License legal grows ops as a business: Adlem BY JEFF NAGEL AND ADRIAN MACNAIR Black Press

Eight B.C. mayors have joined a coordinated campaign to legalize, regulate and tax marijuana to combat gang violence and other drug-related crime, but Mission’s top municipal politician disagrees with his colleagues. Three of the mayors are from the Lower Mainland — Vancouver’s Gregor Robertson, Burnaby’s Derek Corrigan and North Vancouver City’s Darrell Mussatto — while the other cities represented are Vernon, Armstrong, Enderby, Lake Country and the District of Metchosin. “It is time to tax and strictly regulate marijuana under a public health framework,” the mayors said in a letter distributed by the Stop The Violence BC campaign addressed to Premier Christy Clark, NDP leader Adrian Dix and BC Conservative leader John Cummins. It notes pot is more readily available to youth than tobacco, while smoking rates have been cut through public health regulation, not prohibition. “Regulating marijuana would allow the govern-

ment to rationally address the health concerns of marijuana, raise government tax revenue and eliminate the huge profits from the marijuana industry that flow directly to organized crime.” But Mission Mayor Ted Adlem isn’t buying that argument, saying Robertson and Corrigan are playing a political game, hoping that legalization will solve the crime problem. “I understand there are a ton of people that use it but if you support legalization of marijuana based on the fact that you’re trying to eliminate the crime involved, you’re barking up the wrong tree,” he said, adding that will only lead to arguments that every illicit drug should be legalized. Adlem said the bigger problem in Mission is the large number of legal medical marijuana growops operating without a business licence, calling the largely unregulated practice “a scary situation.” Adlem would like to see the grow-ops licensed as a business, pay taxes, and be subjected to the same two fire inspections

B.C. sawmills, including Mission’s, will be inspected for sawdust levels following a mill explosion and fire in Prince George April 23. While the focus has been sharpened for those processing dry pine beetle-killed logs in Interior mills, cedar mills have the same, if not a worse, potential for explosions, stated a forestry industry safety expert. “This is going to have an enormous impact,” said Mission’s Dennis W. Clark. “Cedar produces a very fine combustible dust. The risk is real.” Clark said dust accumulations are common in almost any mill, and companies have to make a concerted effort to reduce

the build-up on exposed roof trusses, and other areas. “There’s no question in my mind that this is going to have an impact on [mill] owners,” he continued. Waldun Forest Products’ Kirk Nagy, one of the owners, said dust build-up is “definitely an issue,” but in his mill, which is Safety Accord Forestry Enterprise (SAFE) Company Certified, regular cleanings are part of the routine, so the WorkSafe order is “more of a reminder.” The B.C. Forestry Safety Council created the certification to help companies improve their safety performance and to evaluate company safety programs. “There are some mills in our industry that should be cleaned up,” said Nagy. Labour Minister Margaret MacDiarmid said, “There is a common factor here, and

we’re all aware of it, and it’s sawdust. So although we don’t know what caused the initial fires or explosions, we know that sawdust may be a factor.” MacDiarmid said WorkSafeBC does not have a specific policy for dust control in mills. A meeting was being convened yesterday, after The Record’s press deadline, with government, WorkSafeBC, industry and union representatives to determine their next steps. The B.C. Coroners Service confirmed two of 25 mill employees on site died after an explosion rocked the Lakeland Mills sawmill in Prince George last week. The explosion and fire occurred suddenly on night shift, similar to the Jan. 20 explosion at the Babine Forest Products mill in Burns Lake that killed two workers and destroyed the mill.

each year as any other business. The eight mayors expressed concern that their cities will face higher policing costs due to “inflexible” federal policies like

mandatory minimum sentences for drug offences. Several city councils have also passed supportive motions. But Adlem said the balance of B.C. mayors evidently do not support legalization since only eight signatures appear

on the letter. The Stop the Violence BC coalition has previously released endorsements from various academic, legal, law enforcement and health experts. B.C.’s chief medical health officer Dr. Perry Kendall was one of the latest

to endorse a health-based approach to marijuana policy. In February, four former B.C. attorneys-general also backed pot legalization. Premier Clark has deferred the issue of marijuana policy reform to the federal government.

Record wins second place and Blue Ribbon The Mission Record took home two honours at last weekend’s Newspaper Canada national awards held in Toronto. This newspaper came in second place in its circulation category for best front page, followed by a Blue Ribbon, which recognizes overall excellence of the publication in terms of design, advertising design, writing and photography. “It really is an honour to be applauded

on the national scale for our efforts,” said Record editor Jason Roessle of the Canadian Community Newspaper Awards. “All of us who work here strive to provide our community with our best efforts each week, and to have our peers see this dedication, is appreciated.” “I am extremely pleased to see The Mission Record acknowledged once again for excellence in newspaper publishing. The

Record has a very loyal audience and readership continues to remain high,” said publisher Andrew Franklin. “The staff at The Record deserve recognition for all their efforts and I feel very fortunate to have such a dedicated and talented team.” The annual awards program celebrates excellence in community publishing from coast to coast and highlights the best in editorial, photography and multimedia initiatives.

Harris made Mission better place: Cook BY JASON ROESSLE Mission Record

One of Mission’s former mayors passed away recently, leaving a legacy of community service. George William (Bill) Harris was born April 19, 1921 in Winnipeg, Man., and passed away April 12 at the Dr. Stuart Pavilion at Mission Memorial Hospital. In his professional life before politics, Harris was involved in the credit union industry, said his daughter Geraldine Mapstone. Harris was first elected to District of Mission council as an alderman in 1972, and became mayor in 1973, a post he held

u until 1979. H stepped He a away from m municipal politics f a few for y years, and Harris was then re-elected as councillor in 1984 and 1985 before permanently stepping down. “He was easy to work with, said former chief administrative officer Norm Cook. “He was always making Mission a better place. He cared about Mission. Cook remembers a direct man, but not rude, who was very active in developing the Norrish Creek water supply system that is still in

use today. However, it was his involvement with the Mission Foundation where he gained a majority of his local recognition. Harris was one of the founders, alongside Cook, Gordon Ruley, John Weisgerber, Albert McMahon, and G.W. Walker. The non-profit charitable organization collects funds from donors and invests them, using the income to benefit the citizens of Mission in the fields of education, recreation, culture and the humanities. Foundation director Peter Robson first met Harris in 1962 when the newly arrived doctor

Culture minister defends sending money to district BY ADRIAN MACNAIR Mission Record

B.C.’s minister for community, sport and cultural development said her staff set aside money for Mission’s 120th anniversary celebrations before the district asked for it because they knew it would eventually request funding. Ida Chong said the ministry knew the milestone was coming up and contacted the district to ask if Mission planned to mark the anniversary. “Once they said they were, she said, “we knew they would eventually get to us, and so we set the dollars aside. Chong was responding to criticism last week from the NDP about $800,000 her government spent to help fund local anniversary celebrations — money that was available to municipalities without an application process. The $800,000 comes from the remainder of the $10 million 2010 Sport and Arts Legacy fund, most of which was sent to the BC Arts Council (BCAC) two years ago to disburse to arts and culture groups that applied. The NDP critic for arts and culture, Spencer Chandra Herbert, has questioned the minister in the legislature about where the remaining monies from the Legacy fund have been spent. Chong has said that a complete list of

funded projects will be available in the Public Accounts records of the legislature in early July. “This is not how government should be awarding millions of dollars of public money. “There should actually be a stated desire for the funds and criteria on how to get them rather than just the minister’s whim, Herbert said. The BCAC does a good job, but they can only jury certain kinds of activities and events, said Chong. “What happens when somebody comes and has an idea for something else? They don’t have the ability, because of their mandate, to provide that. Each city eligible for part of the $800,000 will decide how to spend the money but the province will ultimately determine whether the funds were properly allocated to arts and culture. Chong said the money “isn’t for a big birthday cake or balloons, but is expected to be spent on legacy projects and supporting arts and culture. The district has planned to allocate $35,000 to the Clarke Theatre for equipment upgrades, $30,000 to arts and culture grants (which will be awarded in September after an application process), and $10,000 for the actual 120th community celebration on Sept. 29.

started playing in a regularly held poker game on North Railway Avenue that was started by Harris and a few others in 1948. They gathered every second Friday, and the maximum bets never exceeded 15 cents, recalled Robson, who played for 32 years. “Bill was notorious as a poker player, he remembered with a laugh. “He played good and bad hands. But he was a gentleman. He was quiet and he considered every position. He would disagree with you, but not rudely. “I liked him. He was a nice man.

Don Calnek, another regular on the foundation’s board of directors, said Harris brought him into the organization in 1994. “I always found Bill to be a humble sort of character. You had to respect him just because there was absolutely no subterfuge in the background. He definitely had a heart for the people of the district. At his request, no service was held, and any donations were asked to be made to the Mission Community Foundation. To contact them, call 604-826-5322 or visit www.missioncommunityfoundation.org.

OPINION

Published and printed by Black Press Ltd. at Mission at 33047 First Ave., V2V 1G2

Playing name game Maple Ridge-Mission MLA Marc Dalton thinks his party, the B.C. Liberals, should change its name. He says the name – in place since the provincial Liberals formed in 1991 (and the one voters have elected to govern three consecutive terms) – is confusing to some centre-right voters, now that the B.C. Conservatives have surged to solid third-party status. Dalton says those who are federal Conservatives, like himself, will have a hard time voting B.C. Liberal next time. Last week, the NDP won two B.C. by-elections, in Chilliwack-Hope and Port Moody-Coquitlam. The Liberals came second in both. The Conservatives were third in each. The Liberals fear further vote splitting – or message sending – in the May 2013 provincial election. But changing the party’s name – to what hasn’t been determined yet – won’t prevent that. Doing so would seem even more confusing to voters, which may be the point. It’s easy to see why the Liberals would want to rebrand the party, distance itself from past scandals and failures, try to reverse the falling popularity of it and Premier Christy Clark. B.C. doesn’t need a new centre-right party – it already has two. The B.C. Conservatives beat the Liberals to the punch. Trying to decide between the two is what’s confusing. Are the Liberals about families or business? A tiger can’t change its stripes. Changing the party’s name is just painting over them. No matter what new moniker the Liberals come up with, or not, as long as the B.C. Conservatives are around, they’re going to split the right. And that’s what the NDP is counting on. – Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows News

Forest jobs won’t wait for 2013 S awmill tragedies in Prince George and Burns Lake have brought overdue attention to the larger crisis, as the end of B.C.’s latest pine beetle infestation continues to transform the Interior forest industry. The urgency of the timber supply situation was set out in a couple of high-level documents that were leaked from the forests ministry in recent days. These leaks show several things, one of which is that this is a government in trouble. Someone on the inside forced the unpopular options into the public arena. A report on mid-term timber supply looks at the four most beetle-affected areas: Prince George, Lakes (west of Prince George around Burns Lake), Quesnel and Williams Lake. In recent years B.C.’s chief forester has increased the annual allowable cut (AAC) of all these timber supply areas substantially to harvest dead trees. In Lakes, the pre-beetle AAC was 1.5 million cubic metres. Currently it is up to

two million, but once the beetle wood is unusable, it drops to 500,000. Even if visual quality rules are relaxed to release more timber, forest employment in the area would go from 1,572 jobs before the beetle epidemic to 521. Prince George’s much larger harvest total is expected to drop by almost half. And around Quesnel, producers say an economic supply of dead pine will be there for only another year and a half. This document and a subsequent proposal to cabinet To set out the options. They include relaxing visual quality areas, old-growth management zones and wildlife connectivity corridors. This is not as drastic as it sounds, given that the first areas to be opened up would be those where many of the trees are already dead. Most beetle-affected areas have a substantial proportion

of live trees. If decade-old dead trees were subsidized for biofuel use, this would support harvest and hauling of healthy sawlogs along with them. The government is also considering swapping some existing cutting licences to increase wood supply for the Lakes district, to provide enough long-term supply for reconstruction of the destroyed Burns Lake sawmill. There is also the prospect of awarding unassigned timber to “a single representative of the six First Nations in the m Lakes TSA.” Speaking to forest scientists who work in B.C., a couple of things become clear. This pine beetle epidemic may be the largest on record, but it is far from the first. And despite many assertions by former premier Gordon Campbell, it is not certain if this one is the result of a broader climate trend or just a string

B.C. Views

Fletcher

of warmer winters after decades of fire suppression kept older stands around. Lodgepole pine forests are fire-propagated. The term “old growth” has little meaning in a cycle of natural fires that doesn’t occur in wetter zones. But none of this will matter much in the urban political debate that is about to ensue. International environmental groups have convinced most people that logging is the primary cause of forest loss. In fact, the UN’s “State of the World’s Forests” reports have shown that 95 per cent of global forest loss is due to agriculture. Forest cover is increasing in industrialized countries, which use farmland more efficiently. The B.C. Liberal government needs to make some tough decisions quickly, before next year’s election. The premier’s vow to “create and defend” jobs is about to be tested like never before. Tom Fletcher is legislative reporter and columnist for Black Press and BCLocalnews.com tfletcher@blackpress.ca

Some damage can’t be repaired Editor, The Record: Re: An individual’s interest affect facts interpretation, April 26 edition. Mike Scudder makes a valid point regarding S. Barker’s and MLA Randy Hawes’ letters, in stating that facts are usually interpreted according to the personal interests of the person involved. This is generally accepted, but ultimately, when faced with indisputable facts, the law must be followed. In the question of pro-

tecting any agricultural land, as zoned ALR (Agricultural Land Reserve), most residents would probably agree with S. Barker, as such lands are a profound benefit to all living beings even though not initially recognized. This is no doubt why we also have Agricultural Land Commission, which makes the final decision if ALR lands can be removed from protection. Such removal is not up to the land owner, but to the commission, and

we should be thankful to those persons in the past who had the foresight to create both these entities in order to protect agriculture from being decimated with a thousand cuts. With increasing populations, we will need more land to grow and sustain our foods and lives, not less, and that is not open to interpretations. There are also opinions by those who wish to remove more land from this protection and rezone

it for other purposes, saying that if a particular piece of land has some technically non-agricultural crops growing on it at the time, then it should be “open season” to remove it from protection. Not so, as many wild growth “crops” feed endless eco-systems and wildlife, and also do a wonderful job in producing purified air as well as acting as filters along waterways, etc. So while it may not be recognized immediately how important it

is to protect such lands from human onslaught — including the current example about using such lands even temporarily as a parking lot for a concert, as such usage impacts the soil to a considerable depth, as well as absorbing leaks from car engines — such negatives cannot be “repaired” and would no doubt lead to the final destruction of yet another small piece of irreplaceable, life-giving space. Rick Hansen Relay celebrates 25 years BY ADRIAN MACNAIR Mission Record

The Rick Hansen 25th Anniversary Relay rolls through Mission May 16, celebrating the Man in Motion’s original panCanadian wheelchair tour to bring awareness to people living with spinal cord injuries. Though Hansen himself likely won’t be making the trip, Mission’s deputy director of parks, recreation and culture, Stephanie Key, said he wants others to pass the

figurative torch. Except instead of torches, they’ll be bearing special medals crafted by the Canadian Mint. Although more than 20 medal bearers will each complete a 350-metre leg of the journey through the district, Doug Pearson has been chosen to be the official medal bearer for Mission. Hansen became a Canadian icon when he began his world tour on March 21, 1985 in Vancouver, inspired by fellow British Columbian

Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope. “There’s lots of young people that don’t really know what he did, said Key. The relay is set up to trace his Canadian route 25 years ago and the district has some historical photographs from when the Man in Motion first passed through. Key said some people may not realize how much of a difference the tour made to assist those with disabilities. “When he came through town, they didn’t

have letdowns in the curbs. So they actually went out and created one so he could get on the sidewalk. The local celebration takes place from noon to 2:30 p.m. at the Leisure Centre. There will be music, a wheelchair obstacle course, storytime, games for pre-schoolers, a magician, a Rick Hansen video and photo display, a barbecue lunch, an anniversary cake and balloons, and more. Visit www.mission.ca for full details.

Municipality signs RCMP contract Mission will continue to be policed by the RCMP. In a statement issued by the district, the new Municipal Police Unit Agreement will provide for greater RCMP consultation, transparency and accountability with the municipality. While there are costs yet to be resolved, these can be negotiated

outside the agreement in the coming months, reads the statement. Mission will sign the renewal which allows for pay increases that caught mayors of other municipalities off guard. But in a previous interview with Adlem, the mayor said he wasn’t concerned because the district budget included an increase for police services.

Cities have been notified of RCMP pay hikes of 1.7 per cent in 2012, retroactive to Jan. 1, 1.5 per cent next year, and two per cent beginning in 2014. Adlem has said there is a twoyear opt-out clause if the district isn’t satisfied. Mission’s RCMP detachment currently costs roughly $9.5 million annually.

Cedar Valley Manor is selling quickly and it is easy to see why. The Mission Association for Seniors Housing (MASH) has a new project on the go. After successfully developing and operating The Cedars, MASH is now developing Cedar Valley Manor, a life lease for independent seniors. Cedar Valley Manor has been purposely designed for seniors in Mission who want to downsize but who are also looking for a warm and supportive community where life is simple. As Judith Ray, the President of MASH says: “Residents can live maintenance free at Cedar Valley Manor. Here they will be able to carry on living in the community they love without having to worry about the yard, snow removal, and the upkeep of their house. And as a Life Lease,” she continues “Mission seniors will have their financial interests secured and looked after as well.” Many people have been wondering about the “Life Lease” model used at Cedar Valley Manor, and as explained by Kate Mancer, Director of Cedar Valley Manor: “Life Lease is a form of tenure perfectly suited to seniors. It allows them

to securely use the equity built up after years of home ownership and provides a wonderful sense of community.” In a Life Lease the resident pays an upfront cost, or “entrance fee,” which is used to pay for the construction of the building, plus a monthly fee which includes general building upkeep and replacement reserves. Taxes are extra but life lease residents qualify for the Homeowner Grant. When people move out, they get 95% of their money back— with no worries about the real estate market and estate planning is so simple. Life lease residents don’t have to worry about management concerns, or being part of a strata council—all of that is looked after by a trusted community-based non-profit organization. Residents know their interests are being looked after by a group whose sole purpose is to provide good quality affordable housing for the seniors of Mission. The MASH mission statement sums it all up perfectly: “Caring for Those Who Cared for Us.”

In the wake of two byelection wins for the BC NDP, one BC Liberal incumbent is calling on his party to change its name. Maple Ridge-Mission MLA Marc Dalton says the party name is confusing people from understanding the BC Liberals are a coalition party of centre-right voters, especially now that the BC Conservatives have surged to solid third party contenders. “There is still a lot of confusion with name brand. People who are federal Conservatives, such as myself, they just have a hard time voting (BC) Liberal,” he said, adding his party needs to get out the message that a vote for the BC Conservatives is not a vote for the federal Conservative party. But BC NDP candidate Mike Bocking, who lost in the 2009 election to Dalton by just 70 votes, says a name change won’t alter anything. “Whether it’s the BC Liberals or some new name party, or the Christy party, or whatever it is they come up with, the people are not going to be fooled by it. They’re going to look at it and say, ‘no, that’s the same old bunch.’” Dalton recently campaigned for his party in Chilliwack, making phone calls and going

door-to-door, saying he met several people who wanted to send government a message by voting for the NDP or the Conservatives. In the Chilliwack-Hope byelection, BC NDP candidate Gwen O’Mahony, who lost the 2009 election with 5,638 votes, won this time around with a similar number. The Liberals, however, shed 4,586 votes from their 2009 showing, while the Conservatives improved by 2,350. The number of combined votes for the Liberals and Conservatives outnumbered the NDP win-

ner by 2,175 votes, which Premier Christy Clark has said is an example of the danger of vote-splitting on the political right. Dalton wouldn’t, however, entertain the idea that a minority government may emerge in 2013, requiring cooperation between the election winners and the two losing parties to pass legislation, similar to the federal government between 2004 and 2011. “What would end up happening would be a wipeout for centre and right parties,” he said, arguing the only scenarios would be either a unified

right-wing party under the BC Liberals or else an NDP majority government. Bocking disagreed, saying the Liberals are trying to polarize politics and spread fear. “Basically, that’s the elites on the right, the big business folks, wanting to remove choice from voters,” he said. Recent polls have suggested the BC NDP hold the sway of power with a 23-point lead over the Liberals and Conservatives who are statistically tied. The next provincial election will be May, 2013.

Vacant home burns A vacant home on Parr Avenue in Mission was levelled Sunday night by a suspicious fire. Mission Fire/Rescue Service was called out shortly after 9 p.m. after neighbours reported seeing flames. The building was engulfed in fire when firefighters arrived, and crews were on scene until just before midnight. According to Chief Ian Fitzpatrick, there was no gas or power to the structure, and the fire has been deemed suspicious. There was no insurance on the building, as it was going to be bulldozed when the Parr Avenue development project proceeded, he continued.

HELP YOUR ENEMIES All of the world’s great religions are in fundamental agreement that we should help our enemies and genuinely try to love them. The Talmud enjoins its adherents to bring their enemy’s ox back to them if they find it going astray. And, Proverbs tells us that we should go further than merely helping our enemies; we should moderate our feelings towards them: “Do not rejoice when your enemy falls, and let not your heart be glad when he stumbles (Proverbs 24:17).” Jesus goes even further, telling us that we should actually love our enemy. In the Sermon on the Mount He says, “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you (Matthew 5: 43-44).” Consider how Christian these words of the Buddha appear (some five centuries before Christ): “Hatred does not cease through hatred at any time. Hatred ceases through love. This is the eternal law.” In the Hindu poem the Bhagavad Gita are similar sentiments: “That one I love who is incapable of ill will, and returns love for hatred.” And finally, consider this statement of Mohammed: “All Creatures are members of the one family of God.” Can Christians, Jews, Muslims, or Buddhists wish for the destruction of their enemies? Can you love God and wish for the destruction of His creatures?

Mission girl enjoys the role of an aspiring actor BY ADRIAN MACNAIR Mission Record

Mission’s Alisha-Jo Penney is like any other eight-year-old child. She likes singing and dancing, drawing pictures, gymnastics, swimming, and skiing. But what sets AJ apart is her role as an emerging in-demand child actor in movies. She recently acted in the film Like Smoke (2011), a short movie entered into the International Cannes Film Festival for 2012. AJ plays the role of Lilly, a young child and daughter of an infamous gangster who is murdered shortly before she returns home from school expecting to have her birthday party. Although only a child, the film explores mature themes. How, then, does such a young person get into character for that kind of role? “I think about things in my life that are like that,” and then try to copy that, she said. Although AJ is somewhat soft-spoken and shy, she’s confident in front of a camera. Her father Simon says she decided to wanted to be an actor after watching the children’s film Santa Paws during Christmas 2010. She then enlisted the help of her parents to try to get into some roles in films, television and stage. AJ was born Aug. 18, 2003 in Stirling, Scotland, not far from Edinburgh where Simon worked. She and her younger brother Joshua later moved to her father’s home of Guernsey (an island in the English channel), before the family immigrated to Mission in 2007, where her mother, Linette, now works as a family doctor. Although she still remembers Scotland, AJ says, “I feel like more Canadian now.” AJ says working in movies is fun, but what she enjoys most of all is when the food arrives on the set. When asked if her brother, who is six, is also an actor, AJ said he has done work as an extra, referred to as “background” in movie parlance. AJ has already appeared in various background roles in some television shows in the U.S. and Canada. And viewers in

Guernsey will soon get a chance to see her in upcoming episodes of the U.S. TV show Once Upon a Time, currently being screened in the UK. AJ appears briefly as a child from Storybrooke

in episode five, and as a market child, along with Joshua, in episode 17. Additional background roles include the TV show Fringe and various other movie productions including Diary of a Wimpy

Kid. Although she’s got nothing immediately planned, AJ just auditioned for a new film role last week, which means she could soon be on the silver screen again.

Spring cleanup week is scheduled for May 7th through May 11th on residents’ regular collection day. Regular refuse, recycling and compost preparation procedures apply. CURBSIDE COLLECTION OF ADDITIONAL MATERIALS In the curbside collection area, residents may place additional materials at the curb on their regular collection day, as follows: • Additional materials are limited to 2 cubic meters per household (1 cubic metre = 6 bags of refuse, or 1 stove or 1 armchair). This limit will be strictly enforced. Refuse above the limit will be left at the curbside to remain the resident’s responsibility. • All additional materials must be manageable by two people. • Prohibited materials for curbside collection are: o televisions and electronics (free drop off at Mission Recycling Depot) o refrigerators, freezers and propane tanks (free drop off at Mission Landfill); o construction and demolition/renovation wastes, including gyproc, flooring materials, wood debris, fencing & roofing, bricks, rocks, toilets etc.; o automotive parts including tires, batteries or other vehicle-related parts;* o hazardous materials, including toxic, flammable, corrosive and petroleum products, paint, pesticides, used oil and antifreeze;* o bio-hazardous materials, including needles and animal wastes. Please help out collection crews and prevent litter by not placing loose materials that may blow away, and cleaning up incidental debris and “leftovers” promptly.

MISSION LANDFILL DROP-OFF (YEAR ROUND, SOME ITEMS FREE) • Please note that due to increased environmental costs at the Mission Landfill (Minnie’s Pit), there is no more free dumping of household waste during spring cleanup week, and the landfill will be open during regular hours (8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.). • Recyclable materials, such as blue-bag recyclables, scrap metal, appliances, electronics, yard waste, clean lumber, batteries, paint, gypsum board, used oil and filters, are now banned from disposal, but can be dropped off at designated facilities for recycling. For a complete list of banned materials and facilities, please consult your curbside collection calendar, phone 604-820-3736 or visit www.mission.ca. Please sort your loads to avoid surcharges. • Appliances, including fridges and freezers, and scrap metal, car batteries and propane tanks are accepted free of charge year round. • To prevent litter, loads must be secured. A $10 surcharge now applies to unsecured loads.

MISSION RECYCLING DEPOT FREE DROP-OFF (YEAR ROUND, ALL FREE) The Mission Recycling Depot, located at 7229 Mershon Street, is open seven days a week from 8:30 to 4:30 and will accept the following materials at no charge year round: • Any recyclables accepted in the blue-bag program; • Electronics and electrical items, limited to: o televisions o desktop and laptop computers, monitors, printers & fax machines o mice, keyboards & cables o small appliances, such as toasters, hair dryers etc. • Scrap metal, including empty propane tanks, barbeques, metal fencing, metal siding etc. • Most metal appliances (NO fridges or freezers here, please, due to the need for freon removal. Take these to the landfill for recycling); • Car batteries, household batteries and chargers • Leftover paint, spray paint and empty paint cans; • Specific household hazardous products (check www.productcare.org or phone 604-850-3551 for details).

*For additional recycling options, including details on this year’s HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE DAY (Saturday, May 12th from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.) at the Mission Recycling Depot, please consult your curbside collection calendar, visit www.mission.ca or call the Engineering Department at 604-820-3736.

Drop off your hazardous household waste May 12 On May 12, the District of Mission will fund a free household hazardous waste drop-off day for Mission residents to give taxpayers the opportunity to dispose of unwanted household chemicals in a safe, environmentally responsible way. No agricultural or commercial products will be accepted, and the event does not include residents of the electoral areas outside of Mission. Commonly accepted products will include residential pesticides, antifreeze, motor oil, transmission and brake fluid, paint, wood stains, thinners, solvents, paint strippers, rust removers, furniture polish, drain openers, pharmaceuticals, oven cleaners, swimming pool chemicals, concentrated acids, degreasers, batteries, propane tanks, fluorescent lights and mercury-containing thermostats. Please note that some of these products are also accepted throughout the year at the Mission Recycling Depot. For a listing of those products, please visit www.productcare.org or phone the Recycling Hotline at 1-800-667-4321. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Mission Recycling Depot, 7229 Mershon St. (across from the West Coast Express parking lot). Proof of Mission residency will be required, so please bring your vehicle registration, tax notice or a utility bill. To ensure a speedy drop-off experience, please have your identification ready, follow the traffic loop and staff’s directions at the site.

Volunteers are needed for Canada Day The planning for Mission’s 2012 Canada Day Celebrations is well under way. Each year the event grows, more attractions are added and thus the need for volunteers increases. It is anticipated that over 80 volunteers will be required to help with areas such as pony rides, set up, greeters, face painting, take down crew and more. The Mission Parks, Recreation and Culture Department is hosting a facepainting and balloon twisting workshop for interested volunteers. Mission’s Canada Day Celebrations will be held at Fraser River Heritage Park on Sunday, July 1. The event runs all day starting with a pancake breakfast and attractions such as the Canadian Tire Kids Zone, Superdawg Show and ending with a fire works display that lights up the night! Volunteers receive a free lunch, T-shirt and other goodies for helping out. To sign up on the volunteer list please visit the Mission Leisure Centre or call 604-820-5350 and press zero.

Look out for meth lab waste Spring is here and you may find yourself out for a stroll around the neighbourhood, or maybe down some country roads. On occasion, you will find that someone has used the area to dump household wastes, construction materials, diapers and other items. While these types of finds are unpleasant, generally upsetting and obviously not resulting from any level of community consciousness, there are some materials that should send you heading in the opposite direction immediately. Coming across generic 20-litre pails with lids, 45-gallon drums, together with black garbage bags or other plastic containers can be of serious concern, as they often contain the byproducts of illicit drug manufacture, and most of these substances are highly toxic. Do not investigate dumps of this nature. Do not touch, kick, move or open any of the containers, but call the fire department at 604-820-3793 or 604-8203794 at your earliest convenience. Report the exact location of the dumped materials, approximately how many pails, drums and bags you found, whether the materials were dumped in or near a creek, whether you observed any staining or odours, and whether there are other people in the area who may become exposed to the materials. If you feel that someone or the environment is in imminent danger or may have been exposed, call 911. Please report illegal dumps of regular, nonhazardous waste materials to the District’s Public Works Department at 604-820-3761, so cleanup can be arranged. For further information, contact the District’s Engineering Department at 604-820-3795.

It’s bear season in Mission again It’s around this time of year that bears are coming out of hibernation. They’ve fasted all winter and are now on the lookout for food. Once they find a meal, they will be back for seconds, and they will teach their cubs what they know. Bears are attracted by smells. If it smells like food to them, they will investigate. Bears are most attracted by garbage, compost, bird seed, pet food and ripening fruit. We all can help by storing all garbage, compost and recyclables inside, removing bird feeders from April to November, feeding pets inside and promptly picking ripe fruit out of our gardens. Please also remember that garbage, recyclables and compost should never be placed at the curb the night before collection, but must be out on the morning of collection day by 8:00 a.m. For more information, visit www.bearaware.bc.ca or call the District’s Engineering Department at 604820-3736. To report an aggressive bear, please call the Conservation Officer Service at 1-877-952-7277.

Bob died peacefully in his home in Mission. He was surrounded by family. Bob served in the Canadian Armed Forces for over 20 years. OBITUARIES

We are sad to announce the passing of Peter George Dyck after a hard fought battle with cancer. Peter is survived by Virginia, his loving wife of 45 years, sons Peter (Kristy) and Stephen (Leonie) and grandchildren Hailee, Kolby, Chloe, and Sydney. He is also survived by his brothers Frank and Henry, his sisters Mary, Helen, Katie, and Ruth, as well as many brother and sister inlaws, nieces, and nephews. “Big Pete” was born in Neuhorst, Ukraine and his family made its way to Canada when he was 5 years old. He grew up with many hardships, that helped to form the great man he became. Dad and Mom owned a successful construction company in Prince Rupert, and in 1977 all his hard work enabled him to realize his dream of owning a farm, which he operated for 35 years. Dad loved playing basketball, he was able to compete in the BC Winter Games, and he played in a men’s league for many years. His other passion was working in his shop and singing along to the radio while doing custom machining and fabrication, and inventing and engineering many complex projects. When his grandchildren came into his life, he loved to spend time playing and laughing with them. He had a love for good food, especially homemade dishes his loving wife prepared, and enjoyed being the life of the party. A Celebration of Pete’s Life will be held on Sunday, May 27, 2012 from 1-4:00 p.m. at the Langley Golf and Banquet Hall, 21550 - 44th Avenue, Langley, BC. We would like to express our gratitude to the staff at the Abbotsford Regional Hospital for their compassionate care during this most difficult time. If friends so desire, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society; www.cancer.ca British Columbia/Yukon Territory

“He will be greatly missed, and always remembered.”
