A Message from the Mayor Welcome to the Fall / Winter edition of the Leisure Guide for 2018. After many months of planning and training, the Parks, Recreation & Culture Department is currently in the process of rolling out new software at the Leisure Centre. We greatly appreciate everyone’s patience during this period of transition and look forward to being able to serve you with even more efficiency in the weeks and months to come. Along with the software conversion, a great deal of work has also been done on developing a new Parks, Recreation, Arts and Culture Master Plan, which is available on the District of Mission website. The Master Plan is the end result of extensive public engagement and will assist Council and staff in developing new

programs and identifying key infrastructure improvements over the next ten years. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who participated in the consultation process. Your comments and opinions are invaluable. In response to this public feedback, Council have approved over $850,000 in renovations and improvements to local parks including Blott, Kinsmen West, Centennial, Fenn, Heritage Park, Lightburn, Hatzic and Griner Park. These improvements will be carried out over the months to come. Please visit our website at mission.ca for more information on program and services offered through Parks, Recreation & Culture and connect with us on social media for updates and special announcements.

Social Development in Mission

Fostering community cooperation and positive change toward social issues and community development in Mission. A community does not develop itself, it takes dedicated and hardworking people to get involved, use their gifts and the hands, heart and head and build the community they want for themselves and others. Citizens engagement is crucial for eh continuation of the quality of life we enjoy in Mission.

Who's Involved? Social development in Mission encompasses a Social Development Manager, a volunteer based Community Wellness Committee, volunteer action groups ad related projects and events. Social development works with all levels of Government to Health Authority, non-profits & citizens to effect positive change. Everyone is needed and has something to contribute to creating safe and healthy space, community and connection.

Getting Ahead

Thanks to a grant from the BC government, Mission now has a new digital one-stop shop for volunteers called Volunteer Mission. It’s a connecting point for agencies seeking volunteer s and people wanting to contribute to their community. Volunteers in Mission mentor our Children, feed our hungry, comfort our lonely, beautify our green spaces and fund raise! Our volunteers are young, old, working, retires and from many walks of life. Think you for helping make Mission a desirable place to live. Check out Volunteer Mission at www.volunteermission.ca or follow us on Twitter or Facebook. You can also reach us at info@volunteermission.ca.

Bridges out of Poverty Inspired Community Program Getting Ahead is a 16 week course that empowers individuals living in poverty, to make the transition out of poverty by providing the language and the tools that individuals and communities need to address the multiple causes of poverty. The program will run from September 5 to December 19, 2018 with a cohort of 10 people. Participants will be compensated $25 per week. If you know someone who you think would benefit from the program, please call Jen Ortman at 604-820-1021.

44 Leisure Guide | fall 2018 + winter 2019

Mission Racers Speed Skating Club has a long history dating back over 40 years and was the home club for Olympic Speed Skater, Eden Donatelli Green. We skate Tuesday and Thursdays on the North Arena of Mission Leisure Centre. Kids can join to learn to skate on longer blades and with 2 hours of coached practice a week advance quickly to completing laps. As the club provides the skates, equipment needed is minimal; a helmet, shin and knee pads, neck guard and gloves making it an affordable sport for all. Skaters have the opportunity to compete at local meets with skaters of similar abilities. They can also strive to compete at BC Winter Games, Provincials and Western Canadian Championships.
