Rally protesters cheer on councillor Too many in-camera meetings held, says rally organizer BY CAROL AUN Mission Record
If Coun. Jenny Stevens was nervous about facing her council colleagues Monday night, she didn’t show it in front of the nearly 50-person strong crowd that had gathered in front of municipal hall just before the weekly meeting to protest actions of the district’s Public Safety Inspection Team (PSIT), and the controversial bylaw
under which it operates. The group moved inside council chambers as soon as the doors opened and applauded and cheered on Stevens as she made her way to the council table. The vocal group refused to let council begin dealing with the business of the evening and chanted, “We will remember in November” until Stevens spoke. You are exercising your democratic right by being here, she stated, and explained questions can be asked at the end during question period, but first, “tonight the seven of us here have a job to do. Will you exercise some patience and let us do our job?” Slowly, the crowd dissipated
aand the council m meeting proceeded. The rally was put ttogether by a group oof citizens unhapppy with council’s aactions in dealing Stevens with complaints about the PSIT, but what propelled the rally was when police seized Stevens’ computer and three from former councillor Ron Taylor last week, said Larry Nundal, one of the organizers. “Nobody else [on council] had their computers taken,” he said. “They seem to be playing See TAYLOR’S Page 3

Road racing returns to Mission Bicycle road racing was absent from the district for over two decades, until last Sunday when the Mission Sports Park Kermesse took place. The 5.5 km circuit featured the 14 per cent grade climb up Wren Street off Tyler, which challenged competitors all day, said organizer Bruce Wenting. Mission RCMP are looking for a quartet of Caucasian males suspected of trying to rip off a licensed marijuana grow operation. Shortly after 10 p.m. Tuesday, police were called to Dewdney Trunk Road for a home invasion in progress. Four males had attempted to gain entry to the home by stating they were the RCMP. When the owner didn’t open the door, the group broke it in and demanded to know where the marijuana was located. The male resident was unharmed, and the suspects did not find the drugs. A second 911 call was received from a neighbour who saw a late model van

games and the public got an awakening,” Nundal continued. “You have to be transparent and accessible.” There are too many closed meetings, he stated. Last week RCMP confirmed the actions were part of their investigation into a breach of trust and breach of the Community Charter complaint. The work is ongoing and no charges have been laid. On May 17, a district press release confirmed council reported the suspected unauthorized release of information, but also pointed out council does not advise RCMP on how to conduct business. It is also the district’s policy not to comment on police investigations, it read. Stevens, who is visually impaired and relies on her computer for communication, had her machine returned within 24 hours, but Taylor is still waiting for police to return his. Taylor, who was also at the rally, said “it’s disgusting” how long it is taking. Police told him they were going to copy his hard drive, and according to Taylor, it’s a six-hour job on his largest machine. The absence of his computers has affected his ability to earn a living and look after his health as he is battling cancer and there are a number of files to which he needs access. “It’s all part of intimidation,” said Taylor who has been vocal against the district’s PSIT, which scans BC Hydro data and inspects homes with higher than average power consumption for a marijuana grow operation. Mission residents who believe their rights were violated by the searches have launched a class-action lawsuit against the district, and are being supported by the B.C. Civil Liberties Association.

First degree murder charges laid BY CAROL AUN Mission Record
Fifty-two-year-old Jack Douglas Woodruff made his second court appearance Monday via video in connection with the 2008 double murder of Lisa Dudley and Guthrie McKay in Mission. He was remanded into custody until his next appearance on May 26. Woodruff, a Surrey resident, was charged with two counts of first degree murder last week after a 31month investigation by the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT). Dudley’s family was
in the Abbotsford courtroom last Friday and got a glimpse of the man accused of killing their daughter. “We didn’t know the person at all,” said Dudley’s stepfather, Mark Surakka, explaining the family went through a range of emotions — pleased for the arrest and charges, but also shocked and saddened because the ordeal resurrected the past. Surakka told The Record he would still like to see a coroner’s inquest, but for now, he and his family are preparing for the court process, which they know can take a few years to conclude. IHIT spokesman Dale
Carr said last week he could reveal few details about the case, including how Woodruff knew the couple, except to say that investigators believe the murder was targeted. A motive has not been revealed. Dudley, 37, and her boyfriend McKay, 33, were found by a neighbour on Sept. 22, 2008 at a rural home in the 31000 block of Greenwood Drive four days after a 911 call was received that six shots had been fired in the area. McKay was pronounced dead on the scene. Dudley was in severe medical distress and died en route to hospital.
Cpl. Mike White was given a written reprimand and docked one day’s pay in March after an RCMP disciplinary hearing determined that he failed to properly investigate the shots-fired call. He left the scene after being there for 10 minutes and did not follow up the next day, the board of adjudication concluded. Woodruff’s criminal history dates back to 1997 and mainly involves stolen property, fraud and stolen credit cards. He is also connected to missing Surrey woman Karen Batke, who was last seen in 2007. — with Abbotsford News files
Number of homeless halved in Mission BY NEIL CORBETT Black Press
The number of homeless people in Abbotsford and Mission has been virtually cut in half, according to the one-day snapshot that is the homeless count. The Fraser Valley Regional District (FVRD) and Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) have released preliminary results from the 2011 count. Volunteers across the FVRD communities visited shelters, soup kitchens, homeless service providers and doorways, to get a 24-hour snapshot of the homeless population. They chose a 24-hour period that
That’s due to a lot of incredibly hard work by agencies and volunteers. – Patricia Ross, FVRD chair
started March 15 at 10 p.m. The 2011 count found 117 homeless in Abbotsford, down from 235 in the 2008 count. Similarly, Mission’s homeless population plunged from 100 in 2008, to 54 in 2011. Across the region, the homeless population dropped from 465 to 345 — a 25 per cent reduction. “That’s due to a lot of incredibly hard work by agencies
and volunteers,” said Patricia Ross, the FVRD chairperson. “We need to celebrate the successes we’ve had.” Ron Van Wyk of the MCC noted there is still much work to be done with the data obtained from the count. Volunteers conducted a lengthy survey, asking homeless people their age, home community, reasons for being homeless, sources of income and other
questions. That information has yet to be tabulated, and a more detailed report produced. But he said there is reason to celebrate the substantial reductions in Abbotsford and Mission. Even before the official count began, the anecdotal evidence showed fewer people living on the streets. “Some of the services that have been provided seem to be working,” he said. “That’s why the programs are there. There are outreach programs in all communities designed to connect homeless people with programs and services.” Van Wyk said two new operations in Mission — a new 24-hour emergency shelter
and a second-stage housing facility — appear to have had a dramatic effect in reducing the number of people forced to live outdoors. There are still unanswered questions. He said the volunteers conducting the count found that many of the places in Abbotsford where homeless camps had been were cleared of trees. That leaves the question of whether some homeless people had been simply displaced. Not all the news was good. The eastern communities in the FVRD all experienced increases. Chilliwack from 98 to 111, Agassiz-Harrison from 12 to 20, and Hope from 20 to 43.

MLA Marc Dalton was just reviewing options BY PHIL MELNYCHUK Black Press
Marc Dalton considered looking at the names of those who signed the recall petition against him because he wanted to see how he was doing as the representative for Maple Ridge-Mission. But after considering that in April, he never followed through and never did look at the lists, he said last Thursday. “The reason why I was interested in it in the first place was to verify the number of signatures. “To me, it’s important … because it reflects the job I’m doing as MLA, so the numbers were important to me.” About 2,500 people in the riding signed the petition organized by
tthe Done With Daltton campaign because oof the Liberal MLA’s ssupport of the HST. However, organizeers stopped collectiing names after PreDalton mier Christy Clark m announced a mail-in referendum on the Harmonized Sales Tax in June and July. Organizers would have had to collect more than 14,000 names in order to force Dalton to resign and call a byelection. But the representative for Maple Ridge-Mission never pursued the idea, which may have been just as well, given the negative response that followed his mention of the idea last month. Dalton said when he was first
considering it, he had just talked to Elections B.C. and was just reviewing his options, but had made no decision. “I was reviewing my options at the time.” He pointed out that organizers of a campaign to recall MLA Terry Lake in Kamloops-North Thompson shredded the lists rather than turn them into Elections B.C., so it was impossible to verify numbers. Since then, “I haven’t pursued it.” Chad Moats, organizer of the Kamloops recall effort, confirmed the shredding and said while Elections B.C. didn’t like it, there was nothing illegal about it. Dalton pointed out that any member of the public can take a look at the lists in the Elections B.C. office
in Victoria. “It doesn’t matter who signed the forms, or who voted for me or who didn’t vote for me, I’m there to serve all constituents.” One of those will be Maple Ridge Renee Tyson, who wanted to talk to Dalton last Friday. She says she had an appointment then and still wants to talk to him, even though Dalton’s no longer looking at the petition. Tyson said she took it as an insult when Dalton said some people may have signed the recall petition thinking it was an anti-HST petition. She reiterated that she wasn’t involved with the Done With Dalton campaign, although organizers from that campaign – Wilf McIntyre and Corisa Bell – showed up at

the MLA’s office on Friday. Her next appointment is May 20. “I’m looking forward to meeting with her concerns, whatever they may be,” Dalton said. Scrapping long gun registry at top of Conservative agenda Randy Kamp’s constituency office stayed open throughout the election campaign, fielding calls from Canadians, helping them navigate bureaucracy and fill out forms. A day after his fourth victory as Conservative MP for Pitt Meadows-Maple Ridge-Mission, Kamp was back at his desk catching up on everything he’d missed over the past five weeks. The Tory blue election signs planted throughout the riding were already gone. “We’ve got people with cases and issues that I have to follow up on. I get back to work as quickly as I can,” said Kamp, adding most of the files deal with immigration. At the final tally, Kamp garnered 28,803 votes, almost 10,000 more than the second-place finisher, NDP candidate Craig Speirs, who received 18,835. Liberal Mandeep Bhuller came a distant third, taking 2,739 votes, while Green Peter Tam wasn’t far behind with 2,629. A date for Parliament’s resump-
tion has yet to be set, so Kamp will remain in Maple Ridge until one is picked. Under Section 38 of the constitution, the governor general is only obligated to summon the House “from time to time,” meaning a precise date of the next legislative session is not fixed. When the 41st session does begin, Kamp returns as a member of a majority government. The obstacles the Conservatives faced in minority are now gone. Previously-defeated crime bills and scrapping the long gun registry are at the top of the legislative agenda. Kamp said the government will immediately begin work on a new infrastructure program, similar to the Economic Action Plan, but smaller in scope. They also intend to bring back a federal budget, similar to the one that was defeated March 26. Kamp said his constituents can look forward to the continuation
of the energy retrofit program and additional funding for low income seniors. As for his role in a majority government, Kamp is ambivalent about where he’ll be going. As parliamentary secretary to the minister of fisheries, Kamp was trying to resolve the issue of halibut allocation before the writ dropped. He’d like to conclude that work, but “wouldn’t mind getting involved with some other department. “We’ll just wait and see what I am asked to do,” said Kamp. Until then, he plans on keeping busy, especially trying to complete several projects around his house, assigned to him by his wife Ruth. He mowed his lawn on Tuesday, less than a day after his sweeping victory. “I always cut my own lawn,” said Kamp. If it’s sunny this weekend, he’ll be puttering around the garden in his backyard.

DBA given one-time $5K grant The Downtown Business Association (DBA) will receive a one-time $5,000 grant from the district to help alleviate this year’s costs for hanging baskets along Mission’s main thoroughfare. Communities in Bloom has worked hard to promote beautification in the area, and it would be a step backwards if the district didn’t support this year’s efforts, commented Mayor James Atebe. In addition to the grant, council is also asking the DBA to reassess its membership and consider increasing fees to make sure there is sufficient funding going forward to purchase and maintain the baskets, which cost the local business group $22,000 each year. The majority of the cost is for watering.

Help smokers quit It wasn’t long ago that smoking was not only a tolerated habit, but was also encouraged as an acceptable way to unwind from the stress of the day. From airplanes to bars and restaurants, people from every socio-economic background were targeted by tobacco companies selling the idea of smoking. When studies began to prove the link between smoking and major health problems such as heart disease, lung cancer and stroke, it was too late to stop smoking from becoming part of our culture. To this day, smoking is still regarded by medical definitions as a lifestyle choice rather than an addiction. But an initiative from the B.C. government aims to reduce smoking and its effects that cost the economy billions in lost wages and health-care expenses annually. Premier Christy Clark announced that smoking cessation tools such as nicotine patches and gum would be paid for under the province’s prescription drug program. While critics decry the move as political posturing from a new premier trying to win not only a byelection but soon a provincial election, it is a step in the right direction to reducing smoking. Over the next four months, Clark will develop the program further by consulting with other stakeholder groups. Studies show that people who invest financially in their own treatment are more successful, which could indicate a rebate upon successful completion of a program might be more effective. Further support, like counselling for behavioural and emotional triggers – having that cup of coffee with your mid-morning smoke – would also help British Columbians kick the habit for good. - Nanaimo News Bulletin

Stick men, straw men debate B
y now you’ve probably been exposed to the B.C. government’s “stick man” ad campaign to raise awareness of the harmonized sales tax. Stick men, or rather stick persons, sort out conflicting claims about the tax by going to the B.C. government’s website to get an accurate summary of what is and isn’t costing them more. Later versions will no doubt feature stick persons checking their mail for brochures offering arguments for and against the HST, and of course, those all-important mail-in ballots that will arrive in June. This is an urgent prerequisite to an informed vote. Anyone who listens in to a telephone town hall or phone-in show, or gets reader feedback such as I receive, knows that the basic facts are still widely misunderstood. So what does the NDP opposition focus on? The ads cost $5 million, grumbles NDP finance critic Bruce Ralston. Add that to town halls and mailers and the referendum funding boils down to $7 million for pro-HST and a mere $250,000 for the
FightHST effort. This is a classic “straw man” argument, where one sets up a false premise and then knocks it down. The ads do not advocate, they merely inform. Stikine MLA Doug Donaldson propped up the NDP’s oldest scarecrow, that big “Liberal donor corporations” are the main beneficiaries of the HST. This is a vital point for rural B.C., which depends on resource industries with huge machinery investTo ments, and he has it exactly wrong. In fact the entire ‘big business benefits most from HST’ narrative is false. Vancouver tax lawyer David Robertson points out this is one of the “myths and misrepresentations” propagated by Bill Vander Zalm, who has effectively set NDP tax policy since their limping retreat on the carbon tax. In 24 pages, Robertson has written the clearest analysis I’ve seen so far, includ-
ing a thorough demolition of Vander Zalm’s crude scare campaign known as FightHST, which has singled out banks and large resource companies. Robertson notes that banks are actually worse off. “…unlike most businesses, banks, financial institutions and insurance companies cannot recover GST/HST they pay on expenses,” he writes. They actually pay more under HST than they did under the old provincial sales tax (PST). m As for FightHST’s other specified villains, “large corporations” and “large resource companies,” their machinery and production equipment were long ago exempted from sales tax. No change there. “What the PST legislation did not contain were PST exemptions aimed specifically at small, independent businesses,” Robertson writes. “So construction workers like welders, plumbers, electricians and other tradesper-

sons had to pay an additional seven per cent PST on their work trucks, tools and equipment that they used to earn a living; retailers and corner store operators had to pay an additional seven per cent on their shelving, refrigerators and cash registers; accountants and other professionals had to pay PST on their office furniture, computers and software; truckers had to pay an additional seven per cent PST on their truck tractors and trailers …” and so forth. This is what the HST fixes. Obviously, Big Labour doesn’t like all these independent contractors. Therefore the NDP must also “fight” HST. I’ve talked about the trend towards self-employment and small business as the Canadian economy adapts in a fast-changing world. You may not like that trend, and you may wish that everyone could have a union job with an employer-subsidized pension. That’s not what is happening today. Seniors should have exclusive use of Taulbut Street centre Editor, The Record: Re: MCSA wants seniors’ opinions, May 12 edition. This story reads like a fairy tale of bafflegab and renderings from apologists and enablers, that permit Mission council to continue its shameful neglect of seniors. Mission council recently retained a consultant who recommended the community activity centre be designated the seniors activity centre. Council placed the report on a shelf, without even a whimper of protest from the Mission Seniors Centre Association (MCSA) board. Coun. Paul Horn recently had five questions answered, not by the board, but rather an
autocratic response by the MCSA president, Frank Sleigh. Now, the district’s senior planner has convened a focus group of hand-picked participants, many of whom are from the status-quo segment. How better to get the answers you want? The survey mentioned is folly, and this procrastination just delays council acting with empathy to afford seniors a place to call their own. The MSCA board is the opponent to progress, indeed the benefactor of five years of failure, so far, to achieve its constitutional mandate. They make foolhardy excuses and act as apologists for council’s indifference
and neglect. Rather than hold council to account for its lack of empathy and duly represent seniors, Sleigh says, “It just takes time to get things going.” As well, “council is just being careful with public money.” But then the glaring anomaly where Sleigh states the building’s bills are covered by the municipality, and if they move into their own building, associated costs would follow. This is all conjecture. First, the small and sporadically used space is free, but no plans are in evidence to move anywhere, so is this all fearmongering? At present, there is drop-in, crib, bingo, and
line dancing that has existed for years, some bi-weekly meetings for OAPO and MSCA, an exercise class for maybe 12 people, use of a small meeting room and cramped lounge, but most space is only during certain scheduled hours. Anyone who has visited a functional seniors’ activity centre, like Maple Ridge, should find it ironic that Mission, for its size, is one of the only municipalities that does not look after seniors and have an activity centre. Council must immediately assign the complete building to seniors’ use, and continue paying operating costs as a fee-for-service. Being respectful and
responsive to elders’ needs is part of a culture that appears alien to Mission, but sadly seniors representatives are largely to blame. They fail to negotiate from a position of strength, as 10,000 senior voters 50+ years of age, of an eligible voter list of 22,000, can be persuasive. This is an election year! George F. Evens Mission

Editor, The Record: Are Mission residents aware they are losing one more privilege? The new Train Bus schedule starting June 20 has some big changes, including that buses from Vancouver are now ending at Haney. It’s a long walk from there home. Also, the daily 9:25 a.m bus is cut out altogether from Mission to Vancouver; it leaves from Haney only. The no weekend service is very sad, and this does little to encourage public transportation use. Jane Ducharme Mission
Stranger’s action restores reader’s faith in humankind Editor, The Record: On May 9, around 5 p.m., I was outside Starbucks in the Junction Mall with my husband, our friend, and our two dogs. My husband, Dave, handed me his wallet (as I had left my purse at home) and asked me to run into Save On Foods to grab some bread for dinner. As well as the bread, I picked up some bananas, coffee, and chips. When I tried to pay my debit card came back insufficient funds. It really is embarrassing and awful. The cashier had al-
Watch for pedestrians Editor, The Record: Friends, neighbours, countrymen, lend me your ears. If you turn left or right, while a pedestrian is crossing, while the light is in their favour, in an accident one may lose an appendage or two. I, for one, like my appendages intact. ready put the few groceries in the bag. I told her I would be right back and I ran out to my husband, who was still sitting at Starbucks. I explained what happened, and asked him to go back inside to pay with a different card. He came back out a couple of minutes later with the bags. The cashier had told him that the woman who had been behind me had paid for my groceries! No one does such unselfish acts anymore. I did not notice the woman standing behind me in
line, and she never said a word when she must have walked past us upon leaving the store. She remains anonymous. I was almost in tears when I learned what she had done for me, a complete stranger. And she gives me hope, because now I know there’s at least one kind, caring, unselfish person in the world today. We could all learn from her, and I’m going to pay it forward. Thank you, my dear lady! Chanine Clarke Mission

Offer your opinion on the FVRD’s solid waste management plan Learn the Fraser Valley Regional District’s (FVRD) plan for garbage and recyclables at a May 30 open house. The government has been working to update its 1996 solid waste management plan (SWMP), and in 2009, the first round of public consultation was completed. The feedback, along with input from member municipalities was considered by the FVRD and its advisory committee when developing the updated draft plan.
The plan shows an updated vision, which acknowledges the changing attitudes and encourages a shift towards less waste being created. The strategies focus on making the recycling and reduction of garbage as accessible and convenient as possible. The draft plan explores options such as region-wide composting, expanding recycling opportunities for all sectors, including businesses, institutions, and industries, and continuing to emphasize the need for residents to take personal responsibility for their garbage. The document also calls for a 25 per cent reduction in the amount of residential garbage left out at the
curb on collection day, and challenges all sectors to divert at least 70 per cent of their material from landfills by 2016. To give the public an opportunity to provide feedback on the draft plan, the FVRD is hosting open houses around the region. Mission’s will be at the library on Second Avenue, May 30, from 6 to 8 p.m. If you can’t attend, send your feedback to planfeedback@fvrd. bc.ca, fax it to 604-702-5467 or mail it to Fraser Valley Regional District, 45950 Cheam Ave., Chilliwack, B.C., V2P 1N6, attention: Stacey Barker. Last week Mission RCMP and community Speed Watch volunteers and ICBC representative Don Miller jump-started the operation near Cedar Street and Seventh Avenue, one of the community’s top crash corners. Any intersection is dangerous if inappropriate driving behaviour is exhibited, said Miller. According to ICBC, driver actions contribute to 63 per cent of all police-attended crashes involving injuries and fatalities in B.C. In the Lower Mainland, 53,300 people are injured every year and 74 per cent of the crashes happen at intersections, said Miller. “We all need to understand driving is complex,” he added. “When you slow down, you see more of the road.” Mounties will also be looking for people having a dog on their lap, using a cellphone behind the wheel, and seatbelt use, said Mission RCMP Sgt. Miriam Dickson. We’re seeing people with seatbelts behind their shoulders, which defeats the purpose of a shoulder strap, Dickson explained. “A lap belt won’t hold you back in a crash.” Dickson often hears people who are pulled over for a driving infraction ask why police aren’t chasing the “bad guys” instead of writing tickets, and she tells them, “the highest cause of death in the country is traffic collisions. Safety is a primary focus.”

Far fewer Fraser sockeye predicted this summer BY JEFF NAGEL Black Press
Last year’s massive run of roughly 30 million sockeye salmon that filled freezers and kept barbecues sizzling won’t likely be repeated this summer. Instead, officials at the Pacific Salmon Commission are forecasting a much lower return of between three and five million sockeye to the Fraser River for 2011. That means relatively little, if any, sockeye fishing for commercial fishermen and sports anglers, and possibly even First Nations, who get first priority subject only to conservation needs. “Expectations are much lower,” said Mike Lapointe, the commission’s chief biologist. He predicts fishing will be heavily restricted to protect threatened stocks, particularly early running sockeye bound for Stuart Lake and late running fish that end up in Cultus Lake. “It will be nothing in the way of what we had last year,” Lapointe said. “I think people are pretty realistic.” Last year included the huge run of sockeye that return to the Fraser’s Adams River tributary northeast of Kamloops once every four years. Some scientists think the already big
run was further intensified because ash from an Alaskan volcano may have fallen at just the right time to fertilize ocean water and increase the food supply for juvenile sockeye from the Fraser. Lapointe doubts the volcano theory, instead believing the wide variations possible in salmon returns can account for the difference. Over the long term, about five adult Fraser sockeye tend to return for every one that spawned four years earlier. This year’s return was spawned by roughly 900,000 adults four years ago. But that’s a far cry from the 4.5 million spawners in 2006 that produced 2010’s huge run. Even so, the forecast models indicate this year’s run could vary anywhere from one million to 15 million fish, with the median of around four million most probable. The next three seasons are all expected to be similar until the Adamsbolstered run spawned in 2010 returns in 2014. “The next three years in particular are coming off low runs,” Lapointe said. “2007, 2008 and 2009 were very low returns with fairly low numbers of spawners.”

A handful of outstanding women from Abbotsford and Mission were recognized for their professional achievements and personal qualities on Wednesday evening at the annual Myrtle Evertt Woman of the Year Awards in Abbotsford. But only two received the title of Woman of the Year. Ann Senae was awarded the title for the Mission area. Senae is a self-employed certified general accountant and charter member of the Mission Business and Professional Women’s Club. She has served with many non-profit groups in Mission, including the Valley Women’s Network, the Women’s Resource Society, the Hospice Society, and the Chamber of Commerce. Paulette Baker received the honour for the Abbotsford region. A silent auction was held at the event to raise money for the two bursaries awarded to two graduating young women: Phoenix Pham from W.J. Mouat Secondary School in Abbotsford and Samantha Raniak from Hatzic Secondary School in Mission.

What’s Happening in Mission
ADVANCE YOUR GOALS
Sometimes the sheer size of a task has a paralyzing effect on us. How do you overcome the blank page or computer screen in front of you when you know you have a twenty-page report to write? The answer is, “one word at a time.” When I was in graduate school and procrastinating getting started on my dissertation, I was effectively paralyzed by the size and scope of my task, since I knew I had to write roughly twohundred pages of scholarly material. Sensing what was going on, my advisor suggested that I write a page per day, and this advice worked wonders. I certainly couldn’t sit down and just write two hundred pages, but I could write a page a day. The moral of the story here is that doing some small bit every day to advance towards our goal will get us there, no matter how big the goal. Even the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. And you can always go one more step, which eventually gets us to our goal. Go to the ant, O sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise. R.S.V. Proverbs 6:6
