Final chapter of storied career Retirement tea Feb. 15 from 2 to 4 p.m. BY TIM FITZGERALD Mission Record

As Chantel Waite packs her bags and bundles up her twoyear-old granddaughter Charlie Ellison at the end of Babytime at the Mission Library, she can’t

help but fight back tears. For the past 35 years Elspeth Bowers has channeled a lifelong passion for literacy into her career at the library. She is as recognizable figure at the library as the thousands of books that line the shelves. But like any great novel, it must come to an end. For Elspeth, Friday, Feb. 15 will mark the end of the chapter of her career at the Mission Library. Three-and-a-half

decades of sharing her passion for the written word will be punctuated with a retirement tea and social Friday afternoon from 2 to 4 p.m. at the library. For Waite, the idea of not seeing Elspeth’s face and hearing her voice once a week leaves her chocked with emotion. “She’s such an amazing person,” she said. “She’s an anchor for our week. She provides such a rich environment for parents and kids.

She’s enriched so many lives in the community. It’s so sad to know she’s leaving.” Nicole Milne and her six-mothold daughter Talia wave goodbye for one of the last times. The young mother also laments the community’s loss. “She has such a passion and love for our children that’s not seen very often,” noted Milne.

Mission’s Library’s Elspeth Bowers sings a song with six-month-old Talia during Baby Time. Bowers, the 2006 recipent of the B.C. Community Achievement Award for her work in literacy, is retiring from the Mission Library, Friday, Feb. 15 with a tea and social from 2 to 4 p.m.

Premier Christy Clark kicked off the pre-election legislature session Tuesday with a pledge to establish a new fund from natural gas exports to support social programs and pay down debt. The main purpose of the “British Columbia Prosperity Fund” will be to pay down debt, starting in 2017 when the first liquefied natural gas facilities begins to ship LNG for export from the northern coast to Asian markets. It will be funded by a tax on LNG exports, as well as gas producers’ corporate taxes and traditional natural gas royalty revenues. The new fund is patterned after Alberta’s Heritage Fund, set up in 1976 as a legacy for Alberta’s oil and gas revenues. The B.C. fund would receive an estimated $100 billion from LNG revenues over 30 years, based on an assumption of five LNG production facilities exporting gas from the KitimatPrince Rupert region. The plan was presented in the throne speech delivered Tuesday by Lieutenant Governor Judith Guichon, to open a four-week legislature session leading up to the May 14 provincial election. The key task for the B.C. Liberal government in that session is to pass legislation returning the provincial sales tax to B.C. effective April 1, and the speech hinted at relieving that tax as one use for the new fund. “Whether it is eliminating the provincial sales tax, or making long-term
