Rockin’ River, Mission Fest heat up district

It’ll be a hot weekend in Mission as Rockin’ River Music Festival and downtown’s Mission Fest sizzle with music and fun.

Rockin’ River, the Lower Mainland’s largest country music affair, begins today (Thursday) and runs until Saturday at Mission Raceway Park.

The annual event started four years ago and has grown annually.

This time around, the festival will be stretched out over three days, instead of two.

“We added a kick-off party on Thursday,” said Kenny Hess, a performer and organizer with Rockin

River, who hopes fans will enjoy a taste of the show on opening day and return for more Friday and Saturday. Pre-ticket sales indicate there will be about 2,500 people at the festival each day, but Hess is hoping that number will be doubled.

“People like to show up at the last minute.”

The list of performers on Thursday include Aaron Pritchett, Karen Lee Batten, Brent Lee and Tyler Whelan.

There will be a dance floor and lots of games throughout the festival. Proceeds from the games will benefit local charities, said Hess.

Bachman and Dwight Yoakam perform Friday, and Shane Chisholm, The Matinee, Stacey McKitrick, Ridley Bent, One More Girl, George Canyon and Blue Rodeo will take the stage Saturday.

They’re all great entertainers, said Hess, who couldn’t say enough about Yoakam, who will be closing Friday’s show.

“He’s fantastic,” said Hess. “He plays one hit after another. Randy Bachman has more hits than anyone can imagine and George Canyon is one of my buddies.”

Hess has opened for Yoakam in the past and has written songs with Bachman. He has also known Canyon for close to 20 years when they were both trying to find their

wings in the music industry.

Olympic medal mission accomplished

Mission’s Brent Hayden last Wednesday finally captured the one swimming honour that had eluded him twice before.

The amicable pool powerhouse whose likeness graces a Mission Leisure Centre wall, fought off years of disappointment and secured Olympic immortality as he swam to a bronze in the 100m freestyle.

About 150 people — who cheered, whistled and even cried — crammed into the Leisure Centre lobby Aug. 1 to watch the event.

Clocking in a time of 47.80, it was good enough to stand on the podium in London, England alongside gold medal winner Nathan Adrian from the U.S., who posted a time of 47.52, and silver medallist James Magnussen of Australia (47.53).

Hayden had struggled at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, failing to qualify for the 100m free final after winning gold at the world championships the previous year.

The bronze represented the Canadian swim team’s first podium finish of the

London Games.

“With 25 metres left to go, right when it started to hurt, I told myself, ‘Brent, this is going to be your last 100 freestyle ever,’” he said in a post-race CTV interview. “’Just go for it.’ And I did.

“I’ve got way too many people to thank, and I know there’s a bunch of people out in Mission right now at the Leisure Centre watching me.

Knowing they all came out to watch is a huge inspiration for me.”

The packed lobby of the Leisure Centre exploded with cheers every time Hayden’s picture was up on screen.

The lively crowd gradually got louder and louder after Hayden’s race began and peaked when he touched the wall and a bronze medal was secured.

Dozens of Mission Marlins Swim Club members — the club with which Hayden began his competitive swimming journey — brought handmade signs and their voices to cheer on their hometown hero.

The children are very excited, said Shannon Key, a Marlins coach before Hayden’s swim.

“Some got up and watched his heats at 2 a.m.”

The Marlins are inspired now more than ever in their sport, Key added.

Seven-year-old Hailey Pearson, who just started swimming with the Marlins this year, said she was excited to watch Hayden swim and seeing him accomplish so much makes her want to try for the world stage.

For longtime swim parents like Linda Ziefflie — whose three children are all Marlins and whose husband, Brent, was one of Hayden’s first coaches — the medal win cemented Hayden’s standing as an exceptional role model for the younger swimmers.

She added that a photo

of when Hayden was about seven years old, gangly and awkward, was plastered on the family fridge for years to show that “even little uncoordinated kids could be a champion.”

Five days after Hayden’s medal winning performance, he officially announced his retirement from the sport.

He leaves behind an impressive litany of international swimming honours: five World Championship medals, eight Commonwealth Games medals and eight Pan Pacific Championships medals over 10 years.

Women’s bball team falls to U.S. The Canadian women’s basketball team ran into a juggernaut in the Olympic quarter-finals, falling 91-48 to the top-ranked Americans on Tuesday.

The U.S. came in having won 38 consecutive Olympic games,

including the last four gold medals, and they dominated the Cinderella Canadians, who had advanced to the quarter-finals for the first time.

Mission native Kim Smith turned in another team-leading

offensive performance, scoring 13 points.

Fellow Mission product Teresa Gabriele notched two points and four assists in what was likely the final game of her international career.

The event begins at 10 a.m. and runs until 5 p.m. A stage will be set up by Tim Hortons and opening ceremonies start at noon.

First Avenue will be closed to vehicle traffic, except for

those entered in the car show at Grand Street. There is only room for 75 cars, so it’s first come first serve. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. and is $10.

There will be seven bouncy castles, a petting zoo and pony rides. There will also be a kids chalk zone by Magnolia’s, and the first 200 children ages 12 and under at the event will receive a goody pack with sidewalk chalk, bubbles, crayons, stickers and more.

“Even though Mission downtown is opening its doors, we

couldn’t do it without community support,” said Cushnie, who is expecting 7,000 to 10,000 visitors downtown this weekend. Last year 5,000 attended.

A few businesses on Second Avenue are also participating, including the Farmers’ Market, which will be extending its hours, and the Mission Community Archives, where will be a strawberry tea and ice cream.

Mission RCMP sergeant facing charges, internal investigation

A Mountie from Mission is facing charges in connection with an off-duty fight outside a Pitt Meadows bar.

Sgt. Miriam Orynthia Jean Dickson, 43, faces two counts of assaulting a peace officer and one count each of resisting arrest and causing a disturbance.

Charges against the former media spokesperson for the Mission RCMP were sworn last Tuesday in Port Coquitlam Provincial Court.

The charges stem from an “altercation” that took place outside Rooster’s Country Cabaret shortly after 2 a.m. Sunday, June 3.

Two uniformed RCMP officers, who were already patrolling the parking lot, intervened and tried to diffuse the situation, but were

allegedly assaulted by her.

She was arrested and taken to cells.

“Obviously I am disappointed with this alleged behaviour,” said Insp. Richard Konarksi, the officer in charge of the Mission detachment.

RCMP are conducting an internal investigation and Dickson is currently assigned to administrative duties.

She is scheduled to make a first appearance in court on Aug. 20.

In August 2009, Dickson (nee Booth) won the women’s bodybuilding competition at the World Police and Fire Games. She was then a sergeant with the RCMP’s “E” Division in Vancouver. Prior to that, she worked with Ridge Meadows RCMP in community policing.

A proposed classaction lawsuit alleging bullying and harassment against women in the RCMP got a high-profile champion on the first day

of hearings Thursday.

Valerie MacLean, an RCMP constable at Maple Ridge in the late 1970s and former head of the Better Business Bureau, said she’s joined the suit in an attempt to see justice and a fair hearing for the victims.

“We didn’t join to be harassed or be humiliated or be told that our career depended on us being friendly or having relations with our direct supervisors,” MacLean told reporters.

She said she complained to other officers

when her supervisor pressured her to be “friendly” in exchange for advancement, but nothing was done and she quit the force in 1979 after he gave her a poor assessment.

“Years later, nothing has changed,” MacLean said. “This systemic culture in the RCMP of harassment and not accepting these women as equals has to stop.”

Lawyers expect a long legal battle with the RCMP on behalf of potentially hundreds of women who allege abusive behaviour by other Mounties while serving in the force.

It’s expected to take until sometime in 2013 for a ruling on whether the proposed class-action lawsuit will be certified.

At the centre of the case is former Nanaimo RCMP Const. Janet Merlo, whose claim alleges she was the victim of “persistent and ongoing gender-based discrimination and harassment” by male Mounties

at the detachment and that the RCMP did nothing to stop it.

Jason Murray, one of Merlo’s lawyers, said more than 200 other women – current and former Mounties – have stepped forward to join the potential class action since Merlo’s initial claim was filed.

“We’ve heard from women ranging from constables up to the senior ranks of the force,” he said.

“There is a common thread amongst all of the women who have contacted us,” Murray said.

“They feel the RCMP has cultivated an atmosphere where discrimination against women happens where it shouldn’t and [the force] has not taken adequate steps to either avoid or fix the problem.”

The District of Mission is reorganizing to create more capacity, improve customer service and save money.

The restructuring will see some departments merge, and other positions eliminated.

The changes will cut 6.3 staff positions, but Mission’s Chief Administrative Officer Ken Bjorgaard says four are already vacant.

Positions being eliminated are: • manager of inspection services (v) • manager of restorative resolutions • deputy director of engineering • manager of environ-

mental services (v) • fire inspector and part time administrative position in the fire department • director of finance (v) *(v): vacant position The senior Facilities Foreman position is also vacant and will be eliminated.

The Planning Department will dissolve and be replaced with Development Services, which will have a branch for current planning and another for long-term and

special projects.

Some environmental services functions and the deputy director of engineering will also be transferred to the new department.

Mike Younie, the former manager of Environment Services, will head Development Services.

Directly under Younie will be the deputy director of development services, Barclay Pitkethly (formerly the deputy director of planning), and director of long-range planning and special projects Sharon Fletcher (formerly di-

rector of planning).

With this change, Fletcher can focus on longer term planning, such as building Mission’s waterfront, while allowing land developers to work with one department throughout their project, explained Bjorgaard, noting some engineering, and building licence functions will be handled by that depart-

ment too.

The Finance Department will now fall under Corporate Services and the new manager of finance, deputy treasurer/ collector, and purchasing/stores manager will all report to the deputy chief administrative officer.

The facilities and building maintenance functions, previously under

Parks, Recreation and Culture (PRC), will be transferred to Engineering and Public Works, and Social Development, previously under Corporate Administration, will be absorbed by PRC. As recommended in the core services review, the Restorative Resolutions Program (RRP) will be transferred from the district to the non-profit

sector. A request for proposal will be issued to take on RRP, said Bjorgaard, and the addition of a communications officer — suggested by the review — will have to be approved by council.

Council will also need to approve a proposed infrastructure engineer position for buildings and maintenance.

Bjorgaard says the two new positions will be funded from existing budgets and expects council will discuss the issue in an upcoming meeting.

Mission has not looked at its organizational structure in a long time, said Bjorgaard, who expects the changes will help staff work together and be more efficient.

That’s the spirit Every two years, once the Olympic torch is lit and the confetti from the opening ceremonies has been swept up, we begin to learn a little something about the human spirit.

And about human nature.

We’re blown away by what athletes can and do accomplish, often in the face of overwhelming odds.

National heroes are born every day for two weeks — even if the lifespan of that public ardour is painfully short.

Eventually, however, that impressive drive to give as much as it takes to win, clashes with a ‘win at any cost’ mentality.

We’ve already seen it in London, as four teams of badminton players did their best to throw their respective matches in an effort to draw easier partners in the next round.

Some commenters have defended it as an acceptable strategy.

What it was, in fact, was a disgraceful display of disrespect for their sport, the fans and the Olympics themselves.

Happily, though, it was but a small blight on what has otherwise so far been a fantastic show.

We’ve watched in awe as Mission’s Brent Hayden accomplished his lifelong Olympic dream and medalled in the 100 m freestyle last Wednesday, earning a bronze.

In addition to Kim Smith and Teresa Gabriele, who play on Canada’s basketball team, who are continuing to push for excellence in London.

Those are just the Mission examples — and only the ones we’ve witnessed so far.

Forget the Real Housewives of wherever. Never mind the pickers and the hoarders.

This is reality television at its best.

Pipeline posturing doesn’t help T he B.C. Liberal government is taking its new hard-line approach to federal environmental hearings on the Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline proposal in September.

Environment Minister Terry Lake has filed the B.C. government’s notice to crossexamine Enbridge, one of the world’s biggest pipeline operators. Lake outlined the “tough questions” B.C. representatives will ask about spill response capacity on land and sea, tanker escort tugboats, pipe wall thickness, and Enbridge’s sluggish response to a pipeline rupture in Michigan.

Premier Christy Clark’s demands for “world-leading” safety and spill response, as well as meeting the constitutional obligation to consult and accommodate aboriginal groups along the route, are mostly a statement of the obvious. Her call for a “fair share” of proceeds from exported oil to reflect B.C.’s risk has been assaulted from all sides.

Pipeline opponents seized on Clark’s suggestion that a major oil spill might be

tolerable if there was enough money in it for B.C. NDP leader Adrian Dix picked up the theme as he conducted his own belated tour of the proposed route to reiterate his opposition.

There had been earlier hints from Alberta that B.C. might need further rewards for the risk. But when Clark made the “fair share” demand public, Redford was moved to channel Margaret Thatcher, declaring: “The Premier of Alberta is not going to blink on royalties.” The lady’s not for blinking, but neither is To B.C.’s Iron Snowbird, as Preston Manning dubbed Clark this spring.

All this political theatre doesn’t amount to much. I’ll stand by my January prediction that the Enbridge proposal is unlikely to proceed, mainly due to the tangled state of aboriginal claims. Wealthy U.S. foundations that view the B.C. North Coast as their 500-year ecoexperiment will be happy to

help fund a decade of legal challenges, while continuing the media-spinning and protest support they are doing now.

Even if some way can be found to levy a B.C. tax on revenues from the Northern Gateway pipeline, it’s no solution. For one thing, it would confer an advantage to the Trans-Mountain pipeline that has been shipping Alberta oil to Burnaby and the U.S. for more than 60 years.

The competing expansion proposal

by Trans-Mountain’s current owner, Kinder Morgan, shows the inconm sistency of opposition to pipelines.

Does anyone really believe that a new pipeline built to the highest standards ever would be too dangerous, while a 60-year-old pipeline is acceptable?

Second Narrows to Stanley Park would be catastrophic to Vancouver’s environment and economy. Tankers have made that trip safely nearly 100 years, but the congested modern shipping lane offers more threat of collision, and clearing Burrard Inlet for near-daily tanker transits would disrupt the rest of B.C.’s shipping trade.

An Angus Reid poll last week showed as many as half of respondents remain openminded about the costs and benefits of new oil pipelines across B.C. Unlike B.C. politicians, they seem interested in learning more before making up their minds.

Dix and the NDP ran to the front of the anti-pipeline parade early, as they did with the carbon tax and other issues. Clark began the Northern Gateway discussion with a principled position to wait for the result of the federal review, but that’s apparently out the window with an election looming.

YOUR VIEWS Some coyotes will roam as a mated pair or solo Editor, The Record: Re: Coyotes plaguing dog walkers, Aug. 2 edition.

Just read the article about coyotes being a problem for dog wallkers and wish to add some information contrary to what Conservation Officer Service Sgt. Steve Jacobi said to his otherwise excellent advice in dealing with coyotes.

He said that they “generally work in packs and are never alone,” but I’ve seen otherwise plus heard others tell of lone coyote sightings.

A neighbour and her grandchildren were sitting on her front lawn when a coyote calmly trotted past them. Another time, I returned after dark from grocery shopping to see a lone coyote walking alone in our neighbourhood. The neighbour across the street saw a coyote leap over a four-foot fence and trot off.

And lastly, my son, returning home in the wee hours of the night from a cleaning job, wit-

nessed what he thought was a dog trotting across Cedar Street near 14 Avenue with something dangling in its mouth. When he got close, he said it was obviously a coyote and the dangling object was a dead cat. These four sightings occurred in the same residential area.

Dismiss those who harass others Editor, The Record: Re: Media reports of RCMP Cpl. Galliford’s legal action against the police for harassment.

The allegations made by Galliford paint an unattractive picture of a once highly respected police force.

The RCMP, like most other police forces in a free society is an armed force tasked with protecting the rights and safety of the general public,

or to use the RCMP’s own motto, “uphold the right” of the ordinary citizen.

During the normal performance of their duties, members of the force inevitably encounter life-threatening situations where total and unquestioning reliance on a partner can become a matter of survival.

Anything or anyone interfering with, or diminishing that cohesiveness of the force

has to reflect that principle, and in the interest of the safety of the other members of the group, has to be dismissed from that body.

Supt. Maria Nickel was partially right when she said that anyone aspiring to be a police officer has to have the inner strength for the job.

It is a fact of life that attractive people will be “hit on” by people whose ego needs a boost at someone

else’s expense.

At the same time there is a sharp divide between a single “hit” and ongoing moral and cohesion-destroying harassment.

Anyone who by harassing another member of the force destroys that cohesiveness should be dismissed immediately. Safety of the others demands it.

Communications function good High to have if district can afford it praise from Mighty Mouse Editor, The Record: Letters from ousted councillors Paul Horn and Mike Scudder are a further attempt by former politicians to rewrite history through rose-coloured glasses.

The results of a core review are but a snapshot and fodder for establishment of action plans.

The published results of the core services review indicate some areas the district is doing well and areas requiring improvements. But too much confusion, fear and controversy existed, each being exacerbated and not likely to go away.

The review was a sound business idea to try and establish a foundation.

Mr. Horn still does not get

it. Sadly, he takes one recommendation, again out of context and from his misguided perspective, robbing substance from the “call for re-establishment of a communications function.” Clearly, in context to a community need, clear communication is paramount and if affordable, a public relations officer is a valuable asset.

However, this was not the fact and the scenarios emerging were the previous council made and announced decisions, culminating most notably with the PSIT debacle. Hence, the public was aware of what was happening regardless of district statements to the contrary. This spawned perceptions of hiring a spin-doctor to presum-

ably get district opinion published in such a way as to get public favour for district decisions. The public, and presumably CRMG candidates, recognized this folly and all felt the position ought to be terminated.

Thus, returning to a public relations communication need, for the right reasons, may be evident and prudent, but it could be as simple as employing a person or retaining a public relations firm, as needed, to vet media releases, convene interviews or write scripts, as need arises.

Editor, The Record: As a five-time World record holder, triple Olympic medalist in swimming and International Swimming Hall of Fame member, I am reasonably qualified to say Brent Hayden’s performance winning bronze in the 100m freestyle just saved Swimming Canada’s butt.

People in Canada have to understand how hard it is to win an Olympic medal, and especially in high-profile events like swimming. It is one of the most difficult medals to win.

Winning a medal in any sport in the Olympics is a challenge, but if you look at the stats worldwide in the number of participants in swimming, to get on that podium has to be one of the hardest and most difficult to win. This makes Brent’s podium win even more impressive.

Brent’s performance in London 2012 just saved the swim program in Canada from being a dismal performance. To Brent I say you made me very proud today, not only as an exOlympic swimmer but as a Canadian.

So far the force has given no indication it is prepared to negotiate, he said.

“If the RCMP wants to fight tooth and nail, it will be a long process,” Murray said.

“If the RCMP wants to move forward quickly and make real change, the opportunity is there.”

Murray said he was troubled by the RCMP’s “mud slinging” response to the separate harassment lawsuit of former RCMP spokeswoman Cpl. Catherine Galliford.

The force denied her claims of abuse and sexual assault and painted her as an alcoholic who refused treatment.

RCMP spokesman Cpl. David Falls said the force is challenging the certification because it doesn’t meet the criteria of a class action, adding the allegations have not yet been heard in court and wouldn’t until and unless a class action is certified.

“The RCMP has a responsibility to protect itself against unproven and harmful allegations,” he said. “If, after investigation, there are cases found to have merit, the RCMP will give them

the appropriate consideration.”

Merlo worked for the RCMP in Nanaimo from 1991 to 2010.

Her allegations include that male officers tried to position her next to an inflatable naked female doll that was kept at the detachment.

Her claim recounts a barrage of insults, derogatory comments and sexual innuendo, sometimes with senior officers brandishing sex toys or claiming to her husband that they’d had sex with her.

Her pregnancy was also fodder for abuse, according to the claim, which says male officers ridiculed her ability to do her job while expecting and that an angry supervisor yelled at her when told she was pregnant.

Merlo claims she received unfair treatment – male Mounties could go on three-hour hockey games and got easier sick time and shift change arrangements than she did.

Helicopter spots pair of lost hikers A RCMP helicopter quickly located two young women who got lost while hiking in Golden Ears Provincial Park, near Maple Ridge, on Thursday.

The women — an 18-year-old girl from Langley and a 19-year-old friend from Mission — used a cellphone to call for help around 9:30 p.m. after they were unable to find a way back to the parking lot.

Ridge Meadows RCMP and Ridge Meadows Search and Rescue volunteers set up a command post at the entrance to the UBC Research Forest, at the north end of 232 Street.

Air One was called and the lost women were spotted by the pilot shortly after he flew over the area. Search and rescue volunteers were directed to their location and led the women out of

the forest.

“The girls, who are not experienced hikers, obviously did their homework and took all hiking essentials,” said Sgt. Dale Somerville.

The women had water, food, other clothing and a cellphone.

Although the hikers were prepared, police are warning others not to depend on modern technology alone.

“Quite often cellphones are not able to get a signal so it is very important that hikers notify a family member or a friend regarding their plans, and when they’re supposed to return,” said Somerville.

If you are hiking in unfamiliar areas, keep track of land marks and the surroundings. Knowing how to use a compass also helps.

Helping the Snowbirds fly

Flying with eight other pilots at up to 400 knots only a metre from each other requires an inordinate amount of talent and nerves.

But it also takes an entire team — including a born and raised Mission man — to get the Snowbird pilots into the air, and across the country for shows.

Thomas Edelson is a captain with the Canadian Forces and serves as the 431 Air Demonstration Squadron’s public affairs (PA) officer handling planning and logistics. Edelson and the rest of the 85-person unit will be across the river this weekend for the 50th anniversary Abbotsford International Airshow. “[The job] is busier than I thought it would be, and it’s also a pretty unique way to see the country,” said Edelson via phone.

While nine aircraft and pilots perform, the number 10 jet pilot serves as an announcer, and Edelson flies in the 11 Snowbird with the safety officer.

Edelson, 34, was a journalist and spent a summer working at The Mission Record and Abbotsford News in 2003.

Shortly after completing a course on military reporting, he went to Bosnia and was attached to a PA officer who showed him around.

“I saw the other side of the [military] coin. It is a large organization made up of professionals who all have common goals,” he said. “They have a mission-oriented focus, get to go interesting places and do things others can’t.”

Edelson had been working in Ottawa as an executive assistant to the 15 Wing Commander, and finishing up his PA training. When his class was asked who wanted to serve as the PA for the Snowbirds — which entails a two-year commitment — he was the only one who did not raise his hand.

“I wanted to go to an army base,” he explained.

But his superiors approached him afterwards and encouraged him to apply.

Audit shakes up B.C. legislature finances

The B.C. legislature’s internal finances are being dragged into the 21st century in response to a damning report from Auditor General John Doyle.

MLAs will start releasing detailed expense reports and conducting Legislative Assembly Management Committee meetings in public starting this month, Speaker Bill Barisoff announced after a hastily arranged meeting to respond to the audit.

Two new financial staff positions are being added to address what Doyle called “pervasive deficiencies” in basic financial accountability.

The audit found that MLA credit card bills were being paid without receipts, and the legislative assembly hasn’t produced financial statements despite a 2007 recommendation from the previous auditor general. Legislature bank records didn’t correspond with actual bank balances, and records for the gift shop and dining room don’t allow for efficient management.

Doyle said a future audit will look at the $119,000 annual allowance for MLA constituency offices, which Barisoff had asked to be exempted from the current examination. Transfer amounts and salary expenditures were verified, but other expense claims were not.

Barisoff and Clerk of the Legislative Assembly Craig James emphasized that the audit did not find any misappropriation of funds.

Doyle said he was unable to rule out fraud because the records aren’t complete enough to do so.

Senior MLAs for both parties sit on the management committee, which administers an annual budget of $62 million to run the legislature chamber, law clerks, library, security and other departments.

circling the wagons, resisting calls for accountability with regards to their skyrocketing expenditures,” he said.

Cummins called for Barisoff to resign for failing to get the management committee to intervene sooner, a

suggestion Barisoff dismissed as a product of the summer “silly season” where trivial items make the news.

Maximize the use Learn to be mosquito smart of your Rot Pot Since the Rot Pot was introduced in June of 2011, the amount of compost collected at the curb has increased dramatically.

The first six months of 2012, compared to the first six months of 2011, show a 58 per cent increase in compost collected at the curb, including both food and yard waste. For the first time in Mission’s documented history, June of this year also saw more compost than garbage collected at the curb. Keep up the great work, Mission residents, and please have a friendly chat with neighbours and friends who may not yet have come aboard with food waste composting, when the occasion arises.

Time flies, and while we’ve experienced another cool summer, and fall is approaching, barbecue season is not yet over. If you’ve experienced maggots or flies in your Rot Pot over the summer months, try placing leftovers in your Rot Pot immediately after

dinner, so that flies don’t have a chance to use them as their breeding grounds.

If your food waste has been left out, try placing it in a bag and keeping it in your freezer, then empty the bag into your Rot Pot on collection day. Frozen food waste does not smell, and as such, is also much less attractive to bears and other wildlife. Remember to always store all waste materials, including garbage, compost and recyclables, in a secure building or enclosure until the morning of collection day. Using liberal amounts of newspaper in your Rot Pot between layers of food waste also helps to reduce odour, liquids and cleaning effort.

If you’re looking to decrease your “wasteline” even further, consider purchasing reusable lunch packaging for the upcoming school/ work season. Make your own lunches and encourage your family members to bring food waste back home. You’ll save money on designer lunch combinations and feel good knowing that you’re part of the solution.

Mosquito control is carried out by the Fraser Valley Regional District. Emphasis is on controlling larvae within bodies of standing water using natural biological control methods.

Since mosquitoes require water to complete their development, removing any sources of standing water will reduce the number of places mosquitoes can live.

Dump out any tires, wheelbarrows, buckets or

children’s toys and change water in wading pools or bird baths weekly. Even blocked gutters and rain pipes can produce mosquitoes, so make sure these are cleared and flowing freely.

The health authority recommends the following measures to reduce the risk of being bitten by mosquitoes: • Use insect repellent containing DEET (10 per cent for children and up to 30 per cent for adults) when outdoors.

• Avoid mosquito laden areas during dawn and dusk.

• Wear loose, light colored clothing when outdoors including long-sleeved shirts and pants.

• Apply tight-fitting well maintained screens to doors and windows.

• Keep your lawn regularly mowed to decrease mosquito rest areas.

• Keep lawns, bushes and gardens well trimmed.

Back Door Slam returns to the Envision Twilight Concert Series at Fraser River Heritage Park on Friday, Aug. 10 from 7 to 8 p.m.

They’ve received rave reviews for their music all over the globe. Soaring vocals, strong harmonies, flying fiddle, swingin’ guitar, harmonica, bass, mandolin and washboard comprise their unmistakable sound.

Fiddle player Jennie Bice came west in search of other musicians driven enough to play the speed she wanted, and bold enough to try some of her ideas. Her recordings span many genres.

Joe Samorodin’s fretless and stand-up bass playing reflects the many rhythms that have crossed his path. He can turn the energy of a performance into a non-stop dance that often ends up in the audience.

West Coast Music Award nominee Kat Wahamaa has “a voice you can take a bath in” and plays a mighty fine mandolin. She has shared the

LOVE IS SO SWEET What great happiness comes from knowing that we are loved. And what pain and sorrow comes from knowing that someone’s love has been withdrawn from us. Love is the cement that binds us together, as families, as friends, and even as societies. Wednesday, Aug. 15 The Envision Twilight Concert Series welcomes The Hornets on Wednesday, Aug. 15 from 7 to 8 p.m.

The Hornets formed in 1975 as a Beatles tribute band. They play classic rock with original arrangements and key so the sound is the same one you fell in love with when you first heard the music.

It’s a family affair for founding member and band leader Chris Marr who plays guitar, piano, drums, bass, banjo and vocals. His son, Keith, joined the band 17 years ago, and he also plays bass, guitar and vocals.

Brother-in-law Norman Hyde, on lead guitar and vocals, joined 15 years ago, and rounding out the group is drummer Len Hall.

The concert partner for this evening is Leslie Redburn HomelifeGlenayre Realty.

“Envision has been proud to support the Envision Twilight Concert Series for the past 12 years,” says Carol Hamilton, branch manager at Envision Financial’s Mission location.

The Art in the Park program continues with a variety of visual artists presenting their work.

Mission Marlins qualify for swim provincials

Swimmers from the Mission Marlins swim club had a strong showing at the Fraser Valley Regional Championships this past weekend in Abbotsford, with 14 qualifying for the provincial championships happening in Nanaimo Aug. 19-21.

Standout performances included Christina Diewold, the aggregated winner for division five girls, Sophie Bryant who broke a Mission Marlins club record for division five girls 100 metre

breast stroke with a time of 120.55, and Jennifer Klimmer who also broke a club record for girls division six 50 fly with a time of 31.67.

The Marlins also broke a regional record in the girls division six 200m medley, which included Christina Diewold swimming backstroke, Sophie Bryant, the breaststroke, Jennifer Klimmer, the fly, and Kristiana Kamagianis, freestyle.

Working to perfect the art of barbecue

Slow cooking chicken, ribs, brisket and pork shoulder in a variety of spices, sauce and different types of wood smoke is many North Americans favourite way to pass the time on weekends.

But for guys like Kevin Phenix, it’s a bit more serious.

Competition barbecue has been a mainstay in American culture for decades, and has slowly been making its way north of the border.

Phenix has chosen to take his culinary skills with charcoal and flavour injections to the next level, and has been actively putting his food up for judging.

“Barbecue in Canada is in its incipient stage,” said the longtime resident, who along with his competition partner Garry Mutter and his family, comprise the Sasquatch Barbecue team, registering with the Pacific Northwest Barbecue Association (PNWBA).

It started innocently enough for Phenix.

He was watching a barbecue competition on television and thought that he could do better.

His curiosity spurred him to take a pitmaster course in Munroe, Wash. with the PNWBA, and since then, he’s been studying the intricacies of flavour profile, the complexities of wood choice, and the chemistry of how to take tough cuts of meat, and transform them into tender works of gastronomical art.

And the work has been paying off.

Last weekend, Phenix placed 10th overall and earned first place for his chicken in the Canadian National BBQ Championships. Last year, he finished 33rd overall.

Also, his one-hour chicken marinade earned him third place in the Man Tested Recipe category at a competition in Munroe, plus he’s won a number of ribbons at other contests.

Everything from the choice of meat, to the temperature of the grill, whether your rub is used with granulated or powdered spices, along with whether you’re using apple, pecan, cherry, hickory or mesquite wood for smoke are all factors that influence the final result.

New tactics explored to unclog hospitals Black Press

Fraser Health officials say they’re taking new steps to reduce hospital congestion after the release of findings of a review by an independent expert panel.

One of the new methods includes having home care staff based at emergency departments to intercept incoming elderly patients who can be redirected back home and treated there with sufficient home support, according to Marc Pelletier, Fraser’s vicepresident of clinical operations.

“They can be discharged home with a commitment of home care resources that might be visiting two hours later at that person’s home,” he said.

Pelletier said that’s one of a number of ongoing strategies Fraser is exploring to try to limit the number of people who are admitted to hospital and reduce the average length of time they stay there.

Modest gains in various areas could translate into a huge number of patients across the system, helping cut congestion.

Despite hopes for a silver bullet solution, the Fraser Health Congestion Review Panel said in a report released in June it “couldn’t identify any significant gaps” in the region’s patient access and flow strategies.

It did suggest potential improvements to explore in several areas.

Hospital staff were concerned about the quality of care they could give patients in overflow situations who are routinely treated in hallways, the report said, but many care workers “had a sense of resignation about these conditions as intractable.”

The report was released at the same time Health Minister Mike de

Jong directed Fraser to pursue measurable improvements in five key areas to reduce hospital congestion within 150 days.

One of the numbers de Jong wants to see drop is the roughly 100 patients across Fraser Health who at any given time are being treated in hallways or other areas not designed for clinical care.

The second target area is a drop in C. difficile infections, where alarmingly high rates of the bacteria-spread illness prompted the health region send roving “super clean” teams from hospital to hospital earlier this year.

The enhanced cleaning and hand-washing strategies are paying off, Pelletier said.

“We’re seeing a reduction in C difficile to the lowest rates we’ve seen in a long time.”

That should help on the congestion front because patients with hospital-acquired infections tend to stay in hospital longer.

Other minister-set targets include a cut in the average length of patient stay in hospital, an increase in the percentage of admitted ER patients getting a hospital bed within 10 hours; and a goal of treating 90 per cent of broken hip cases within 48 hours.

Pelletier said he isn’t concerned the new initiatives might push patients out of hospital too soon, adding staff are “very sensitive to discharging people inappropriately.”

The expert panel interviewed more than 500 staff and focused on Surrey Memorial and Royal Columbian hospitals.

Fraser Health last year treated 3.9 per cent more hospital patients and recorded a five per cent increase in inpatient days as well as a 7.3 per cent jump in ER visits.

The 2,200 acute care beds across 12 hospitals are routinely full.

The Downtown Business Association organized volunteers Sunday along First, Second and North Railway Avenues to weed, power wash and pick up garbage.

Construction of the original Stave Falls Dam and Powerhouse began in 1909 and was completed by Jan. 1, 1912. A second component, the Alouette Powerhouse, was added in 1928.

The Stave River generation complex is comprised of three dams and power stations: Stave Falls, Alouette and Ruskin. The three powerhouses have a production capacity of 205 megawatts of electricity.

An additional generator was installed in the Ruskin Powerhouse in 1950 to meet increased electrical demand in the region, while in 1999, a new Stave generating station came into service.

In 2000, after supplying reliable and clean energy for almost 90 years, the power house at Stave Falls was decommissioned, but it was turned into a museum and visitor’s centre opening its doors on Mother’s Day in 2002.

To date, 125,000 visitors have toured the centre, including 100,000 students, and the Stave Falls Dam and Powerhouse is recognized as a Canadian National Heritage site.

‘It’s a culinary sport,’ says Mission competitor alchemy is all based on balance, and awardwinning results are hardfought and time-tested, making the cooks who create them intensely cautious about tipping off the competition.

But Phenix has been getting direction from one of the best in the region, Brian Misko from House of Q, the frequently featured chef on the morning news.

“He’s my Canadian mentor,” said the 20year corrections officer.

While competitors like Misko won’t flat out tell an up-and-comer their secrets, they are glad to point you down the correct path, said Phenix.

His current weapon of choice is a Napoleon kettle grill and another Weber, and he buys his meat from a big box store in Abbotsford, which he maintains has better consistent quality.

At a competition, entrants are required to prepare a chicken, pork rib, pork butt and beef brisket. These are judged on appearance, texture and taste, all scored out of 10. The overall highest score wins.

This means you can place lower in one category and still come out ahead in the end, noted Phenix.

This is his third year competing, and he has his eyes firmly on one goal: the Stanley Cup of barbecue, the Jack Daniel’s World Championship Invitational Barbecue. To qualify you must win a grand championship — which Phenix aims to do within two years — and then your name is entered into a lottery.

Following that path will take money — each competition can cost around $1,000 to enter — more barbecuing, competing and schooling. He’s actively seeking sponsors to help him reach his goal.

And while the competition is a serious endeavour, Phenix’s mindset is simple: This is not a business, this is a competition barbecue team.
