Mission focusses on downtown plan BY TIM FITZGERALD Mission Record
Mission council is tackling major development projects one at a time. Council is holding off a workshop aimed at establishing planning, design, amenities, and seeking public input until after the issue of rejuvenating the health of the downtown core is addressed. The request to hold a high-level visioning workshop was brought forward by Patrick Cotter of Cotter Architects, the company leading the four-phase plan, to help get investment flowing along the banks of the Fraser. Funding for the workshop would use the remaining $10,000 left in the city’s original $30,000 budget for the four-phase study. “I think we would all like to see how to activate the waterfront and I really think these recommendations really spell out a framework of how staff and council could proceed to do that,” said Cotter. However, council decided to hold off. “I have some concerns right now that we’re dealing with a lot on our plate, particularly with the downtown issue, “ said Councillor Larry Nundal. “I don’t want to see too much distraction with the downtown.” Coun. Jenny Stevens said she’s
reluctant to get too deeply involved in two major planning documents, fearing neither project will get the attention it needs. “I’d rather have the time, frankly, to digest this report, fully, and relate it to what happens downtown,” said Stevens. District staff have been instructed to study Cotter’s report, which includes other suggestions, such as conceptual plans for realigning the highway bypass through the waterfront, and bring recommendations to council. For now, council says downtown is the first priority. The district’s goal of revitalizing the downtown is, in parts, in the hands of HB Lanarc Consultants. The firm is putting together a downtown revitalization plan, and hopes to present a report by March 31. Before that happens, the district is gathering as much information as possible, and is hosting an open house tonight (Jan. 17) from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Leisure Centre gym. Charette team members and consultants will be available to discuss the project and answer any questions. This is the public’s opportunity to fill out questionnaires and provide comments, said Sharon Fletcher, director of long range planning and special projects.

New score clock for arena Life just got a little sweeter for the Mission Leisure Centre. The facility received a $20,000 grant from Mars Canada Inc. that will be used to upgrade the aging south arena’s score board and clock. The donation comes just in time for Mission as it prepares to host the 2014 B.C. Winter Games. The contribution from the candy bar maker came after Mars launched its Play Your Part campaign in September. Using a pin code inside the wrapper, people could log on to the candy company’s website and Mars would make a $5 donation to help fund the campaign. Mission was one of five arenas across Canada to receive the funding. Mission Leisure Centre staff were told over the Christmas holidays they would be getting the $20,000. Kerry Bysouth, manager of parks and facilitates for the District of Mission, said the new clock will be a welcome addition to the rink. He said the old clock is approaching 20 years of service and is starting to show its age. “This will be a nice addition as we prepare to host the 2014 B.C. Winter Games,” said Bysouth. He said a new clock will run on LED technology and will be more cost efficient to run than the current clock which uses light bulbs. Bysouth noted facilities staff will be meeting with local minor hockey and lacrosse groups to get their input before a purchase is made. He said one of the considerations is whether the
new clock will be purchased from the same company that provided the clock for the north arena. It’s an issue of an ease of use standpoint for the groups who regularly need to use the scoreboard and shot clocks, he explained. The cost of a new clock, with instillation,
will run around $16,000. The remaining amount funds will be used to clean up the area around the old clock. Aziz Shariff, marketing manager of Mars Canada Inc, said the campaign is rooted in the fact that hockey is a major part of the daily lives of Canadians and the company wanted to find a
way to recognize that. “We are thrilled to see the response from Canadians in support of these community rinks,” said Shariff. “We’re committed to making a difference in these communities and we are proud that so many Canadians have stepped up with us to show their support and help unlock the funds.”

Provincial grant helps Mission establish senior centre Mission Record
The concept of a permanent senior centre facility in Mission took another step forward thanks to a $20,000 grant from the province. Mission was one of 27 communities across the province to receive grants to help create programs or tools that address the needs of their
older residents. The District of Mission made the application to the agefriendly planning and project grant program on behalf of the Mission Seniors Centre Association. Bob Ingram, president of the Mission Seniors Centre Association, said the grant will go a long way to helping them set up the framework to establish a permanent senior centre in Mission.
The money will be used to establish programs and procedures that need to be in place in order to make a permanent senior centre viable in the district, he added. “How we would manage a facility that operates seven days a week and all the costs that goes with that still need to be developed,” said Ingram. “You can’t do that with just volunteers.
We would need to find someone to manage the centre and coordinate the volunteers. It all takes time and expertise.” Currently the Mission Senior Centre is a shared facility, located at 33100 10 Ave. Ingram said the association is working closely with the district to establish an independent centre that will benefit the community. He said with support, a
Couple wants land in ALR BY TIM FITZGERALD Mission Record
Not everyone wants to develop their farmland into subdivisions. Elaine Hall and Phillip Northrop of Wilson Street in Mission have asked council to endorse their application to have a six-plus acre piece of land placed into the Agricultural Land Reserve. The owners of the property want to ensure their hobby farm is protected, according to a staff report. Councillor Jenny Stevens said she was pleased to see land going the other way when it comes to ALR property. “We have a person here who obviously loves the land he lives on and wants to protect it,” said Stevens. “I welcome this move. It’s so nice. So often we see it in reverse.” While land does still go into the ALR, it’s usually on a land-swapping agreement, noted Coun. Tony Luck. While that option was conveyed to the property owners, Barclay Pitkethly, the district’s deputy director of development services, said it wasn’t the owners’ intention. They simply wanted
to protect what they have, added Pitkethly. “It’s the type of application you might receive
once in a career.” He said the final decision will rest with the Agricultural Land Com-
mission, but it first must be endorsed by council. Council was unanimous in its support.

successful senior centre can be a selling point for Mission. Ingram added as the community continues to grow and new development transforms the district, the needs of the community’s seniors are going to grow as well. “They are the ones who helped build our
communities and got us to where we are today. They still have so much to contribute and give back. A strong senior’s community is an incredible asset,” he said. The age-friendly planning and project grant program is a partnership between the government of B.C. and the Union
of British Columbia Municipalities. Grants of up to $20,000 are provided through UBCM to help establish, or continue, a variety of projects that support healthy, active seniors. Since 2007, 117 B.C. communities have received funding to support age-friendly projects.

The need to limit omnibus bills
If the federal Conservative government hasn’t already thought about its penchant for omnibus bills in Parliament, it needs to. The Idle No More movement has focused some of its attention on changes to federal legislation like the Navigable Waters Protection Act and Environmental Assessment Act, which are rolled into an omnibus bill. These bills, often part of a budget, give MPs little chance to debate important issues because there are so many items jammed together. The Conservatives did not invent this strategy, but they have honed it to a fine art. Omnibus bills began appearing regularly during the five years the Conservatives governed with a minority, and were often crafted in such a way as to keep at least one opposition party from voting against the government. While this was an understandable legislative strategy, the need for such omnibus bills does not exist when there is a majority government. But the government of Prime Minister Stephen Harper likes the approach, because it limits the usefulness of Parliament and the ability of its critics to draw much public attention. That worked fine when the critics were solely from the opposition parties. But when they are from outside Parliament and are energized by a variety of causes, as is Idle No More, omnibus bills have the potential to do a great deal of harm. The harm comes from emasculating legitimate opposition in Parliament, where differences within a democracy need to be discussed. If too many people believe Parliament doesn’t work any more, and this leads them to do serious damage to Canada’s economy because of their frustrations, omnibus bills become very dangerous. The Conservative government has nothing to fear from its opponents in Parliament. It has a majority, and it should be ready and willing to hear criticism of its plans within an elected assembly. The prime minister would serve the interests of all Canadians if he pledged to restrict or even eliminate omnibus bills for the remainder of this Parliament’s term. Idle No More may be a loose and disorganized movement, but it has the potential to serve as a force for either positive or negative change. The federal government needs to choose a path which is working towards positive change — on all types of issues. Langley Times

The inconvenient truth A
study of six northern Alberta lakes conducted by Environment Canada and other scientists was published last week, generating headlines around the world. “Oil sands toxins ‘accumulate in freshwater systems,’” the BBC announced. The headline in The New York Times declared: “Oil sands industry in Canada tied to higher carcinogen level.” The study was reported with similar alarm across Canada. It looked at levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) in lakebed sediment, and found levels measurably higher than natural sources since oil sands extraction began 50 years ago. Most news reports I saw made little or no effort to put this information into context, in terms of the actual risk to humans, fish and other organisms. Some quoted people they knew would scream bloody murder, because as we in the media are taught, conflict and fear attract an audience. As expected, U.S. environmental groups and their Canadian branch offices ramped
Q
up the rhetoric to battle their favourite villain. At least one major Canadian newspaper, The Globe and Mail, did a responsible job. Its report on the study stated “PAH pollution level remains low – on par, at worst, with an urban lake – but is rising.” In fact, five of six lakes tested were far below average contamination of urban lakes. PAH fallout is a daily constant of urban life, from vehicles, industry, and particularly where coal is burned for electricity. To be clear, there To are dozens of different forms of PAH. Some have been shown to increase cancer risk, and some have been linked to (but not proven to cause) infertility, immune disorders and fish mutations. So when you drive your kids to school, stand at the bus stop, or drink a glass of water from Coquitlam Lake or any urban reservoir, you are exposed to PAH pollu-
tion from human and natural sources. The risk from this is an ongoing focus of research, but this study confirms one thing: your exposure is likely greater in any urban area than it is downwind of the Alberta oil sands. I argued this point with B.C.’s celebrity environmentalist Tzeporah Berman, who has shuttled back and forth from ForestEthics to Greenpeace in recent years. She took to her Facebook page to publicize a dramatic call to action from 350.org, one of the most strim dent climate change advocacy groups in the U.S., selectively using a quote and picture from The New York Times. Our debate turned to greenhouse gas emissions. I argued that this PAH study mirrors the true picture of carbon dioxide emissions, which is that nearly 70 per cent of CO2 from all petroleum comes when you burn the final product in engines and furnaces.
B.C. Views
Fletcher
uestion of the Week:
Are the Idle No More protests an effective way to achieve change?
In B.C., which doesn’t burn coal for electricity, fully 40 per cent of human-caused greenhouse gas emissions are from transportation. Other sources include home heating and industry. Berman insisted I was wrong, and claimed 70 per cent of Canada’s greenhouse gases come from “heavy industry.” I asked for her source. No response. A 2010 report by a Royal Society of Canada expert panel calculated that 27 per cent of our country’s fossil fuel emissions come from transportation. Another 16 per cent is from fuels burned for electricity. Five per cent is from oil sands operations. Berman’s figure is conveniently untrue. Greenpeace and the rest of the environmental scare industry want you to believe that stopping Alberta’s oil sands and pipelines would save the planet. Also wrong. It would drive oil demand from the U.S., Venezuela’s oil sands and elsewhere, with little net effect on the climate or pollution. tfletcher@blackpress.ca

YOUR VIEWS Fines must hit offenders deep in the pocketbook Editor, The Record: The letter “Write to council about cat problem” bears correction as it wrongly inflames pet owners and the public atlarge about irrational, anecdotal and perceived ignorant bias against cats. First, cats are perceived domesticated but are not classed as a domestic animal by law, thus, are not subject to being regulated, such as legal domesticated dogs. Cats are readily domesticated and most can remain indoors. Most do
not harm birds. All cats must be spayed, neutered, tattoo affixed but many irresponsible cat guardians place cats in harm’s way by permitting them outdoors and still observe the “its bed time, put the cat out” myth. Sadly, some become a meal for local coyotes, others roam neighbourhoods hoping for a compassionate neighbour to feed or in some cases, take indoors. The major cause of our massive homeless and/ or over-populated cat
dilemma and most subsequent problems arising is the indifference and ignorance of mayor and council and of irre-

Animal shelter receives funds from ScotiaBank ScotiaBank employees Laura Bishop and Kathy Oystrick took advantage of their company’s generous matching funds initiative to help SAINTS (Senior Animals In Need Today Society). Both women, who are volunteers with the local animal organization, applied to head office for permission to hold a bake sale in the branch on First Avenue. Now in its fifth year, the annual bake sale, which draws contributors from the bank, customers and volunteers, raised $5,000 for SAINTS,
and when matched by ScotiaBank, the non-profit organization recently receive a $10,000 cheque to help with its operations. Another ScotiaBank incentive for employees is a program which encourages volunteerism. Employees, once they have documented a minimum of 50 volunteer hours in a calendar year, can apply for a $1,000 donation to the charity of their choice. Both Bishop and Oystrick, who volunteer many more hours a year, have made SAINTS their charity of choice.

Steelhead property owner Dean Hodgson is reviewing his options after the Mission council shot down his plans to develop 80 acres of land last week. Mayor Ted Adlem said he was disappointed the developer didn’t conduct an independent survey to see where Steelhead residents stood on the project, but Hodgson said the public needed more information before they couild proceed. “How could the Steelhead community vote on something they know nothing about?” asked Hodgson. He said a number of issues needed to be resolved before an independent survey could be completed. Hodgson said the designation and first reading as well as the recent launch of their website would help provide important details of the new proposal for the public. There is a feature on their site where people can communicate directly with him on the project. “Once informed, they’d be ready for a professional survey on the subject, which could have been ready for a public hearing.” On Jan. 7, Hodgson presented council with a plan to subdivide the property, located on Thomas Avenue and Cardinal Street into 31 lots. This request came after Hodgson had originally put forth a proposal for 65 lots on the property back in September of 2012. After a councilinitiated information meeting with Steelhead residents, Hodgson revamped his plans. This time he was looking to redesignate the land to rural residential from its current rural zoning. Under its current zoning, lots must be a minimum of four acres. If granted new zoning, lots must be at least 1.7 acres. Hodgson’s plan called for an average size of 2.56 acres. “We considered and did a cost analysis of a fouracre development and it simply isn’t financially viable,” said Hodgson. Hodgson said he’s baffled the plan was rejected considering he received first reading to a project more than twice the size less than four months ago.

Get involved with community: Hayden Swim star speaks at health fair BY CAROL AUN Mission Record
Just get out and play. That’s the message from Mission Olympian Brent Hayden at the annual Back to Health … For Good Fair on Saturday at the Leisure Centre. Hayden shared his experiences growing up and how important it was to try different sports. With his bronze medal from the 2012 Summer Olympics in hand, he told the audience he wasn’t always the best, and in fact, he didn’t show much promise in any activity he started in, including swimming. The international swimming star recalled one of his first meets in Langley where he was more interested in the fish painted on the bottom of the pool than he was in finishing the race. But it was the access to many different sports that has made him

the person he is today. Hayden credits his karate instructor, Tom McDonagh, for turning him around. “He taught me that if you want to be good at anything, you have to do it with heart,” said Hayden, who had to pause for a moment as he spoke about the late sensei. “Sure he taught me how to throw wicked punches, but he also taught be to be a man.” Hayden said he learns more about himself when he fails than when he wins, but despite the outcome, he makes many friends along the way. Regardless of where he is, Mission is where his heart is. “Mission will always be my home,” said Hayden, who now lives in Vancouver with his wife. He encouraged kids, adults and families to hit the trails in the countryside, and visit local parks to meet other families and embrace what community is all about.

Patient Testimonial
Ten years ago, I decided to have a dental implant rather than a bridge. Bridges can be hard to clean and can break down over time. I made an appointment with Dr. Lui and found the implant procedure virtually painless. My dental implant was problem free so, five years later, I had another implant placed by Dr. Lui. I have no discomfort, I can eat anything and the implants are easy to brush - just like normal teeth!

What Parents Need to Know
A helping hand
Dear Parents, The Foundation Skills Assessment (FSA), given to Grade 4 and 7 students, does not count towards your child’s marks. The results do not a ctively support your child’s learning. • FSA tests are expensive and waste money at a time when cuts are being made. • FSA tests do not help students learn or teachers teach. • FSA tests take valuable time away from more meaningful learning. • The data does not provide real help to students, parents, or schools. • The results are misused to rank schools and promote privatization. Teachers in Mission recommend that parents write a letter to your school principal requesting that your child be exempted from the FSA. To learn more about your child’s progress and the real assessments done in the classroom, talk to her or his teacher.

BY TIM FITZGERALD Mission Record
Mission coun. Jeff Jewell would like to see the district take greater control of how it spends money when it comes to the regional library board. Jewell said while he understands the district is part of the regional board and understands how decisions are made, he has concerns relating to the board’s finances. “Getting control of the cost side, this is what bothers me,” said Jewell, who had hoped to defer the district’s approval of the Fraser Valley Regional Library’s operating and services agreement last week in an effort to send the message that get-
ting the board’s finances in line and keeping costs down is a priority for Mission. While the library board did overhaul its funding formal in recent years to make it more equitable for communities to help keep costs in line, Jewell said he wants to see it go further. Last year, the District of Mission contributed slightly more than $1.2 million to cover FVRL costs for the year, a jump of 3.25 per cent from 2011. Jewell said he would like the district to decide what level of service the Mission Library can deliver to the community and make small cuts if need be. He said by not signing the agreement, it sends the mes-
sage of accountability to the board. “We’re signing a five year agreement here and they haven’t shown to me that we’re happy with another five years,” said Jewel. However, Coun. Jenny Stevens said there’s little option for Mission. She said without being part of the regional board, Mission would face a a scenario where “we would end up with a much smaller library at twice the cost.” Stevens, who sits as Mission’s representative to the library board, said she will express Jewell’s concerns when the board meets to ensure service levels and costs are kept under control. However, Stevens said as it stands, reducing costs will come at a price.

A plan to make the twinned Trans Mountain pipeline 20 per cent bigger than previously intended is under fire from critics. Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson said the “staggering” sevenfold increase in the number of oil tankers now heading through Vancouver harbour to load from Kinder Morgan’s Burnaby terminal heightens his city’s “serious concerns” about the risks to the local economy and environment from a worstcase oil spill. “Any serious spill would jeopardize tens of thousands of jobs and could leave taxpayers and businesses on the hook for billions of dollars in clean-up costs and losses,” he said. Kinder Morgan Canada president Ian Anderson said last week the larger expansion is viable because more oil firms have signed on as customers to ship oil sands crude for export and he did not rule out the possibility the project could get bigger still. The capacity of 890,000 barrels per day now proposed – up from 750,000 – would be nearly triple the original 60-year-old pipeline’s 300,000 barrel capacity, part of which goes to nearby refineries. The project is now forecast to bring up to 34 tankers a month, instead of 25 under the previous plan and about five a month now. “I think we’ll hit a million barrels before we get to the end of the year,” said Kennedy Stewart, NDP MP for BurnabyDouglas. Oil companies may want to book still more guaranteed space with Kinder Morgan’s pipeline through the Lower Mainland if they sense Enbridge’s Northern Gateway pipeline to Kitimat will be rejected
or face lengthy delays, Stewart said. He said larger volumes of oil flowing to Burnaby for export means a tightening choke point for marine shipping in Burrard Inlet because other vessels aren’t allowed to sail there when one of the tankers is on the move. The only other way to reduce the number of tankers visiting, he noted, would be if Port Metro Vancouver agrees to dredge the Second Narrows and authorize larger tankers than the ones that now load oil. So far Kinder Morgan reps have said that’s not their plan – oil would be carried out using the existing Aframax size tankers, which hold 650,000 barrels and can’t be fully loaded here because of draft limits in the channel. Stewart also thinks it possible that Kinder Morgan could propose a second terminal elsewhere in the region, such as Deltaport, although the company has denied that. Residents near the existing Trans Mountain pipeline right-of-way through the Fraser Valley, Surrey, Coquitlam and Burnaby won’t learn

20 The Mission Record Thursday, January 17, 2013
O F F I C E O F T H E M AY O R December 28, 2012 The Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, P.C., M.P. Health Canada Brooke Claxton Building, Tunney’s Pasture Postal Locator: 0906C Ottawa, Ontario K1A 0K9 Dear Minister Aglukkaq: The District of Mission is encouraged to learn of your government’s plans to repeal the Marihuana Medical Access Regulations and replace them with the Marihuana for Medical Purposes Regulations. The District will be providing comments as part of the public review process prior to the February 15, 2013, deadline. To the best of our knowledge and relative to the size of Mission in comparison with other municipalities, an exceptionally high number of Personal-use and Designated Person Production Licences for medical marihuana have been issued within the District of Mission. It is our understanding that inspections of the licensed premises are not being done by federal government staff. District of Mission fire and bylaw inspections regularly determine that the licensed premises are growing more plants than licensed and that the growing is being performed in a manner that poses a fire risk to the licence holder and neighbouring homes and businesses. Based on complaints from neighbours, it is also clear that marihuana being produced at these licensed premises is not being used for personal use in many cases. At their meeting on November 21, 2012, the Council of the District of Mission resolved to send a letter to the Minister of Health requesting that spot inspections be performed for premises that hold licences under the Marihuana Medical Access Regulations within Mission. The District was very surprised to learn that limited or no inspections are being done. The federal government must recognize that they have an obligation to inspect these premises to ensure that they are in compliance with their licence requirements and to pass on any obvious safety concerns to the local and provincial governments. The extensive lack of regard and abuse of the regulations makes a mockery of the federal government’s process but more importantly presents a safety risk to neighbouring residents and businesses as well as emergency response officials and is causing untold frustration and harm to our community. The District recognizes the validity of the use of medical marihuana in certain circumstances but certainly not with the associated risks that are present in our community today as a result of the complete disregard for the federal regulations and local and provincial building and electrical safety regulations. I do recognize that the proposed regulations will, to a large degree, address the District’s concerns, but these concerns will remain for at least another year. It is important to note that inspections will also be needed during the transition period should the new regulations be enacted to ensure that the previously licensed operations are fully decommissioned. We expect that many of the operations will continue as illegal operations and recommend that the RCMP be allocated additional time-durated resources to deal with the continuing illegal operations. In the interim, I implore you to please provide the necessary resources to carry out frequent and comprehensive inspections of the licensed premises. District staff would be willing to work collaboratively with Ministry staff to ensure that those who need marihuana for legitimate medical purposes can produce the required amounts while not putting the rest of the community at unnecessary risk. I would also like to add that many of these licensed premises are operating within commercial and industrial areas of Mission. While the District is taking action under its zoning bylaw, many medical marihuana license holders do not recognize the legitimate authority that the District has to regulate land use, i.e., where the licensed medical marihuana operations must operate in compliance with the zoning bylaw. It would be very helpful if the federal government would remind licence holders that they may be subject to other government regulations and that they must check with their local government prior to commencing operations to determine any additional applicable requirements. I would also like to point out that the demands for electricity from exceedingly large marihuana grow operations, some licensed and some not, have caused power outages that have left these legitimate businesses without the ability to function and meet their customers’ orders. In addition, the associated odour and safety concerns are affecting legitimate neighbouring commercial enterprises. Given Mission’s need to attract new legitimate commercial and industrial business, there is no desire on behalf of the Council of Mission to accommodate licensed medical marihuana grow operations within commercially or industrially zoned areas under the current regulations. I would be pleased to discuss these issues in more detail with you or your staff and invite you to come to Mission to speak to residents and business owners that are affected by the non-compliant licensed grow operations. I would appreciate a formal written response to this letter that I can share with Council and senior staff. Yours truly,
Ted Adlem MAYOR cc:
The Honourable Margaret MacDiarmid, Minister of Health Randy Kamp, M.P. Randy Hawes, M.L.A Marc Dalton, M.L.A

Luyken drains 20 as Cascades roll Mission’s Aieisha Luyken led the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades women’s basketball team to a pair of wins over the weekend and picked up athlete of the week honours for her efforts. The Cascades cruised to a resounding 74-50 thumping over the University of Alberta Pandas at the Envision Athletic Centre Saturday. She earned a game high 20 points w h i l e S a r a h Wierks added 18 points and six rebounds. Luyken Nicole Wierks of Chilliwack chipped in with 17 points and Courtney Bartel, also of Chilliwack, led all Cascades with eight rebounds, five steals and six assists. The win came on the heels of a 71-62 victory over the University of Saskatchewan Huskies Friday night. Luyken had a team high 22 points. The Cascades, Canada’s number one ranked team in the CIS top 10 poll, improved their Pacific Division leading record to 11-1, in Canada West. “Aieisha really had a great weekend for us and is poised to have a great second half,” said UFV head coach Al Tuchscherer. “She leads us in many ways that aren’t always evident on the score sheet. She’s the type of player that will do whatever is necessary for her team to have success. This weekend those needs were pretty evident in her resulting stat line,” The Cascades opened the contest against the Pandas by scoring the game’s first six points as they quickly opened a lead they would never relinquish. They led by five after the first quarter. In the second, UFV’s defense went to work holding the powerful Panda offense to 13 points while they built up an 11 point halftime lead. UFV shot 42 per cent in the half, while Alberta shot a paltry 25 per cent from the floor. In the second half, UFV showed why they are ranked number one in Canada, as they shut Alberta down holding them to 25 points in the half, while shooting a
remarkable 57 per cent, scoring 38 points to blow the game wide open and collect their 11th win of the year by 24 points. Tuchscherer said his team played their best game of the season, forcing Alberta to commit 17 turnovers.
“We talked about the importance of putting two solid performances together on back to back nights against quality opponents and I thought we did that this weekend. We can really build from these two wins”said Tuchscherer. presents:

A SUCCESSFUL PERSON There are many ways to identify or describe success. Some may measure success by accomplishments, status in life, or having reached some special goal. Quite often, a person who has great wealth or fame is thought to be successful. However, a person does not have to be famous or prosperous in order to be a success. The Bible tells us that a person who loves and puts his trust in God will be successful, and we will have success if we are careful to observe the decrees and laws that the Lord gave to Moses. All the great men and women in the Bible loved and trusted God and they had that seed of confidence for success. Success is usually measured over a period of time, and the way we handle our disappointments as well as our achievements helps us to mature and become more pleasing in God’s eyes. Ask the Lord to bless your plans, and you will be successful in carrying them out (Proverbs 16:3).

LOEWEN, Catherine (Tina) Catherine (Tina) Loewen, an Abbotsford resident since 1948, died peacefully at the Menno Hospital on Jan. 11, 2013. She had been a longtime member at Level Ground Mennonite Church (formerly West Abbotsford Church) and was for many years a familiar face in MCC volunteer activities.
Tina Loewen was born January 25, 1916, in the village of Pretoria, Orenburg, Russia. There she received her first two years of education, and in October, 1926, her family took advantage of an opportunity to emigrate to Canada. The family settled in Simons Valley, Alberta, where they farmed for twenty years. On her parents’ retirement in 1947, she and her parents moved to Abbotsford, settling on a 2 acre lot on Gladwin Rd, next to her brother Martin. Here she lived until the early 1970s, when she moved into an urban setting. Tina’s work life included employment with MEI, Lepp’s Trucking, Canadian Mennonite Bible College, and Bethel Bible School. Her adult life has been marked by a love for children’s ministry, both in her church, as well as in summer camps. In her retirement years, she found fulfillment in voluntary work in the community, which included crocheting blankets for MCC. Tina found enjoyment in a number of opportunities to travel internationally, to South America and to India, as well as across Canada. As she never married, she took a keen interest in the lives of her nephews and nieces, and was generous in support of those whose lives were directed to voluntary service. Tina was pre-deceased by her parents, Abraham J. and Maria (Eitzen) Loewen, two sisters, and nine brothers. She is survived by her youngest sister, Anna Barg, and many nephews and nieces. Tina had a simple but enduring faith that is best captured in a verse she claimed early in her life: “My God shall supply all your needs according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” A memorial service for Tina Loewen will take place at 2 pm on January 18, 2013, at Level Ground Mennonite Church, 31216 King Rd. Abbotsford. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to MCC BC. Online condolences to the family may be made at www.woodlawnfh-abbotsford.com
