MIRACLE letters
Steve Olsen Winnipeg, Canada The article on multiple identity disorder was a marvellous piece of fiction. I admire how the writer took the element of a doll to depict the much fictionalised disorder. It was beautifully interpreted. Also, the unprecedented take on this subject is really not found much often.
Urvashi Manchanda Chandigarh, India The quotes and the section heads are such an appropriate and poetic description of depression. The one from the “bug” shoot is my personal favourite. The writers of the magazine deserve accolades.
Emily London, UK
Jennifer Davis Sydney, Australia
It is amazing how the youth is creating platforms promoting other young talents and growing together. I’ve followed Miracle since its second issue and really like the collection of poetry, every single time. Also, the photo series of the depression issue was really mind-boggling.
Miracle always satisfies its readers by bringing a spotlight to the exceptional. This gives them an edge over the others. I love how this magazine, unlike the others focus on the youth and amateur artists from all over the world and provide them a platform to showcase their art!
Ryan O’brien San Diego, CA The poetry section has been a highlight in all the issues. Poetry by ‘Gabriel Desmar’ is my personal favourite. I love how they’ve linked the depression issue with the re-birth issue as its counterpart. And the fact that they cater work from artists all over the world. Keep up this amazing work, you guys.
robert matthews new york Miracle manages to dig through and find the finest works by youth and amateur artists. It is always mesmerising and inspirational to go through such quality inputs. Working on a combination of professionals and amateurs to put together a magazine is the distinct factor that sets miracle apart in the market.
Rahat kalra mumbai, india The interview with Daljit Nagra was truly inspiring with his traces of India in a British setup. I went on to read his collection after reading the interviw and the creativity in his works is by far unmtachable. Interviews like these make you explore writers like him. I’m looking forward to reading more of such interviews.
alex sanders ireland The most captivating factor of the magazine is the theme which is carried through every aspect and stitched into every column perfectly. From photoshoots to poetry and literature everything was deeply catenated by the depression theme.

MIRACLE Editor’s Letter
The office had a euphoric environment when I announced we complete five years in a few weeks. Every team member went over and above with their creative minds lingering ideas for the ‘Re-birth’ Issue. Through the whole process, this issue became very special to us and made each one of us grow beyond measure. The ‘Re-birth’ Issue rings a special cord for me. The cover itself speaks the transformation of our previous issues. Miracle can now be counted as a full- fledged magazine and deserves the accolades it would thereby procure. The issue starts with a vibrant section of everything we adore in fashion to travel and food. The magazine sets afoot with its vibrant poetry and strikes an intelligent note with the ‘Sanguine’ article that contrasts with the previous ‘Depression’ Issue. Furthermore, the issue leads into a new introduced category for Miracle: Fashion. The section includes hand-picked and billowing runway trends by the Miracle Editors. It’ll be your perfectly adequate summer shopping guide whether its swimwear, high-end or beauty shopping. Plus, the special pink-themed photoshoot is an eye candy. Elsewhere in the magazine, you would find traces of food, home decor and travel, with an exclusive interview on ‘Bruised Passports’. I wouldn’t say more and let you discover the new Miracle on your own. Really hope you like and appreciate the active efforts of my team in bringing this issue possible. I wish you a happy summer!
Until next time,

thing less messy. Your floors, you just washed them.”
arco led the razor up the thin neck of a young man seated in front of him. The skin quivered and the barber’s eyebrows furrowed. “Why do you keep shaking?”
“Oh don’t worry about that. That bowl is enormous! You just need to shake a bit less, my son. Now this will hurt, so try not to jolt.” The barber held the man’s arm above the bowl and sliced the arm with his razor, a small gash, about an inch thick, blood flowing down into the bowl like a crimson waterfall, as the young man shrieked, his stomach gripping him forcefully. He looked away from his bleeding arm.
“I’m sorry,” he looked down, coughing a little.
“This will f-f-fix my problem?”
“Well, what’s wrong? If you don’t calm down, we’re going to have an accident and I just mopped this floor not 20 minutes ago.”
“Absolutely, come back two more times, tomorrow and the next day, and after that, good as new. You have a return of the symptoms, just come in again and I’ll take care of it, but this generally works quite well.”
Marco slowed the pace of the blade, as the word accident had made the shaking worse. “I’m just a bit nervous because... um, after this I’d like to discuss a... medical issue. You are a barber-surgeon, right?” “I see... Yes, I am. We’ll discuss that later, but just try to keep calm.”
The young man nodded. Two more visits, this had better be worth it. He felt weaker by the second as the shaking worsened, his arm already freezing cold and throbbing. “Hold still, we’re almost finished.”
“SANGUINE, TOO MUCH BLOOD. HOLD THIS.”
The man nodded and the barber recoiled. “No nodding! Just stay still!” “Yes, sir. Thank you, sir.”
Looking down for a moment, he saw the bowl filling rapidly with blood, almost halfway filled, so instead he fixed his gaze on a portrait on the wall. “Sanguine. I hear that word a lot. What does it mean?” the young man asked.
After his beard was shaved off, the young man followed the barber to the back room, an open space with sparse furniture. They both sat on wooden chairs as the young man coughed again.
“It means you’re energetic, happy, you look on the bright side, you’re a chatterbox. Usually your skin is ruddy, like yours.”
“What ails you, boy?”
“You don’t say!”
“Well, lately I’ve been feeling short of breath and coughing and I have this sharp pain in my chest that comes and goes and it’s rather concerning.”
He chuckled, “and aloof sometimes and I like to play guitar and sometimes I’m dishonest. I don’t think what you said is the full picture of my temperament.”
“And your complexion... ruddy. Yes, I know what this is.”
“Are you saying that I’ve made a mistake?”
Please not bloodletting, please let it be something else, please, please, please, the young man pleaded in his mind.
He looked back at the barber, razor blade still in hand, “no, of course not. I’m just saying that I’m not just a bloke with ruddy skin that talks a lot.”
“Sanguine, too much blood. Hold this,” he placed a wide bowl in the young man’s hands who held it on his lap. The bowl rattled violently. No, no, no. “Are you sure this is necessary? Perhaps you could try some-
“I’m some of those things, but I’m also rather nervous--”
“Right now you are,” the barber mumbled. The bleeding had slowed down, so the barber sanitized the wound and bandaged it as the young man winced again, “you’re a funny man, you are. Well, I will see you tomorrow for your next appointment. Be there at noon.”

“Yes, sir. Thank you for the... bloodletting,” the young man
practically jumped out of his chair and then stumbled onto the street. His vision was hazy as he slowly made his way home, silently vowing never to enter that barber shop again. Suddenly his heart jolted, the stabbing pain forcing him to sit on a bench for a moment. He sighed, “I suppose I will come in tomorrow after all.”
“Sanguine is probably not a familiar word to the average person in the 21st century. It sounds like an archaic, flowery word like mead or consumption. However for around 2,000 years, from the time of the Greek empire to around 1900, it was as commonplace as the word cholesterol. In fact, it was a very important medical term for physicians at the time.” *****
S
anguine is one of the four humours, a system used by physicians that uses four main categories to diagnose patients. It was invented by the Greek physician Hippocrates and used in the Greek empire, the Muslim empire and Medieval Europe. The four humours are based on four fluids within the body; yellow bile (choleric), black bile (melancholic), phlegm (plegmatic) and blood (sanguine). A balance between the humours in the body means that you are healthy. However, if you have a significant imbalance, meaning that there is too much of a fluid, then the doctor can find out what humour is in excess and adjust the humours accordingly.
- Natural leader - Quick to anger - Bossy - Bold - Ambitious - Courageous - Impatient
Melancholic: - Quiet - Serious - Thoughtful - Organized - Pessimistic - Artistic - Perfectionist Phlegmatic: - Lazy - Relaxed - Passive - Sensitive - Loyal - Kind - Patient Sanguine: - Optimistic - Friendly - Outgoing - Joyful - Enthusiastic - Impulsive - Confident In order to balance their humours, people in that period would eat certain foods, for example wine is a choleric food and it would help balance the humours of a phlegmatic person. Patients might also change their lifestyle, occupation, climate or use medicine, such as bloodletting. A person’s appearance could also indicate their temperament; sanguine people had ruddy skin, phlegmatics were overweight usually, melancholics thin and cholerics were red-heads. You could also use the four humours to diagnose mental illness; excess yellow bile or blood could lead to mania whereas too much black bile could lead to depression. As one of the first personality tests, the four temperaments paved the way for modern personality tests, such as the Keirsey Temperament Sorter and the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, tests that attempted to expand on the four humors. I have always been very interested in personality tests and I have taken the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator Test several times. I even bought a book about the test but I returned it shortly after buying it because every time I took the test I’d get a different result. Always introverted, but the other variables would constantly change as I turned over the questions in my head.
Not only was this the main way to diagnose patients at the time, but it was also the main way to predict a person’s character, like a horoscope. Choleric:

MIRACLE fifiliterature However, whenever I would read about the type that I was for the day, it would all sound so familiar, like that was exactly who I was and what I cared about. As someone who has never quite been able to pick a vocation, I’d voraciously look at the careers they suggested for me and think, “finally!” A simple solution for a very complex question. I find that I have the same reaction with horoscopes and with most personality tests. The inaccuracy of horoscopes has been proven as well. Studies have concluded that astrology is no more accurate than chance. The other personality tests are no better; the psychologist Carl Jung’s work which influenced the other personality tests that were mentioned was based on anecdotal evidence, clinical observation and introspection which were inconclusive methods. Furthermore, the inventors of the Myers-Briggs test did not receive formal education in psychology. You could almost say that the humours personify emotions; sanguine is happy, choleric is angry, phlegmatic is relaxed and melancholic is sad. Indeed, the modern definition of melancholic is “a feeling of pensive sadness” according to the New Oxford American Dictionary. Also, the definition of sanguine is “blood red” and “optimistic.” I have noticed the same thing with the four humours as I have with the personality tests. I can see myself in the descriptions and I can see family members, coworkers and friends, as different temperaments. All the same, that’s just part of who they are; it’s not the whole, it’s just a few vague characteristics that most people possess at one point or another. It’s all coincidental. To me it seems too simple to put humans, such complex organisms, into tiny boxes like Sanguine and Leo and INFP. The human brain contains about 86 million nerve cells and it weighs about 3 pounds. There has to be more to our personalities than that. What I trust more is psychology because there is more research involved. I really do wish I could believe that you can simply take a personality test and find out who you are and what field is best for you. It would make soul-searching so much easier. However, as the opera singer Beverly Sills says, “There are no shortcuts to any place worth going.” I find it concerning that the Kiersey Temperament Sorter and the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator are used in hundreds of schools and workplaces. It isn’t helpful to rely on pseudoscience and personality tests to try to find out who you are and solve your problems. While it’s definitely fun to take these tests, you shouldn’t rely on their answers. What’s better is to take the long way and learn for yourself; talk to people, research careers, see a therapist, try out different jobs and seek out new experiences.

Dancing Jellyfish
Milton P. Ehrlich
the sea is all around us
G
- T.S. Elliot
ilt-edge rays of sunlight pierce spumes of whitecaps illuminating a flotilla of opalescent jellyfish suspended under blue-green algae, maiden hair and winged kelp.
They float along a gyre of Gulf Stream. A tug of war between moon and sun allows the earth to breathe, tides fall and rise sweeping globular medusa umbrellas to and from shore. Their strong muscular pulsations of gelatinous mass, opaque as a windowpane make them look like outer space invaders. But they mind their own business with four mouths to feed, gorging on planktonic soup and diatoms so tiny in their eerie glow of luminescence, the naked eye can’t see. Their radial symmetry of shades mauve and pink and their rhythmic bounce resemble ethereal dancers undulating in slow-motion, a belly-dance for an audience of purple sea urchins, periwinkles and gold star tunicates who must be cheering them on with ululating cries of joy that can’t be heard. Lion mane male jellyfish with pink gonads are delighted to be invited to join the underwater dance.

he blanket of darkness releases its hold, in anticipation from winter to spring, while each passing minute thaws into the light revealing its slumbering secrets. Such vulnerability merits respect, for surely these tenuous moments in time of sweet, gentle blossoms and soft, tender shoots are subject to weathery perils. Transitional focus brings strange ironies across snowy gardens all newly exposed. So raw are the changes, a new destiny to be found in this fresh transformation. Miraculous season, the Spring Equinox return of the bright, all her colors reborn in a rainbow of flowers, and trees blooming full, and the song of the birds and the bees.

e drove to the lake, then stopped at my grandmother’s. The grown ups sat in the screened porch on wicker or the glider whispering above the clink of ice in wet glass. Spirea and yellow roses circled the earth under stars. A silver apple moon. Bored and still sweaty, my sister and I wanted to sleep out on the lawn and dragged out our uncle’s army blankets and chairs for a tent. We wanted the stars on our skin, the small green apples to hang over the blanket to protect us from bats. From the straw mats, peonies glowed like planets and if there was a breeze, it was roses and sweat. I wanted our white cats under the olive green with us, their tongues snapping up moths and whatever buzzed thru the clover. For an hour the porch seemed miles away until itchy with bug bites and feeling our shirts fill with night air, my hair grow curlier, our mother came to fold up the blankets and chairs and I wished I was old enough to stay alone until dawn or small enough to be scooped up, asleep in arms that would carry me up the still hot apartment stairs and into sheets I wouldn’t know were still warm until morning

Silhouettes in the mist S
Gabriel Desmar
pring runs the parks, and brings fragrances and new songs, and one couple circulates on it, with his feet do not touch the ground. They walk by a special ether, It is a world just for them, and laughter and gestures are eternal, and they go into that dimension. Evenings bring some coastal fog, makes destinations being lost, all it wrapped in a mystical air, and you enter an enigmatic system. They are prints of a painting, are touches of sensations, and all decant into the sky, which is closed to transport them. Sometimes in these springs, and far away like another world, They move in its own remoteness two silhouettes lost in the mist.

Bottles Of Tears capturing the melancholia within Photographed by: Suvir Tandon, Arjun Dosanj Model: Kunwar Arora Written by: Srinjoy Dey

All it takes is that one drop of tear to send ripples down the infinite cosmos that we are surrounded by. Bottle of tears is our homage to the most powerful emotion that runs through a soul - sadness, in its purest and unadulterated form.

e fight the same battles that others do, and sometimes we lose them. It’s funny how our losses are made to seem different, as if it carries a deeper shame than those of the others, as if the clouds that hover over our fate were to flood out the roads we chose to travel. But when the rain eventually falls, it bites the dust and percolates through our skin. We soak it, let it absorb us, become one with us, and feel it run through the empty channels of our veins. The sorrow is thinned by the blood pumping out of our hearts. The pictures depict our battle with depression, and the stigma surrounding portraying feelings openly amongst the male social circle. Seldom do we choose to acknowledge the bottles of tears we have been filling up, let alone open and taste the truth of our identities – the pursuit of happiness often lies in letting ourselves drown, only to emerge from the abyss – a true human being. 38

Are We Still Smitten By the Kitten Heels? Yes, is the answer. Footwear of all kinds come and go, but trends go on forever. Andre Perugia invented this masterpiece who began designing shoes in 1906. Kitten heels was a trendsetter back in the 1950’s when Audrey Hepburn started this vogue. At present celebrities like Michelle Obama and Theresa May have revived this trend with their unique sense of style.

Another modern wave of this trend has come up through various brands like Dior and Prada who are taking over the Fashion Industry. POWER DRESSING For spring 2017, fashion is recreating power dressing in its ultra feminine ways. From Louis Vuitton’s check cape to Prada’s marabou trimmed pencil skirts power dressing was transformed into a wide ranging and refreshingly individualistic collection. The tailoring trends this season are majorly influenced by pronounced shoulders and elegantly pressed slacks mark.
FAVOURITE THINGS: Shoes:Dior and Sophia Webster; Bag: Fendi; Beauty essential: I always wake up with puffiness under my eyes, so an under eye corrector is my favourite beauty cult. Favourite high-street brand: Zara
“Suit, trousers and long hemlines maybe a comeback of the 1970s but the power dressing in 2017 is wide ranging and refreshingly individualistic. “

a w o t flicks An action thriller about an elite team of undercover Israeli commandos working in Palestine, is perhaps one of the best of Netflixs recent foreign-language shows. It is a frantically paced and politically charged melodrama replete with sequ ences of white- knuckle suspense straight out of Homeland or 24. But unlike those spy dramas, Fauda spends nearly as much time on the private lives of Palestine as it does on its gun-toting heroes. The show has got a moral complexity that is worth watching.

The deep sense of artistry of De Gournay creates pieces which seem to have real soul and the belief that women should wear shoes as beautiful as those designs is what drew Aquazzura. These colorful and contemporary brands are an ideal union between two genres who share a commitment to create beauty. The masterpieces definitely show De Gour-
nay’s area of expertise but it was Osorio who suggested 19th century botanical illustrations and Juan Gatti’s paintings as a reference. The launch was held during Paris fashion week at the hotel d’Évreux, Vendôme where the capsule collection was presented with De Gournay’s magic and Aquazzura’s presentation. The model adding glitter to the show is Arizona Muse, who is also the brand ambassador of Aquazzura. This engaging mixture of fashion and home décor is sure to catch your eye over champagne and cocktails. There is an exotic and magical jungle created by fantasies and is detailed, hand-painted, timeless and extremely modern at the same time. With that tropical vibe and florals hitting around, they have scenes of decorative butterflies, swinging monkeys, banana leaves & palms, and flowers. The scenes of detailed splendour, against the pink ground of antiqued painted silk which seem to be inspired by tones of palazzo walls of Aquazzura’s Florentine headquarters depict those lovebirds and parrots alongside jewel toned serpents.
From embroidered flats to heels and pumps, they feel like a dream come true. The powder pinks and greens display a dazzling array of flora and fauna in these five styles. It looks like a hand-painted rainforest within the heart of the city. The artwork on the walls brings out the new aesthetics as it gets paired with the elegant footwear. Those walls are surely to give a sophisticated welcome with a
definite stare in awe. Being drawn

WHat we’re obseesing over Summer
Reading List A Horse walKs into a bar David Grossman The setting is a comedy club in a small Israeli town. An audience that has come expecting an evening of amusement instead sees a comedian falling apart on stage; an act of disintegration, a man crumbling before their eyes as a matter of choice. They could get up and leave, or boo and whistle and drive him from the stage, if they were not so drawn to glimpse his personal hell. Dovale Gee, a veteran stand-up comic – charming, erratic, repellent – exposes a wound he has been living with for years: a fateful and gruesome choice he had to make between the two people who were dearest to him.

On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth CentuRY
Timonthy Snyder The Founding Fathers tried to protect us from the threat they knew, the tyranny that overcame ancient democracy. Today, our political order faces new threats, not unlike the totalitarianism of the twentieth century. We are no wiser than the Europeans who saw democracy yield to fascism, Nazism, or communism. Our one advantage is that we might learn from their experience.
MIRACLE books
Fortune Smiles
Adam Johnson It is a 2015 collection of short stories by American author and novelist Adam Johnson. It is Johnson’s second published short story collection that will worm into your mind and ruin your balance for a few days. All the stories are caste in an unsettling twilight of moral struggle, and each one is a miniature demonstration of its own kind. The book showcases different strata and the overall aspects of each of it respectively. And it is no less than a full fledged descriptive yet informative diary that will grab your interest till the end years old.
Stamped from the Beginning The definitive history of racist ideas in America Ibram X Kendi
The book compiles an accomplished history of racist thoughts and practice in the United States from the Puritans to the present. It provides a solid framework for understanding he interplay between racist ideas, anti-racism, and the attempts to synthesize them- ‘assimilation”, which the author ultimately identifies as a simply other form of racism, even when advocated by African- Americans. The book by Ibram X Kendi has won the National Book Award for Fiction thereby highlighting the grave situation of racism.
The Underground Railroad Calson Whitehead
It is the sixth novel by American author Calson Whitehead and is one of the most loved books by the readers. It narrates a story of Cora and Caesar, two slaves who make a bid for freedom from their Georgia plantations by following the Underground Railroad, which in the novel is an actual subway as opposed to a series of safe houses and secret routes. The novel presents a plethora of commentary on both the past and present of the United States. It is a journey of two slaves to drive out from the maze of abject slavery and misery. It depicts about the abolitionists, both black and white, free and enslaved, who aided the fugitives.
The performance of Becoming Human Daniel Borzutzky
In Daniel Borzutzky’s The Performance of Becoming Human, the surreal and absurd come together to show that we are living in the apocalyptic future which we once feared. The work is as personally conflicted as Berryman’s, as stealthy as Celan’s and as openly political as Ginsberg’s. The book adds an additional chapter to growing and important compendium of work that asks what it means to be a both a patriotic and a globalized subject whose body is “shared between the earth, the state and the bank”. Through repetition and obsessive accumulation, every phrase leaps off the page, begging to be spoken aloud or shouted.
