ariety Children’s Charity has helped breathe new life into a Mission family struggling to cope with their newborn’s medical issues. Jamie and Pat Gauvin were blessed with twins last year, Annie on Jan. 26, and Allie a day later. But although Annie was healthy, Allie was born with Pierre Robin Sequence, a condition that typically affects breathing because of a malformation in her jaw. Born at Langley Hospital, Allie was transferred to BC Children’s Hospital, and then to Abbotsford Hospital, where she stayed for a month and a half. It was at two months old that the hospital decided she would need an oximeter, a special device to help the little girl breathe. The news took mother Jamie by surprise. “I’m kind of like, oh my gosh, how much is this going to cost?” So she called Variety asking for help and they obliged with $1,002.40. “It was tough times for

us, being on maternity leave, having twins, it just wasn’t affordable to have us purchase that right out of our pocket.” Although Allie was able to come home for a few weeks and be with the family, her overall condition was still troubling. They returned to Abbotsford Hospital, and were sent for a consultation at

Children’s where it was decided Allie would undergo surgery. She was released after 20 days and could breathe without the oximeter. Jamie was so grateful for the help the device provided that she decided to pay it forward. “When I was at Abbotsford Hospital I was speaking to the social worker and

we had decided to donate the oximeter back to the hospital for other families that can’t afford it.” Allie had surgery Jan. 5 for a cleft palate and has been perfectly healthy since. The Annual Variety Show of Hearts Telethon, which helps families like the Gauvins, takes place this year on Global BC TV on Feb.

11 and 12. The telethon features 23 hours of concerts and performances by worldrenowned entertainers as well as stories about other children in B.C. that have been helped by Variety. Show not always about ‘the stuff’ BY JASON ROESSLE Mission Record

C

limbing into a derelict ferry’s crow’s nest amid howling winds and freezing rain briefly flitted across Scott Cozens’ mind, but cowboy boots don’t exactly have the right amount of traction. Cozens and his partner Sheldon Smithens were in Mission Jan. 20 filming an upcoming episode of the popular History Channel television show, Canadian Pickers. The pair travel across the country, scouring old barns, houses and shops looking for antiques, collectibles and curiosities that they eventually turn around and sell to retailers. Now in its third season, the popular reality show has gained a solid following. The old BC Ferries ship, the Queen of Sidney, moored just off Cooper Avenue in Mission proved to be the first ferry the outgoing men had ever “picked.” “It was filled with vintage cars, trucks, forklifts and other stuff that was just rotting away,” said Cozens, sporting his distinctive cowboy hat, boots, and shoulder-length silver hair. “It was fun, though. Often it’s not always what we get, it’s about the visual.” Sometimes the most interesting part is who we’re buying from, said Smithens. The two are on the road filming about four

months each year, and the episode in Mission will be the second of the season, set to air later this year. Besides the daylong stop in Mission, the pickers also went to properties in New Westminster, Langley, Victoria and Nanaimo. This week they are in Ontario. The show is the only one of its type in the country, said Smithens, and said besides the interesting people and places, it’s the history behind the pieces they find that enthralls people. Each man is drawn to different items. Cozens loves pre-Second World War advertising and First Nations art, while Smithens likes anything that tells local history. Fans of the show will be pleased to hear that a number of the items the two purchased in seasons one and two will be sold in season three, as many avid viewers constantly ask what happens with the stuff they purchase. But it’s not always about the stuff; it’s the relationship between us and the people we meet, added Cozens, who during the off-season, works as a civil litigator in Calgary. The two have been friends for more than 20 years, and the chemistry between them is also a draw for viewers, especially since they spend hours together in their white van. “I’m just an incredibly patient individual,”

Scott Cozens (left) and Sheldon Smithens talk to Mission’s Bobby Tapp, who along with his brother, Gerald, showed the Canadian Pickers through their old BC Ferries ship. JASON ROESSLE PHOTO

quipped Smithens, adding, “we balance each other out.” “We both like wilderness and music and we have lots of commonality,” noted Cozens. But in the end it comes down to respect for each other, said

Smithens, and that they don’t take themselves too seriously, even though in Canadian terms, they’re approaching celebrity status. “With us, what you see on TV is what you get in real life,” said Cozens.

Fourth phase of waterfront study plan moved forward by council BY ADRIAN MACNAIR Mission Record

The final phase of the $411,000 waterfront feasibility study will go forward after council voted Monday to approve its $30,000 budget, with an amendment to consult with staff on particulars. The vote followed a Jan. 11 presentation by study consultant Patrick Cotter. Coun. Nelson Tilbury said he was disappointed by what he heard, saying there doesn’t appear to be much profit to be made for investors. “I’d like something to be salvaged from the four hundred some odd thousand dollars we’ve spent here,” he said. Tilbury said Tuesday he was initially hopeful about the waterfront

plan but it seemed like the consultant was only telling council what they wanted to hear. “Ted [Adlem] was right when he said it was a concept car,” he said, adding there’s no realistic chance of actually developing the waterfront in the scale and size planned within the next 40 to 50 years. What they’re trying to do down there is bigger than Expo 86, and bigger than False Creek, he said. The councillor also said the waterfront hasn’t changed in the 38 years since he moved away and returned to the district, and the plan doesn’t address that. Former councillor Mike Scudder praised council during question period Monday for approving the last phase, saying he expected them to defer the study.

Reached by telephone Tuesday, Scudder said the waterfront plan can be profitable, and that the consultant’s estimates of an 18 to 22 per cent return on investment will attract investors. Without finishing the study the district can’t determine what the market pressure would be “in order to make the determination of whether a developer could make a profit or not,” he said. Phase four of the waterfront plan is expected to take the cumulative findings of the previous phases and provide council with a final report on implementation. Developing 150 acres along Mission’s floodplains is expected to require as much as $1.4 billion from investors, and significant municipal infrastructure upgrades.

Seniors’ group asks council for discount

Mission Leisure Centre Safeway Bark Avenue Styl’n Graphics Swing Optical White Spot Restaurant Mission Record

Council deferred deciding Monday night whether to reduce development cost charges by half for a planned seniors’ residence on Cedar Street. The Mission Association for Seniors’ Housing (MASH) led a delegation before council Feb. 6 requesting the drop in order to provide affordable housing for seniors. Currently, MASH is set to build a 42-unit facility at Cherry Avenue and Cedar Street called Cedar Valley Manor; DCCs will cost $550,494. Since MASH builds housing at-cost for seniors, this increases each unit’s price by $13,107.

MASH is proposing life-lease housing for tenants — a cross between owning and renting in which people buy their units and the leasehold interest is registered on the title — but the nonprofit organization will maintain ownership of the building. At the end of the lease, the owner retains 95 per cent of the equity on the unit. The group had asked the previous council in October to review how DCCs are levied by the district on new affordable housing. Council has taken steps to help MASH in the past, waiving the Community Amenity Contribution of $118,230 ($2,815 per

unit) last July, as it considered affordable housing a community service. But the new council wasn’t so sure that MASH’s life-leasing housing qualifies as affordable housing. Coun. Dave Hensman said since the units cost upwards of $199,000 up front, it can’t possibly qualify as low-income housing. He went on to suggest that another viable option would be to purchase housing in a seniors’ complex or other facility. But MASH president Judith Ray said that currently no low-income housing for seniors exists anywhere in Canada as that would require help from the provincial and

federal governments. She said the vast majority of seniors already own their homes, but are “house rich and cash poor,” which puts them in a position to sell their home and move into a life-lease unit. Hensman said the problem with reducing DCCs is that they pay for quality infrastructure that will be used by the development regardless of its purpose. Council voted to have staff come back with a report Feb. 20 that outlines the pros and cons of granting MASH’s request. The report will also look at what council has provided MASH in the past, and examine a potential permissive tax exemption.

Pleasant View needs more board directors Pleasant View Housing Society (PVHS) needs volunteer board directors. The non-profit group operates a 40-unit apartment for low-income seniors, meals on wheels, an adult day program and

a 76-bed residential nursing care home. Fraser Health Authority is building a new 200-bed facility alongside Mission Memorial Hospital and once open, PVHS will close, leaving

the building for another use. Directors attend an evening board meeting approximately nine times a year with two to three additional events, and with the pending transi-

tion there may be some committee work. If you would like to help, fax your resume and letter of interest by Feb. 15 to Annette Condon at 604-826-2024 or e-mail to applyto@PVHS.ca.

Two men sentenced in fraud scheme False companies claimed $23 million in GST refunds BY VIKKI HOPES Black Press

An Abbotsford man who pleaded guilty to being involved in a scheme in which $23 million was fraudulently claimed in GST refunds was sentenced Friday to two years less a day in prison. Paramjit Gill was initially charged with 20 counts of fraud and three counts of laundering the proceeds of crime. He pleaded guilty to three fraud offences, and the other charges were stayed in B.C. Supreme Court in New Westminster. Co-accused Manjit Khangura of Abbotsford and Sikander Bath of Mission went to trial on the same charges and were found guilty in December. Gill testified for the Crown at their trial, under a plea agreement. Khangura was convicted of three fraud charges, and Bath was found guilty of six. They are due to be sentenced at a later date and are next scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 28. The Crown alleged that Khangura and Bath created 20 false companies purporting to export lumber, shake and shingle products between 1994 and 1997 and fraudulently claimed GST refunds of between $400,000 and $2.4 million each. It was ruled that 13 of those companies were proved by the Crown to be shams, while there was not enough proof that the other seven were also false. Gill testified at the trial that he signed incorporation documents and opened bank accounts for three of the false companies — Meadow Forest Products Ltd., Terminal Shake Ltd. and West Bay Shake Ltd. — as well as conducted numerous banking transactions. In exchange, he received a percentage of the GST refunds, amounting to about $400,000. He testified he did not initially know the companies were false or that the money was being fraudulently claimed.

OPINION

Published and printed by Black Press Ltd. at Mission at 33047 First Ave., V2V 1G2

Energy issues still here In 2008, when B.C. introduced its carbon tax, it was widely hailed as a model of environmental and economic design. Applied to the purchase or use of fossil fuels within the province, the tax rates were initially set at $10 per tonne of CO2 (carbon dioxide) emissions, rising to $25 last July, and $30 per tonne this year. Motorists will be paying 6.67 cents of carbon tax per litre this summer. The province committed that the initiative would be revenue neutral, with the money generated returned to taxpayers and businesses by way of tax deductions. Stats Canada reports the consumption of gasoline in the province held relatively steady since 2008 and increased in 2010. In the global scheme of things, the impact of B.C.’s carbon tax on the release of greenhouse gases since its inception can be considered miniscule. But it has led to some positive changes in awareness and attitudes, with examples found in industry and civic infrastructure where energy-efficient measures and alternatives to fossil fuels were implemented. In fact, while opponents call for the demise of the carbon tax, calling it ineffective and unfair, proponents maintain it must continue to be ramped up to change bad energy habits. At present, the global consumption rate of oil is approximately 85 million barrels per day, and current trending sees that rising over 100 million barrels per day by 2020. If alternative energy sources are not vigorously pursued now, the world is headed for a worsening crisis. That makes for a strong argument that instead of carbon taxes being neutral, they should be funnelled directly into energy-wise initiatives, such as public transit and other transportation alternatives. - Nanaimo News Bulletin

B.C. joins the LNG gold rush T he first thing to understand about the race to liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports is how far back in the pack B.C. is starting. Canada has issued its first two export licenses for LNG export projects near Kitimat, to sell the product of the vast Horn River and Montney shale gas deposits in northeastern B.C. One LNG plant has begun construction, the second is approved to proceed and a third is also proposed for the same region. Unlike the proposed Northern Gateway oil pipeline proposal, plants and associated pipelines have actually received all the necessary permits from our constipated federal-provincial environmental process. Australia has approved six LNG projects in the last two years, with a combined construction cost of $180 billion. Reuters reports their $34 billion Ichthys project will vault Australia past the Middle Eastern kingdom of Qatar into first place among global LNG exporters, assuming it is built by 2017. Top producing countries are

Qatar, Indonesia, Malaysia, Nigeria and Algeria. The second thing B.C. taxpayers need to know is that there is no other practical choice here. Huge shale gas developments around North America have meant B.C.’s days of making a tidy sum selling gas to the U.S. are coming to an end. Natural gas replaced forest products some years ago as B.C.’s top commodity revenue stream, helping to keep the lights on in B.C. schools and hospitals. But the domestic price is down for the long term and the U.S. To has plenty of its own gas now. The third thing to know is that there is misinformation about shale gas and “fracking.” Shaky videos show someone touching a match to water that has had gas bubbled through it, to artificially promote the idea that hydraulic fracturing of shale deposits contaminates groundwater. This and some scientifically

illiterate media reports are all it takes to get a protest movement going these days. The fact that a kilometre or more of solid rock separates B.C. shale deposits from surface water sources is seldom mentioned. The major public health risk from B.C.’s natural gas boom is the escape of sour gas, which contains poisonous, heavierthan-air hydrogen sulfide. There are legitimate concerns about water use and chemical discharge from shale fracturing, and the B.C. government m has scrambled to upgrade its regulations on that as well as sour gas. Premier Christy Clark has run to the front of the LNG parade, trying to convey the notion that multi-billion-dollar investments made years ago by Chinese, Japanese, U.S. and Korean corporations are somehow the result of her “jobs plan.” NDP energy critic John

Horgan insists that the B.C. Utilities Commission oversee all this, so the B.C. Liberals don’t subsidize these giant transnational energy companies with cheap electricity and stick BC Hydro ratepayers with the bill. According to Horgan, the BCUC should also have lawyered away over the smart meter program for God knows how long, as analog meters become obsolete and Quebec and others modernize their electricity grids without hand-wringing or exploitation of imaginary health threats. This is not a good time to dither. An LNG terminal is proposed for Portland, Oregon and there will be others. LNG plants need lots of electricity, and the B.C. Liberal government wants to market B.C. LNG as the “cleanest” in the world because it’s processed with minimal burning of gas for power generation. West Coast Santa Trains serve Former those Mission residents in need trustees Editor, The Record: Re: Keep Shoppers here at Christmas, Jan. 5 edition. I would like to take this opportunity to explain, what these “free” trains accomplish for Mission residents, especially those in need. The West Coast Express Santa Trains provided items for over 700 Christmas hampers for families in need in Mission this year. Over the last 15 years, we have been able, thanks to Phil Hope and his team at the Mission Christmas Bureau, to consistently fill these hampers at Christmas. This is a charity event where people bring an unwrapped toy or cash donation in exchange for a return ticket on the West Coast Express. All the

donations collected in Mission stay in Mission. The Santa Trains have become a cherished tradition for many families, many of whom tell us that it is not the shopping, but the holiday experience that makes them come out each year. We provide free parking at our lots, for patrons of these very special trains, many of whom drive out to Mission from other areas to ensure a seat and get the full experience of the train. As a Mission resident myself, I always try to spend my money in Mission first and take full advantage of all the terrific shops and services. I do feel compelled to comment that although there are some great shops and services on First Avenue, there are

not enough shops to entail a full-day excursion. Over the past 10 years I have lived in Mission, many of my favourite local shops that made First Avenue a pleasure to stroll and shop have disappeared altogether or been replaced by yet another cheque cashing store. I would like to invite all Mission residents to come out and participate, either by riding the Santa Trains or volunteering at the station to make the experience special for everyone involved. See you next year! Carolyn Rice-Jones Mission Editor’s Note: Ms. Rice-Jones is employed by West Coast Express as a customer service representative.

Stewart voted against first, second readings Editor, The Record: Re: Meakin project passes third reading, Feb. 2 edition. During the Jan. 31 public hearing, development consultant Ron Taylor suggested, without reference to the previous council records, that I had voted in favour of McBarge’s coming to Mission. His memory of my voting is incorrect. Minutes of Sept. 7,

2010 record that I voted against approval of first and second reading — along with Jenny Stevens and Danny Plecas. My reasons are clear: The risks that come with the McBarge project are several, including environmental and financial. In addition, thousands of dollars have already been spent on thorough, wellconsidered downtown/waterfront

planning that makes sense for Mission in today’s economy. On the other hand, throwing out downtown/waterfront planning will be completely irresponsible. Surely the costly “core review” for which the current council is willing to spend at a cost of $70,000 to $100,000 will indicate that. Heather Stewart Mission

ask for apology Editor, The Record: The Mission School District and the Board of Education have always operated within the School Act. In the Jan. 26 Mission Record, board vice-chair Jim Taylor is quoted as saying that an amendment of bylaws “will ensure the board operates in line with the School Act,” which he states, “has not happened for several years.” As past Board of Education trustees we suggest that Trustee Taylor recant this statement. As well, a public apology from Trustee Taylor is in order. Pam Alexis, Cindy Miller, and Karen Petty Mission

Restorative Resolutions is the District of Mission’s restorative justice service that responds to incidents of harm, crime, or conflict. Every year at this time the volunteerdriven service is actively recruiting individuals to attend their highly acclaimed training and then serve the community by facilitating restorative responses for referrals from the RCMP, Crown Counsel, School District 75 and others. The training is scheduled with the working person in mind. Training takes place on Tuesday evenings from 6:30 till 9:30 and on some weekend days within the 13 week period starting March 6. A wide range of topics are covered including Communication, Ethics, Trauma, Victimization and Shame, Restorative Justice in Schools, Youth Criminal Justice Act, and a wide variety of restorative practices. The training is provided by a diverse group of experts including a retired judge, university professor, federal mediator, aboriginal elder, college educator, and others within the field of restorative justice. According to the manager of the service, Darryl Gehlen, “Yes, the training is very interesting and engaging. But it is far more than just the subject matter — we examine the very essence of human relationships,

something that is very closely tied to the meaning of justice, to the delivery of justice. “As a result, according to just about every graduate, the training is a transformational experience, one that empowers them in their personal and professional lives. I think it is fair to say it is an exploration, a journey, as much as it is a training. And so we’re not looking for academic excellence – there are no “tests”. What we are looking for is a passion for that exploration of human relationships, of justice, of what makes our community harmonious, and of course a willingness to serve.”

Most of us, on a regular basis, will take our vehicles to a local gas station to fill up, unaware of all the safety features that have been installed to minimize the risk of fire or explosion. Despite this, accidents or carelessness while fueling vehicles does result in fires. The B.C. Fire Code addresses many of the safety issues, but ultimately the customer is responsible for their own safety. Education and understanding are the best weapons in fire prevention. Here are some fire facts to think about the next time you are fueling your vehicle. The key to fire safety in gas stations is to eliminate all ignition sources. Do not smoke, not even inside the vehicle while fueling. Leave the ignition completely off, including the radio. Shut off cellphones and pagers and when filling containers,

make sure they are approved for use as a gas container. Fill them on the ground, not in the vehicle and not in the back of a pick up. Did you know that when gasoline is dispensed, it could create a static charge build up, especially when filling nonconductive containers made of plastic? This is why you should always place containers on the

ground when filling. This will eliminate the static safety issues. Just a few moments of forethought the next time you fuel your vehicle is a great investment in your family’s safety. For any fire safety questions you can contact Mission Fire/ Rescue Service at 604820-3794, or check the website at: www. mission.ca/fire.

More vaccine doses are being stockpiled in case an outbreak of whooping cough in the eastern Fraser Valley spreads further west. Hope, Agassiz and Chilliwack have so far seen most of the more than 100 confirmed local cases of pertussis, a highly contagious bacterial infection that causes adults to cough for months but can be deadly to babies. Fraser Health will acquire another 50,000 doses of vaccine by the second week of February in case public health officials decide to widen their immunization program, which has so far focused on the eastern Valley. “We’ve seen sporadic cases in Maple Ridge, in Langley and in Surrey, so we know there’s some disease out there,” Chief Medical Health Officer Dr. Paul Van Buynder. “If it’s necessary in the next week or two we will run a program for the whole of the Fraser Valley.” Pertussis, or whooping cough, is

considered more of an irritant for adults, but they act as carriers. Van Buynder said about half the very young children who contract pertussis are hospitalized and about one or two per cent of those die. Three-quarters of infants infected get it from parents or close family members. California had a huge outbreak in 2009 that claimed 10 children’s lives, five more died in Saskatchewan in 2010 and two more children died last year in Washington State, where authorities are still battling an outbreak. “This is a nasty disease and it’s back in the Fraser Valley after an absence of about eight years,” Van Buynder said. Part of the challenge is that health authorities no longer use an older, more powerful vaccine due to concern over its side effects. The weaker vaccine that replaced it provides immunity for only about four to 10 years, Van Buynder said. Fraser Health wants to immunize all adults in outbreak areas who have close contact with young

children, to prevent transmission to the most vulnerable. “We know that there are some parts of the Fraser Valley where there are groups of parents who don’t believe in the importance of immunization and they place the rest of the community at significant risk,” Van Buynder said. The new vaccine takes at least three doses to fully protect a child, he said, so Fraser Health is now vaccinating them earlier — as young as 14 weeks. Pregnant women are also being vaccinated, Van Buynder said, because it’s safe to use during pregnancy and immunity will extend to the newborn. Pertussis cases in the eastern Valley took off in midDecember in Hope and nearby First Nations reserves. “We’ve started to see the spread of it down the Fraser Valley moving westward,” Van Buynder said, adding the most recent cases have been in Chilliwack. Two children have been hospitalized so far and one infected several weeks ago is still fighting the disease in B.C. Children’s Hospital.

Province marks Queen’s 60 years BY TOM FLETCHER Black Press

Queen Elizabeth II’s personal Canadian flag is usually flown above the B.C. legislature only during her visits, a tradition that was added to Monday to mark her 60th year on the throne. The flag was raised at the legislature at sunrise, commemorating Feb. 6, 1952 when Elizabeth II began her reign after her father King George VI died. Elizabeth II is now the longest-serving British monarch after Queen Victoria. Premier Christy Clark issued

a statement congratulating the Queen on the occasion. “Her Majesty is no stranger to British Columbia,” Clark said. “She has visited more than a dozen cities, towns and communities during her four tours to our province, including in 1971 to mark the centennial anniversary of B.C. joining Confederation.” In Ottawa, Gov. Gen. David Johnston presented the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Medal to 60 Canadians for public service. B.C. recipients included: • Tomas Avendano of Vancouver for his work with new immigrants

• Barney Ellis-Perry of North Vancouver for work with Volunteer Canada • Darrell Fox of Vancouver for continuing the cancer research and education of his brother Terry Fox • Maureen Shaw of Victoria for her leadership in occupation health and safety and education for manufacturing workers • Master Seaman Christopher Mark Switzer of Victoria for his contributions to the Royal Canadian Navy and local charities • Lauren Woolstencroft of North Vancouver for her contribution to alpine skiing and the Paralympics

Employer says that talks with teachers have failed BY TOM FLETCHER Black Press

With negotiations stalled after 11 months of fruitless meetings and five months

of strike action, the bargaining agent for B.C. school districts has concluded there is no chance for a negotiated settlement with the B.C. Teachers’

Federation (BCTF). The B.C. Public School Employers’ Association (BCPSEA) presented its latest offer as talks with the BCTF resumed this

week. BCPSEA issued a statement listing new proposals for teacher leave and a two-year contract term, but expectations of progress on major issues

have disappeared. “The parties are scheduled to meet in bargaining for a full day again [Feb. 2],” the statement says. “It has become evident, however, that any number of presentations, explanations or meetings will not help the parties reach a new agreement.” BCTF president Susan Lambert described the latest employer proposal as “baby steps” toward a settlement. BCPSEA was more pessimistic.

When the latest offer was tabled Wednesday, the union’s response at the bargaining table continued the BCTF’s rejection of the government’s two-year “net zero” mandate on wages. BCPSEA says a union representative also emphasized “characterization of all BCPSEA proposals as ‘contract stripping’” and “the need to ‘go back to your master’ and get a new mandate (in all areas of our package).”

Education Minister George Abbott has repeatedly said there will be no new mandate, but declined to put a deadline on talks, which will reach the oneyear mark in March. A five-year contract with the BCTF, the first ever negotiated with the province, expired in June 2011. Teachers began the school year last September by refusing report cards, recess and lunch hour supervision and other duties deemed non-essential.

Mission

Chamber CONNECTION

missionchamber.bc.ca

Chamber calls for red tape reduction To promote the success of the small business sector and reduce barriers to doing business in communities across B.C., local governments, chambers of commerce, the provincial government and other key stakeholders, including the Small Business Roundtable, fully support the expansion of existing, and the introduction of new, mobile business license agreements in British Columbia. What is a mobile business license? A mobile business license, also referred to as an inter-community business license or inter-municipal business license, refers to a form of business license that is issued to mobile businesses (e.g. contractors and caterers) that allows the holder to operate across participating municipalities and regional districts with the purchase of a single license. What are the beneÄts of a mobile business license? All stakeholders beneÄt from a mobile business license. For local governments: increases licensing compliance, reduces business license application processing, improves information Åow among local governments and increases ability to monitor compliance. For businesses: saves time and money by purchasing one mobile business license instead of multiple non-resident permits, reduces administrative burden, and allows businesses to operate where their services are needed. For residents: increases choice in service providers.

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 9 Business After Hours TIME: 5-7 p.m. LOCATION: Mission Hospice Society, 7311 James St.

A mobile business license would help some businesses to operate across participating municipalities. What does a mobile business license look like? There is some variation among different mobile business license agreements that currently exist in the province, based on decisions made by participating local governments. Typically, at the time of purchasing a basic business license from the local government in which a mobile business is based, the business also purchases a mobile business license which allows them to operate in municipalities and regional districts that are participants to the mobile business license agreement. Under the Okanagan-Similkameen model, the cost of a mobile business license is $150. The license allows the mobile business to work in all nineteen participating municipalities and regional districts. Local governments retain all revenue generated by the sale of mobile business licenses, and businesses remain responsible for

complying with the bylaws of each municipality and regional district in which they operate. Mobile licenses in B.C. There are a number of other jurisdictions that offer a mobile business license. These are; • 19 in Okanagan-Similkameen • 13 in Greater Victoria • Five in Trail • Four in Cowichan Lake • Three in North/West Vancouver. The Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce, Greater Langley Chamber of Commerce, Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce and Chilliwack Chamber of Commerce went before their respective municipal councils on Monday night to request council implement a Fraser Valley mobile business license in partnership with other municipalities within the region. In Mission, council fully supported the idea and instructed staff to look into the recommendation.

promote the economic development of Mission and lobby for a positive business environment for the area. Sixty-Äve per cent of members have less than Äve employees or are home based businesses. The Mission Chamber works hard to develop programs that are suited to promote the growth of small business; and membership does have its beneÄts. Whether it is the many beneÄt programs, the access to low-cost advertising or the support of the network; Chamber members recog-

nize the value of being part of the organization. The Mission Chamber will continue to offer opportunities to learn, connect and prosper to its members. The Membership Committee of the Chamber develops and implements events, seminars and programs that enhance the member experience. What’s Happening Grab a in Mission

LOVE IS SO SWEET What great happiness comes from knowing that we are loved. And what pain and sorrow comes from knowing that someone’s love has been with drawn from us. Love is the cement that binds us together, as families, as friends, and even as societies. Therefore too, it is important to tell others how much they mean to us, and how much we love them, especially when this may be in doubt. When children are being punished by their parents, good parents do not withdraw their love; but instead, let their children know that they still love them dearly even though they must punish them. Spouses who are having a marital spat do well to tell the other that they still love them, despite their differences. And even the best of friends will disagree on occasion. It is important, if they wish to preserve their friendship, for them to let each other know that their love transcends the disagreement in question. So, we should let those we love know that we love them, especially when that love may be in doubt.

These things I command you, that you love one another. New K.J.V. John 15:17 St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church

FAMILY ANNOUNCEMENTS

Herman Singh Braich Jr. (June 5th, 1960) - Son, Brother, Uncle and Friend - left us suddenly and much too soon on February 4th 2012. Loved by many and respected by all, Herman lived, laughed, and spoke resonantly, creating waves, stirring discussion, and infusing our lives with his passion, belief and insistence for all things moral and just especially freedom and equality for all. While proud of his accomplishments as a UBC grad (philosophy) and provincial All-Star athlete, we will remember Herman most fondly for his transcendent intellect, endearing spirit and fearless wit, humour and courage under the toughest of circumstances. Kind, generous and patient, Herman will remain Uncle extraordinaire to Steve, Talia, EJ, Leni, Petey, Rachel, Riley, Bradley and Natalie, but will certainly be missed most by his dear mother, Surjeet, siblings Erwin, Reita, Bobby(April), Kenny(Chelsi) and members of his extended family, sisters Jesse(Harry), Jinder, Baldev and their respective children. Having passed before him, Herman has joined his father Herman Sr. and brother Herjiwan (Jim) in God’s presence. Herman, we love you, we miss you and thank you for bringing light, love and laughter to our lives. Rest in peace gentle soul. A Funeral service will be held at The Clarke Theatre, 33700 Prentis Avenue, Mission on Sunday, February 12, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. with cremation to follow at Bakerview Crematorium, 34863 Cemetery Avenue, Mission. Prayer services will commence at 5:00 p.m. at the Mission Sikh Temple. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Herman to the Canadian Diabetes Association would be appreciated.
