Mission parents have been kept up-to-date, says Trask BY JEFF NAGEL Black Press

Public school teachers voted 73 per cent in favour on Friday of withdrawing extracurricular activities province-wide to intensify pressure on the provincial government in the continuing labour dispute. The vote of the B.C. Teachers’ Federation (BCTF) could affect everything from high school graduation ceremonies to upcoming sports events. Mission teachers had already pulled back from undertaking any new extra-curricular activities shortly after spring break, joining a handful of other teachers’ unions across the province. Meanwhile, a decision of B.C.’s Labour Relations Board has ordered unionized teachers to prepare second-term report cards immediately, something some had resisted as part of job action. The ruling gives teachers until April 27 to

have them ready. Locally, Mission Teachers’ Union president Mike Trask said they have been talking to the school board about report cards for several weeks already, and parents will be provided with a synopsis of their children’s progress. “It’s worked smoothly for us,” he said. Mission teachers have been “keeping parents up-to-date” throughout the job action, Trask continued, and noted that the report cards will still carry letter grades, but the paragraph section “might look different. “We always advised teachers to keep [students’] information current,” given the job action will eventually end, said Trask. If a child were at risk of failing a course, an incomplete form would have been sent to the parents, as per normal See BCTF Page 3
