Social Development in Mission In 2006, District Council prioritized the creation of a Social Development Plan. This decision was in part, a response to social concerns in Mission. Community wide forums were held to identify priorities, resulting in the first Social Development Plan (2008) and related action groups. Social Development in Mission encompasses a Social Development Manager, a volunteer based Community Wellness Committee, volunteer action groups and related projects and events. A community does not develop itself, it takes dedicated and hardworking people to get involved, use their gifts of the hands, heart and head and build the community they want for themselves and others. Citizen engagement is crucial for the continuation of the quality of life we enjoy in Mission. There is no one who is not needed, everyone has something to contribute no matter how difficult it may be to see. We all want the same things, safe and healthy spaces, community and connection.

We Love Volunteers! Historically, volunteerism in Canada has been a strongly held value. Many community programs and services are maintained only through the tireless efforts of volunteers. The aging of the volunteer sector along with a slow decline in volunteerism across Canada is a concerning trend for all communities. An actively engaged volunteer core is critical for the human service component of community. Check out the new volunteer site www.volunteermission.ca to be part of Mission's volunteer movement.

Thanks to a grant from the BC government, Mission now has a new digital one-stop-shop for volunteers called Volunteer Mission. It’s a connecting point for agencies seeking volunteer s and people wanting to contribute to their community. It’s also a great place for businesses and community partners who want to make a difference by promoting volunteerism in Mission. An easy and efficient way for people to contribute their time, energy and talent, Volunteer Mission’s partner agencies include groups that support children, youth, seniors, people struggling with poverty, immigrants and even animals, just to name a few. You can help out a few hours a week or come out once in awhile to help with festivals, sports or community events. You can tailor your volunteer experience to your own particular skills, schedule and interests. Volunteer Mission is constantly adding new partners. There’s a way for everyone to help.

Leisure Access

In 2014, a community movement was born called "Stone Soup" in response to homelessness and housing concerns in the Fraser Valley. Community connection points contribute to building the social fabric or social capital of a community for all people. If everyone contributes just a little, we can create community that serves us all www.facebook.com/Missionstonesoup/

Build. Inspire. Connect. Volunteer Mission.

Signing up with Volunteer Mission costs nothing and you get free training and a free Criminal Record Check for you. We’ll connect you with local opportunities through email and a digital newsletter. Our aim is to create real leadership within our community. An example of this is our exciting Stone Soup program called Engaged Community Guides (ECGs). Our ECGs are a special crew of volunteers trained to greet and guide visitors in our Downtown and Mission Hills neighbourhoods. They share two vital characteristics; they have firsthand experience of living through adversity and they have a passion for helping others. The ECGs are living proof that everyone has something to give. Trained and outfitted by Volunteer Mission, you’ll see them on the street in their distinctive blue jackets. Give them a wave and say thanks for all the work they do! Check out Volunteer Mission at www.volunteermission.ca or follow us on Twitter or Facebook. You can also reach us at info@volunteermission.ca.
