Originally from Gujarat, India, the clients wanted a large dwelling that would accommodate extended family visits, while incorporating elements of the rich traditions of their homeland. Drawing on Indian architectural precedents, such as stone domes, step-wells and temple towers, Lakeshore Residence blends subtle Indian influences with a clean, modern sensibility. The white stone that extends throughout the house is reminiscent of many of the great historical buildings of India. Mirรณ Rivera Architects responded with a composition that combines white stone with copper outside and wood inside. The starkness of the white stone is softened by the inclusion of warmer, more tactile accents of Makore and Pearwood throughout the house. The glass stairs and second-floor walkway tie the public and private spaces together in a contemporary material that allows light to penetrate the double-height space of the gallery.

An equally essential part of the project was the inclusion of water features. The architects started by incorporating views of the lake in nearly all of the interior and exterior spaces, and continued by bringing water into the property in the form of a 5,000-square-foot pond off the master bedroom and terrace. Water is also integrated into the entry sequence via a large reflecting pool that surrounds the foyer, office and ‘prayer room’, and cascades into a smaller reflecting pond and fountain that greets visitors. Miró Rivera Architects were involved in aesthetic choices at all levels – from the design of the home and spaces to the selection of the china patterns. The dining room features a custom dining table designed by the architects, while the central outdoor room includes a pair of custombuilt swings that allow residents to enjoy the expansive views of the lake. The bedroom’s built-in bed, nightstands and headboard were also custom-designed by the architects and are made of Pearwood.
