated Distillery with two locations: one in Kelowna and one in Vernon. Both offer tours and tastings, and a chance to witness first-hand the magic of craft distilling at its best. Okanagan Spirits was awarded “Distillery of the Year” at the 2013 and 2015 World Spirits Awards (Klagenfurt, Austria in 2013, and Køge, Denmark in 2015). LET YOUR LIFE

Shine BY BRANDI PARNELL

Marie Kondō said, “You could say that tidying orders the mind, while cleaning purifies it.”

F

ew things evoke a sense of peace like coming home to a clean home. Elite Cleaning, a division of Elite Life & Home, wants you to have both an orderly, purified mind and home. Whether you’re looking to for a one-time cleaning service, before or after a special occasion or on a regular basis, Elite can assist. Their detailed, conscientious client care is second-to-none. However, it’s important to note, they aren’t simply a cleaning company. Imagine if you will, walking in the door of your home, on a Friday evening, after a full week at work. The first thing you notice is the shine from your walnut floors. The blinds are open as the setting sun pours in, no dust to be found. You take off your coat and put your attaché case away, everything is orderly and polished or wiped.

Let Elite stage your home for the

Holidays

As you enter the kitchen you can see the sparkle of stainless steel, picture-perfect windows and on the counter is the wine you requested to be picked up from your favourite tasting room. There is something serene about a home returned to its best state, ready to embrace living. As you open the refrigerator, you see it is stocked with all of the ingredients for tomorrow’s dinner party. Not one detailed has been overlooked. In my estimation of peace, I omitted the children underfoot and barking dog because sometimes those things fade into the background when everything else falls into place. Fresh cut flowers add a natural fragrance to a room; folded laundry can make the difference between sitting with your husband to catch up on the day or rushing to the laundry room to ensure all uniforms are dry and ready-to-go for weekend games and practices. Better still, having someone share your domestic load can mean you’re able to entertain and enjoy your downtime while still running a household, enjoying your family and managing a successful career. Whether you need help with the weekly cleaning at your vacation rental or help shutting down your lake house; whether you need someone to come in to set up for a family dinner or clean up the day after, Elite Cleaning is so much more. In fact, whenever you need extra help, once or on an ongoing basis, they are prepared to make life a little easier. Regular, weekly, bi-weekly, monthly or one-off assignments are all welcomed. So go ahead and embrace all life has to offer. With an extra set of hands, someone in your corner, you can have the life you imagined and the peace that comes knowing your home is clean, organized and ready for whatever even your social calendar, family or business dictates. JOE & ISABEL BEDARD

Two Artists,

What began as a hobby has evolved into much more for two retired, sought after Okanagan Valley artists.

grain pattern and color to create variations in the pattern like a jig-saw puzzle, and glued to wood backing which is sometimes cut to the outline shape of the image. “A lot of my stuff is all over the world,” he says. Joe designs furniture and accepts customer orders from all around the globe. One niche he has found is and using Intarsia to recreate wooden depictions of registered dogs. “For some reason, I can bring the personality of the dog to life just from a photograph.”

N

aturally gifted and kind beyond measure, Joe and Isabel Bedard are not only unassuming, they are a testament to love. Married for 53 years, they are lifelong friends and adventurous RVers. Joe’s career began in the oil patch, working rigs and pipelines in the Artic, including the Beaufort Sea. For many years he trucked along ice roads, calling home to Isabel. “We went out on 3 dates just after Isabel finished school. Then we were married. It was not always smooth, but we always had faith in one another,” says Joe.

“When we first got married I taught for about 5 years and then stayed home with our daughter, Cheri.” As opposite as two people can be, Isabel jokes, “I’ve always said God must have had a sense of humour when he set us up.” She was from a world of church, swimming pools and skating rinks.

Joe is nearly 80 years old. “Our time going south now is year to year. So, we’ll keep going south until we can’t. Then we’ll just create art right here in Kelowna,” Isabel laughs. Part of Gallagher’s Canyon Art Society, they see no slowing down in sight. “We work together, critique one another very extensively and we never go to bed mad.” So gentle one might be taken aback by the magnificence of their creations. A truly talented team, their work can be seen on display at Glenmore Gift Gallery. By the end of the conversation Joe and Isabel had invited me for a glass of BC wine and a T-bone steak. “I make the best steak around, if I do say so myself. We have a beautiful home, with a couple of kilns and lots of sawdust. You’re always welcome.” I just may take them up on their offer.

As for Joe, “I left home at 15 years old and let’s put it this way, my life was a long ways away from perfect.” Yet, somehow their life together was. After retiring, the Bedards settled into a community in Mesa, Arizona where they winter. “For $15, you can take various art classes such as silversmith, leather making or whatever. Joe ended up in woodwork where he found his love and I dabbled in ceramics using various mediums.” Second love that is. “We learned everything down there and it’s been an incredible ride. People just keep finding us.” Isabel’s ceramics are made using an ancient process, called horsehair ceramics that has been updated for modern kilns. The pieces are fired at a low temperature, removed from the kiln, one at a time, after being cooled and finished with strings of horsehair. Joe individually handcrafts each piece using Intarsia, a woodworking technique that uses varied shapes, sizes and species of wood fitted together to create a mosaic-like picture with an illusion of depth. Intarsia is created through the selection of different types of wood, using their natural

It is regional flavours and local wines. It is warm muscles and warmer hearts.

Our Big White is customizable, changes constantly and lasts an afternoon or a season. It is family time and time to decompress. And, it always, always includes après ski where we recant our runs, share our stories and love our lives.

Carving Out

Adventure BY BRANDI PARNELL PHOTOS PROVIDED BY BIG WHITE

Regardless of your personality, your vibe or your schedule, there is plenty of adventure waiting just outside your back door. Eleanor Roosevelt said, “The purpose of life is to live it, to taste experience to the utmost, to reach out eagerly and without fear for newer and richer experience.”

F

or decades, researchers have studied the positive effects of outdoor activities. In fact, Health, Well-Being and Open Space (UK), a Literature Review about the benefits of being outdoors. by Nina Morris cites, “Physical activity in the natural environment not only aids an increased life-span, greater well-being, fewer symptoms of depression, lower rates of smoking and substance misuse, but also an increased ability for individuals to function better at work and home.”

And so it is that an active lifestyle, which includes nature, can not only make you live longer, but also lead to a richer experience. Rather than argue with science, we strapped on our gear and headed up to the mountain. After parking and unloading, we were assaulted with the scenery, fresh cool inhalations filled our lungs and the bright vibrant colours of winter wear.

I am a skier; while Mint’s publisher, Rhonda, is an avid boarder. We purchased our lift tickets and headed uphill. Skiing for me has always been a rush. The downward exhilaration that pulls me out of my head is a rush juxtaposed against the serenity of riding the lift back up.

It is a me versus the hill scenario, it is a reminder to do something every day that makes me feel alive, it is conquering one fear after another.

Big White has every culinary option to satisfy a light hunger or a hearty, stick-to-your-ribs, appetite. With sun on our faces and warmth in our muscles, we relaxed into a day spent outside, traversing the wonders abound, tasting the experience to the utmost.

One of the things I love so much about being on the mountain is that everyone can go at their own pace, push their own limits, challenge their own boundaries. One text and we meet at Sessions

Naturally we slow as the day progresses and find ourselves chatting with strangers, sharing our stories and meeting up on the runs. We make a point of stopping in at the Moonlight Bistro to warm up.

NEW at Big White this Season! THE CLOCKTOWER COFFEE CO. is Big White’s newest specialty coffee outlet. Set to open in the Village Centre Mall this season, Clocktower will have the most convenient ski-in, ski-out location in the resort. THE BULLWHEEL GASTROPUB. Located in the heart of the Village, the family-friendly, slopeside restaurant will be open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, with a sports bar and outdoor patio available for après-ski fun. BIG WHITES AT BIG WHITE. is back this season. Whether you enjoy the crisp, refreshing taste of a Pinot Gris or the luscious feel of a Viognier, enjoy an evening of tasting that brings together amazing food and white wine from across the Okanagan Valley.

No matter your desire, whether it is a cold pint or a fine dining experience, it all exists here. We booked a night at Chateau Big White so we can après ski until the stars are out and the moon lights up the sky. The Market sells groceries as well as beer and liquor, but we decide to make our rounds, visiting friends at Globe Cafe and Tapas Bar and then settling in for a nightcap. Our bodies feel relaxed and our minds at ease. Truth be told, we could have sipped lattes and people watched; we could have sunk into the hot pools and spent the day zenning out. We could have crossed-country skied or snowshoed, because that’s

the sort of place here. Your day here is anything but office-like and completely catered to you. So the next time you feel like bettering your life, expanding your awesome or increasing your ability to function optimally at work or home, blow off the day and reconnect with your inner warrior. You deserve it. For more information or to plan your next trip to Big White Ski Resort, visit them online at www. bigwhite.com.

REAL adore WEDDINGS

Jennifer and Steve JESSICA BALFOUR PHOTOGRAPHY

Steve and Jessicz met in Fall of 2011 in the library at university. By the end of the school year they had moved in together and then graduated together on the same day just one short year later. After graduation, Steve jumped right into his career and Jessica set off to teach English in France for 8 months. In the years since we have been reunited in Kelowna, they've both built their careers, travelled, and shared countless moments with friends and family as they built a life together. Steve popped the question while hiking on of their favourite Okanagan trails on Thanksgiving weekend, 2015—exactly one year before their wedding day this year. His proposal and sweet words were slightly off-the-cuff, goofy, and perfect. They chose to have a Fall wedding because, to them, it represents exciting new beginnings. In terms of theme, they tried to keep everything as natural and simple as possible while channeling the rich fall colours and the comfort of harvest season. Having Linden Gardens as their ceremony and reception location was perfect for it’s natural beauty and privacy. Although they had our reception indoors, the vaulted ceilings, Edison string lights, and large windows that peer into the lush gardens created an inside-outside experience. Kristen at Lavender and Lace Floral Farm created Jessica's stunning jeweltoned bouquet and the vine garland for their tables. Steve chose an unreal line up of southern comfort food featuring pulled-pork, bacon mac & cheese, baked beans, and cornbread. Sticking with the comfort food/ harvest theme, they opted for a variety of pies for their guests instead of a traditional wedding cake. Our wedding favours were fresh, local apples and the most delicious apple fritters brought all the way from the Lumby bakery—they are that good. Jessica Balfour, their photographer was a dream to work with. Her calm disposition kept them relaxed as they floated through one of the best days of their lives. Jessica was able to skillfully and beautifully capture moments they never would have even thought to remember.

VENDORS we ADORE “I just decided to go for it,” she said. “I wanted to create a destination that specialized in unique service. I am a makeup artist by trade so beautiful has always been a part of my world.” Lisa’s shop, Lillian Wild Bridal, was opened and named after a blushtinged peony carried in her own wedding bouquet. It’s a quaint boutique filled with good energy and cupcakes. “My shop is a chic loft space with beautifully hung dresses.” Lisa and her mom take care of every bride, by appointment only. That being said, there are no set hours, they work on a bride-by-bride basis. Early morning or late evening appointments are not unusual. “I want every one of my brides to feel like a princess for the day. And, I don’t want her to share her time with anyone else. I want her to feel like we’ve shut the store down for tea, coffee, hot chocolate and of course, cupcakes so that she and her tribe can get comfortable here.” While sourcing lines for the store, and thinking about best practices, Lisa had a recurring thought. "I kept envisioning a line of mix and match options where you could have a hand in designing your own dress. Customizable that didn’t cost a fortune." So with my mom’s help, we sketched out what I was thinking. I then reached out to tons of different designers and happily connected with Patty Nayel of Pure Magnolia.” Lisa now designs and sells her own collection of Lillian Wild dresses, soon-to-be across North America and Europe. “My own dress, Nova with the Heritage lace overlay outsells any other dress I carry,” she says with pride. Married to Wayne, her high school sweetheart, Lisa offers to her brides some industry wisdom, “Come knowing your budget,” although most of the dresses she designs and carries range in price from $1,000 to $2,900. “Try, try, try! I have seen every dress on every body type. It doesn’t hurt to try it on, you just never know. And of course, allow six to 12 months lead time.” Because they don’t stock mainstream designer, very line available at Lillian Wild, is exclusive to them in the Okanagan. “The shop style is definitely more geared towards a boho, romantic bride. Someone that wants something just a little different and unique. You won’t find a ton of princess dresses here.” Lillian Wild Bridal carries samples in sizes ranging from 6 to 28. When a wedding invitation arrives in the mail, guests have their first glimpse of what the wedding will be like – formal, casual, silly or classic – but above all, unique to the couple. “Not only does your wedding invitation set the tone for your event, it gives your guests something to hang onto as a keepsake – something to put on the fridge. It’s the first glimpse of what to expect for your big day,” Carrie explains. “And it’s nice to receive a beautiful invitation in the mail – something that’s not a bill.” In addition to invitations – sometimes including custom maps and reply cards – Carrie designs envelope liners, tags to hold everything together, and label wraps for envelopes. She also designs items for the wedding day and after, like programs, menu cards, favour tags, place cards, table numbers, seating charts, banners, signs and thank you cards – pretty much anything the client can dream up. helps the couple communicate with their guests by providing essential information to help them enjoy the day. But they also communicate more subtle messages about who the couple is, what they value and their love story. So how do these beautiful, one-of-a-kind items become reality? Carrie begins by meeting with the client to ask a few questions about her vision for the day. The client might share a few pictures of what she has in mind. Carrie takes these ideas as a base and incorporates her own ideas to match the vision and inject the couple’s personality – something you can’t buy on Mint or VistaPrint. “I want each invitation set to be totally different from what you can order online,” she says. “I want it to be a little package that represents the couple and their wedding day.” When it comes to a signature look or feel, Carrie says she doesn’t have one. She loves mid-century modern décor and its balance of negative space with corresponding pops of colour and pattern. But the real world is a far better source of inspiration. “I sometimes just get inspired hanging out with my kids or going for a walk,” she says. “The Okanagan is great for that.” The Okanagan is great for industry support and collaboration too. “The wedding industry here is amazing, we all work together to achieve the same goal and that is to create the best possible day for our couples.” Whatever your style, you can be sure that with Ginger Creative, you’ll end up with just the right mix of sugar and spice. later, the rest is history! Andrew and Courtney love the fact that the origin of their relationship stems from the special people in their lives. Courtney grew up in the Okanagan so she always envisioned having her wedding in a vineyard in Kelowna. Over 90% of their guests traveled to celebrate with them so they wanted to give them the total Okanagan experience. This was one reason they chose Summerhill Pyramid Winery and the Hotel Eldorado as their wedding venues.

Another special moment was the intimate First Look at the lush Gellatly Nut Farm in West Kelowna. Truly a moment they will never forget! Perhaps the most beautiful aspect of their special day was the fact that all of their family, friends and absolute favorite people in the world had all come together in this magical destination to celebrate as they began their life together. F IR ST M E E TI NG

We both commented on a Facebook picture of probably the best mullet I have ever seen in my life. We tossed jokes back and forth, I added her as a friend and sent her a pm. We just we hit it off from there.

Funny story actually, we met through Facebook. We were both commenting on a picture of a mutual friend which resulted in Chris sending me a private message.

FIR ST DAT E We met at Turtle Bay Pub for diner. She looked so beautiful I couldn't keep my eyes off her. We had an amazing time. I may have gotten a little freaked out cause I knew she was wife material.

We met for dinner at this cute little pub on the water. We immediately hit it off and shared a lot of laughs. After dinner we made plans for a second date and I was over the moon with excitement. Christopher got cold feet and blew me off and didn't call me back for two months!

F IR ST KISS

I walked her to her car to say goodbye gave her a hug and just went for it. I could've kissed her all night.

We were over at a mutual friend's house having a fire and Christopher pulled me away from the group and kissed me! I was so giddy and nervous that it was hard to play it cool.

T H E O NE I knew right away, I can't explain it. Everything about her felt right.

I knew before we even met in person. Handsome, tattooed, and funny...sold!

F IR ST I LOV E YOU Big White Resort. We had little weekend ski get away and after a couple glasses of wine our feelings came out.... hahaha.

After a couple months of dating, the two of us went on a snowboard trip to Big White Ski Resort ( the same place our engagement photos were taken). After a beautiful day in the snow we went out for dinner and Christopher told me that he loved me. I told him the feeling was 100% mutual! 46

T H E PRO P OSA L It was Kelsey's birthday. I booked an entire restaurant and made it look like it was a romantic diner for two, just us in the whole building. Then I had a flash mob of friends and family come through the door bumping music. As they came in they were blowing bubbles and handing Kelsey small gifts. When she was busy getting all the attention I snuck to the back of the group with my guitar. As the group finished coming in they all silenced and I walked through them towards Kelsey, singing and playing a song I had written. When I got to her I got down on one knee and proposed. After she stopped crying she said yes!!!

Our proposal was very romantic. Chris rented out an entire restaurant (which I thought was my birthday surprise) and had a beautiful table set for two. A few minutes after we sat down the doors of the restaurant opened and our family and friends surrounded me with birthday love. Chris snuck away and moments later the crowd divided into two lines. Chris came walking through playing the guitar and singing a song he wrote for me. The last words on the song were, "I just want it to be you and me so I get down on one knee." And then he proposed!!!

PIECES OF ADVICE FROM THE WEDDING CAFÉ

TIPS we ADORE

3

A LIST VENDORS- we partner with wide variety of wedding professionals servicing the Okanagan. We do background checks and keep track of experiences with the vendors to ensure you’ll be choosing a credible business. Like the venues, each vendor has their own profile with images and links to

point imaginable for couples

what style fits you.

planning. Some have no limit while others are working with a more conservative amount. Either way, we’re designed to be able to help all budgets and be creative with you to find the perfect options that match your budget. We also have a Wedding Saver coupon book that comes out each year with great deals to our vendors and venues!

2

4

CREATIVE IDEAS- nowadays all new brides have planned out their entire wedding on Pinterest before even getting engaged. Those beautiful ideas don’t always match up with their budget or the item doesn’t exist in the Okanagan. We’ve helped hundreds of couples take those visions boards and mold them to fit their situation.

VENUES- finding your perfect venue is likely the toughest decision you’ll make with planning your big day! It dictates your guest count, theme, budget, travel/accommodation options and more. There are a ton of wonderful venues in the Okanagan, and often they book up far in advance. On our website, each venue has their own profile with pictures for you to get a good idea of the feel. We know the venues off the top of our heads and the aspects of each one and to help you find your dream location.

5

WEDDING COACH- we’re a mother and daughter team who has been on the other side of planning getting frustrated with the process. We found out the hard way that testimonials can be written by a non credible source and that not all vendors fit your budget. We’re your trusted guiding voice that can help you from ‘yes’ through to ‘I do’. We’re objective along with the knowledge of what’s possible in this market place for your wedding. A common sentence we hear from couples is “why didn’t I come to you sooner?”. We truly love putting smiles on peoples faces and helping this exciting day come to life in a fun and positive way!
