First Avenue speed limit dropping to 40 km/h BY CAROL AUN
SENTENCE METED OUT
Mission Record
The speed limit on First Avenue in downtown Mission is being dropped to 40 km/h. Council wanted the speed to be reduced from the current 50 km/h to 30 km/h and made the request to Abbotsford-Mission MLA Randy Hawes, who referred the matter to the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MOTI) earlier this year. In a letter dated Oct. 5, the MOTI stated the speed limit for all numbered highways is 50 km/h unless there is a school zone present. However, in recognition of Mission’s downtown revitalization project, the ministry granted a reduction. Mission Downtown Business Association’s executive director was disappointed the speed limit wasn’t altered to 30 km/h, but says this is a step in the right direction. Ronda Cushnie expects traffic calming will come as part of the revitalization plan to make First Avenue a pedestrian-friendly area. “Our dream is to have wide sidewalks, outdoor cafes, and green up some space,” said Cushnie. “Ultimately, we would like to see an overpass or bypass.” Council is also not satisfied with the reduction and Coun. Dave Hensman says he will keep fighting for the lower speed. Mayor Ted Adlem suggested Mission should consider, through the revitalization plan, taking over First Avenue from the provincial ministry.

Driver gets $1,500 fine for killing flagger BY VIKKI HOPES Black Press
A flagger who witnessed co-worker Don Cain get hit by a car in Mission in July 2010 and dragged to his death sobbed in court Monday as she told Judge Jill Rounthwaite how the incident had affected her. Ingrid Ayana, in giving her victim impact statement during the sentencing hearing for driver Thor Shay of Mission, said she can’t sleep, has panic attacks, and can’t get images of the crash out of her mind. She said she had switched places with Cain only six minutes before he was struck, and she blames herself for his death. Crying could be hear throughout the packed courtroom during her statement. The judge wiped away her own tears before stepping down from her bench to hug and comfort Ayana. Rounthwaite sentenced Shay, 59, to a $1,500 fine and a one-year driving ban for a charge of driving without due care and attention. Shay was scheduled to begin trial on Monday in Abbotsford provincial court, but entered a surprise guilty plea. The judge acknowledged to family members in attendance that the sentence was “laughable in comparison to the death of your son and brother. “There is nothing that the court can do that can possibly make it better or can in any way compensate, or be sufficient for, the death of a loved one,” Rounthwaite said. According to the provincial Crown counsel spokesperson, the maximum amount applicable under the law for that offence is $2,000. Cain, a 49-year-old Aldergrove resident, was working as a flagger on Lougheed Highway just west of Oliver Street on July 15, 2010 when he was struck by Shay. It was a clear day and roads were dry at the time. Crown and defence lawyers said dur-

ing their agreed statements of facts that Shay had been temporarily blinded by the sun and did not see Cain before he hit him. He was not speeding at the time, they said. But Cain’s sister, Sherry Isenor, read from a WorkSafeBC report during her victim impact statement, indicating that an investigator from the agency had travelled the same route, at the same time of day in similar weather conditions within a week of the crash, and reported the sun was not an issue, Isenor said. She also read a portion of the report that stated Shay’s windshield had been cracked and dirty at the time of the incident.
Isenor was joined in the courtroom by sister Debbie Cain, herself a flagger; mom Irene Cain; and several members of the B.C. Flagging Association. Cain’s two sons, ages 19 and 20, were too traumatized to be there, Isenor said. Association co-founder Tammy Sampson stood up in court to suggest the laws need to be changed for drivers who kill or injure flaggers. “I think a $1,500 fine is too minimal. It sets a poor example for B.C. drivers who drive through our construction zones on a daily basis,” she told the judge. Outside of court, the family said the laws need to be stronger.
Developer alters proposal down to 32 lots BY CAROL AUN Mission Record
A Steelhead resident who wants to rezone 80 acres of his property for development is amending his proposal from 65 lots to 32. Dean Hodgson says he is making the change after listening to neighbours’ concerns. The proposed lots would be larger than two acres, and he would bring in water lines and work with Telus to provide high-speed Internet for the area. The two parcel, 80-acre properties are currently zoned for rural devel-
opment (four-acre lot minimum), and the new proposal for rural residential would require an amendment to the Official Community Plan, but is keeping with the rural density numbers. The properties can be accessed from Thomas Avenue, just off of Cardinal Street, along with adjacent lots also zoned rural residential. The change alleviates many district staff concerns, said OTG Development Concepts’ Ryan Anderson, who is working with Hodgson on the project. He hopes it’s something the community can support too. By constructing water lines and con-
necting to the district’s resources, the new homes would not tap into the aquifer and would allow homeowners along the line to tap in as well, Anderson added. Hodgson will also leave a tree buffer so his current neighbours will have privacy. Christina Hart is one of Hodgson’s neighbours who told council Monday night that she would like to see the proposed development “respect and preserve the character of Mission’s mountain gem” and “keep within the guidelines of the OCP.” She also handed council a petition with more than 150 signatures opposing the original development proposal.
The other concerns she expressed included an increase traffic, noise, risk of forest fires and endangering wildlife and environmentally sensitive areas. Hodgson says he would like to speak with Hart about her concerns. Hodgson lived in Silverdale for 10 years before moving to Steelhead a few years ago, and he has plans to stay in Steelhead after his properties are subdivided. Mission’s deputy director of development services, Barclay Pitkethly, confirmed the application is being amended and will be presented to council when the new plan is submitted.
DT plan creators chosen by the district The municipality has chosen a company to develop a downtown revitalization plan. HB Lanarc Consultants will build the document, in conjunction with a number of other design and engineering firms. Team members have worked on projects such as Langley City and Medicine Hat downtowns, UFV’s campus plan, and the Coquitlam Town Centre concept. According to Mission Mayor Ted Adlem, “This is an exciting time for Mission, and council is looking forward to the active involvement of our downtown merchants and owners as well as the rest of the community in shaping our downtown. “This is our chance to implement an action plan for downtown – one that will result in real change.” A concept is slated for release by early 2013, while a final economic viability and implementation plan will be completed by March 31.

This year’s guest speaker is Casey Bjorndal, Gideons Regional Facilitator – British Columbia. In the spring of 2000, through a powerful encounter with the Holy Spirit, Casey and Christa, his wife, became radically saved out of a life of partying, drugs and alcohol. God placed within Casey a desire to preach the Gospel to a lost world and to stir up other brothers and sisters in Christ to live fully for Him. Casey and Christa now live in Langley with their 18-month-old, beautiful, miracle daughter named Christianna. In March of 2011, after 12 successful years in the auto business, Casey felt God calling him into full time ministry. He stepped out in faith and launched an evangelistic ministry called Soul Search International (www.soulsearch.ca). A dynamic preacher, Casey has a passion for God and souls that is contagious. Enduring Suffering One can endure almost anything, so long as it isn’t meaningless. By the very nature of our finite existence, we are going to suffer. All God’s creatures will suffer sickness or injury, and ultimately death, but that does not make life meaningless. Suffering can be made sacred by identifying our suffering with the suffering and death of Christ, which gives our suffering cosmic significance. Another way in which one can make one’s suffering meaningful is by envisioning it as a trial. It may be a cliché to say that suffering produces character, but that doesn’t make it less true. We all must find our own way to make our suffering meaningful. Sometimes the suffering is just the tedium of our jobs, and even mindnumbing boredom can be an opportunity to find meaning via mindfulness. Other times the suffering is physical pain or discomfort, and the challenge is to figure out how to view our pain or discomfort in such a way that it can be handled with equanimity. Perhaps the hardest suffering to endure is mental or emotional suffering. Anxiety and depression can literally be too much for many people to endure, and so it is vital to ask for help, and sometimes that is the meaning in suffering: that we are finite, limited creatures who are quite often helpless in the face of horrible pain and that we must be ready and willing to reach out for help.

Trad school forum Nov. 13 BY JASON ROESSLE Mission Record
Mission school trustees have set a tentative date of Nov. 13 for its public forum on traditional schools. At last month’s board of trustees meeting, a motion was put forward to organize an evening where politicians and school district staff could hear from parents about what is lacking in local schools that has driven increasing numbers of students to traditional educational facilities. Board vice-chair Jim Taylor said three main questions will be asked. 1. What characteristic defines traditional schools? 2. Do you believe Mission needs a traditional elementary school? 3. Do you have schoolaged children that you would move and what school are they currently attending? Taylor said in a previous article in The Record that the aim is to hear from parents. “The forum would be short on information to the public, but lots of ideas from the public,” he said. The issue came to a head after enrolment numbers were examined last month. Co-acting superintendent Randy Huth noted 172 students (including Summit Learning Centre) have withdrawn from the local school district. The majority, 105, moved out of province, but 42 migrated to an independent school. A lower number was seen at the secondary level, with 141 total withdrawals, and 86 moving to another province, with eight now attending an independent school. Taylor said it would be helpful to the board if Mission parents who don’t have children in the local system offered their opinions on what’s missing locally. The meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Nov. 13 at Fraserview Elementary School on Seventh Avenue.

MCSS celebrates 40 years of helping the community STORIES
BY
CAROL AUN
Mission Record
Mission Community Services Society is celebrating its 40th birthday with a barbecue Friday. The non-profit organization supports seniors, families, children and those in need. MCSS was incorporated Feb. 11, 1972, and like many organizations, the idea grew from a kitchen table conversation about how to address the needs of Mission residents, said executive director Tony Lapointe. Glen Barkman was the first director and Barbara Wightman was the assistant director/secretary. The first services included emergency transportation and Meals on Wheels. The food centre and Christmas Bureau were added later that year, said Lapointe. Today, the organization runs
more than 20 programs. The original MCSS home was on the second floor of the Recreation Centre. The group moved into the old hospital in 1965 before finally settling in at its current location on Second Avenue in 1999. MCSS expanded over the years, but still maintains its focus to help its neighbours. MCSS is now a $4-million organization, and although 75 to 80 per cent of the business is contract work, the rest of the funds need to be fundraised. Contributions to the Christmas Bureau have decreased over the last few years, said Lapointe, adding the annual centre will open next month. Lapointe says the target is to raise $400,000 this year to run the Christmas Bureau, seniors and children programs. In addition to applying for
grants, MCSS is also hosting a James Bond-themed casino night fundraiser on Nov. 2. Tickets to the event are $75 or $100 each, depending on how much “funny money” you want to play with. The event runs from 7 to 11 p.m. and will feature professional dealers, comedians from Stand Up For Mental Health, a buffet dinner and many prizes. Tickets are available at MCSS or by calling 604-8263634. The celebration barbecue on Oct.19 runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Canadian Tire parking lot at the Junction. Enjoy a Mr Mike’s burger with a minimum $5 donation to the Food Centre. Other activities on site include a Kids Zone, the Tim Hortons Community Cruiser, displays from funding agencies, such as United Way, and information about MCSS programs.
Mission seeks boundary expansion The District of Mission wants to expand its boundaries to include 60 acres on the south shore of Alouette Lake to accommodate a proposed Tim Hortons Children’s Foundation camp. The land is currently split between Mission and the Fraser Valley Regional District (FVRD). The access roads to the camp are within Mission, and working with one jurisdiction would make it easier for the foundation to apply for building permits, rezoning and other service requirements, such as emergency services.
The change is supported by FVRD but has to be provincially approved. The land is Crown owned, and was referred to as Boulder Bay and used as a youth correctional facility until 2002. Since then, Mission has been looking at subleasing opportunities. Tim Hortons began inquiries in 2009. In a presentation to Mission council Monday night, Tim Hortons Children’s Foundation’s special projects manager, Bill Brooks, explained the foundation was founded in 1974 and is a reg-
istered charity in Canada and the US. There are six camps, five in Canada, one in the US, and none in B.C. The proposed camp near Pine Lake would serve more B.C. children. The site is about 150 acres. Brooks says the vision is to build a facility that would involve First Nations, highlight the natural environment and use green technologies. He also noted it would employ five full-time staff members, 50 seasonal ones, and there would be other economic spinoffs for the construction industry.

Who knew what?
Like a nasty computer virus, the XL Foods meat recall is casting a wider net and creating more problems as each day dawns. From the initial recall of beef processed by the Alberta plant between Aug. 24 and Sept. 5, the beef recall has now extended to thousands of stores. Hundreds of products from ground beef to prepared kebabs are on the do-not-eat (or cook-’til-charred) list, even though more than a month has passed since problems were first detected. As many as 10 E. coli cases in Alberta, Quebec and Newfoundland were linked to beef products from the XL Foods plant, where E. coli was initially detected on Sept. 4, and now some B.C. victims have been identified as recovering from the illness caused by eating beef processed at XL Foods. This makes the XL Foods beef recall a national issue requiring a thorough investigation if confidence in the Canadian food system is to be restored. Many questions remain about who knew what and when — and what was done about it. The laxity of procedures at the plant and the length of time it took to identify the meat products affected could have put people’s lives in jeopardy. Initial stock-taking suggests some rigorous analysis of checks and re-checks of food processing systems at XL Foods is required. Other meat processing plants should be subject to review as well. This isn’t unnecessary red-tape and regulation; rather, it’s important for the industry to be able to guarantee that beef processed at plants is safe to eat. But questions also remain about the three-day lag between the time that Canadian Food Inspection Agency knew of problems of meat imported to the U.S. and when it began alerting the Canadian public. Could more have been done sooner? Let’s hope we find out. - Tri-City News

Fantasis won’t keep ferries afloat I t was a sunny Thanksgiving weekend when I took my first all-transit trip from Victoria to Vancouver for a B.C. Lions football game. Despite all the doomsaying about people shunning ferries because of some mediadetermined “tipping point” in fares, you wouldn’t have guessed it that weekend. Articulated buses were jammed coming and going from the Tsawwassen terminal to the Canada Line. Returning to Vancouver Island on Sunday, I was struck by the crowds, and the low cost: SkyTrain, express bus, walk-on passenger fare and express bus to Victoria totalled about $20. This explains the surge in walk-on traffic. BC Ferries issued bulletins advising first that Tsawwassen’s parking lot and then Swartz Bay’s were full. The Tsawwassen First Nation’s shuttle parking next door was overflowing, with cars tucked into every level space. And even with hourly sailings, the major route had plenty of vehicle traffic, with all available vessels running. Now the long, late summer
Q
is gone, and the political theatre resumes. Transportation Minister Mary Polak picked up where the retiring Blair Lekstrom left off, reminding people that BC Ferries is going to deal with rising costs primarily by ceasing the practice of running vessels a third full or less. This comes as “consultation” begins with smaller ferry communities on where and when these sailings will be cut. And it follows the first major price-cap decision by the newly empowered B.C. Ferry Commissioner, Gord Macatee. He now To can determine service levels as well as fares, which are permitted to rise about four per cent in each of the next three years. The NDP’s ferry critic, North Coast MLA Garry Coons, has also decided to transition to his government pensions next year. But before he sails away, he has doubled his repertoire of outraged sound bites to two. Along with every coffee-
shop know-it-all on the coast, Coons perpetually reminds us that ferries are “part of our highway system.” He remains convinced that this financially illiterate cliché somehow deals with the fact that even a subsidy approaching $200 million this year can’t keep all those boats afloat forever. A family of four on a long driving trip faces similar price increases, when you factor in tolls, insurance, food and other costs beyond the fuel tank. But for some reason the “government” is supposed to provide special m relief to those who choose the most inaccessible places to live. Coons’ latest tack is that BC Ferries has lost its way, trying to be a fancy cruise ship service instead of giving people basic transportation at an affordable price. That would be terrible if it were true. But those amenities on newer vessels are there because they make money, utilizing staff who

have to be on board anyway. As everyone but the NDP seems to grasp, the big costs are fuel, maintenance, and minimum crew levels to meet federal regulations, regardless of passenger revenue. I was reminded on the last busy weekend of the year that the new Coastal-class ferries kept vehicle capacity the same while increasing passenger space. This choice anticipated today’s travel reality nearly a decade ago. Good thing somebody was able to understand ferries as a business, as opposed to a welfare program for the reclusive and the rich. BC Ferries has already cut sailings on the TsawwassenDuke point route. As described in an earlier column, this needlessly long run is the biggest boondoggle in BC Ferries history, a Dave Barrett-era payoff to the union that continues today. Changes will now come to other routes that minimize shifts and overtime, rather than inflating them. YOUR VIEWS MASH thankful for the support Editor, The Record: As many people in Mission know, the Mission Association for Seniors Housing (MASH) is building a new housing project for independent seniors on Janzen Avenue called Cedar Valley Manor. Recently, we approached Save On Foods to ask if we could put a tent up outside the store to let shoppers know about CVM. The store staff and manager, Dean Pearson, could not have been more helpful. Not only did they let us use a prime spot, they provided us with a table and chairs and even a tablecloth. We are very grateful and wanted to commend Save On for its support. Rules should be applied to all residents equally Editor, The Record: Re: Council supporting ALR subdivision, Oct. 4 edition. Quite clearly council does not value agricultural land usage as it supports Agricultural Land Reserve subdivision, even though it is in contravention of the Official Community Plan (OCP). It is indeed naive to believe that endorsing such a course of action will not have far-reaching implications and set a precedent, for as surely as night follows day, the
floodgates will open for applicants whose eyes are solely on their bank accounts, and the “gold” accumulating therein. About $200,000 was budgeted to establish the OCP, which was a pointless financial exercise, as it appears councils change it at whim. So why not abolish the OCP thereby saving taxpayer dollars. The OCP was a long process with public input and is due to be revisited in 2013, which will certainly cost another large amount. Mayor Ted Adlem im-
plies that because the applicants are long-time residents, and descendants of “pioneers,” that they should receive special privilege and entitlement because of their lineage, which is irrelevant as this is a land use issue. To whom one is related should not be of any importance. Are not all laws, rules and regulations supposed to apply to everyone equally, be they recent immigrants or of historic descent? NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING DISTRICT OF MISSION NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING
Pursuant to the provisions of Sections 890 and 892 of the Local Government Act, a Public Hearing will take place in the Council Chambers of the Municipal Hall, 8645 Stave Lake Street, Mission, BC at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, October 22, 2012 to consider the following proposed bylaws:
1. DISTRICT OF MISSION OFFICIAL COMMUNITY PLAN AMENDING BYLAW 5313-2012-4052(26) (R12-018 Moody)
This bylaw proposes to amend District of Mission Official Community Plan 4052-2008 for a portion of the following legally described properties: Parcel Identifier: 000-606-430 Lot 19 Section 5 Township 18 New Westminster District Plan 52538 Parcel Identifier: 005-036-119 Lot 18 Section 5 Township 18 New Westminster District Plan 52538 from Rural Residential to Suburban. The location of the subject properties is 9716 and 9732 Dewdney Trunk Road and is shown on the following maps:
The purpose of the proposed Official Community Plan (OCP) amendment is to redesignate the western portion of two (2) properties from Rural Residential to Suburban. The OCP amendment would enable future rezoning of the site to create two (2) lots with a minimum lot area of 0.36 hectares (.88 acres) and one (1) remainder lot of approximately 3.0 ha (7.5 ac.). Copies of the proposed bylaw and reports relevant to the bylaw may be inspected at the Municipal Hall, 8645 Stave Lake Street, Mission, BC, Monday to Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., until October 22, 2012. The information is also available on our website at www.mission.ca by searching “upcoming public hearing”. For further information regarding any of this bylaw, please contact the Planning Department at (604) 820-3748. At the Public Hearing, persons who believe that their interest in property is affected by these proposed bylaws will have the opportunity to be heard. If you are unable to attend, you may send a written submission, including your name and address, to the attention of Paul Gipps, Deputy Chief Administrative Officer or email info@mission.ca by 4:00 p.m. on the date of the Public Hearing. All submissions will form part of the record of the Hearing. Please note that no further information or submissions can be considered by Council after the conclusion of the Public Hearing. Immediately following the Public Hearing portion of the meeting, Council may consider moving bylaws forward for additional readings. people are once again installing wood burning heaters and stoves. Wood burning can lead to a buildup of creosote on the chimney lining, and increase the threat of a chimney fire. The chimney should be cleaned at least annually by a qualified contractor, and may require more frequent cleaning based on your level of use. Carbon monoxide
poisoning is a particular threat in energy efficient homes, because they are constructed to be airtight. Carbon monoxide detectors are a good idea, but it is also advisable to ensure that your bedroom windows are left slightly open for improved ventilation. Gas fireplaces, and gas or oil furnaces, should also be serviced and cleaned annually.
Learn to keep bears away
For the last two years, Mission has seen an increased occurrence of bears looking for food in residential areas because they often find it in people’s garbage or compost. Once they find a meal, they will be back for seconds, and they will teach their cubs what they know. Bears are only doing what comes naturally to them. It is up to us to keep them in the wild and not lure them into our backyard. It’s the bears that ultimately pay the price. Last year, seven bears were shot by provincial conservation officers because they were perceived as a threat – almost all of them in our more highly populated areas. Bears are attracted by smells. If it smells like food to them, they will investigate. Bears are most attracted by garbage, compost, bird
seed, pet food and ripening fruit. Even pop bottles that haven’t been rinsed or empty pizza boxes can attract a hungry bear. We can help by storing all garbage, compost and recyclables inside, removing bird feeders from April to November, feeding pets inside and promptly picking ripe fruit out of our gardens. Please also remember that garbage, recyclables and compost should never be placed at the curb the night before collection, but must be out on the morning of collection day by 8 a.m. For more information, visit www.bearaware. bc.ca or call the district’s Engineering Department at 604820-3736. To report an aggressive bear, please call the Conservation Officer Service at 1-877-952-7277.

How to help your dog cope with fireworks Even though Fireworks are banned within the municipality, people continue to purchase them elsewhere and set them off. Not only is the use of fireworks a safety risk to people, it also creates a problem for many dog owners whose dogs are afraid of loud noises like thunder storms or fireworks. It is often possible to help your dogs deal with their fears, however your degree of success will depend on the dog’s character and experience, and the reasons for the fear. The following suggestions may not be the definitive answer to your dog’s worries, but they are designed to give you somewhere to start. Try getting your dog used to firework/storm noises using recordings and so on. You can get tapes of sound effects which include thunder and fireworks from: http://members. farmline.com/stress/ sounds.htm; http://
Many dogs are fearful of fireworks, making Halloween an especially terrifying time for man’s best friend. JASON ROESSLE PHOTO
www.fearoffireworks. com; or http://www. soundsscary.com Start off by playing the noises very quietly while your dog is doing something enjoyable such as eating his dinner, or playing with
you. Gradually, over several weeks, turn up the volume. This helps him get used to the noise, and makes him associate it with a pleasant experience, so that the real noises, when they come, don’t
worry him so much. Tapes can’t copy the smells, air pressure changes and light flashes which come with the real thing, but they do help some dogs. Do not comfort your dog if he is fearful, as this will only reward the behaviour. Do not punish your dog either, as that will heighten his anxiety. Do not react to the noises yourself. Try to use distraction i.e. loud familiar noises such as television or music, curtains drawn and a darkened room. Provide your dog with a den-like area in which he can hide. This should ideally be in the same room in which you will be sitting in for the evening. It is best not to leave your dog alone on the nights when there are loud, firework displays. The dog may panic, and then be reluctant to be left on his own in the future. You may wish to consult your local veterinarian for other remedies.

Bobby O’Neal and his wife Nanci show off a copy of their board game, Syncrohearts. JASON ROESSLE PHOTO
Dr. Love on stage at Tradex Mission’s own Dr. Love will be gracing the Tradex stage in Abbotsford this weekend at the West Coast Women’s Show. Bobby O’Neal has been tirelessly promoting his Syncrohearts relationship and love game for a number of years, including two stints on Dragons’ Den, and recently, orders have started to pick up. This longtime Mission resident developed his
product as a way to bring communication and quality time back into his own marriage (now 24years strong) in a fun and loving way. Synchrohearts was recognized by the renowned Mom’s Choice Awards (US) this year in the Adult category of Games, and the new Synchrohearts smartphone app was recognized in the apps and software category. It also just won the Family Review Cen-
tre’s Gold Award. Since the game was designed by a man, Dr. Love says it is approachable, simple and fun for all – what sets it apart from other games is that it doesn’t fall in the XXX category. Originally developed six years ago, the game has built a rapid following, thanks in part to his TV appearances and his new book, Dr. Love’s prescription for a Romantic Loving Man.
Recently, the O’Neals have seen a huge spike in international orders – interestingly, in places like Moscow and Iran. Dr. Love will have a booth at the Women’s Show all weekend and will be speaking on Sunday at 2:15 p.m. on the Health and Wellness stage. The Women’s Show runs Oct. 19-21 at Tradex in Abbotsford. The District of Mission received five blooms in this year’s Communities in Bloom competition and is the winner of the Butcharts Gardens Land Reclamation Award. Mission is also a finalist in the 20,001 to 50,000 population category of the 2012 national edition of Communities in Bloom, and received a special mention for Gorilla Gardeners at the ceremony in Edmonton, Oct. 12-13. Following their evaluation of the community, volunteer judges Evelyn Alemanni and Jim Baird wrote: “The Gorilla Gardeners are a group of 22 individuals who have played a major role in the landscape of Mission. When they see an area, they do not complain to the town, they roll up their sleeves and develop an improvement plan. They now have 11 sites to their credit. “At the museum, the very tight side yards were rough and neglected. The Gorillas contacted a local landscape architect who donated her time to create an attractive, low-maintenance design. The project was undertaken with cooperation from the town. The result is an Edwardian Garden to complement the Edwardian style of the museum building. It is a thoroughly professional project and a lovely addition to the community.” Communities in Bloom is a national organization dedicated to the promotion of green spaces in community settings.

Star Party at FRHP Saturday Teresa Yu (left) and Marilyn MacDonald were honoured at the Myrtle Evertt Awards.
TANEANE TWELE PHOTOS
Yu, MacDonald named as Women of the Year Two Mission residents earned the Business and Professional Women Club’s Myrtle Evertt Woman of the Year award, handed out Oct. 10 at Cedarbrooke Chateau. Teresa Yu and Marilyn MacDonald each won the honour, which recognizes individuals who are high achievers in business or a profession. Yu is a registered nurse and certified acupressure therapist with more than 20 years experience in wellness and mental health practice. Her clients speak of how she “empowers” them by focusing on assuming responsibil-
ity for their own care and by individualizing treatment for all ages. MacDonald’s career has included work as a journalist, adult educator and a wide variety of community volunteering. In her nomination, her colleagues and friends identified her dedication to empowering others, especially her students, to overcome their emotional, physical or social barriers. The Myrtle Evertts will now happen every second year, and in 2014, candidates will be nominated from the non-profit community service and sport athletic sectors.

Family stargazing returns to Mission Oct. 20, as Fraser River Heritage Park and Fraser Valley Astronomers Society launch the second annual Star Party. Last year’s event saw more than 100 people gazing at the heavens through a wide variety of telescopes, spotting night sights
like Jupiter, the moon, the Pleiades star cluster, Andromeda galaxy and more. This year’s event will bring more objects “up close and personal” for participants. The evening’s activities are free and start at 7:30 p.m. near the south edge of the park, where the
scopes are lined up with a clear view of the southern night sky. A slideshow depicting Hubble and other high-powered telescope views of deep space objects will be running under the picnic shelter at the park, whether skies are clear or cloudy. Last year’s program
Jupiter, a first-quarter moon, and the Pleiades will be among the objects visible in the sky this Saturday. SUBMITTED PHOTOS

Do You Want What I’ve Got? A Craigslist Cantata will be in Mission for a one night performance on Oct. 30. This 90-minute romp of quick-witted and heartfelt-spoken text and song, Craigslist is the brainchild of two of Vancouver’s most beloved cultural icons, composer Veda Hille and the CBC’s Bill Richardson. The pair explore what humanity has to offer and turns it into a sidesplitting musical fare. Craigslist has more than 700 local sites in 70 countries and 20 billion page-views and 50 million new ads posted monthly. It has become a treasured online locus where we are sanctioned to share our needs, wants and offerings. Hille describes it as “the mass of humanity pressed against the glass” offering a forum that is simultaneously anonymous and incredibly public. An award-winning writer and broadcaster, Richardson has contributed to CBC Radio since 1984. Composer Hille is one of Canada’s foremost indie singer-songwriters and has been described as “visceral, luminescent, fierce, haunting and with talent to burn.” This production was a hit when it played in Vancouver last spring, and the current Arts Club Tour is wowing audiences and selling out throughout the Lower Mainland. The Oct. 30 show will be at the Clarke Theatre. Tickets are now on sale by calling 1-877-2991644. The show begins at 8 p.m.

It’s seven years later, and Charles has re-married. With his more cerebral second wife, Ruth, and their friends, the Bradmans, Charles hosts a dinner party with the local loopy medium as guest of honour. Charles is hoping for some good material for his next book. Instead, he gets his first wife back. When Charles’s first wife is unwittingly summoned from beyond the grave, and she is not at all pleased to find her place has been taken by another woman. Elvira is determined to get her husband back, and she doesn’t care who she drives crazy as she does it. This improbable farce stars

Opening Nite Theatre Society is opening its sixth season this week with Blithe Spirit, one Noel Coward’s best-known works. This ghost story comedy can be described as a metaphysical malarkey peppered with razorsharp wit and humour. This season opener is a refreshingly hilarious take on life, love, and the problems of coming back from the afterlife. Writer Charles Candomine is a suave and urbane man with good looks and a quick mind. His wife, the beautiful but flighty Elvira, dies laughing at a young age. Grief stricken but never one to be defeated by circumstance, Charles moves on.

an blend of old country, western swings, blues and vintage jazz. Terry Young and Sandra Swannell formed the band when Tanglefoot, another group they were both a part of, disbanded in 2009. Swannell began playing the violin even before she started school. She is classically trained, but has a diverse musical background. Young loved to sing when he was a child and is a classically trained tenor. He picked up a guitar in high school and now has the reputation as a talented multi-instrumentalist, also playing the mandolin and banjo. Earlier this year, percussionist-trumpet player Bradford Nowak joined the duo to complete the band. Tickets to the Oct. 23 show are $20 and available by calling 604-8260029. The show starts at 7 p.m. and there will be limited seating. The concert is being hosted by Mission Arts Council president Ania Kyte. For more information visit homeroutes.ca.
