Marc Dalton knew John van Dongen had been discussing his future with the Liberal party previously. But he wasn’t prepared Monday for the Abbotsford MLA’s blockbuster announcement in the legislature that he was resigning from the Liberal party to join their ri-
vals, the B.C. Conservative Party. Dalton along with the rest of the Liberals were told shortly before the official speech in the legislature. “It’s disappointing, for sure,” said Dalton, MLA for Maple Ridge-Mission. With van Dongen ditching the Liberals and boosting the Conservatives, and splitting the right-of-centre vote, the path could become easier for the NDP and more difficult for the Liberals as an
election approaches next year. “I can tell you one thing, the NDP is cheering the loudest,” Dalton said. “I’m sure they’re licking their chops.” Abbotsford-Mission MLA Randy Hawes regularly carpools back from Victoria with van Dongen and said that he will continue to be friends with the man. “I knew he had contemplated” leaving for a while,” said Hawes, but admitted he was “50/50” if van
Dongen would sit as an independent or join the Conservatives. Hawes said he has not been approached by the B.C. Conservatives, and his only decision is whether to seek a fourth term next year or retire to play golf, since he has turned 65. Dalton himself ran for the Conservatives federally and said he joined the B.C. Liberals to keep the NDP out of power and because of their track record on the economy.

Sts’ailes sign on to Hemlock expansion
Charges recommended for RCMP involved in fatal crash
BY KURT LANGMANN
Charges are being recommended for the RCMP member who was involved in a fatal crash in Agassiz last July. The incident was being investigated by the Abbotsford Police Department, who released a statement on Wednesday with their conclusion. “After a thorough examination of the evidence by Major Crime Unit detectives and Collision Reconstructionists, the Abbotsford Police Department has forwarded a report to Crown Counsel recommending a Motor Vehicle Act charge of Driving without Due Care and Attention,” it reads. Crown Counsel will now decide how to proceed. The fatal collision took place the evening of July 12, on the Lougheed Highway near Bodnar Road in Agassiz. An RCMP pa-

A newly signed partnership to develop a 6,000 hectare expansion of the Hemlock ski resort is a result of three years of negotiations between the Sts’ailes first nation and Langley entrepreneur Ralph Berezan. But over the 60 year term of the contract Sts’ailes Chief Willie Charlie said it will bring changes that will transform the way his people live. For this reason Chief Charlie emphasized that “the benefits we were able to negotiate are going to equal or be greater than those impacts.” The Sts’ailes Healing Centre hall on Morris Valley Road was filled to capacity for the signing ceremony on March 9, and guests included representatives of other First Nations, provincial government ministries and neighbours of the Sts’ailes. The ceremony followed Sts’ailes customs and included traditional songs and dances, but there were also good-natured exchanges of jokes and barbs between Charlie and Berezan, demonstrating the respectful fondness for each other that the two men have built over the three years of negotiations. The proposed development area is massive at 6,000 hectares and will extend the existing Hemlock ski resort to the western shores of Harrison Lake. In addition to the new mountains opened to skiing and a web of

ski lifts, there are plans for a marina, hotels, golf courses, riding stables, zip lines and more. “It’s a development that’s going to take 60 years (to complete),” said Berezan, noting that the application is still awaiting final approvals from senior levels of government. “The Sts’ailes are not the only government I have to report to. The ministries are watching me like a hawk and have to give me their approvals — that’s what I’ve got my lawyers for,” said Berezan, to laughter from the audience. In the meantime, Berezan has committed to replacing one of the older lifts at Hemlock with a new quad chair lift by the fall of 2013. “It’s a start towards this project,” said Berezan, who also presented a $100,000 cash gift to the Sts’ailes Legacy Fund that day, “as a token of our appreciation.” Chief Charlie stressed “the magnitude, the
enormity” of the impacts of “this very significant milestone for the Sts’ailes... it will have impacts forever on our people and once it starts we can’t get it back.” The benefits are, first and foremost, jobs and opportunities, said Charlie. As a year-round destination, Hemlock is projected to provide 22,000 jobs over the 60 years. “I go to the school and I tell young people you can be whatever you want to be in our own territory, in this one development,” said Charlie. “Also the stewardship policy, the heritage policy, the environment policy is incorporated in the contract, to help us maintain the integrity of our territory. “We are always willing to roll up our sleeves and do our share of the work, to stand up for what we think is right and not expect something for nothing. We’re going to be transparent, very clear and sometimes very loud,” said Charlie.

parking and traffic problems the area could not absorb. But in a phone interview Tuesday, developer Rick Redekop said the current official community plan (OCP) zoning designation for the area theoretically allows for even higher density than he was proposing under his OCP amendment. “It’s confusing for someone like me who comes in thinking this was a good project,” he said. “There’s so much emotion involved in a meeting like that, people are not talking clearly about what they want or expect.” The current OCP would allow a theoretical minimum density of 38 apartment units and
29 townhomes, which is more than what Redekop was seeking. But several people argued the 21 accessory coach houses would create a higher density desirability than was reflected in the OCP. Most councillors seemed to agree. “I’ve got some really big concerns about density,” said Coun. Nelson Tilbury, who voted against. “In this case they’re trying to put in houses with coach houses in behind.” “I’m all for high density in high-density areas. This is not that,” said Coun. Dave Hensman. “This is a residential neighbourhood that’s now going to have a high density tag on the end of it.”
Only Coun. Larry Nundal and Mayor Ted Adlem voted in favour. “I think as a council we have a responsibility to do what’s right for the majority of the taxpayers of this community,” said Adlem, adding it’s unfortunate the residents on Mitchell Street didn’t ask what the OCP plans were when they bought their houses, but that isn’t the fault of the developer. Redekop will now meet with the district’s planning department to see what will help to make the development more appealing. “The beauty of a public hearing is that [people] have the right to be heard and they were and I appreciate that process 100 per cent,” he said.
Two grants given to groups Two Mission community groups are benefiting from a total of $73,245 in the latest round of gaming grants released by the provincial government. The Mission Hospice Society received $72,000, while Hatzic Secondary School’s PAC has been given $1,245. The money comes from an $8-million provincial gaming revenue fund.
The community gaming grants are provided to groups which offer programs in sports, arts and culture, public safety, environment, human and social services, and parent advisory and district parent advisory councils. Over 6,000 community groups across B.C. have benefited from these funds so far.

‘McBarge’ will fit through bridge STORIES
BY
ADRIAN MACNAIR
Mission Record
The developer behind the plan to bring a floating restaurant to Mission has confirmed the former Expo ‘86 McDonald’s restaurant will fit past the Canadian Pacific Railway crossing. Howard Meakin said he was assured by Catherwood Towing the barge will fit through the swing bridge opening. “That was one of my first questions when I looked at Mission three years and eight months ago,” he said. The CPR bridge is 25 feet above the Fraser River right now, and about 65 feet wide between supporting columns, which led to speculation whether the 32-foothigh and 50-foot-wide barge would fit. But according to Ernie Catherwood, the bridge swings open at
the south end and leaves ample room. He said the opening is at least 85 feet high and 95 feet wide when the bridge is open, facts corroborated by CPR. Nevertheless, Meakin said it will be best to bring the barge to Mission in the winter season when river water levels are low, after the freshette subsides and the snow pack freezes again at the Fraser headwaters. He said the barge might fit under the bridge without going through the swing when the water levels are low, but not in spring and early summer. “The statistics are that the river rises considerably. It probably rises about 16 to 18 feet during that period.” Meakin received second and third reading of the foreshore portion of his Sturgeon’s on the Fraser project at public hearing
Jan. 9. He must still follow a number of other requirements prior to adoption of the foreshore zone amending bylaw, including the acquisition of adjacent land to meet district parking requirements. A public hearing will be held once Meakin delivers that plan to the municipality, but he said that’s a ways off. “We’re focusing on the marketing side of it right now and just to make sure that all our numbers work.” He said some of the business plan figures are slightly out of date after waiting three years to get tentative approval, so he’s had to update them in order to secure a tenant. “It’s looking good, but anything good takes time,” he said, adding he’s hoping the operation will be in full swing within 12 to 18 months.
Festival organizers seek council help Mission’s Rockin’ River Festival organizers have requested the district’s help in appealing an Agricultural Land Commission (ALC) decision that rejected moving a portion of the venue to Silverdale. “We’re getting bigger and bigger every year, and that’s one of the problems,” said Gordon Ruley at Monday evening’s council meeting. Rockin’ River currently has a three-year contract remaining with Mission Raceway Park (MRP), and that continues to be the preferred location not only for organizers, but noise mitigation and access for
emergency services. But Ruley said because the festival, now in its fourth year, is beginning to turn a profit, they’re able to bring in bigger acts, which will draw larger audiences. Ruley expects crowds in excess of 30,000 to 40,000 people and MRP just can’t absorb those numbers. Organizers submitted an application to the ALC last year for the Silverdale farm visible from on the north side of Lougheed Highway with the blue silo and red barn that is located within the Agricultural Land Reserve. Although the application had the written support of the
previous council, it wasn’t approved. They now have until June 1 to appeal. “I’ve lived here almost 50 years and I don’t think, other than when it was a dairy farm back in the ‘80s, there has been any farming activity there at all,” he said. There was one hay crop removed from the land last year, but Ruley said that was done in anticipation Rockin’ River would be approved by the ALC. “So to say that this negatively impacts on farming is just fallacious.” Ideally, organizers would like the farm to serve as overflow for parking, camping and
food vendors. Ruley said they only want to use the land for seven days at most, three of which would be setting up and taking down equipment, and the owner of the property is willing to sign a 20-year contract. “I can assure you have this council’s support,” said Mayor Ted Adlem. Council voted to have staff draft another letter of support to submit to the ALC and local MLAs, and approved extending hours to 1 a.m. on concert nights. Rockin’ River 2012 is scheduled for Aug. 9-11. Visit www.rockinriver. com for details.
The Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce is satisfied the district’s proposed budget will not negatively impact services for residents despite not raising taxes. At a public forum held at municipal hall March 15, chamber president-elect Elyssa Lockhart posed several questions concerning reductions proposed in the draft budget. The key areas of focus include a hiring freeze, the removal of the provision for inflation and reductions in policing costs. Although Lockhart said she recognized reductions will occur, the chamber is convinced this budget

Instructive failure The resignation of Burnaby-Lougheed MLA Harry Bloy from cabinet might be considered a minor blip in B.C. politics. In Bloy’s case, he shared an e-mail from a reporter with the individual whom the reporter was gathering information about. The person he shared it with is a substantial donor to the BC Liberals. The bigger story is that Bloy’s resignation is a microcosm of all that has gone off the rails for the BC Liberals in the year since Christy Clark became premier. Bloy was the cabinet minister responsible for Community Living B.C., which had done a terrible job in dealing with many of its clients, mostly adults with physical and mental challenges. Part of what went wrong was started by the Campbell government, but Bloy was not the person to clean up the mess. Now Bloy is gone from cabinet completely, and in what is rare if not unprecedented, Clark has also announced that he won’t run in the next election. One wonders if he was given a choice, and what his constituents think about the premier’s pronouncement. Clark’s government has lurched from crisis to crisis in the past year, with very mixed results in getting to the bottom of problems. Some like to blame it all on her management style, and that’s part of it, but the bigger truth is that this government has completely run out of gas. While it has some able ministers and good ideas, the public isn’t listening any more. The majority have turned their backs on the BC Liberals. It’s sad in a way, because the Campbell and Clark governments have done some good work. But this is how democracy works. It’s never pretty to watch a government self-destruct. - Langley Times

Payroll control and the BCTF B oth NDP leader Adrian Dix and his education critic Robin Austin have recently tried to sell the media a fictitious story about the party’s successful history of negotiations with the B.C. Teachers’ Federation. With the ritual combat between the BCTF and the B.C. government flaring once again in early March, Dix bragged to reporters that the last time he was involved in teacher talks, it resulted in a 0-0-2 wage settlement. That was in 1998, when Dix was working for thenpremier Glen Clark. The real 1998 story is useful, because then as now, the B.C. government was in a financial squeeze and looking at a huge set of negotiations with government unions in health and other sectors as well as education. Glen Clark, an ex-industrial union organizer, was known for pushing negotiators aside and taking control of hot files. The premier’s office took the lead in teacher talks, trying to set a strong precedent for low wage settlements similar to today’s
“net zero” mandate. The B.C. Public School Employers’ Association, representing the school districts, was marginalized and treated with the same disdain that the BCTF still reserves for them. And the result was an agreement where the union bartered higher wages for hundreds more positions and other benefit gains. This was one of the key mistakes that led to today’s showdown over class size and composition. Once trustees got a look at the premier’s 1998 deal, they refused to sign. For To the first and only time, the government had to legislate the settlement on school boards. The BCTF membership endorsed the 1998 deal by a large margin, and it did indeed set the tone for other union settlements in the late 1990s. Press reports at the time put the total cost of this supposed wage freeze at an 11-per-cent increase in the
provincial payroll. One of the first things I had to learn as a private sector manager is that if you don’t control your budget, you aren’t really a manager. And no one who lets authority over staffing levels slip away can possibly control their budget. Control over staffing levels is what the NDP let slip to the BCTF in 1998. And it is what the B.C. Liberals took back in 2002, with legislation that removed class size and composition from bargaining. In the constantly m repeated BCTF rhetoric, this was the “illegal stripping” of union contract terms that was struck down in April, 2011 by the B.C. Supreme Court. A closer reading of Justice Susan Griffin’s decision shows that she gave Education Minister George Abbott an out. If the province replaces staffing level bargaining with “an equivalent

process of good faith consultations or negotiation, then the legislation might not be an interference with freedom of association….” Bill 22 was written with this decision in mind, reasserting the government’s control over the payroll with a $165 million fund for special needs and a mediator to demonstrate those “good faith consultations.” University of Victoria business professor Ken Thornicroft noted last week that ceding control over class size to the union amounts to delegating authority over spending to someone who is not elected. The legality of that will no doubt be examined in the BCTF’s next courtroom assault on the provincial treasury. It’s an important comparison for voters. Which party is better able to represent the public interest in hardball negotiations with 300,000 unionized employees? YOUR VIEWS More nurses needed Editor, The Record: I am a young registered nurse (RN) working in a 76-bed long-term care facility. We are funded by Fraser Health, and therefore, our beds are always full. In the recent Ombudsman’s report, the Ministry of Health suggested that care facilities have adequate staff to provide 3.36 hours of direct care per person, in 24 hours. Fraser Health has stated they fund facilities at 2.72 hours per person. The facility I work in, we are currently staffed at 2.53 hours per resident of direct care hours. What does that mean? Direct care includes any person who touches you or your family member to provide care: RNs, LPNs, care aides, activity aides, physiotherapy, chaplains, etc. However, most are led to believe this number reflects di-
rect nursing care hours, which it does not. If you look at RN hours alone, we have one RN 24 hours a day for 76 people. That translates into 19 minutes of direct RN care per 24 hours. On my eight-hour night shift, it means I have 6.32 minutes per person for care. That’s it. If I spend any more time with one person, then I don’t have enough time to spend with one of your family members that shift. What happens if someone is sick, falls, or is dying? Add three people needing my help in one eight-hour shift, and now I have less than one minute to spend with each of the other 73 people in my care. That is still accounting for doing only the bare minimum for each of those three sick peo-
ple. What you may not know is that someone falls every night, and a lot of nights I have three or more falls to take care of. There is almost always someone dying, and most nights someone is sick, especially during flu season. I can not provide the adequate amount of care, nor the quality of care that you all deserve, with staffing levels the way they are currently. If I have more than three or four acutely ill patients during my shift, I can not care for the other 72 effectively. It is not safe. It is not fair to you or your family members. You deserve better. Safe patient care equals safe staffing. We need more nurses now. Support B.C. nurses in their fight for you. Barbara-Ann Kubb Mission
We have it too easy Editor, The Record: Robocalls! It seems to conjure an image of R2D2 with a headset and for many of us, the reaction has been, “Meh.” There is nothing wrong with robocalling, per se — except being as annoying as a Facebook game request — it’s actually used for many legitimate uses when mobilizing the troops is needed. The current scandal in this riveting season of parliamentary screw-ups is what appears as using robocalls to confuse known non-supporters of the Tories; and unlike our American cousins, Canadians don’t always “lemming” their way to the polling station. Now the public is aware and pundits are up in arms about this onslaught on democracy by the governing party, but the public’s apathy about the whole thing is the real danger. Ever since the Second World War, voter apathy has been on the rise and complaining about politicians has become Canada’s favourite hobby. And although the comments from armchair voters fly in all directions, the average Joe feels powerless, stays at home and abandons politics like an Italian cruise ship captain.
They do things differently in Europe — they vote. France, for example, has around an 80 per cent-plus turnout. They also demonstrate on a regular basis making sure to remind the government that the public is in charge and watching. Here, we order pizza on a regular basis and watch our waistlines grow; maybe a protest walk every now and then would help with the battle of the bulge. Another side effect would be that you might actually learn what really goes on in your country, and not just what Taylor Swift said in Cosmo. Europe has seen the descent of their government into totalitarianism and fascism, they don’t want to repeat the experiment; here in North America, we’ve had it easy. And maybe that’s what’s wrong here. We take it for granted. We’re complacent, lazy and unwilling to budge unless we are directly affected. All the decisions made in Ottawa do affect us. The price of freedom is eternal vigilance, not a large Hawaiian extra cheese and a CSI marathon; otherwise we will never grow as a nation, only our debts, scandals and waistlines will. Vancity CEO leads next Free forum tonight at LC leadership workshop The third session in the Mission Community Leadership series on March 31 will feature Tamara Vrooman, chief executive officer of Vancity Credit Union. “A Conversation with Tamara” at 9:30 a.m. will lead off the session on ethical decision making. As leader of Canada’s largest credit union, Vrooman harnesses the strength, breadth and diversity across Vancity to encourage growth and prosperity for the greater good. Following her earlier career in public service she works to ensure Vancity extends its financial success to facilitate positive social and environmental change. A “leader taps into the fullest capacity in a group of people, paints a picture of what’s possible and supports the team in making it come to life,” she said. After the keynote address with Vrooman, led by UFV’s president Mark Evered, participants will break into workshops to learn how to be ethically fit — a session developed by the Institute of Global Ethics — and explore how to use Rotary’s Four Way Test to guide decisions.
The day runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the ballroom of the Mission Best Western. As part of the Vancity’s sponsorship of the lecture series, members are invited to attend Vrooman’s keynote address for free. Individuals wishing to register for the full day should visit www.missionchamber.bc.ca to register, or come early to sign up at the Best Western. The cost for the full day session is $20. Crash victim airlifted to hospital BY JASON ROESSLE Mission Record
A 56-year-old Osoyoos woman was airlifted to Royal Columbian Hospital Friday afternoon after flipping her car
into a water-filled ditch. Local emergency personnel were called east of Lougheed Highway and Nelson Street around 2:30 p.m. March 23 after motorists saw an eastbound Subaru Legacy go off the road in the
north side of the road. Mission firefighters and paramedics extracted her from the car and she was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Police say neither speed or alcohol were factors in the crash.

Magazine ranks CMA near last BY ADRIAN MACNAIR Mission Record
Being ranked 174th out of 190 cities isn’t exactly where Abbotsford-Mission would like to be, especially when the subject is about the “best places to live in Canada.” But that’s exactly where the magazine MoneySense put the census metropolitan area in their annual survey of Canadian cities, which ranks municipalities in a quality of life index score based on 11 categories. Abbotsford-Mission scored 172nd in being able to walk/bike to work, 179th in new
cars, 157th for affordable housing (which isn’t bad considering Vancouver placed dead last and surrounding municipalities were runners-up), 153rd in available doctors per 1,000 people, 152nd for the jobless rate (the latest Statistics Canada numbers for AbbyMission shows a 10.5 per cent unemployment rate, well above the 6.9 per cent provincial average), 134th in quality of weather (we’re the fourth wettest out of 100 major cities in Canada, with 1,573.16 mm of combined rain and snow), and 128th in
cultural offerings. But it wasn’t all bad news, placing 90th in household income, 56th in discretionary income, and a high 14th place in population growth. Ottawa, Ont. ranked first place in Canada, while New Glasgow, N.S. took last place. Abbotsford-Mission wasn’t last place in the province, however, as Chilliwack, Prince Rupert, Squamish, Campbell River, Port Alberni and Williams Lake all squeezed in after 174th place. For more on the survey and other cities in Canada, see the rankings at www.moneysense.ca.

Recreation areas to be closed during Ruskin Dam upgrades BY ADRIAN MACNAIR Mission Record
Ruskin Dam and powerhouse construction upgrades will force the closure of nearby recreational areas for the entire six years of the project, reopening in 2018. Closures include the BC Hydro Ruskin recreation site downstream of Ruskin Dam, the Lower Railway Trail parking lot, and the lower part of the Reservoir Trail. BC Hydro’s Judy Dobrowolski said the sites were being closed
for public safety and will be used as “lay-down areas” by contractors for construction materials. But she said visitors can still access Hayward facilities from the Stave River parking lot, which BC Hydro has expanded by 80 parking spots. The Railway Trail will also be open. “I would say that the real effect comes from people wanting to access the Lower Stave. They won’t be able to as efficiently as they could from the Ruskin recreation site,” she said. As well, anglers who want to
fish in areas closed to the public are encouraged to access the river by boat and not on land. The project will also require the shutdown of Hayward Street from Wilson to Keystone for all six years, with access provided for local residents only. Hydro is waiting for final approval from the BC Utilities Commission, but that is expected imminently and construction is scheduled to begin immediately. An overview of the project, including impacts to the public, can be seen at www.bchydro.com.

The Mission Record Thursday, March 29, 2012 13
Morris signs with Cascades University of the Fraser Valley men’s basketball coach Barnaby Craddock is a big believer in recruiting players who have a track record of winning. Back in 2008, Craddock’s first full recruiting class for the Cascades featured current standouts Joel Friesen and Jasper Moedt. Both players were coming off a provincial AAA high school title with Abbotsford’s Yale Lions, and both players have matured into big-time contributors who helped UFV to a fourth-place finish at nationals this past season. Craddock is hopeful that his latest signee, 6’5 forward Luke Morris, follows that developmental arc. Morris led the Mission secondary Roadrunners to a B.C. AA crown this season, and picked up MVP honours at the provincial
tournament. “We want to recruit guys who can win a national championship, and he’s definitely a winner above all, Craddock said of Morris. Morris averaged 22 points and 10 rebounds per game with the Roadrunners, but Craddock doesn’t see him as a traditional back-to-the-basket forward. His all-around skill set will allow him to thrive on the perimeter as well. Morris joins Rav Dhaliwal (6’8 centre, Tamanawis) and Max Neuman (6’3 shooting guard, Maple Ridge) in Craddock’s 2012 high school recruiting class. “I’ve watched UFV play many times over the last few years and love how they compete and play as a team, Morris said in a press release. “I’m looking forward to being a part of that and studying at UFV.

Burning of debris not permitted where garbage service exists Now that spring is on its way, many people might be anxious to do some yard cleanup of branches, twigs and tree pruning. Once that’s done, they may want to burn the debris left over. Before you burn any yard debris it’s important to be aware of the district’s bylaws pertaining to burning. The district encourages all residents to recycle and compost whenever possible. If your property is located within the garbage pick up area
of Mission you are not permitted to burn yard debris at anytime. Yard debris (leaves, twigs, etc.) may be placed in “compostable” plastic bags, paper bags or in 80-L bins with orange stickers (stickers available free of charge at city hall). Small branches (less than 5 cm in diameter) may be set out in tied bundles not exceeding 1.2 m in length. No bag, bin or bundle may exceed 20 kg in weight. If your property is located outside the garbage pick up area you are permitted to
burn yard debris only between April 1-30 (30 days) in the spring and in the fall from November 1-3 (30 days), in accordance with the Burning Bylaw. Only one fire is permitted and may not exceed three feet by three feet, and must be supervised at all times. Any burning outside that time frame is a contravention of the Bylaw, and subject to penalty. District of Mission Burning Bylaw 29751996 is currently under review and the

Keep away from harmful weed Giant hogweed is an invasive plant that resembles cow parsnip, but can grow up to five meters (15 ft.) tall and likes to grow in wet areas near streams. The large, hollow, central stalk is green with purple spots. The dark green, coarselytoothed leaves are divided into three segments. Small white flowers grow in a large, flat-top, umbrella-like cluster, which can measure up to one meter across. An individual plant can produce 50,000 seeds. This plant is very dangerous when it contacts human skin and can cause severe burns. Sap contacting eyes can cause temporary or even permanent blindness. In Mission, it has so far been found along Draper and Silverdale Creeks. Several people have been seriously hurt dealing with this plant. Children may be particularly attracted to the plant, and should not be allowed to play in areas where this plant may be present. If you know have seen giant hogweed in Mission in other areas, please report them to 604-820-3795.
fire department is not issuing any new recreational fire pit permits at this time. Existing permit holders will be advised of any changes via e-mail, mail or notification in the local newspaper. Burning of construction debris, demolition waste, garbage or land clearing debris (large burn piles) is strictly prohibited in the district at anytime. Further information on burning can be found on the District of Mission website at www.mission.ca.

IMPORTANT NOTICE TO WATER USERS WATER MAIN CLEANING District staff will be cleaning water mains beginning March 26th 2012 for approximately 5 weeks in the following areas generally described as: • Between 7th Ave. and 14th Ave. from Stave Lake Street to West of Wren St. This area represents about 20% of the entire water system. Work will begin at 10:00 p.m. each evening, beginning Mondays and will be completed by 5:00 a.m. each morning, ending on Fridays. Each night an area approximately 5 city blocks will be cleaned. The process will create extremely discoloured and debris laden water as the water main side walls are scoured to remove any accumulated debris. It is extremely important that water users DO NOT use any water including hot/cold water taps, toilets, etc. during the cleaning process. District staff will be delivering a notice providing more detailed information about the program and scheduling, to your mailbox, mail slot or front door on the morning of the work proceeding through your neighbourhood. You may also access the scheduling information by phoning 604-820-3767 or accessing the District of Mission Web site www.mission.ca Sincerely, Rick Grant Assistant Operations Manager

Bringing good Karma to Mission BY ADRIAN MACNAIR Mission Record
When Mission singer Karma Sohn plays at Opening Nite Theatre tomorrow evening it will mark the culmination of a goal she’s engineered in reverse. While some music acts start out playing local gigs before moving to bigger venues, Karma wants to bring hers in the other direction. “We’re kind of trying to get a scene going in Mission,” she said. “I
know there’s a lot of interest in the arts and I think there’s room for more programming of eclectic music.” Although Karma plays most of her music in Vancouver, where she commutes both for practice and to go to school at Vancouver Community College for music, she wants to bring her band and others from the city out to the Fraser Valley. Karma describes her music as having a pop sensibility without being mainstream, and says
the vocals and score are intricately crafted. “But it’s also intimate and unaffected,” she adds. Karma says her debut album, Objects of Affection, is an adventurous experience that moves through a range of colours and moods, delving into dream-time and digs in the dirt to get at the heart of the matter. Karma is joined by partner and drummer Skye Brooks, who also collaborates with Karma in the band Copilots.
Brooks (who grew up in Mission) and bassist Sean Cronin team up to form the rhythm section, while guitarist Dave Sikula and Brooks have a long musical friendship, including collaborating with the band Inhabitants. Local songstress Leah Abramson lends her vocals to the mix as well. But although Karma collaborates with several bands, this album is very much her creation. “It’s been several years in the making. This is my first album
so it’s something I’ve put a lot of time into to discover my voice and figure out how I want to present it,” she said. Karma Sohn and her band will play with Vancouver’s Octoberman at Opening Nite Theatre, 33135 N. Railway Ave., tomorrow at 8 p.m. Seating is limited so make sure you get there early to get a good spot. Tickets are $8 to $15 at the door. To sample Karma’s music go to www.myspace.com/karmasohnmusic.

What’s Happening in Mission
LOVE UNITES/ STRIFE DIVIDES It is disconcerting to see how divisive the current political climate is within this country. But, that is the nature of politics and some things will probably never change. What is perhaps even more disconcerting than the political divisiveness is that supposed religious issues oftentimes seem to be at the center of these debates. Some of these people who claim to be men and women of God attack their political rivals in ways that are certainly not models of Christian charity, let alone models of political civility. Perhaps what animates these well-intentioned people is the conviction that they are right and that they are waging a battle for the sake of righteousness. We would all do well to remember that the good example of quiet and humble actions speaks louder than selfrighteous words or doctrine, and that when religion is used as a weapon to attack our enemies, it is no longer true religion. All true religion is about love, whose primary goal is to unite. That which seeks to divide is strife, and strife is the opposite of love.
