A Message from the Mayor Welcome to the Spring/Summer 2019 edition of the Leisure Guide. When you visit the Leisure Centre look for the True Sport banners in the building. Mission is part of the True Sport movement. Together we’re working on building a sport community based on the pillars of Respect, Fun, Inclusiveness, Fair Play, Staying Healthy and Giving Back. I encourage you and your friends and family to consider these goals whenever you’re out and getting active in our community. I am happy to report that the recent improvements at Griner, Heritage, Centennial, Hatzic, Kinsmen East and West, Blott and Fenn Parks are almost

ON THE FRASER

complete and ready for the community to enjoy. I also want to invite you to join me for a walk about Mission. Throughout 2019, Fitness staff are leading a series of community walks. I will be taking part in a number of these walks and invite you to join me in walking Mission together. Please visit our website for more information on programs and services offered through Parks, Recreation & Culture and our community partners. You can also connect with us on social media for updates and special announcements. We look forward to another active year in 2019 and wish you all the very best in the year ahead.

The Water Spray Park located on the Mission Leisure Centre grounds opens the Victoria Day long weekend and operates 10am - 8pm each day until the Labour Day weekend. It is also open on weekends only in September (weather permitting).

Do you have the code? Make sure you can unlock the fun inside the Play Boxes located in Kinsmen West, Centennial, Lightburn and Fraser River Heritage Parks. The boxes are filled with play equipment that families can enjoy so they can play outside for free! Call the Leisure Centre at 604-820-5350 to register and learn more.

Lacrosse Box The Lacrosse Box located in Centennial Park is available for drop-in play year round. It is ideal for lacrosse, ball hockey and basketball. For rental opportunities contact the Booking Clerk at 604-820-5368.

Tennis Courts & Pickleball

Centennial Park & Hillside Park feature tennis courts available for use free of charge on a first come, first serve basis. The Centennial Park Courts are reserved for the Mission Tennis Club from May Sep on Tuesday & Thursday evenings and Sunday mornings. Pickleball lines are on the Hillside Courts making them the ideal location for Pickleball games.

Since its inception in 1993, this community organic garden has been operated by numerous volunteers providing many with an opportunity for hands on participation in community gardening. The garden is located just above the Skate Park north of the Leisure Centre. The Garden is managed & maintained by the L.I.N.C. Society which donates a portion of the vegetables grown to the local food bank and food centre. Visitors are welcome. Contact Sherry or Glenn at 604-820-1015 or seflett@telus.net for info.

The Parks, Recreation & Culture department has worked in partnership with the Fraser Valley Disc Golf Club to set up the course which is open to play year round in the park. Access to the course is free and discs are available for purchase at the Leisure Centre.

Parks Gift Program

A Parks Gift Program has been developed to allow citizens, community groups & businesses to donate trees, benches & picnic tables to the District of Mission for the enhancement of public parks. Commemorative plaques are included with bench & table donations making it a great way to recognize or memorialize someone special. An information flyer & application form available on-line at mission.ca/leisure.

Mission is Bear Country

Respect all bears. They are fast and can climb. They will aggressively defend their food & young. Never surprise, approach or attempt to feed a bear. Make your presence known by talking loudly, clapping or occasionally calling out. Keep children & pets close at all times.

Grapevine Food Sharing Neighbourliness Powered by Technology. Everyday in our community many people go hungry. At the same time many businesses and neighbours end up throwing away tonnes of useable food. We have the food and we have the helpers, we just need a way to connect these resources with people in need. Fortunately, Grapevine Food Sharing app and website is enabling us to connect resources to those in need.

Social Development in Mission

Fostering community cooperation and positive change toward social issues and community development in Mission. A community does not develop itself, it takes dedicated and hardworking people to get involved, use their gifts of the hands, heart and head and build the community they want for themselves and others. Citizen engagement is crucial for the continuation of the quality of life we enjoy in Mission.

Who's Involved? Social Development in Mission encompasses a Social Development Manager, a volunteer based Community Wellness Committee, volunteer action groups ad related projects and events. Social Development works with all levels of Government, the Health Authority, nonprofits & citizens to effect positive change. There is no one who is not needed. Every one has something to contribute in creating safe and healthy spaces, community and connection.

Projects and initiatives

Leisure Access

¥¥ Getting Ahead Groups & Collaborative Practices Grapevine Food Sharing is a free online hub that connects individual neighbours and small businesses that want to donate excess food and resources to those who want and need it. Grapevine is designed to help share:

¥¥ Food of all kinds, in large and small amounts ¥¥ Hot meals; social events and fundraisers ¥¥ Non-food groceries such as baby supplies, storage containers, cleaning and hygiene items ¥¥ Cash donations ¥¥ Food vouchers and coupons ¥¥ Volunteer time ¥¥ Gleaning of fruit or vegetables from local gardens and farms

¥¥ Stone Soup Initiative ¥¥ Provincial Houselessness Awareness Week ¥¥ Pulling Together Conference ¥¥ Connect Events (twice annually) ¥¥ Community Dialogues and Rental Cafe's ¥¥ Engaged Community Guides ¥¥ Extreme Weather Beds

Building Resilience in Kids through ACES & NEAR Science (Neuroscience, Epigenetics, Adverse Childhood Experiences and Resilience) We are living in times of paramount stress for individuals, families, schools and communities. The ACES study, or Adverse Childhood Experiences Study, recognizes how high levels of continuous chronic stress has serious impact on children’s development and community health.

There are many ways to use the app. Users can ask for personalized notifications based on their interests and can even ask for SMS text messages if they don’t have a data plan. Keep up to date with the app and stay current with local listings.

Mission is on a mission to build a community that recognizes and responds to the affects of chronic stress. Various sectors, including police, healthcare, and schools, are working together to forge relationships with children and youth in the community who are struggling. Through learning to identify the stressors and approach those in need with compassion, the community is contributing to a sense of hope and thus building resilience.

Try it for FREE today at grapevinefoodsharing.com!

Community Club Profile Mission Friends of the Library The original Friends of the Library branch for Mission was formed in 1991 by local residents with the purposes of supporting the Mission Library services, fundraising, and stimulating public interest in our library. Presently, our twenty members host two book sales a year plus Quiz Night in October. They fund and assist Riot of Reading, Summer Reading Club and other library programs. Over the years monies raised have purchased many books, soft furnishings, electronic equipment, tables, chairs and bookshelves for the Mission Library. Recently a large, colourful, circular rug for story time was purchased for preschoolers. In 2018 the Friends of the Library were honoured to receive a Group Award at the Celebration of the Arts Awards in recognition of their contributions to the Mission Library. Friends of the Library meet at the library on the second Wednesday of each month at 2:00pm. New members and visitors are always welcomed to the group.
