his Saturday marks the end of an era in Mission as the Bellevue Hotel changes ownership for the first time in nearly 80 years. Patrons, friends, and family of the Fletchers will gather for a day of nostalgia to reminisce over Mission’s first neighbourhood pub. Three generations of Fletchers ran the hotel, beginning with George and Mildred, who started the hotel after borrowing $100 to put a down payment on it. It then passed on to their son Bob, followed by his son Brad. “It was a little box of a hotel with an area north of it where they often had a carnival,” remembers 90-year-old Larry Reid, a lifelong friend of the Fletcher family and best man at Bob’s wedding in 1949. When the Bellevue opened in 1935 there were 12 rooms, a dining room, and a kitchen where you could get a meal for between 45 and 50 cents. For years, the Bellevue operated as a hotel and cafe, but like most towns in B.C. there was a dearth of liquor. George had the townsfolk sign a petition to try and get a beer license and worked out delivery from a Vancouver brewery. When the hotel was completely rebuilt in 1948-49 to its present state, they got the license and the Bellevue took off. “Georgie was a pretty savvy guy,” said Larry. “I liked him and he was a good host. He would walk around in the hotel there — they called it the beer parlour — and he would sit down and buy a beer for them.” Lorne Rockwell says when

he first started visiting in 1967, the bar had two entrances, one for women and one for men. “It was the law of the land that single guys couldn’t sit with women,” he said, adding there was a wall inside the pub separating the genders. The wall came down around the time former waitress Betsy

Shaw began in the late ‘60s. A single mother, Betsy raised five kids and one grandchild in an establishment known primarily as a hangout for working men. “I remember Noris [Bedford the manager] was away when Bill Rourke [the bartender] hired me and when Noris

“Bill just looked at him and he said, ‘Hey! You stay away from her. That happens to be my niece and you do not happen to pass muster with me, fella.’” After that everybody thought they were related and she even took to calling him Uncle Bill, which she does to this day.

came back he said, ‘No way, we don’t have girls working in here.’” But Bill urged him to give her a chance and she was soon a fixture. She remembers one time as a young waitress a man was aggressively making a pass at her and she didn’t know how to handle it.

Lorne says the Bellevue was always a supporter of local sports. Back in 1971 there were about 10 fastpitch baseball teams in Mission who would play at the fairgrounds where the water park is today. After the game, the players would head to the Bellevue for 20-cent beers. Lorne has been a member of the Bellevue breakfast club for 30 years. It started in 1980 as a group of business and working people who would meet every morning and take turns buying each other breakfast. To encourage generosity, Bud McLeod created a trophy to honour anyone who spent more than $50 on breakfast. The mix of songs and suds and a late closing time of 2:30 a.m. gave the Bellevue a bit of a reputation. But Betsy doesn’t remember it that way. “I’d say, ‘Hey, listen. We can do this two ways. I can get really mad and tell you to go away. Or I can say hey, I’ll walk you to the door and we’ll part as friends.’” And she said usually the customers would smile and say, “See you tomorrow, Betsy!” Nostalgia day happens this Saturday at the Bellevue with live music, old photographs, speeches, and more.

New pharmacies may be banned House destroyed by fire Public hearing is slated for June 25 BY ADRIAN MACNAIR Mission Record

Council moved towards banning new pharmacies from the downtown core with the passing of first and second reading of a text amendment to the zoning bylaw Tuesday night. The rezoning application amendment to remove “pharmacy” and “medical clinic” from the core commercial downtown one zone (CCD1) now heads to a

public hearing June 25. “Revitalization of downtown is a major issue we identified in our core review of what we wanted to do,” said Mayor Ted Adlem, in a move that would appear to block the application of a proposed pharmacy at the site of the old community policing centre on First Avenue. But the applicants of Life Pharmacy Inc., who were present at the council meeting, seemed baffled as to the decision. Speaking to The Record, pharmacist Nanda Sanbandma, said they believe an unfounded rumour they would be dispensing marijuana is responsible for the decision. He said the application is for a

walk-in clinic and pharmacy, providing vaccines, a diabetes clinic, heart clinic, and prescription drugs, including methadone. The location is optimal for would-be customers, since other pharmacies are far from one another, he added. He said they will now be forced to pursue a legal remedy, though they would not elaborate on what that meant. Council, meanwhile, indicated support for a public hearing to decide whether the ban would ultimately be supported by residents. “I think this is an issue we’ll hear clearly from the public on,” said Coun. Dave Hensman.

Mission firefighters battled a stubborn house fire for about six hours Saturday afternoon on Richards Avenue. The crews were called shortly before noon, with firefighters from station one, three and North Fraser on scene helping control the fire. Fire Chief Ian Fitzpatrick said an investigation showed the point of origin was the bedroom, and the fire was accidental, but offered no confirmation on what started the blaze. No one was injured.

Smoke alarms work Local fire crews were sent to the 9200-block of Hayward Street Monday night for a kitchen fire. Fitzpatrick said the smoke alarm alerted the parents in the home to a frying pan that had been left on the stove. The contents burned and caught the kitchen on fire, and the homeowner tried to extinguish it with a garden hose but was overcome with smoke. Firefighters kept the damage contained to the kitchen, which is a write-off, said Fitzpatrick. The family is fully insured. “This again proves that smoke alarms truly do save lives,” said the chief.

BY JASON ROESSLE The second annual Cycling4Diversity started Tuesday morning at 8 a.m. with a replanting of a vandalized tree at Griner Park. A team of riders, lead by Mission’s Ken Herar, gathered at the Cherry Avenue park for the ceremony, which also drew MP Randy Kamp, and Mission Mayor Ted Adlem. The trip will see the cadre stop at 40 venues in nine cities, ending in Victoria at the B.C. Legislature on May 25. There are seven core riders who will do the entire journey, and a number of others who will join the ride in their respective cities and do a portion. You can follow the team’s trip through Facebook. OPINION

Published and printed by Black Press Ltd. at Mission at 33047 First Ave., V2V 1G2

Here comes the PST The provincial government is bringing back the provincial sales tax. The harmonized tax, and specifically the way it came about, was so reviled that a majority of voters were quite prepared to bring back the PST. This despite the fact the PST is not nearly as efficient and does not come with the tax credits the HST does. Voters weren’t even swayed by a provincial promise to reduce the HST to 10 per cent, which would be two per cent lower than the combined GST and PST. The province had no one to blame but itself, although that hasn’t stopped it from blaming leaders of the Fight HST campaign, the media, rebellious citizens and the NDP. While the government’s new PST bill does not specify what goods and services will be exempt from PST, Finance Minister Kevin Falcon said the exemptions will be similar to those under the old PST. The list of goods and services to be exempted will be published as a regulation, making it easier for the government to adjust the list of exempt items. This naturally has raised suspicion, as the Liberals’ record on the HST has been a long series of broken promises. But the entire HST exercise was beneficial in several respects. It showed that citizens have the power to put limits on governments that exceed their mandates. There was no promise of an HST in the 2009 election. Two months later, it was government policy. B.C. referendum law enabled citizens to overthrow this reversal in policy. The HST debacle caused one premier to leave office and may yet cause the defeat of the government. Future governments should be more cautious in going against public will, and refusing to listen to reasonable concerns. – Nanaimo News-Bulletin

Premier bitten by pest problem P remier Christy Clark has a new political problem buzzing around her office. A year ago, the newly appointed premier was looking to change the channel for an unpopular government grappling with the fallout of the harmonized sales tax. Newly appointed NDP leader Adrian Dix was touting an idea that is all the rage with urban folks, a ban on “cosmetic pesticides.” All the better B.C. communities already have one, starting with Clark’s old stomping ground of Port Moody in 2003. So she figured she’d better run to the front of this parade, swipe a popular policy from the opposition and do something to redefine the BC Liberal Party after the taxcutting, regulation-repealing decade of Gordon Campbell. But first an all-party committee would hold hearings around the province, chaired by Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett. Bennett presented the committee’s report last week, and one could see what was coming. Bennett is the rifletoting outdoorsman who re-

cently called on his government to abandon the carbon tax, saying it’s silly to keep pretending B.C. can change the world’s climate. Bennett concluded after 10 months of hearings that the public aversion to common lawn and garden herbicides is based on “chemophobia” that flourishes due to scientific illiteracy. That statement is both politically dangerous and absolutely correct. I first covered this issue in the Okanagan 25 years ago, when environmentalists fought the use of Roundup by the forests To ministry to knock down brush and promote new trees. The evidence boils down to this: these complex organic compounds break down in a short period to simpler, common components that pose no threat. Thus, with buffer zones around watercourses and temporary entry restrictions, they are safe. Unfortunately, most people

know little or nothing about chemistry and refuse to believe this. We have parents turning their backs on routine immunization because of superstitions about vaccines. We have people panicked about imaginary health effects of smart meters, egged on by shoddy, sensationalist media reporting. The parallels between local government responses to smart meter hysteria and this scientifically ignorant push against “pesticides” is telling. As Bennett put it, when someone m becomes convinced her child is at risk, “that mum is pretty darn compelling when she goes to council.” The committee sought advice from Health Canada, whose scientists approve conditions of use for chemicals. Health Canada representative Lindsay Hansen said B.C. was the first province to ask for its advice,

despite the fact that most provinces have imposed bans. These bans are political, not public safety measures, University of Guelph toxicologist Keith Solomon told MLAs. The committee also learned that “cosmetic” use accounts for only five per cent of pesticide use. Most of it is in agriculture, forestry and commercial pest control, with no ban proposed. MLAs in farming areas signalled their concern over the effect of this urban gesture politics. Backyard fruit trees go unsprayed and pests spread to orchards and fields. We have large areas of agricultural land reserve, but 85 per cent of the people who live in those areas don’t farm. The NDP is content to fan public fear and ignore evidence, as with smart meters and oil pipelines. The premier has a choice here. She can do the popular thing, or the right thing. YOUR VIEWS

A progressive community welcomes business Editor, The Record: Re: Council may nix drive-thru ban bylaw, May 10 edition. I applaud the mayor and council’s recent motion to repeal antidrive-thru bylaw 5050. This bylaw was enacted in 2009 and from my perspective, it was done without adequate public consultation. This is an ill-conceived, irrational, and anti-business bylaw that in the long run has resulted in more harm than good.

In regards to the environmental impact of drive-thrus, I believe the case to be overstated. The reasoning for the current bylaw is based on the assumption that because automobiles are idling in drive-thrus, then drivethrus must therefore be bad. That assumption, in my view, is patently false. It is argued that the exhaust from idling has a negative impact on air quality. Idling, according to current research, contributes to 0.2 per

cent of all greenhouse gas emissions in Canada, and drive-thrus are a very small percentage of that. According to current data, greenhouse gas emissions from a vehicle using a drive thru are less than five percent of those from a typical 30-minute commute. If we did not have drive-thrus, you would end up with customers congested in the parking lot. You would still have cars idling and turning their engines on and

off again, which would create more emissions, ultimately defeating the initial purpose. In addition, the absence of a drive-thru would necessitate a larger parking lot which implies more asphalt, more water runoff, and consequently more environmental implications. Drive-thrus are a necessity for many people. The elderly, families with small children, and others, such as the disabled, who have a hard

As an avid racing and motorcycle enthusiast, I find it rather ironic the municipality supports a raceway that, by its very nature, results in the production of countless quantities of greenhouse gas emissions annually while at the same time placing a prohibition on drive-thrus. Editor, The Record: Re: Patience during transition appreciated, May 10 edition. BC Hydro is right that British Columbians have been patient. For over a year now they’ve brought forward varied concerns about smart meters and borne the fact that the BC government refused to subject the program to the oversight of the BC Utilities Commission. They’ve faced the reality of having no real opt-out provision. But even farther back there’s a group that’s been even more patient: meter readers. Since 2008 they have waited for the government and BC Hydro to come up with a transition plan for their jobs, knowing their years of institutional knowledge is invaluable to our public utility. When that failed to happen they asked to meet with Minister Rich Coleman or the premier. The

Sumas First Nation carvers have nearly completed two 18-foot handcarved house posts to be unveiled at Fraser River Heritage Park, May 26. The carvings are the product of a $200,000 grant from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission to create a positive, commemorative monument as a celebration of reconciliation between residential school survivors and the Catholic Church. The Sumas band in Abbotsford, Leq’a:mel band in Mission, St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, and North Fraser Community Church applied jointly for the funds to begin a healing process from the legacy of the St. Mary’s residential school that existed in Fraser River Heritage Park. “Finishing will be a sad day because we’re here six days a week, eight to 10 hours a day for the past three months,” said Raphael Silver, who carved the house posts with his father, Ray.

Raphael Silver is one of the carvers who worked on this house post, which will be erected at Fraser River Heritage Park on Saturday. ADRIAN MACNAIR PHOTO

Because of the sheer amount of work involved, the Silvers solicited Mike Epp’s help, a professional native carver from Matlakatla near Prince Rupert who grew up in Matsqui. A trio of Sumas apprentices will help also. “I didn’t really want

them to think of it as a job, I wanted them to think of it as a learning experience,” said Silver, 30, who has been carving since he was five and is a former artist-in-residence for the Abbotsford School District. He crafted the origi-

nal design for the house posts, but received input from the other carvers. The carvings incorporate healing symbols, with two salamanders, a dancer with a mask, and two salmon, all important to Sto:lo mythology, said Silver. Each post represents the supporting poles that would go in the sides of a traditional longhouse, while a 20-foot-long flat section will connect the two to represent the rafters. “It’s kind of fitting that we carved these in our long house,” he said. The tree they used is a massive 450-year-old red cedar from Powell River. Installing the finished work isn’t easy. The engineering will be $12,000, and raising the poles will cost another $6,000. He is scrambling now to ensure the foundations will be ready to install the poles in time. But more than showcasing the artwork, it is the symbolic reconciliation between two groups with a wounded history that is important, he said. The ceremony happens at noon.

Water meeting May 24 at Leisure Centre The Abbotsford/Mission Water and Sewer Commission (AMWSC) is hosting a public meeting at the Leisure Centre May 24 from 6-8 p.m. to discuss the municipalities’ joint water system needs. AMWSC members and staff will be available to speak about water source options and conservation programs. This is the fifth of six meetings that have taken place over the past few weeks, and the final one held in Mission. Attendees will be handed a pad of sticky notes when they come to the meeting, which can then be posted on boards around the room, explained Tracy Kyle, Abbotsford’s director of water. The notes are kept from each meeting, allowing people to see the comments and suggestions already made. Kyle said the AMWSC

is hoping to gather information, and collect and share ideas that may determine the future of the water system. Kyle said another public meeting will take place sometime in June to present all of the ideas and comments received during the previous information sessions. The water commission will then be presented with a report based on those meetings in July. The AMWSC maintains the bulk of the water supply system which includes two surface sources — Cannel Lake and Norrish Creek — and the treatment systems at each source, and the trunk water mains from these sources to the District of Mission water system. Information is available at www.ourwatermatters. ca or e-mail waterconsultation@abbotsford.ca.

11 years, said his protein levels doubled in two years. “It was enough of a warning sign to get a biopsy,” he said. The biopsy came back positive for cancer. Erikson was lucky. It was early stage cancer. He had surgery — one of three options available to him — and “four weeks later, I was swinging a golf club,” he said, now six years in remission. Some men, however, are not so lucky. In Canada, it’s estimated over one million men have prostate cancer, and approximately one in six men will be diagnosed with the disease in their

lifetime, making it the second leading cause of cancer death in Canadian men. While it’s believed approximately 90 per cent of cases can be cured with early detection, prostate cancer awareness is still lacking, and men are still shying away from getting pre-screened. The second annual Westcoast Motorcycle Ride to Live is working to change that. On May 27, motorcyclists from all over the Fraser Valley will be hitting the roads in support of prostate cancer. “We wanted to do something to fight this disease and get the word out for

guys to get checked out,” said event spokesperson Roy Hafeli, who resides in Mission and lost his father to prostate cancer seven years ago. The poker-run ride will travel through Chilliwack, Rosedale, Agassiz, Mission, Langley and Cloverdale, ending at the Fraser Downs Racetrack where a vintage car show will ensue. Throughout the ride, motorcyclists will be sporting a white prostate cancer flag, and all proceeds raised will go to prostate cancer research and supports for men diagnosed with the disease. “We found that this

was an area that was lacking in support,” said Hafeli. And yet, “there are some amazing doctors and researchers in the Vancouver area doing cutting edge stuff for prostate cancer.” The Westcoast Ride to Live is on May 27. Registration is $25 online at www.ridetolive.ca. Pre-registration can also be done on May 26 at Mountainview Harley, or starting at 7 a.m. at WalMart, before the ride. The ride starts at 9 a.m. Organizers hope to raise $200,000. For more information, visit the website www. ridetolive.ca.

Intertribal powwow returns to Mission BY ADRIAN MACNAIR Mission Record

[Photo credits: powwow folder in pix for this An intertribal powwow will take place at Cherry Hill elementary on Saturday, marking the first time it has been held in the school system since 1999. The É-mâmawohkamâtotan Intertribal powwow, meaning “everyone working together” in Cree, will feature aboriginal dancers and drummers from the prairies and the Sto:lo people of the Fraser Valley. The slogan for the powwow is Qepóthet Ye Mestiyexw, which means “bringing people together” in Halkemalem, the Sto:lo language.

“The reason we stepped back a bit from doing the powwows was because the Sto:lo people needed to more establish the culture of the area in the schools,” said Kathy James, an event organizer who has a mixed heritage of Cree, Blackfoot, Anishnabe and English. The idea of having a powwow in the Mission School District came from a parent of a former student from Cherry Hill Elementary who approached principal Daryl Anderson. He liked the idea and asked James to help coordinate it with co-chairs Lisa and John Miller, all of whom have volunteered their time. “We have an achievement contract and an agreement with the province that we’ve undertaken to really sup-

port our aboriginal kids and families as much as we possibly can,” he said, adding 14 per cent of the student population is aboriginal. Each child participating in the powwow will come from communities that designate them as “royalty.” To become royalty the children enter a contest with a talent, whether it be dancing, singing, poem recital or drumming. Dancers are judged on their regalia as well as their dance style. Contestants will get extra points for selling raffle tickets, helping out at the powwow, and any positive role modelling they do during the event. There are several categories for children under 19, adults from 19-50, and then Elders.

The host drum sings the main songs, like the Grand Entry, the Retreat, Flag Song, and any other category they are called upon to sing. “The most important part of this pow wow is to bring the youth, their families and the community together to share,” said James. The first grand entry begins at 1 p.m. There will be a dinner break from 5-6:45, featuring traditional coastal First Nations hand-drumming. The second grand entry takes place at 7 p.m. and dancing will continue until 9:30-10. Admission is by donation.

Pregnant woman in collision with APD cruiser A Mission woman who is eight months pregnant was in a crash involving an Abbotsford Police cruiser on its way to an emergency call on Sunday afternoon. According to police, the cruiser was southbound on Riverside Street, and had its emergency lights and sirens activated. It was a marked Ford Crown Victoria. The officer, a two-and-ahalf year member of the APD, was responding to an emergency call that came in at 2:18 p.m.. The call was a singlevehicle rollover accident in which the driver of a Toyota 4Runner was trapped inside the SUV, at Sumas Way and Highway 11. The police vehicle approached a red light at Riverside Street and Harris Road, was unable to come to a complete stop and continued into the intersection. An Audi A6, driven by a 28-yearold expectant mother from Mission, was westbound on Harris Road with the green light in that same intersection. The Audi collided with the rear driver’s side of the police vehicle. Both the driver and her 17-year-old female passenger did not appear injured, but were examined as a precaution. The police officer was also not hurt. The driver of the 4Runner, a 37-yearold woman from Abbotsford, was able to get out of her vehicle safely. This cruiser collision is being investigated by the APD. Const. Ian MacDonald said the reasons the cruiser could not stop at the intersection will be given following a detailed response from the officer and work by the department’s traffic reconstructionists. However, he said wet conditions likely contributed to the accident. Several witnesses were on scene and provided statements to police. Police would like to appeal to any witnesses who have not yet come forward to contact the Abbotsford Police at 604859-5225.

The BC Liberal majority on a legislative committee has recommended against a province-wide ban on cosmetic pesticide use, after a year of hearing from farmers, foresters, environmental organizations and interested citizens. Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett chaired the committee whose four BC Liberal members outvoted three NDP members calling for a province-wide ban on common household herbicides, insecticides and fungicides used for visual effect. The majority recommended that retail sales should be treated similar to tobacco, kept out of sight and available only by request from someone with training in how to use the chemicals. Bennett said the most compelling testimony came from a representative of Health Canada, which approves such products for use across the country. The committee was told that B.C. was the first province to ask Health Canada before considering such a ban, and that imposing one would be a political rather than a public health choice, Bennett said. Bennett noted that only five per cent of pesticide application is by household

users, using products diluted 100 times or more below the level that shows effects in the most sensitive animal species. The widespread belief that common lawn and garden products cause harm when used as directed is based on “chemophobia” and a lack of scientific literacy, Bennett said. “The majority of the committee concluded that we could not justify secondguessing the 350 scientists who work at Health Canada,” Bennett said. NDP environment critic Rob Fleming noted that Premier Christy Clark formed the committee after publicly agreeing with NDP leader Adrian Dix that the cosmetic pesticide ban should be enacted. A province-wide ban would equalize a patchwork of municipal restrictions around the province and stop retail sales to the public, he said. The committee’s recommendations go against up to 80 per cent of public opinion, and would leave B.C. “dead last” in provincial regulations, Fleming said. Bennett said he discussed the recommendations with Clark before she left on a trade mission to Asia, and she offered no objections. Cabinet could still overrule the committee and impose a ban, which he acknowledged would be much more politically popular.

Young Voices speak at the art gallery The Mission Art Gallery is displaying the work of Mission high school students between now and June 9 that highlight messages of social responsibility. Called “Young Voices: Images and words from our Youth,” the show has been juried already and will run an award presentation and meet and greet on Saturday, May 2, at 1 p.m. The artwork from Hatzic and Heritage Park secondary students is divided into three categories. There is photographic poster art, collaborative murals (with up to eight students participating in one mural) and collage art. Some of the pieces are light and inspiring, while others can be dark and thought-provoking, especially the ones highlighting body image and drug abuse. The show’s theme is what young people (aged 14-18) think about what the message of social responsibility means. The work was juried by community members. The Mission Art Gallery is at 33529 First Ave.

Hiking season is here! What a great time to get out and enjoy the wonderful trail system in the Municipal Forest. The District of Mission manages 10 trails of various lengths, degrees of difficulty, and different uses just a short drive north of the city. Trails include: • Hayward Reservoir: Hiking only, moderate • Red Mountain: Multi-use, moderate to strenuous • Bear Mountain: Multi-use, moderate to strenuous • Saunders: Hiking only, easy • Steelhead Trails: Multi-use, moderate • Hoover Lake: Multi-use, moderate to strenuous • Devil’s Lake: Hiking only, moderate • Rolley Falls: Hiking, moderate with steep sections • Mt. The beautiful Hayward Reservoir Trail is a hiking-only trail that follows along the east side of Hayward Lake. BC Hydro parking is available off

There are trails throughout the District of Mission that are sure to challenge you. METRO

Dewdney Trunk Road at the north entrance, and off Wilson Road at the south entrance. The trail is approximately nine kilometres in length and features a lookout on spectacular Steelhead Falls, a floating bridge over Hairsine Inlet, and rustic picnic tables and benches along the way. Try just going

half way if you have limited time. An average hiker could expect to complete the nine km hike in 2.5 to 3.5 hours. You can complete a loop of the trail by crossing the dams and joining up with the BC Hydro Railway trail on the west side, for a total hike of approximately 17 kilometres.

Adhere to basketball hoop policy If you have a basketball hoop located at the roadway, please ensure it complies with the District of Mission Boulevard Landscaping Policy which states that basketball hoops are permitted on the boulevard if they are set back a minimum of 2.5 metres from the edge of

pavement or curb and one metre from the inside edge of sidewalks. If the basketball hoop is not located properly on the boulevard, you may be asked to remove it and non-compliance may result in a fine and/or removal by city staff at your expense.

Works crews appreciate motorists slowing down in construction zones In celebration of National Public Works Week, May 20-26, District staff would like to thank Mission residents for slowing down and obeying the signs while driving through construction zones. The spring and summer months are busy for the local public works crews. We thank you for your patience with the ongoing work on Grand Street. The storm sewer pipeline was replaced on Grand Street between 11 Avenue and Orchid Avenue along with the replacement and addition of several catch basins to improve drainage. A new stretch of sidewalk will soon be placed along the west side of Centennial Park. Grand Street from First Avenue to Seventh Avenue will be paved in 2013 as several utility repairs will be continuing through this year. Major asphalt paving this season will be done along:

think outside the bottle

• Dewdney Trunk Road-Cade Barr Street to Ferndale Avenue • Keystone Avenue-Shaw Street to Aherne Place • Grand Street, Seventh Avenue to 14 Avenue Please consider the environment this summer: • Wash your car on the lawn. You not only wash your vehicle but water the lawn, greatly reducing the soapy water from draining down into catch basins, leading to our local fish bearing streams. • Love to garden? Why not place a rain barrel (or two) under a down spout along the side of your home. It’s a great way to catch and store rain water while helping to conserve Mission’s water supply and later, water your garden. See www. mission.ca for more information. • Never dump gas, oil or paint into a storm drain. If you change your car’s oil or coolant, dispose of it properly-see your Curbside Collection calendar for more information.

A dependable and safe water supply, like that provided to Abbotsford and Mission residents, is vital to the success of all communities. Abbotsford and Missionhave safe and secure regional water supply that continually exceeds the Canadian Drinking Water Standards Guidelines. Abbotsford Mission Water & Sewer Commission is offering a free tour of the Norrish Creek Water Treatment Plant. The water treatment plant is located 18km northeast of Mission and uses state-of-the-art filtration technology to deliver safe drinking water to the residents of Abbotsford and Mission.

What’s Happening in Mission

SPRINGTIME, MY FAVORITE SEASON God has given us the different seasons of the year for our enjoyment, and we should try to enjoy each and every month that we are blessed with. However, January and February are probably my least favorite months, because living in the Northeast, I associate these two months with colder weather and lots of snow. Since November has Thanksgiving and December has Christmas, I am really pretty content with the weather from March through December. March is the beginning of spring and even though in the past we have gotten some significant snowstorms during this month, we can look forward to warmer weather, longer days, and more sunshine. The Bible tells us to place our hope in God who generously gives us everything for our enjoyment; this includes the various seasons of the year. Also, St. Paul tells us that he has learned to be content with whatever situation he was in. So, next year I am going to try harder to enjoy January and February.

God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy. K.J.V.

song Call Me Maybe, which beat out Bieber himself on the U.K. charts, is up for Pop Video of the Year, Video of the Year, Favourite Video and International Video of the Year. The 26-year-old is currently working on her third studio album, and the first under Schoolboy Records, the label owned by Bieber’s manager Scooter Braun. Mission’s Fillion qualifies for BC Summer Games in three events

Team Canada beats China at UFV

Mission’s Bryce Fillion qualified for the BC Summer Games in 100 m dash, triple jump and long jump after earning first place in all three events at the Zone 3 trials held at McLeod Park in Langley last week.

Black Press

The Grade 9 Hatzic Secondary School student ran the 100 m in 11.91, a personal best, 11.12 m in triple jump, and 5.66 m in long jump. The Games will be in Surrey July 19-22.

BY DAN KINVIG It wasn’t an offensive masterpiece by any means, but the Canadian senior women’s basket-

ball team picked up a confidence-boosting victory over China on Friday as they gear up for Olympic qualifying. Team Canada won the rubber match of the

Jack Donohue International Classic, edging China 45-37 in a gritty, physical battle at the University of the Fraser Valley. Allison McNeill’s Ca-

nadian squad had won the opener of the exhibition series 78-66 at the Langley Events Centre on Wednesday, and China won the second game 67-51 at the Richmond Olympic Oval on Thursday. The fact the two teams were playing each other for a third time in three days manifested itself in a pair of ways on Friday. Both squads struggled offensively, particularly in the first half — the product of fatigue and familiarity. The game also had a relentlessly rugged feel to it. “It gets a tiny bit chippy because it’s like guarding your best friend for three days,” McNeill, the Canadian head coach, said afterward. “You kind of know them inside and out.” Testing themselves against a physical foe figures to serve Canada in good stead, though, as they prepare for the FIBA Olympic Qualification Tournament, which opens June 25 in Ankara, Turkey. The top five teams from that 12-team competition advance to the London Olympics. “It’ll be grind-it-out affairs there, for sure, it’ll be physical,” McNeill noted. “You’re going to clutch and grab and do whatever you can to get to the Olympics.” Generating offence was a grind for both teams in the early going — Canada led 11-10 after the first quarter, and 19-16 after the second. The Canadians made just 37.5 per cent of their attempts from the floor in the half, while China shot 32 per cent. Canada hit its stride after the break, opening the third quarter on a 10-2 run, with Kim Smith — a product of Heritage Park Secondary in Mission — swishing a key three-pointer in that spurt. The Canucks stretched the lead to as many as 14 points in the third, but China battled back to within eight early in the fourth. But a putback by Smith and a trey from point guard Teresa Gabriele — another Heritage Park grad — helped Canada regain control. Smith picked up player of the game honours after leading Canada with 12 points and eight See GABRIELE Page 34

NATIONALS Edmonton’s John Evanchuk is bringing his top alcohol funny car to Mission this weekend for the Lordco B.C. Nationals. BILL JEFFERY/SPEEDZONE MAGAZINE

Lordco B.C. Nationals this weekend at MRP BY DEAN MURDOCH Record contributor

The Lordco B.C. Nationals blast down Mission Raceway Park this weekend for one of the biggest events of the motorsport calendar. More than $3 million worth of race cars will be competing in the Lucas Oil Drag Racing series for divisional, regional and national points, plus their share of the $150,000 purse, and over $520,000 in championship points. This massively popular annual event is coinciding with Mission Raceway Park’s 20th, and the B.C. Custom Car Association’s 60th anniversaries. The featured classes are top alcohol dragsters (TAD) and funny cars (FC), and these 260 mph, 3,000 horsepower beasts will overload your senses. Five Canadian teams will battle (four in TAD and one in TAFC) in the two fast classes. In TAD, Hugh Ridley is the Canadian favourite. Ridley will have last year’s event champion Ray Martin muscling the car down the quarter-mile, and this car is capable of being near the top of qualifying. The Sereda “Plum Crazy” TAD team is from Edmonton, and owner/driver

Greg Sereda is looking for his career best finish this weekend. The prohibited favourite in TAD is Joey Severance, who was the defending Division 6 champion last year and finished fourth in world national points in 2012. A new driver, Clif Bakx, will debut this weekend in TAD, and Ken Gilmore Motorsports have brought in Greg Hunter as the new driver for the Calgary based TAD team. This is a car with a lot of potential but mechanical issues have kept the team from running consistently. In TAFC, a half-dozen Americans will make it tough for Edmonton’s John Evanchuk, but with tuner Bill Moore making the horsepower, John should give the U.S. drivers some concern. Brian Hough, Steve Gasparelli and Clint Thompson are the top picks from south of the border. Qualifying starts Friday with sportsman classes including stock and super stock, top sportsman, top dragster and comp eliminator. Twenty degree dry weather is forecast, so many national records could be set. For more information go to www. missionraceway.com and www.speedzonemagazine.com for results.

For Gabriele, this Olympic campaign is particularly meaningful because it will be her last. The 33-year-old veteran is the lone holdover from the last time Canada qualified for the Olympics, back in 2000. While many of her teammates play professionally overseas, the 5’5” point guard works out on her own locally. She works for her family’s bread business, stocking shelves at Costco and Walmart in the early mornings before devoting the rest of her day to training. Gabriele plans to retire from the national team this year — ideally after a trip to London — and focus on a new career as a certified professional trainer. “There would be nothing better than to be able to go out with an Olympic experience,” said Gabriele, who scored five points and added three assists in a game-high 34 minutes on Friday. “I think that would be an amazing way to end my career.” McNeill joked that

Mission’s Teresa Gabriele competes with Team Canada. GARY AHUJA PHOTO

she’ll try to talk Gabriele into staying on with the national team, but she doesn’t think it’ll work. “She’s meant an awful lot to this program over a great many years, and she is really the gold standard for commitment to the national program in this country,” McNeill said. “In Canada, when you finish university, you’re 22 and you’re done. At the last World Championships, we were the only country there without a domestic pro league for women. “So Teresa’s had to do it on her own, where a lot of players stop playing. But I think she’s inspired others to stay with it longer. She’s married, she’s going to have a family, but you can do both. “I think she’s inspired a whole generation of young girls. Not to mention that she’s a fantabulous player – still.”
