ER saved, OR closing Fraser Health makes more cuts at Mission Memorial Hospital BY

CAROL AUN

Mission Record

The good news is the emergency department at Mission Memorial Hospital will remain open 24 hours a day. The bad news is the operating room at the hospital will be shut down. Fraser Health’s vice presidents of clinical operations, Barbara Korabek and Arden Krystal,

met with Mission council at Monday night’s regular meeting to discuss the changes. The closure came about after consultations with local government and Mission physicians. Currently one operating room is being used in Mission two days a week. It is the least busy surgical site out of all the operating rooms in the Fraser Health region, explained Korabek. About 500 surgeries were performed at MMH last year, and all were considered low acuity

elective day care cases. Some examples of the procedures performed there were arthroscopy (knee), carpal tunnel release and tonsillectomy. Most of the clients needing the surgery were not from Mission. Fraser Health first announced it was considering cutting the emergency department down to 15 hours a day, closing each night at 11 p.m. and routing ER calls to Abbotsford or Maple Ridge. THE MISSION RECORD – THURSDAY, JANUARY 7, 2010

‘At least I’m encouraged the ER will not close’ From HOSPITAL Page 1 That plan met with stiff opposition from members of the community and hospital staff, with public demonstrations. All the surgeries will be rescheduled before the the OR will be closed in early February. Although the OR will be closed, the space will not be used for a new purpose. Mission’s facility will still be considered part of the Fraser Health surgical program, and could re-open at a future time, added Korabek. The closure will save the health authority a little over $350,000, similar to what reducing the hours at the ER would have saved. When the health authority was challenged with making cuts last year, many options were considered, including closing the OR, said Krystal. But the FHA originally presented a downgraded ER because there were already a significant number of surgeries being reduced and “we were trying to balance it.” In a perfect world, there wouldn’t be any cuts, said Mission Mayor James Atebe, who was satisfied a consultative process had taken place. “At least I’m encouraged The proposed closure of the Mission Memorial Hospital ER during evenings created a public backlash that included the ER will not close (evepeople marching with placards. Fraser Health responded by cutting the operating room instead.

nings),” he said. “But I also hope, through the planning process, we will improve (health) services, not reduce them.” Councillor Jenny Stevens agreed the OR closure will have less of an impact on local residents. NDP health critic Adrian Dix was at the council meeting, and recalled how hard hundreds of Mission residents fought to keep the ER open 24 hours a day. He called the announcement “an incremental process of dismantling” the hospital. The public has fought off the ER closure, but it’s only a temporary victory at the cost of another service, he added. “We’re only going in one direction,” he said after the meeting. There were only 500 surgeries done in Mission last year because of previous cuts, he pointed out. This hospital has gone from acute to subacute and has had closures of beds, closure of the intensive care unit, the maternity ward and now the OR. “This is another significant cut,” said Dix. “The impact on the community will be significant.”

Signs are being posted at borders and across the province to remind drivers and visitors who behind the wheel that talking on handheld devices is prohibited. Phone-addicted motorists who want to legally talk and drive are switching in droves to Bluetooth handsfree technology in response to B.C.’s new ban on handheld calls. The gadgetry wirelessly connects the phone to an earpiece or the car’s speakers and a microphone, allowing drivers to listen and talk without handling the phone. B.C.’s new distracted driving law took effect Jan. 1 – although police won’t start issuing $167 fines for illegally talking or texting until Feb. 1. Mission RCMP Insp. Pat Walsh says his officers will be setting up check points throughout the month to educate driers about the ban, why it exists and its consequences. We want to make sure everyone knows about it and will be distributing information about it, said Walsh. “In February we will enforce it.” Cell phones and similar devices “pose a significant distraction to drivers, and any distractions that take away from the primary task (driving)... is inherently dangerous.”

All local police vehicles have been outfitted with hands-free devices, according to Walsh, who wants his department to set the right example. There are exemptions for police who are known to multi-task in the front seat, but the inspector only wants his members to use the exemptions in dire circumstances. “We want to make sure they’re as safe as possible.” Mobile phone retailer Saqib Riaz said sales of handsfree earpieces and kits have more than doubled in recent weeks as drivers prepare to change their habits. “The Bluetooth sales are just skyrocketing right now,” said Riaz, adding his One Touch Wireless outlets in Surrey and Delta have run out of some models. A 2009 poll found 43 per cent of B.C. residents now use cellphones or other devices while driving. Two-thirds said they will stop using the devices to comply with the new law, 27 per cent said they’d go hands-free and the rest planned to keep talking or texting illegally. The rush to hands-free technology to comply with the law troubles the B.C. Automobile Association, which would prefer drivers instead practice cellphone abstinence. “We’re asking people to focus more on the act of driving,” spokesman Craig Amundsen said. “Too often people see it as downtime that they need to fill up.” While Bluetooth technology may keep drivers legal, he said it won’t necessarily make them safe, citing studies that show even hands-free phone use is dangerous. Driver distraction is blamed for a quarter of all crashes, accounting for 117 deaths a year in B.C. and 1,400 hospitalizations.

Thieves target vehicles at Sikh temples BY

ROCHELLE BAKER

Black Press

Police seek public assistance in identifying suspect(s) who have stolen valuables from vehicles outside Sikh temples in the Lower Mainland.

Police are looking to the public to help identify suspects that may be stealing valuables from cars at a number of Sikh temples throughout the Lower Mainland. The suspects seem to be targeting the South Asian community by breaking into vehicles outside Sikh temples, or gurdwaras, and South Asian markets, said Const. Ian MacDonald. “There appears to be only one incident in Abbotsford, but the investigator has tied (the crime) to other temples,” he said. The Abbotsford incident took place on Oct. 31 at the Sahib Kalgid-

har Darbar Gurdwara on Blueridge Drive at 12 p.m. A Honda CR-V parked outside the gurdwara was broken into and a purse was stolen. Shortly after, a credit card from the purse was used at an Abbotsford electronics store to purchase a $3,000 television. The images of two men suspected of committing the theft were captured by video surveillance

outside the store seconds after the purchase. Investigators suspect the men, who aren’t believed to be from Abbotsford, could be responsible for at least six cases where credit cards were stolen from vehicles in Surrey, Langley, Delta, Richmond and Vancouver. The manner in which the crimes are committed suggest the robberies are not isolated incidents, but tied to some

level of organized crime, said MacDonald. Jit Singh Sidhu, president of the Blueridge gurdwarda, said the thieves likely think the temples are easy targets. People at the temples are more trusting, may not be as vigilant and may not lock up their cars, he said. Thieves may hope that victims are more vulnerable due to language issues. Of the two men caught

on video, one suspect is South Asian, 30 years old, with a medium build and black hair. The second man, also believed to be South Asian, is around 50 years old, heavy-set with black hair and wearing glasses. Anyone with information is asked to call Const. Maniwa at 604859-5225 or make an anonymous call to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222TIPS.

Losing our hospital a piece at a time

T

he slow and steady erosion of Mission Memorial Hospital continues. Some might consider the closure of the MMH operating room to be comparatively good news, considering it an alternative to closing the emergency ward evenings. But the loss of the OR is just the latest in a series of indignities inflicted on Mission health care by the Fraser Health Authority, and by extension Premier Gordon Campbell’s Liberal government. There was no New Year’s baby born in Mission this January 1, because the maternity ward has been closed. So has intensive care, there have been bed closures, and now the OR is gone. Mission is a fast-growing district, on the verge of a massive building boom as Genstar and the municipality have come to agreement on a development that will effectively double the size of the community. Mission will require more health services in the very near future, not less. In the bigger picture, there are waiting lists for surgeries in B.C. The province should be doing its best to provide more surgical services, not closing operating rooms. Fraser Health representatives, announcing the closure, pointed out that most of the users of the Mission OR were not from the community. Obviously people from Mission also get surgery in neighbouring cities. Any loss in this health care network must create more work and stress at other, already burdened sites. It is hard to imagine that savings will be realized without a loss of service and longer waiting lists for surgeries.

Big changes to map of B.C.

A

series of B.C. government land management deals with aboriginal people was announced just before Christmas, and quickly lost in the snow flurries and shopping mall traffic jams. One that got a bit of attention was Premier Gordon Campbell’s announcement that official maps will now use the term Haida Gwaii for the archipelago known as the Queen Charlotte Islands. I’ve been among those advocating this sensible, lowcost bit of diplomacy for at least a decade and it’s great to see it finally happen. This follows the recent adoption by the U.S. (and soon by Canada) of the name Salish Sea for the inland waTo ters now known as the Strait of Georgia, Strait of Juan de Fuca and Puget Sound. The explorer known as Juan de Fuca was actually a Greek pilot serving on a 16th-century Spanish ship who made a questionable claim to have been the first European to sail the strait. Even his true name is uncertain, but his Spanish nickname is still immortalized with a provincial park on Vancouver Island. Britain’s Queen Charlotte, wife of King George III, never visited Canada, much less Haida Gwaii. The strait at the

north end of Vancouver Island is still named for her; thus she avoids the dustbin of colonial history. Acceptance of the ancient Haida name ends decades of sovereignty and resource disputes over one of the world’s special places. It is the capstone of a complex land-use agreement born out of protests and legal challenges, which began with a unique, federal co-management agreement for Gwaii Haanas National Park in 1993. Now it’s Victoria taking the lead in a sweeping project to define aboriginal title over the vast area of B.C. where treaties were never completed. The Haida land-use agreement is one of a string of similar deals finalized in m December, with the Gitga’at and five other nations on the north-central coast, and with the Kwakiutl and five more nations on the south-central coast, extending from Parksville to Port Hardy and the adjacent mainland. (Ottawa chipped in for a new ferry terminal at Klemtu.) Together those deals cover most of the B.C. coast, and that’s not all. B.C.’s last major announcement of 2009 concerned a series of land-management agreements with three of B.C.’s Treaty 8 groups: the Doig River, Prophet River

B.C. Views

Fletcher

and West Moberly First Nations. Treaty 8 was the last of Canada’s historic treaties, covering a vast swath of the Northwest Territories, Saskatchewan, Alberta and northeastern B.C. It was signed in 1899, and as such it didn’t contemplate the rich oil and gas resources that would come to define the regional economy. Energy development has emerged as the urgent reason to unravel the 150year tangle of aboriginal title in B.C. The unlocking of huge gas resources in northeastern B.C. shale, the continuing expansion of Alberta oil sands extraction, and the rise of China as a global power have made one thing clear: pipelines must be built across northern B.C.’s disputed territories if Canada is going to compete in the world economy. I asked Campbell about all this in a year-end interview. He shrugged off the rejection by chiefs of their leadership’s proposal to grant a form of aboriginal title across B.C. He insisted that closing the social and economic gaps between aboriginal and non-aboriginal people remains high on his government’s agenda. Campbell cautioned me not to draw conclusions about a lack of progress until 2009 was actually over. At that time, this flurry of agreements that reshape resource decision-making for about half of B.C. was about to be announced. tfletcher@blackpress.ca

Community came together to fight ER cutbacks Editor, The Record: From people expressing themselves in the coffee shops to those who took part in protests at the hospital, the ones that came together to fight the closure of our emergency room are owed a collective thanks. No kind words for politicians such as Mr. Hawes who never did understand that it wasn’t about politics and still believes that all the fuss was the fault of those dastardly NDP types. Whether he was being wilfully ignorant, or just reflecting the mindset

of Mr. Campbell, the familiar refrains from Mr. Hawes exposed his being as “thick as a brick“ on the issue. It was so positive to see how people right across the political spectrum came together to save the ER. But the loss of the OR shows that the fight for the hospital isn’t finished yet. Losing the OR will make it all the more difficult to attract new doctors to the area or to keep those doctors with current operating room privileges, to say nothing about

the loss of the staff and material assets supporting the OR. Nor should we forget the absolute disgrace when the maternity ward was stolen from our community: stolen, not moved. And if there’s a problem attracting specialists to our hospital, then pay them a bonus. After all, Mr. Campbell gave his friends in government huge bonuses under the pretext that you have to pay a premium to attract talent so surely health specialists should be treated

Editor, The Record: Over the past year the Cedar Valley Lions Club has been heavily involved in our community. We attended the fourth community service day, having kids and adults be sumo wrestlers. We lost count of how many people participated. We also brought in a top children’s entertainer for youngsters and their parents to enjoy at the Clarke Theatre. As well, we had a float in the Candlelight Parade. On the charity side, we held our third Oktoberfest, raising money to send a family to diabetic camp to learn more about the disease. Thanks to the 200 people who attended, we were able to achieve our goal. We have donated monies for our arts programs through the Leisure Centre, to help parents enroll kids in various programs that they might otherwise not be able to afford. We raised this money by having raffles, with the generosity of local people once again making this possible. The year ended with our sixth annual trip to Stanley Park, taking less fortunate families to the Christmas Train. It is an honour to volunteer as a Lion, and we would like to expand our membership. There are many misconceptions about volunteering that over the next month we wish to address. It is not for the old, as our youngest members is 10 years of age. It does not overtake your free time, as we ask only what you can give. In conclusion, we will be there to help those

Save tipping fees at Mission landfill drop-off. Please let scalehouse staff know what you’re bringing in, and you will be directed to the appropriate drop-off locations. Besides saving money, you’re also doing the right thing for the environment by separating your food waste. Organic materials that are buried in a landfill generate methane, a greenhouse gas 21 times stronger than carbon dioxide, which is a by-product of composting. For more information, visit www.mission.ca or call the Engineering Department at 604-8203736.

Rates on the rise at the landfill site Due to increased operating and monitoring costs, tipping fees at the Mission landfill will increase, effective Jan. 12, 2010. As such, the disposal rate for garbage will increase from $68/ tonne to $79/tonne, brush from $50/tonne to $55/tonne and gypsum board from $130/ tonne to $135/tonne. The minimum charge will remain at $5 per load. Please note that these increases still compare favourably to those in effect at other waste management facilities. Disposal fees for garbage at the Matsqui and Maple Ridge transfer stations are now $83.25/tonne and $86/tonne respectively. For more informa-

tion, please visit the District’s website at www.mission.ca, or phone the Engineering Department at 604820-3736.

When dropping off your garbage at the landfill, you can save money by separating your food waste. Waste audits continue to show that compostable materials, such as food waste and contaminated paper (food napkins, pizza boxes etc.) make up about half of the residential garbage stream by weight. Separated table scraps, such as meat, bones, bread, cheese, pasta, vegetable and fruit peelings, can be dropped off a the landfill for free. In order to qualify, all food waste must be received separately and must have all foreign material, such as plastic bags, removed upon

The use of bins for setting out garbage became mandatory June 1, 2009, in order to reduce litter on Mission’s streets. While it is not necessary to use garbage bags to contain materials inside bins, garbage should be at least contained in shopping bags and not be placed loosely in bins.

Bins may not exceed 80 litres in volume and must feature lids. Bins must be put out only on the day of collection by 8 a.m. Extra garbage featuring an extra-garbage sticker may still be set out in just a bag. Garbage not contained in bins or set out late may not be collected.

Flames burn Icebreakers The Mission Icebreakers dropped a 6-3 decision to the Ridge Meadows Flames on Sunday at the Leisure Centre. The Flames, a junior B powerhouse this year with a 22-10 record in the Pacific International Junior Hockey League, jumped out to a 4-1 lead after two periods. But it would be wrong to say they cruised to a win, as the Icebreakers kept battling through a fight-filled third period, and matched them 2-2 in scoring in the

final frame. Joel Venema, Spencer Doduk and Shahzil Jivani scored for Mission. Four players were assessed fighting majors and misconducts, as Nathan Law, Matt Keller, Brandon Regier and Nicolas Malinsky all dropped their gloves. Tonight the Icebreakers are in Richmond to take on the Sockeyes, and then on Sunday they will host the fish to a rematch back in Mission. The puck drops at 3:30 p.m.

Passing along your passion for fishing

I

would like to touch on the subject of passing your passion for sport fishing onto your children. I am always taken aback when I come across parents who put this simple act of spending quality time with their kids off. Some will say, their children are too young to grasp the skills needed, or that kids are too impatient. Others (I kid you not) have told me that children get in the way, and can compromise quality fishing time. What a shame! I personally have found that kids, particularly one’s own, can bring some of the greatest rewards in the sport fishing. My own daughters (permit me to

THE MISSION RECORD – THURSDAY, JANUARY 7, 2010

Mission property assessments drop The property assessments in Mission have dropped steeply this year. More than 185,000 property owners in the Fraser Valley can expect to receive their 2010 Assessment Notice in the coming days. “Most homes in the Fraser Valley area are worth slightly less on this year’s assessment roll than they were on the 2009 Assessment Roll” said Fraser Valley regional assessor, John Yannacopoulos in a press release. In Mission, the assessment of a single family dwelling dropped from $373,000 in 2009 to $344,000 for the 2010 assessment roll, for a decrease of 7.8 per cent. By comparison, Abbotsford assessments dropped 4.8 per cent to $396,000, and Maple Ridge dropped 3.5 per cent to $360,000. Mission apartments were down from $197,000 to $185,000, and townhouses from $258,000 to $242,000. Overall, the Fraser Valley’s assessment roll decreased from $74.2 billion last year to $73.6 billion this year. A total of $1.25 billion was added to the Assessment Roll throughout the Fraser Valley area as a result of subdivisions, rezoning and new construction. Assessments are the estimate of a property’s market value as of July 1, 2009. This common valuation date ensures that all properties are assessed fairly and there is an equitable base for property taxation, according to the assessment office. The real estate market creates property value, which is reported annually by BC Assessment. Local governments and other taxing authorities are responsible for property taxation, and after determining their own budget needs this spring, will determine their property tax rates based on BC Assessment’s data. Changes in property assessments are meant to be reflective of movement in the local real estate market and can vary greatly from property to property. When estimating a property’s market value, a professional appraiser analyzes current sales in the area, as well as considering other characteristics such as size, age, quality, condition, view and location. There has been a significant increase in the market value of commercial and light industrial

properties over the past few years, resulting generally in increased values for the 2010 roll. “Property owners who feel that their property assessment does not reflect market value as of July 1, 2009 or see incorrect in-

formation on their Notice, should contact the BC Assessment office indicated on their Notice as soon as possible in January,” said Yannacopoulos. BC Assessment provides an online service for property owners to

further assist them in understanding their property’s market value and to view comparable sales information. This service is accessible through BC Assessment’s website at www.bcassessment.ca by clicking on the e-valueBC

link. “If a property owner is still concerned about their assessment after speaking to one of our staff, they may submit a notice of complaint (an appeal) by Feb. 1, for an independent review by a property as-

sessment review panel,” he added. The panels, independent of BC Assessment, are appointed annually by the Ministry of Community and Rural Development, and meet between Feb. 2 and March 15 to

hear formal complaints. The Fraser Valley Assessment Office is located at Suite #240 – 31935 South Fraser Way in Abbotsford. During the month of January, office hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday.

Carly Rae coming home Not so long ago, before she hit it big on television, and before she toured the country with great rock bands, a young woman from Mission came to the big city and persuaded the manager of The Media Club to hire her as a bartender by bringing her guitar and singing him a song. Carly Rae Jepsen is one determined young woman. She knows what she wants and steadfastly makes it happen. Perhaps that is why Tug of War is the name of her 2008 debut album released by Fontana/MapleMusic. She is always having to fight against the temptation to tak the easy road, the less challenging path, and to keep her vision true.

Jepsen recently released “Sour Candy”, the fourth single and video from Tug of War, which features a duet with Josh Ramsay of Marianas Trench with whom she has just finished a national tour. The first single was “Sunshine On My Shoulders,” written by John Denver and the only cover song on the album, and was followed by “Tug of War” and “Bucket” which both charted in the Canadian Top 100. That’s a pretty good showing so far for a girl who became famous on the 2007 Canadian Idol television show doing cover songs ranging from Rickie Lee Jones to Queen to Ray Charles. She might not have won but she attracted a lot of attention for her live performances

on the Top Three national tour that followed the contest. Then she put out an album with nine self-written songs and it’s discovered that her song writing skills are as good as her singing. Rock.It Boy Entertainment is proud to present Mission singer/ songwriter Carly Rae Jepsen in two Vancouver-area concerts this month. Jepsen will be performing at the Media Club on Cambie Street in Vancouver on Jan. 20 at 8 p.m., and she will be home at the Clarke Theatre on Jan. 23 for a 7:30 p.m. show. Tickets are on sale now at all Tickmaster outlets for $15 (plus service charge), or $20 at the door. For more information visit www. rockitboy.com.

Opening Nite Theatre Society’s holiday show And Now for Something Completely Different will be closing on Jan. 10. There are just four performances left. Don’t miss out.

Only three more shows left Laughter is the best way to chase away the January blues, so don’t miss the final performances of And Now for Something Completely Different, ONTS Christmas Pantomime. Pantomimes are fun, family theatre with stories loosely based on children’s fairy tales. Pantos are suitable for adults too, as there is always plenty of slapstick comedy.

This pantomime incorporates many well known fairy tale characters in a uniquely different story. There are lots of laughs, music, and, of course, the panto horse makes for a delightful evening of family fun. And Now For Something Completely Different is written and directed by Camille Knight, with musical direction by Susan Dearing.

Opening Nite Theatre is located at 33227 N. Railway Ave. (opposite West Coast Express). There are four performances left. Matinees take place at 2 p.m. on Jan. 9 and Jan. 10, and evening performances are at 8 p.m. on Jan. 8 and Jan. 9. Tickets are available at Murdoch’s Book Shoppe or at the door.

Golden Idol contest set for Jan. 29 The third annual Golden Idol Talent contest will be taking place on Friday, Jan. 29 during the Friends of Mission Community Services Week.

All seniors, who are 60 years or older, are invited to register for the competition at Opening Nite Theatre, 33227 N. Railway Ave, just opposite the

West Coast Express, at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 9, Jan. 16 and Jan. 23. Please bring a CD of your music or your accompanist with you.

This will be a fun evening with proceeds going to Mission Community Services Seniors Connection. For more information call 604-820-8622.

Dance team taps to medals Group earns 3 golds, 2 silvers, 3 bronzes The Canadian National Tap Dance Team, which includes three Mission dancers, returned from the worlds in Reisa, Germany last month with eight medals. The team qualified for 13 categories, and made it to the finals in 11 after tapping through the opening round and the quarter finals. Mission’s Karly Ramadeen picked up a silver in the junior trio category with Abbotsford’s Tia Oostenbure and Langley’s Brittany Bosch for their performance of Chicago, and Jessica Shatzko and Tosh Sutherland earned a bronze in the adult small group category for their performance of Mr. Pin Stripe Suite, along with five other dancers. Sutherland also competed in the adult solo male category and finished fifth. The group also picked up medals in child solo female (gold), junior small group (gold), junior solo (gold), junior duo (silver), junior solo male (bronze) and adult small group (bronze). Twenty-eight dancers ranging in age from 10 to 19 made the trip to Germany in early December where they were considered by the European media as the tap nation, said Sandy Ramadeen, a parent who accompanied the group on the trip. Choreographer, Bonnie Jean Anderson, put together an amazing program, she noted, adding the students practice out of Abbotsford. About 25 countries, like Australia, England and Japan were in the competition, and all were amazing, Ramadeen added. The large group formation featured 20 dancers moving to Slumdog Millionaire’s Jai Ho. It was an incredible performance and there were hopes it would find a medal, but group placed sixth. Canada and performers from other countries which had a further distance to travel brought very little props with them for the show. But the costumes in Jai Ho were bold and colourful. The dancers were “flawless” and Ramadeen told The Record she was proud to be a Canadian that day. “I couldn’t take my eyes off the performance ... the show was impressive.” And it was a great experience for the kids, said Ramadeen who was in the audience waving flags of support for the team throughout the competition.

THE MISSION RECORD – THURSDAY, JANUARY 7, 2010

FRASER VALLEY OPTOMETRIC CENTER

LOOKING BACK/LOOKING FORWARD

The month of January is named after the two-faced Greek god Janus, a god who could simultaneously look backwards and forwards. Indeed, January is a month when many of us look back at the year that has just ended while looking forward to the year to come. But unlike Janus, we are unable to simultaneously look forward and backwards, and our memories are as poor as our foresight is shortsighted. Therefore, we would do well to consider what we have accomplished in the previous year, and then consider what we would like to accomplish in the year ahead. As the saying goes: If you don’t know where you are going, you will probably end up somewhere else. Unfortunately, most people resolve to work harder, to lose weight or to get in shape; all goals which are laudable but destined to mean very little in the grand scheme of things. Let me suggest that we think hardest about our resolve to be a better, kinder, more decent person. Surely, becoming a kinder, better, more decent person and having a closer relationship with God are more likely to have a greater effect on the people we come in contact with, and at the same time, these actions might just save our souls. So then, as we have the opportunity, let us do good to all men, And especially to those who are of the household of faith.
